    Getting to meet new people and spend timewith friends in a relaxed environment is a benefitmany of our residents enjoy when they liveon campus.

    I had the best experience of my life this yearand met a lot of new friends. I made really greatconnections with my fellow floor mates and my RAwas always there when I needed her support.-

    There are activities throughoutcampus that give residents

    opportunities for involvement in campuslife. Some of the great events throughoutthis year have been Pie Eating contests,Winter Wonderland, Door Decoration contests,Waffle Wednesdays, Maher Olympics, SundaeSundays, BBQs and Padres Games.

    Our Residence Hall Association organizesgreat events throughout the year as well, such as

    Earth Day in the Valley and USD Relay for Life.The most popular RHA event is the SkatingThrough the Decades. At this event, residentsfrom each housing area,dressed representing theirdecade 50s, 60s, 70s,80s, 90s, 2000, whileskating to the music aswell as enjoying food &activities from each eraat a local skate rink.

    USD always has fun bands orconcerts out on Plaza Major whichmake eating outside and enjoyingthe San Diego sun even better!- former Missions B Resident,Lauren Winkleman current

    Alcal Vista Resident

    The Diverse-tea program focuses on a rangeof social justice issues and creates a space forstudents to explore these topics. Additionalprograms are planned to meet student needsand interests throughout the semester, includinholiday celebrations and stress-relievingprograms during midterms and finals.

    The preceptorial classes taking part in the unity communiexplored the concepts of political and

    community participation. Several of themjoined the 350.org environmental actioday on 10/10/10 and worked in teamsto enhance the community surroundingUSD. Some students worked to createtrails in nearby Tecolote Canyon,

    Living on campus has been such a rewarding experience.Being a part of RHA has allowed me to establish lastingbonds with fellow residents, as well as contribute to the

    Living on campus has great advantages when itcomes to parking, great dining options, study

    space and getting to retreat to your ownspace between classes. Everyday happeningslike going to athletic events and speakers

    with the entire floor, shopping at the open-airmarkets or shopping at the organic T Mercadoare some of the great experiences that makeliving on campus unique.

    Camino Hall (Male) and Founders Hall(Female) Freshmen

    Camino Hall and Founders Hall are two separatebuildings, connected by a walkway bridge, whichinclude resident rooms on the second floors withclassrooms and administrative offices on the first

    floors. Camino Hall is for fresh-men male residents and FoundersHall is for freshmen female residents.Residents are assigned to double, tripleand quadruple occupancy rooms. ACommunity Director, eight ResidentAssistants, and a Resident Ministerreside in the halls. These residenceswere originally built as the San DiegoCollege for Women. Their uniquedesign offers most of the rooms a view

    of beautifully landscaped courtyards.Most resident are provided an extralong twin bed (80). Each resident alsoreceives a chest of drawers, desk anddesk chair. Most of the rooms havewood parquet flooring. Rooms havewireless Internet and cable televisionaccess. Showers, toilets and JohnnySquares (assigned sinks) are located oneach hall. Laundry rooms and vendingmachines are also provided. Camino Founders are conveniently located near

    classrooms, the library, chapel, a desig-nated covered parking area, La Palomaand Berts Bistros and theater. Lounges

    with large LCD TVs are located in each hall. Theuniversity community standards designates Camino-Founders as a no alcohol living area regardless of ageor class status.

    Maher Hall (co-ed) Freshmen

    Maher Hall is located on the top three floors of thefive-story building, which includes classrooms and

    offices on the first two floors. Maher is co-ed bywing. Most of the rooms are triples or quads, witha very limited number of double or single rooms.A Community Director, eight Resident Assistantsand a Resident Minister reside in this area. Allrooms are carpeted. Each room has its own bath-room, including toilet, sink, and shower. The residents are responsible for cleaning their own bath-rooms. Each resident is provided with an extra lon(80) twin bed, chest of drawers, desk and deskchair. In addition, each room has wireless Interneand cable television access. Most rooms have a vieof Mission Bay, Tecolote Canyon, or the fountainin front of Maher. This residence hall is centrallylocated near classrooms, the library, bookstore, macenter, Aromas and the Hahn University Center. ATV lounge and study lounge are both located on

    the fifth floor. The university community standardesignates Maher Hall as a no alcohol living arearegardless of age or class status.

    Valley Housing

    Valley Housing consists of both Missions A andMissions B housing areas, plus the San Antoniode Padua and San Buenaventura apartments. Thisresidential area is a short walk from the main campus. The Mission Crossroads building is the cen-trally located lounge facility for the Valley Housin

    Complex. A laundry room, large screen TV, copymachine, vending machines, campus courtesyphones, plus study and lounge areas are all availabto serve the needs of area residents. Additionally,the front desk staff encodes room key cards, givesinformation, provide vacuums, a movie rental ser-vice and other sundries for Missions residents. ThOffice of Residential Life is located in the MissionCrossroads building.

    This area also includes the Missions Caf andFitness Center. This center is an 8,515-squarefoot, wellness-focused facility located in the heart

    of Missions housing. Designed to strengthen theminds, bodies and spirits of students, the fitnesscenter features a yoga/pilates exercise room, cardioequipment, strength training, medicine balls andother balance tools. The Missions Caf is a full-service coffee/juice bar and sandwich shop featurian assortment of healthy food choices and latenight snack options including fresh organic foodssuch as sandwiches, salads, and frozen yogurt.

    Rm AssnmentsPriority for new resident room assignments isbased on when the $500 Commitment Depositwas received by the Admissions Office. PleaseNote: The $500 Commitment Deposit servesas the Room Prepayment. No further deposit isnecessary to reserve your campus housing. (The

    earliest commitment deposits begin arriving fromnew students each year in December.) For LLCsthe deposit date will establish priority preference choices within the Missions B buildings.

    Reading the descriptions of the campus living awill give you an idea of the various residence halloptions available. Freshmen are not eligible to livecampus apartments. Both male and female first ystudents are eligible to live in Maher Hall, MissioA, or Missions B. [Missions B is the freshman

    housing area where students participating in LLCs or Honors will bassigned.] First year female students are eligible to live in FoundersHall and first year male students are eligible to live in Camino Hal

    Lvn Learnn CmmuntesA Living-Learning Community (LLC) is a group of students who tsimilar classes together, live near one another and experience collega way that is much more than just living in a residence hall or gointo class. Each community is built around a theme like social justicescience and transformation, sustainability or faith. By living near yoclassmates, you will be able to share ideas, discuss different perspecoutside of class and enjoy the company of friends with similar pass

    For fall 2011, the living-learning communities will be located inthe Missions B housing area, which features mostly double rooms,some single rooms, shared bathrooms and study and lounge spaceson each floor. The Missions B housing area is located in the Valley,home to the Missions Caf and Fitness Center, a community kitchthe community garden and many other first-year students. For moinformation on these enriching and unique communities, please seour web site at www.sandiego.edu/residentiallife. Information willalso be provided during preceptor class sign ups. Any student thathas selected a preceptorial class associated with a LLC theme willautomatically be placed in the LLC housing area in Missions B.

    Missions A (co-ed) Freshmen

    Missions A is a freshmen hous-ing area that offers suite-styleliving, for 250 residents and

    is co-ed by floor. There aretwelve three-story buildings.Each floor accommodateseight residents in either doubleor a limited number of singlerooms. The suites are fullycarpeted and have a comfort-ably furnished living room,two bathrooms with showers,toilets and sinks. The residentsare responsible for cleaningtheir own bathrooms. Each

    resident has an extra-long (80) twin bed, chest ofdrawers, and desk with chair. Each room has wire-less Internet and cable television access. These unitsare located along the edge of Tecolote Canyon andsome have a view of Mission Bay. A CommunityDirector and ten Resident Assistants reside inMissions A. The university community standardsdesignates Missions A as a no alcohol living arearegardless or age or class status.

    Missions B (co-ed) FreshmenNew 2011 2012Living Learning Communityand Honors Housing

    Missions B is a designated freshmen housing areaand is home to the Living Learning Communitiesand Honors Housing. Missions B consists of four,three-story buildings. The Missions B complexis co-ed by floor and houses 350 residents. ACommunity Director, twelve Resident Assistants,and a Resident Minister reside in this complex.Each floor houses approximately 30 residents infully carpeted single or double rooms and provides

    two furnished lounge areasone designated as astudy area while the other has a university-providedlarge LCD TV. Each resident has a bunkable,extra-long (80) bed, chest of drawers, desk andchair. There are two bathroom areas on each floorwith toilets, sinks, showers and lockers where toi-letries can be secured. The third floor rooms havewindow seats. These four buildings are surround-ing a courtyard. The university alcohol policydesignates Missions B as a no alcohol living arearegardless of age or class status.

    PLEASE NOTE: When placingrequested roommates together, it istheir average date of their deposits thatestablishes priority for assignments.If the building where you live ismore important than the specific

    student you will be living with,please think about your preferencesbefore confirming a roommate. Onceroommate information is received inmid July, we encourage you to speak

    with your roommate on a regular basisto get to know each other and planfor your shared space. Residential Lifestaff will be available to assist you setguidelines for living together uponyour arrival on campus.

    Campus apartments are available for sophomore,junior, and senior undergraduate students. ThePresidio Terrace apartments and part of one buildingin Manchester Village are available for graduate andlaw students. All apartments have wireless Internet

    access and are cable ready with TV hookups. Severalfaculty and Resident Ministers reside in the campusapartments along with area Community Directorsor Assistant Community Directors, and Resident

    Assistants. The apartments are very popular and

    therefore largely filled quickly each year by continuingstudents. Each living room has a sectional or sofa andchair; dining table and chairs, stoves and refrigeratorsare included in the kitchens. The room rates for all theapartment complexes include the cost of utilities andon-site maintenance.

    San Antonio de Padua (co-ed) Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

    The San Antonio de Padua apartments offer 41 unitsconsisting of studios and one-bedroom apartments.

    A laundry room, study lounge and recreation roomare located on the ground level below the three floorsof apartments. Each unit is entered from an interiorcorridor and each west-facing unit has a balcony. Aswimming pool is located at the south end of thebuilding. The Assistant Community Director, threeResident Assistants, and one Resident Faculty memberlive in SAP. Continuous occupancy (includingChristmas Break, Intersession, and Spring Break) is

    available at no additional cost for those residents whofulfill the entire academic year agreement period.

    San Buenaventura (co-ed) Sophomores,Juniors and Seniors

    San Buenaventura opened in fall 2007 and is thenewest residence hall on campus. The building islocated in the valley between Missions A Suitesand San Antonio de Padua and has many perks tooffer residents. An Assistant Community Director,eight Resident Assistants, two Resident Faculty, andone Resident Minister reside in San Buenaventura

    apartments. These apartments include large bedrooms,living rooms, kitchens and large bathrooms. There aretwo fully-equipped recreation rooms in the building

    with large screen televisions plus several study rooms.For the convenience of residents, San Buenaventuraalso has its own laundry room plus three elevators andeven an adjacent outdoor putting green.

    Alcal Vista Apartments (co-ed) Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

    The Alcal Vista apartments (Borrego, Cuyamaca,Laguna, and Palomar) include 192 apartments and are

    located adjacent to the Sports Center Complex (gym,locker rooms, weight room, pool and tennis courts).The majority of these units have two bedrooms, twobathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. Each of thesetwo-bedroom/two-bathroom units accommodatesfour residents. The three-story buildings are clusteredaround three courtyards and feature the SpanishRenaissance architecture that is used throughout themain campus. A reception desk, laundry facilities,study rooms, wide-screen TV, lounge, and staff officesare located on the first floor of Palomar Hall. ACommunity Director, Assistant Community Director,15 Resident Assistants, two Resident Faculty, and

    three Resident Ministers reside in the Alcal Vistaapartments. The Alcal Vista apartments are the homeof the Second Year Experience (SYE).

    Manchester Village (co-ed) Sophomore,Junior, Senior, Graduate and Law Residents

    The design of Manchester Village responds to

    student requests for more apartments with singleoccupancy bedrooms. The apartments have eitherfour single bedrooms or two double bedrooms

    with shared bathrooms, living and dining areas andkitchens. All residents are provided wireless Internetaccess. Manchester Village includes study rooms,a laundry room, fitness room, and two levels ofunderground parking. A Community Director, sevenResident Assistants, two Resident Ministers reside inManchester Village. Continuous occupancy (includingChristmas Break, Intersession, and Spring Break) isavailable at no additional cost for those residents whofulfill the entire academic year agreement period.

    University Terrace Apartments (co-ed) Juniors and Seniors

    The University Terrace apartments offer a matureliving environment for upper class undergraduatestudents. Each of the 38 University Terrace apartmentshas two bedrooms and either one or two bathroomsfor three or four residents respectively. The apartmentsare furnished with sofa and chair, dining table andchairs, desk, chest of drawers, refrigerator and stoveplus extra long (80 in.) twin beds. These units (withthe exception of the A level) have large sun decks with

    views of Mission Bay and Point Loma. The complexalso has two laundry rooms, two study room areasand a recreation room. Phone service, cable TV, and

    wireless Internet access are provided. Four ResidentAssistants reside in the University Terrace apartments.Continuous occupancy (including Christmas Break,Intersession and Spring Break) is available at noadditional cost for those residents who fulfill theentire academic year agreement period.

    Presidio Terrace Apartments (co-ed) Graduate/Law and Family Residents

    Designated as a graduate and law student housingarea, the Presidio Terrace apartments are located onLinda Vista Road next to campus. There are 43 one-bedroom apartments furnished with sofa and chair,dining table and chairs, desk, chest of drawers, a fullsize bed, refrigerator and stove. There is a laundryroom on site. Phone service, cable TV and wirelessInternet access are provided. An Assistant CommunityDirector resides in the Presidio Terrace apartments.Continuous occupancy (including Christmas Break,Intersession, and Spring Break) is available at noadditional cost for those residents who fulfill theentire academic year agreement period.

    Itisnotnecessarythatyouselectyourownroommate. Our assignment software will match you

    with a roommate based upon your room type andbuilding preferences, profile responses and the dateof deposit. If you would like to be actively involvedin the selection process, you may sort the profilequestions to find potential roommates with responsessimilar to your own. Then you will be able to utilizethe email function within the housing portal tocontact them and exchange additional information todetermine whether you would like to be roommates.

    Youwillbeableto logbackintothehousingportaland perform new profile sorts as more students havecompleted the online application, which may resultin additional potential roommates with responsescompatible with yours.

    Ifyoualreadyknowanothernewincomingfreshmanstudent whom you would like to live with, enter thefirst name, last name, or USD ID of the roommateyou would like to request. A list of results will bedisplayed listing the screen name of the roommateyou are requesting assuming that student has alreadysubmitted an online housing application. Applicantsdetermine their unique screen name during thePersonal Details step of the application.

    Onlyselectroommatesifyouarecertainofbeingplaced with them. If your first preference is asingle room but you have requested a roommate,

    your roommate selection will take precedence

    over your room type request. [Please note thatsingle room requests are limited and cannot beguaranteed. Single rooms will be assigned basedupon date of deposit.] If you are choosing to livein a Living Learning Community, your roommatemust also choose to live in a Living LearningCommunity.

    Iftheroommateyouwouldliketorequestisnotyet listed, you must wait until that applicant hascompleted the two steps (Personal Details ande-Transactions) of this application process in orderfor him or her to appear on the list.

    Therequestedroommate(s)willbenotifiedbye-mail

    (USD e-mail address) of your request and then be ableto log on and accept or decline. Roommate requestsmust be mutual among all roommates in order to beconsidered confirmed roommates. Therefore, bothroommates must request and confirm each other.

    Onlymutuallyconfirmedroommatescanbeplacedtogether and their commitment deposit dates will beaveraged to establish priority for assignment.

    ThoselistedasconfirmedroommatesasoftheJune 19, 2011 deadline, will be the roommate(s)the assignment software will be utilizing to makeroommate matches. Any changes made after the June

    19, 2011 deadline will not be honored. Forthosewhowereunabletosubmittheironlinecampus housing application by the Sunday, June19, 2011 deadline, the portal will reopen onMonday, July 11, 2011. Please note that all e-mailnotifications and confirmation will be sent to yourUSD e-mail account.

    * New incoming transfer students should also complete all of the above

    steps. However, available spaces usually involve one vacancy in an

    apartment. Thus, new incoming transfers in most cases will be assignedto those available spaces based upon their deposit dates (which will

    determine their priority for assignments), room type and building

    preferences and it is less likely that transfers may be able to select theirown roommates.

    Tram - USD provides tram services between themain campus and the east and west ends of campusfrom 7 am to 11:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.Trams are equipped with lifts making them accessiblefor students with disabilities.

    Bicycles -Bike shelters or racks are located near

    every residence hall. Always lock your bike and storeit in a designated area. If you store a bicycle in anunauthorized area, it will be removed.

    Parking Permits - Cars, motorcycles, and mopedsmust be registered with the Parking Services Department.Parking is very limited and regulations are strictlyenforced.     Things to Bring - Most twin beds at USD areextra-long length (80 in.). [The exception wouldbe some of the twin beds in Founders Hall which are75 inches long.] We encourage our students to bringextra-long fitted sheets that will fit both the extra-long(80) and the standard (75) university mattresses.

    Camino/Founders, Maher, Missions A and MissionsB residents will receive information in June regardingthe purchase of bed and bath linens and rental of aMicroFridge (a 2.3 cu. ft. auto-defrost refrigerator witha separate freezer combined with a microwave oven).This information is also available on the ResidentialLife website.

    There are shopping areas close to campus; plus youcan buy many items on campus at the Bookstore,University Center mini-market or the Alcal Bazaar.The Alcal Bazaar, scheduled during the first full week

    of classes, hosts representatives from more than 50vendors offering clothing, posters, plants, jewelry, andmuch more.

    Internet Access - The University of San Diego hawireless Internet access available in all buildings oncampus, including residence halls and lounge areas.Computers with wireless (WiFi) can connect to the

    wireless network usd when you arrive on campus.Your residence hall room is also equipped with a wir

    (ethernet) port, which can be used by devices withouwireless ability. Please note that, due to possibleinterference problems, personal wireless routers willnot be allowed in the residence halls.

    To use Internet access on campus, you must have avalid MySanDiego account, a current Antivirus prograand critical system updates installed on your computeTo help you prepare, you can visit sandiego.edu/helpfor more information on university requirements and

    download a free copy of Symantec Endpoint Security.Our wired and wireless network allows you to use

    various other devices on campus. Some of these(including gaming devices and TiVos) can only work a wired connection, while other devices (such as wirelprinters) are not supported on campus. Please visitsandiego.edu/help to learn more about supported andunsupported devices.

    New students are required to sign up for aMySanDiego account. The MySanDiego accountgives students access to the housing sign up portal,campus network from their residence hall room, e-maInternet access and a variety of on-campus services.

    This account will also give you access to our ToreroMail (powered by Google), which you can continue touse after graduation. You can create your MySanDiegoaccount approximately 24 hours after your depositis processed by Admissions. To create it, please visitmy.sandiego.edu and click Open an Account.     Mail - Most campus residents receive their mailat the university Mail Center located in Loma Hall.Manchester Village residents have mailboxes assigned tothem and are located in Building II, just past the lobbyand elevators. Mail and packages are first received bythe Loma Hall staff, then routed to Manchester Villagefor final sorting. Usually all mail and packages are ready

    for pick up by 2 p.m. at either location: Loma Hall orManchester Village.The University Terrace apartments and Presidio

    Terrace apartments are on a USPS route and none oftheir mail or packages are handled at all by the universityMail Center staff.

    Storage is limited, and while we understand large itemsneed to be shipped ahead of your arrival on campus, weask that you refrain from sending anything prior to two

    weeks in advance of move-in day.We will rent a limited-sized storage unit for two weeks

    leading up to move-in day, and keep it for two weeksafter. Please make sure all your shipped items picked up

    as close to move-in day as possible.For more information, call the Mail Center at

    Telephones - Due to the high usage of cell phonesby students, residence hall rooms are not automaticallyequipped with telephones or telephone numbers.Emergency and hallway courtesy phones can be usedin an emergency to contact USDs Office of PublicSafety by dialing ext. 2222 or 911. If a resident student

    wants to activate USDs provided phone service theymust provide their own phone instrument and contactTelecommunications at (619) 260-7500.

    ID Photos - Please be sure to turn in your photo toCampus Card Services by Friday, July 29, 2011 so thatyour ID card will be ready to be encoded with your IDinformation, meal plan and room access prior to yourarrival in August.

    Since you have chosen to live in a residence hall at theUniversity of San Diego, you must go to the ResidentialLife web site at www.sandiego.edu/residentiallifeand complete the online Application and ElectronicTransaction Agreement through the Residential LifeHousing Portal. All agreements materials are availableon our web site under Residential Life Publications.

    Please read the Terms and Conditions and CommunityStandards to become familiar with all of the conditionsof the housing agreement. Be sure that you understandthe legal obligations of contractual agreements of thiskind or be sure to ask someone to explain them to youif you have any questions. Read the agreement carefully,consider your choices thoroughly, and provide thenecessary information completely.
