I am delighted there has been such strong interest from both students and parents in our school; we have been oversubscribed with student applications from across and outside the borough in our first year.

The calibre, motivation and commitment of our students (and their parental support) tells me we are building something special.

Fuse together project based learning, with an industrial twist, combined with cutting edge facilities; you have the typical Future Tech learning lab. Students will also be reinforcing their knowledge gained in the classroom with work experience at a number of sought after employers.

Here at Future Tech, we aim to foster the principles of the Studio School model through the use of futuristic technology, to create an innovative and engaging curriculum which students can thrive on in the classroom and the workplace. Specifically, we aim to:

What is a Studio School?Studio Schools are a new type of state school for 14 – 19 year olds which are designed to better prepare young people for the working world.

Studio Schools pioneer a bold new approach to learning with a focus on teaching through enterprise projects, personalisation and real work. This approach ensures students’ learning is rooted in

the real world and helps them to develop the skills and experience they need to flourish in life.

Studio Schools are small schools for 300 students and, with year-round opening and a 9am-5pm working day, they feel more like a workplace than a school. Working closely with local employers, Studio Schools will offer a range of academic and vocational qualifications at Levels 2 and 3, including GCSEs in English, Maths and Science, as well as work placements linked directly to employment opportunities in the local area. Students will gain a broad range of employability and life skills through the CREATE skills framework (Communication, Relating to Others, Enterprise, Applied, Thinking, Emotional Intelligence), and will have the opportunity to progress on to university, further training, and into employment after completing their studies at the Future Tech Studio.

A personalised curriculum will be offered at the Future Tech Studio, linked to work placements and projects supported by strong employer partnerships. We will be offering a personalised approach to learning and skills development that will include the following:

A mix of academic and specialist vocational choices focused on 3 sector pathways: IT AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS, BUSINESS AND FINANCE, ENGINEERING

Work experience and paid work placements with major local employers as part of the curriculum, with an increased emphasis on this from Year 12 Lessons based around real employer-led project briefs to stimulate new ways of learning

A focus on Maths, English, Science and Computer Science in all areas of the Curriculum

Applied learning using the latest technologies in a flexible working environment

Rigorous tracking and regular review of student progress working in close partnership with parents and carers

A personalised curriculum which recognises the full range of student abilities

Students at Future Tech Studio will have the opportunity to study for GCSEs and A Level qualifications alongside vocational & professional qualifications whilst gaining valuable work experience.

At Future Tech Studio we pride ourselves not only in helping our students achieve the best possible academic grades but also in developing the skills and attributes needed in the workplace today.

The CREATE framework has been designed in order to equip young people with the key employability skills that they need to flourish in life.

The unique CREATE skills framework has been designed specifically for Studio Schools and is comprised of a wide range of employability and life skills. CREATE stands for Communication, Relating to others, Enterprise, Applied skills, Thinking skills and Emotional intelligence. The CREATE skills framework underpins all activities in the Future Tech Studio and will be used by personal coaches to encourage and track students’ development.

Would you like to learn about the world of business and finance?Would you like to study a wide range of subjects from Business Communications to Enterprise?As a student focusing on the Business & Finance sector you will be introduced to the exciting world of business through real life projects and assignments, allowing the development of specialist skills and knowledge.

Do you like creating and fixing things?Are you a practical person who enjoys trying to find out how things actually work?As a student focusing on the Engineering sector you will have the opportunity to work with some of the largest engineering companies in Warrington and surrounding areas, working on real life work based projects gaining skills and experience that you can take back with you into the classroom and beyond.

CURRICULUMKey Stage 5 / Post 16 Students who join the Future Tech Studio in Year 12 have the option to study for a technical baccalaureate which will include an OCR Technical Cambridge in their pathway of choice accompanied by further maths and an extended project; or chose from a selection of A Levels that best meet their pathway of choice.

As part of the key stage 5 curriculum students will spend 2 days a week on work placement with a local employer in a role which directly relates to their pathway.

During the 2014/15 academic year, Year 12 students are working with Barclays Global Technology Centre, Certas Energy, O2, Warrington Borough Council, United Utilities, Live Wire and Rock Oil to name just a few.

Key Stage 4 Students who join the Future Tech Studio in Year 10 will study for 7* core GCSEs accompanied by one further GCSE and a vocational qualification which relate to their pathway of choice.

In addition to studying for GCSEs students will have the opportunity to spend the equivalent to one day a week on work placement with a local employer that relates to their chosen pathway.

Students will gain a vast array of real work experience as students at Future Tech Studio which help prepare them for their next steps beyond their GCSE studies.

In the 2014/15 academic year, Year 10 students are working with a wide range of companies including: Sellafield, European Metal Recycling, Brookson Contract Accountants, the Environment Agency and Golden Gates Housing Trust.

Employer Engagement is at the heart of Future Tech Studio and the success of all work placements is as a result of quality employer partners.

The Employer Engagement Manager is responsible for developing links with key businesses and industry leaders within IT & Telecommunications, Business & Finance and Engineering.

These links will influence curriculum and course content to ensure all students are receiving training to suit the working environment. Built into the curriculum work placements, project based learning and employability skills development will enable students to gain confidence about the working world.

In addition the Employer Engagement Manager will work with students to develop CV writing, applications, job searching skills and vital communication skills for the work place to make them more active in industry. Here at Future Tech Studio we understand that students will learn in different ways. One way we will ensure all academic learning has meaning is by allowing students to apply it within Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which different students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Project Based Learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which it allows students to explore real-world problems and challenges.

The aim of this type of learning is to enable students to be active and engaged in their own learning. Students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Through Project Based Learning students build competencies valuable for today’s world, such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity/

innovation, which are explicitly taught and assessed. Through Project Based Learning, students are allowed to make informed choices about the products to be created, how they work, and how they use their time and are only guided by the teacher.

Students will be assessed in their work, through delivering presentations and exhibitions to parents and employers.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Personal coaches are crucial to the successful delivery of the Future Tech Studio curriculum model. They act as a key link point between all aspects of the curriculum, working with students and teachers to ensure that the curriculum is holistic, personalised and fully compliant will all relevant National Curriculum requirements. Personal coaches will have the following key responsibilities:

• Negotiating core project delivery by working with students at the beginning of projects to tailor them to meet their goals and training requirements

• Planning and coordinating the personalised learning plans and routes for each of their students

• Supporting students to reflect on and evaluate their progress, setting personalised targets

• Liaising with staff within the Studio School and local businesses to monitor and observe students’ progress

• Working with teachers to provide support for core projects and single lesson sessions, helping to ensure that all National Curriculum requirements are delivered

• Making students aware of the progression routes available to them and how their learning relates to them

• Acting as the primary link with parents; building relationships with parents to ensure that they are aware of the progress that their children are making

Work placements are a key element of the Future Tech Studio experience and helps set our students apart from those who follow the traditional education route. Students have the opportunity to combine academic and vocational qualifications with real life work experiences. A work placement offers students the chance to gain valuable experience spending time working for an employer and carrying out duties or tasks as any other employee of the company would.

Year 10 students will complete the equivalent of one day a week on work placement during the academic year with an employer relevant to their learning pathway.

Year 12 students will complete two days per week on work placement. Some employers will offer paid work placements to Year 12 students. Payments will be made to the school and the students who work on these placements will be paid in the form of a bursary.

Students will have the opportunity to work with major local employers including Barclays Global Technology Centre, Brookson Contractor Accountants, The Environment Agency, European Metal Recycling, Golden Gates Housing, Live Wire, National Nuclear Laboratories, United Utilities and Warrington Borough Council.

Students will have to apply for their work placements. Then as in real life, they will have to go through a selection process/interview with the employer.

All of our students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide programme of sport and leisure enrichment activities. Time is allocated during each working day to enrichment in years 10 and 11 and during the days that students spend at the studio in years 12 and 13.

The studio benefits from a skilled set of staff, who are each able to bring their own interests and expertise together, to offer a unique selection of enrichment activities and clubs to our students.

Current activities include: Duke of Edinburgh Award, Performing Arts Club, Entrepreneurs Club, STEM Club, International Club, Sailing Club and a wide range of participation and coaching sports clubs.

Students will be housed in this custom built, high-spec and tech-enabled building from January 2015.

The building, located on the Winwick Road Learning Campus has been carefully designed to accommodate up to 300 students over 3 floors.

The studio has been designed to closely reflect a modern business environment, in building design, furniture and technology selection.

Students have access to an onsite café and break out area. The break out area will host students as they work on their projects and assignments.

In addition many of the fortnightly personal coaching sessions will take place in this relaxed area.

The ground floor houses 2 engineering labs which boast a vast selection of equipment including 3D printers, CAD design suites and laser cutters.

The state of the art science labs on the first floor have been equipped with an extensive range of equipment, allowing students to truly get to grips with the Biology, Chemistry and Physics curriculums.

TechnologyAt Future Tech Studio we understand the importance of creating the perfect learning environment to enable our students to excel. That is why when our students enrol at Future Tech they are given an iPad to assist them in their learning within the classroom. Each classroom has the highest specification of Technology and will have cTouch screens that allow interactive learning.

At Future Tech Studio we are committed to working closely with our employers, and

therefore replicate the latest technology in industry within the school. Future Tech Studio have a designated Barclays Learning Lab that has the highest quality of iMacs. We believe innovation and technology is key in allowing our students to succeed in today’s competitive market.

Job Title: Computer Games Developer

Job Profile: If you love computer games and enjoy using your imagination, this could be ideal for you. Computer games developers produce games for PCs and games consoles. They also produce games for the internet and mobile phones. The work could involve making new games or updating existing titles.

Most computer games developers have a qualification. However employers may be more interested in your software skills and experience.

To become a computer games developer, you will need to have creativity and imagination. You’ll also need to be able to work under pressure and to deadlines.

Salary: Starting salaries for artists and programmers are usually around £25,000 a year. Experienced and skilled designers, head programmers and producers can earn between £30,000 and £50,000.

Many companies also offer bonuses and share schemes for successfully completing projects.

Job Title: IT Project Manager

Job Profile: IT project managers oversee the planning, development and installation of computer systems to meet their clients’ business needs. They work for all types of organisations from the NHS to government departments.

If you are well organised, good at solving problems and have excellent IT skills, you may find opportunities for a rewarding career in this field.

To get into this job, you’ll need experience of working on projects, for example as part of a project support team. Qualifications will also help, in particular, PRINCE2 certification.

Salary: Starting salaries range between £24,000 and £28,000 a year. Experienced project managers can earn from £30,000 to £50,000 or more.

Salaries depend on the type of role and the scale of the project. Extra benefits like bonuses may be available for successfully meeting deadlines.

Job Title: Animator

Job Profile: Animators bring drawings or computer generated characters to life on screen. If you want to use your imagination, and have creative skills like drawing or modelling, this job could be perfect for you.

To create an image that communicates with your audience, you’ll need patience and the ability to concentrate so that your work is accurate and has detail. You’ll also need good computer skills.

Artistic talent is highly valued within the animation industry and you can still become an animator based on self-taught skills and experience. It is becoming more common for new animators to begin their careers by taking an animation or art-related course to develop their skills before looking for work.

Salary: Starting salaries are around £12,000 to £20,000 a year.

With more experience and skills, earnings are usually around £30,000 a year or more.

You may also earn a bonus at the end of a project, particularly in the computer games industry.

Freelance animators are usually paid a fee for each contract or project. Rates can vary based on experience and the type of production.

ROUTES FOR PROGRESSIONWhether you join Future Tech Studio at age 14 in Year 10 or at 16 in Year 12 the opportunities available to you are vast. Students will be supported in the route they choose by the team at the school.

Employment will always be the ultimate goal for our students, but they may access employment via an apprenticeship or university after their time at Future Tech Studio. If students so choose they can aim to gain employment after they complete their final year at the school with one of our employer partners. The work experience opportunities throughout their time at the school mean students have the chance to make an impression on the employers they work with, which in turn could result in a full time position.

Job Title: Marketing Manager

Job Profile: As a marketing manager, it would be your job to plan the best ways of promoting your employer’s products, services or brand. If you’re organised and love communicating messages and ideas, this could be the job for you.

You will need to have the management skills to lead and motivate a team. You would also need to handle pressure well when you’re working to tight deadlines.

To get into this job you will usually need experience as a marketing executive. Employers are likely to be more interested in your skills, track record and industry knowledge than your formal qualifications.

Salary: Management salaries are usually between £25,000 and £40,000 a year.

Senior managers and marketing directors can earn £50,000 a year or more.

Job Title: Management Accountant

Job Profile: Management accountants are responsible for managing a company’s finances. They look after a company’s accounts. They also find ways of improving profitability and growth. So if you are interested in finance and business, this could be just what you’re looking for.

To do this job you will need to have good maths and computer skills. You’ll need accuracy and attention to detail. You’ll also need good communication skills.

To start working you will have to finish training with one of the professional bodies. Most management accountants choose to do this with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Salary: Starting salaries are between £25,000 and £31,000 a year. Experienced management accountants usually earn between £32,000 and £50,000 a year.

Finance managers and directors could earn between £50,000 and £100,000 a year, depending on the size of the company.

Job Title: Human Resources Officer

Job Profile: If you enjoy working with people and you’re looking for an office role, this could be the perfect job for you. Human resources (HR) officers, also known as personnel officers, look after hiring and developing employees. They look after their welfare too.

Most employers will want you to have qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. You will also need to have a good standard of general education. Previous experience of office work would help.

To become a human resources officer, you need to be tactful and friendly. Sometimes you’ll need to be firm too. You will also need to be careful with confidential information.

Salary: HR assistant administrators can earn around £15,000 to £19,000 a year. Salaries for human resources officers can be between £18,000 and £25,000 a year.

HR managers can earn between £25,000 and £50,000 a year or more.

Job Title: Civil Engineer

Job Profile: As a civil engineer you would plan, design and manage a variety of construction projects. You could work on everything from bridges and tall buildings to transport links and sports stadia.

If you are interested in designing and building things then this job could be ideal for you.

To become a civil engineer you will need excellent maths and IT skills. You’ll also need to be able to explain design ideas clearly and be well organised.

Before you start in this job you would normally need to complete a degree or postgraduate master’s degree in civil engineering.

Salary: Graduate salaries are between £17,000 and £25,000 a year. Experienced engineers earn between £25,000 and £40,000 a year, and senior Chartered Engineers can earn between £50,000 and £80,000 a year.

Job Title: Aerospace Engineer

Job Profile: Aerospace engineers design, build and maintain aircraft and the parts and instruments that go into them. They also work at the forefront of technology on space vehicles and satellites.

If you are passionate about aircraft and spacecraft, and want to be involved in their development, this job could be perfect for you.

To become an engineer you will need excellent maths skills, the ability to solve problems and a methodical approach to work.

To do this job you will normally need a HND, degree or postgraduate award in a relevant engineering subject.

Salary: Starting salaries can be between £20,000 and £26,000 a year.

Experienced aerospace engineers can earn between £28,000 and £40,000. Salaries for senior staff, such as project leaders can range from £45,000 to £65,000.

Job Title: Manufacturing Systems Engineer

Job Profile: Manufacturing systems engineers design and install new production line systems in factories and manufacturing plants. They also work on improvements to get the most out of existing systems.

If you are good at maths, science and IT, and like solving problems, this career could offer you a lot of opportunities.

You normally need a higher education qualification like a HND or degree in engineering to get into this type of job. You may also be able to work your way up after working as a qualified technician, by taking a Higher Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Salary: Starting salaries can be between £22,000 and £25,000 a year. Experienced engineers can earn between £25,000 and £35,000.

Chartered engineers can earn over £40,000 a year.

Studio DayThe working day at Future Tech Studio runs from 9.00am until 5.00pm Monday to Thursday. Students have an early finish on a Friday and will work until 1.20pm.

Monday to Thursday the days are split into 7, 1 hour blocks. 6 lesson blocks with a 20 minute break at 11.00am and a 40 minute lunch.

On Fridays students have 4, 1 hour block lessons from 9.00am – 1.20pm, including a 20 minute break at 11.00am.

Some subjects will have double lessons lasting 2 hours.

On project based learning days the timetable is collapsed and students work in groups on their work based project.

Dress codeAll students are expected to wear a grey business suit, with a white shirt or blouse, accompanied with a Future Tech Studio tie or neck scarf, black shoes and a Future Tech Studio lapel badge.

All Year 10 students are required to have a Future Tech Studio PE Kit which comprises of a choice of a hoodie, t-shirt, shorts and/or sport skirt in the colours of the student house.

Sir James Dyson, CBE, is a British inventor, industrial designer and founder of the Dyson company. He is best known as the inventor of the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner, which works on the principle of cyclonic separation. In 2002 the James Dyson Foundation was set up to support design and engineering in education. The aim of the foundation is to inspire young people to study engineering and become engineers by encouraging students to think differently and to make mistakes.

Sir David “Dave” John Brailsford, MBE & CBE, is a British cycling coach. He was formerly performance director of British Cycling and is currently general manager of Team Sky. Sir Brailsford was selected as an ambassador for students at the Future Tech Studio based on his philosophy of “marginal gains”.

“The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together”. Dave Brailsford (2012)

Karren Brady, CBE, is an English sporting executive, politician, television broadcaster, newspaper columnist, author and novelist. She is the former managing director of Birmingham City Football Club and current vice-chairman of West Ham United. She features in the BBC One series The Apprentice as an aide to Lord Alan Sugar and is the Small Business Ambassador to the UK Government under Prime Minister David Cameron. Karren Brady has long been a champion of women in business.

each of their namesakes are highly respected

The Pupil Premium is grant funding and is in addition to the School’s Delegated Budget. It is allocated to children from low-income families, children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months and children with parent(s) in the Armed Forces. Pupil Premium funding is used to raise attainment, promote social skills, independent learning and positive behaviour in order to increase pupil progress.

At Future Tech Studio we will target additional support strategies to enable every student, however financially disadvantaged, to:

• Improve their levels of progress and attainment

• Close attainment gaps relative to school averages

• Have full access to the curriculum

• Access extra-curricular provision

At Future Tech Studio we will direct the funding to support the following interventions:

• Booster classes

• Assessment preparation

• Coaching and Inclusion

• Travel

• Resources

• Reduced costs for trips and residential visits

• Uniform

The impact of this funding will be to support and enhance our planned intervention strategies for students who would otherwise have been disadvantaged and will allow them to experience the full range of opportunities offered.

PUPIL PREMIUMYoung people are successful in school when parents/carers, teachers and pupils work together to make it possible. We believe in working with parents and carers as partners in their son / daughter’s learning.

We will:

• Support all students through joint reviews and regular updates to parents on progress and targets

• Hold open events at the Future Tech Studio to allow parents and carers to see what their son / daughter is learning

• Maintain an excellent communication system to keep parents and carers fully involved and up to date

When you consider the opportunity Future Tech Studio provides to work with local businesses on real business projects and with key people in their organisations. Being exposed to this from the age of 14 will provide Kyle with a wealth of knowledge skills and experience whilst preparing him for the real world, it also provides a platform for students to show what they have to offer and build relationships with potential employers. Future Tech Studio is open to students from Warrington and surrounding areas. There are two entry points to the school. The first is from Year 10 onwards and the second is from Year 12 onwards. So if you are currently in Year 9 or Year 11 you can apply for a place now to start with us in September 2015.

Students applying to join us in Year 12 must be on track to achieve at least five A* - C grades, including Maths or English. The Future Tech Studio admissions policy is available via our website www.futuretech.warrington.ac.uk or upon request.

The Future Tech Studio can easily be accessed by car, bus, bicycle or foot. Warrington Central train station is also a 15-20 minute walk away.

Network Warrington run a circular bus service which runs straight past the studio. The route is known as the Connect 17 and incorporates Birchwood, Fearnhead, Padgate, Westbrook, Gemini, Longford and Cinnamon Brow.

Students who do not live within proximity of this bus will be able to get their local bus to Warrington town centre and then can either catch a connecting bus, or walk 15 – 20 minutes to the Winwick Road Campus.
