• Medicines – medicines of any sort must be securely kept bythe Hm in Houses and not in boarders’ rooms. Pupils withasthma may and should keep their inhalers on them;however, they must be stored in a secure place and should beproperly labelled. If for any reason your child has to spend thenight in the medical Centre you will be contacted by the Hm.

• Music – may be played in the dormitories at an acceptablevolume but must be turned off during prep, quiet time, whenleaving the room and before lights out and 7.15am every dayat the discretion of the Hm. However, it is acceptable forpupils to listen to music via earphones during prep, providedthat no one else is disturbed by the music.

• Prep (Homework) – takes place daily, every evening, excepton saturdays. On sundays, there will be quiet study time inpupils’ own rooms. Prep will take place in either a classroom, the Library or the pupils’ own rooms and the location will be atthe discretion of the Hm. Pupils must stay in the set locationduring prep unless they have permission from the duty staff.Any pupil wishing to participate in any other activity duringprep time must seek permission from the duty staff prior tothe start of prep. Any prep time missed must be made upeither before or after prep time. Prep must always take priorityover any other activity and participation in other activities willbe prohibited if a pupil is behind with their prep.

• Weekend Arrangements – pupils may return home or tofriend’s home at weekends. However, we create a balancebetween rest and relaxation and activities for those whochoose to stay. On a weekend, lessons will finish at 4.45pm onfriday, and pupils are free to depart if they do not have anyfurther school commitment. Boarders will be asked to confirm

weekend arrangements. should their arrangements bealtered in any way, we require confirmation from either aparent or guardian of the new details at least 24 hours inadvance. If pupils are not going home to parents or guardiansand are intending on staying at a friend’s or somewhere elsefor the weekend/exeat or holiday, parents or guardians of bothparties must contact the Hm to confirm arrangements and toobtain the permission of the Hm. Parents should also informthe Hm if their child is likely to be back late for any reason.

• Activities and Trips – there will be numerous activities that willrun throughout the week during the evenings and atweekends arranged by staff and senior pupils. There will alsobe trips offered to local facilities to best experience Llandoverybut also wider to explore what wales has to offer as a whole. These events, activities and trips will add to both the physicaland intellectual experiences offered.

• Rewards and Sanctions – as with the school day, boardershave considerable expectations placed on them. Goodbehaviour is the norm within our inclusive community and allrules are explained clearly at start of each term. when rulesare broken intervention and a clear sanction structure isconsistently applied.

rewards of House merits, Commendations and highly prizedHouse Colours are conferred to boarders who consistentlyuphold the desired ethos of the College’s boardingcommunity. They serve as evidence of potential in areas ofleadership within the respective boarding Houses and widerschool community.

PREPARATORY SCHOOL HANDBOOK 2018 – 2019 PREPARATORY SCHOOL HANDBOOK 2018 – 2019

your child will be supported by a caring, experienced team andwe want you to feel part of that team too. we believe that the fullboarding experience brings to each pupil a unique opportunityto explore talents and develop them to the full within the contextof a caring and supportive community. Learning to live togetheris a valuable skill. friends for life will be made.

CONTACT - how often and howemail is popular, as are letters and parcels. An email to the Hmcan also be useful to confirm travel arrangements, for example.excessive contact with home which highlights separation fromfriendship groups or activities will stand in the way of a smoothtransition and should be avoided. Be aware that the speed ofcommunication afforded by new technology is both a blessingand a curse! do share any concerns with your Hm immediately.each House has a mobile phone carried by the members of staffon duty at that time and the number is in the College Almanac.Always encourage your child to talk with their Hm. minorproblems are best dealt with in-house.

HOMESICKNESS - what to doHomesickness often forms a natural part of making an effectivetransition from home to school. It should not be forbidden, brushed under the carpet or apologised for. It needs to berecognised and understood. Children need to be reassured that itis normal to feel this way. everyone will deal with it differently; forsome the transition passes with no signs at all, for others theprocess is slower. experienced House staff coupled withsupportive strategies and plans will be implemented by theHouse team to move the delicate transition period forward.

Dealing with homesickness demands a mutual trust betweenhome and school. It is worth remembering that everythingsurrounding the boarder is new. Becoming familiar with newpeople, places, lessons, activities, friends and school routines caneasily cause upset and is at the very least tiring at first. Tirednesscan trigger thoughts of home, family, distant friends, familiarplaces and things. College staff need time to build the feeling ofsecurity vital to allaying feelings of homesickness. Children needthe security of getting to know new people and places here atLlandovery. All the staff make it their first priority to build positivesupportive relationships and get to know pupils individually sothat they can help them settle confidently into the House and theschool.

Keeping busy and making friends are two of the quickest ways tocounteract home sickness. we want the children to share withyou the experience of a new stimulating environment so,encourage them to explore and tell of their achievements withpride!

friends and fun are key to a successful boarding life.

HARMONYIn July 2017, the College hosted the sustainable food Trust’sinternational Harmony in Food and Farming conference.

The conference was inspired by The Prince of wales’ book,Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World, in which he shareshis insights into the timeless laws and principles which permeateeverything around and within us, an understanding of which canenable us to make better sense of the world in which we findourselves. The Prince also suggests that we will be best placed toaddress the climatic, ecological and public health challenges ofour time, if our actions are informed by a deeper understandingof these principles.

Keynote speakers, including The Prince of wales, sir John eliotGardiner, dame ellen macArthur and Tony Juniper explored waysin which principles of Harmony – Geometry, Interdependence,Cycles, diversity, Health, Beauty and Oneness – manifest in food, agriculture and other spheres, including the environment, education, health and music. A range of parallel sessions sawlively discussion around a number of important and challengingissues, including ethical slaughter, local food systems, diets andhealth, the economy, science and spirituality, farm ecosystems, architecture and education.

The seven Principles of Harmony have been successfullyincorporated into the Prep school curriculum. each half term Pre-Prep pupils have studied one Principle in detail, linked to a broadtopic, for example the Principles of Interdependence and

diversity within a water environment such as a pond. They haveinvestigated the different elements of pond life, the plants andanimals and their dependence on each other for survival, preparing pupils to move on to explore Cycles through the studyof rivers and electricity. In mathematics, patterns in numbers andthe golden ratio – a number that occurs frequently in nature –have helped in the understanding of the Principle of Geometryand older Prep pupils have taken this learning into sciencelessons and the study of plant growth, identifying geometricpatterns in pineapples and flowers.

These Principles serve as a guide to living in a more sustainableand harmonious way with our precious world and provide ouryoungest pupils with a chance to look at the world differently andmore sympathetically.

The Conference provided much inspiration for staff who arecommitted to embedding Harmony in the Prep schoolcurriculum and a higher degree of sustainability throughout theCollege. A gardening club has been formed under theenthusiastic and skilful leadership of Huw richards-Price ourformer Head Boy and with the help of the Parents’ Associationand knowledgeable volunteer darrel Leggett. Club membershave worked hard and now boast raised beds, a greenhousemade from plastic bottles, a large growing area in the grounds ofLlandingat and a new orchard. In a short space of time aremarkably varied range of produce, including mixed saladleaves, potatoes, squashes, beetroot, parsnips, broad beans andonions have found their way into the College kitchens. richarddunne, a pioneering educationalist and advocate of embeddingHarmony within curricula, has led workshops for Prep staff andhas presented to the whole College community, inspiringrenewed activity of the senior sustainability Group which isfocusing on recycling and reducing energy usage.

The Principles of Harmony are now firmly embedded in the Prepschool and there are plans for an extension of the initiative intothe senior school.

HOUSE SYSTEM AND HOUSE POINTSThe Prep school aims to promote high standards of behaviour,self-discipline and learning through positive encouragement andreward.

staff will recognise this by speaking to pupils in class, writingcomments in their work books, e-mailing parents with good newsand giving House Points. House Points are to be put on a HousePoint sheet displayed in every classroom, ready for friday’sCelebration Assembly. Outstanding effort and achievement willbe acknowledged with a Commendation or if particularlyexemplary, a warden’s Commendation. The House system runs throughout the Prep school and we willensure that siblings are placed in the same House.

ILLNESS, ACCIDENTS AND SIGNING IN/OUTIf your child feels unwell or has an accident they will usually besent to the College nurse who will take care of them. If they are tooill to remain in school or if hospital treatment is necessary thenyou or whoever is listed as the main contact on the appropriateform will be contacted to make suitable arrangements. There is a signing in and out book in the Prep school receptionfor the parents of any pupils from Pre-Prep to year 6 to sign themout if they are leaving before the end of the school day, or for anywho arrive later than registration time in the morning.

year 7 and 8 pupils should sign in and out at the main Collegereception if they are leaving before the end of the school day or ifthey are later than registration time.

If theincident is serious enough it will be reported to the appropriateform Teacher. It could then be taken to the deputy Head andfinally the warden. Parents may be asked to make anappointment to come into school to discuss any serious situation.Thankfully, incidents such as these are few and far between.

INSPIRING FUTURES PROGRAMMEThe College-wide Inspiring futures Programme (IfP) is designedto inspire career aspirations and help pupils develop their careerplans. A varied programme of work-focused activities will give ourolder Prep pupils, from years 7 and 8, the opportunity to meetprofessionals from different sectors, and learn of the wide rangeof futures open to them. In wales and globally, people with sTemskills are needed (science, Technology, engineering and maths)so there is a focus on the promotion of sTem related fields andthe exciting opportunities within them for both girls and boys.

LAMDA(Please refer to the Forms Booklet)The school recognises the advantages that the London Academyof music and dramatic Arts (LAmdA) Communication Awards canoffer in preparing pupils in the communication skills needed forsuccess in learning and life. no matter what direction pupils maychoose to follow in their future, LAmdA examinations provide theopportunities to nurture your child’s natural abilities.
