Many of us remember the great wisdom M. Scott Peck shared in his worldrenowned book of wisdom called The
Road Less Traveled. The authors of this publicationhave drafted on his wisdom and created conceptsof living beyond the road most traveled.
The agreement with self to live outside of the value box we perceivedfrom our communities and families creates an interesting conflict within our own ego about compliance, defiance, and attunement totrue self. Learning who we are beyond the definition of what othersproject onto us has the duality of fear and freedom.
On behalf of the staff of Holistic Discoveries, may we invite you to discover yourself in the powerful articles included in this publicationand let us know how you experienced yourself living beyond the roadmost traveled.

As I journey this mountain called life,
I find pathways of joy and of strife,
But now and again I find rest,
To prepare for an on-coming test,
Of whether the wisdom I’ve grasped
Will add to my strength of the past,
Or whether these moments of peace,
Is only God’s help to release
A power, a strong inner drive
Which urges me on, that’s alive,
As I strive toward the Heavenly light,
In this journey toward eternal life.
So, I reach for God’s hand and I see
That my journey need not lonely be,
For within my own self I do find,
That the gift from Creator’s wise mind,
Guides my steps as I work toward that place
Of promised Divine, Sacred Grace.

The Old Dirt RoadBy Sister Pat Rooks
There is something peaceful and serene about walking
down an old dirt road. It is always bereft of those
hundreds of speeding cars, full of road rage and
competition, found on highways and expressways.
Some of the most treasured memories of my childhood are associated
with the old dirt road that led through the woods and into the corn
and tomato fields. It was a place of quiet and contemplation that
made you feel your oneness with all creation. I have come to see it
as the most important road of my life.
7
Sister Pat is a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur whose charism is showing forth the goodness of God in working in education in peace
and justice especially for the poor. Presently she is ministering in parish religious education. You can contact her at [email protected].
However, I also have chosen to walk on other roads,
roads with many more traffic rules and scheduled times
for stopping and going. “Life is difficult” wrote Scott
Peck as he began his book, The Road Less Traveled.
Robert Frost, who I believe, actually coined the phrase
The Road Less Traveled, wrote, “I shall be telling this
with a sigh, somewhere ages and ages hence. Two roads
diverged in a wood and I, I took the one less traveled
by and that made all the difference.”
“Difficult” and “with a sigh” seem to conjure up for
me the ever present Paschal Mystery, which envelopes
our lives on these many roads which we travel whether
we are aware of it or not. The Paschal Mystery is pres-
ent in nature as we watch the seasons turn from death
to new life so very evident on the Old Dirt Road. It is
also present in the Christian story of passion, death and
resurrection. But it is also present in our lives as we
struggle with difficulties, and sigh with the expenditure
of physical and emotional energy. Yet in all, I believe
that we grow spiritually in renewed life, higher con-
sciousness and greater love.
As I think back over the times in life when I chose
a road not too high on the popularity scale, it usually
entailed much effort and energy to walk its challenging
way. Yet, at its end, there was a sense of accomplishment
and inner peace. To speak of “difficult” roads or
“telling with a sigh,” can sound depressing and lead
to misunderstanding. For the road less traveled is
inspiringly challenging and invigoratingly rewarding.
So, to travel it well and willingly, will always improve
one's skills, hone one's motives and create a depth of
love in one's heart. Truly taking the road less traveled
will make all the difference. But for me, none compare
to the Old Dirt Road.
8
n preparing to write on this topic, I began to think of
cultural icons who have taken the road less traveled and
who serve as role models to show the rest of us that
“being true to yourself” is indeed why you came into
Being. These mentors also show us that in serving our Highest
Self, we in turn offer great service to others and to our world.
Many faces and names crossed my mind and heart, but
one among them stood out. You may recognize him as I
describe him to you — rather short, a bit stocky in build, bright
blue eyes, two flippers, webbed feet, shiny slick hair in a distinct
black & white pattern. Your Inner Kids may have guessed by
now — I’m describing Mumbles of Happy Feet fame!!!
For those of you who have seen this movie, you may
already know why I have chosen this amazing little guy with a
big heart. For those who have not seen it — Go See This
Movie Immediately! It is a brilliantly animated spiritual saga
that must be seen to truly be appreciated! You owe it to your
Inner Kids!
Mumbles was born without the ability to sing, which is
the hallmark gift of all Emperor penguins and the key to
their species survival. Instead, Mumbles had a unique and
special gift all his own, the gift of dance! He was born a
natural tap dancer and dance he did! He was truly unable to
contain himself and still his “happy feet”, and equally unable
to croon like his clan! This endeared him to his mother and
embarrassed his father, both of whom were excellent singers.
Unable and unwilling to be someone he was not, Mumbles
embarked on the “hero’s journey” leaving his friends and
family, and venturing out into the world beyond any he had
known or imagined.
Freeze Frame: How many of you find the courage and
self-sincerity that this very young penguin found within
himself? How often have you enacted inauthentic roles and
behaviors in order to retain attachments to others and to
barter for love and approval? How familiar is the path of
supposed success and achievement? How truly fulfilled and

joyful do you feel on that path? These are not rhetorical
questions. They are a call to your deepest essence, your truest
self. They are the bucket of cold water in the face— the wake
up call, the sacred invitation to live your own life, your own
way, and in your own time.
I seriously invite you to sit back, close your eyes
and to embrace these questions and also
the honest answers that arise from
within you. I invite you to make
this your birthday—the day
you give birth to yourself,
to who you are and why
you came. These answers lie
nowhere but deep within you,
awaiting their joyous and refreshing
expression. There is and has never
been anyone who is you, and so the
world awaits your beautiful and unique
contributions. The picture of creation is
not complete without each of us artists showing up with our
bright palettes and flowing brush strokes! You are the artist of
your life and of this amazing mural we call humanity!
Back to the movie and to our dear courageous and wise
friend, Mumbles. Indeed his courage is well-rewarded as he
meets a joyful band of supporters and every manner of sacred
synchronicity toward an amazing unfolding of planetary
upliftment and healing. Truly a beautiful and sacred story
worthy of remembering—in as much as we all came forth
with equally powerful and person potential. We are the ones
we have been waiting for. Heaven appears in any moment in
which we choose joy and peace.
“Living beyond the road most traveled”
requires us to be authentic, true
only to ourselves. This road is
not for the weak of heart.
Neither is the true stuff of
us for we came in love and
we are of love. As Mumbles
so exquisitely shows us by his
example—be yourself, embrace
your truth and the journey it
leads you on — and then all of
Heaven will support and lift you toward
your Greatness and the upliftment of us all!

Kim: What is a holistic description of stress?
John: Stress is a state of mind in which parts of the ego are
conflicted with our experiences of life.
Kim: What causes conflict with ego parts?
John: As children, we needed to please our Mother/Father
values and attend to our own neediness. We experienced their
values and demands and often gave up our own sense of self
through compliance and/or defiance. This ego perception is
projected onto other people who we make into our surrogate
Mother or Father, such as a job supervisor, life partner,
friends, teachers, etc.
Kim: Are you suggesting that we carry these beliefs into our
adult relationships?
John: For the most part that is true, yes. We act out various
forms of aggressive or passive behavior that is created from our
fearful or shameful beliefs. We would like to believe that we
don’t believe the values of our parents; however my experience
suggests that we have attached to their beliefs out of loyalty so
we can continue to belong in our family of origin. Whether
we are compliant or defiant with either parent we still carry
forward our version of what unitized our family, whether it was
functional or dysfunctional behavior.
Kim: Do you think most people realize they carry the energy
of the beliefs of their families?
John: I think it is difficult to realize we not only carry the
energy of our family, but we also carry the energies of their
families and many other generations. It is hard to accept that
we act out their controlling behavior out of loyalty, and since
the experience is so painful, we are numb to its influence on
other people.
Kim: Are there other aspects of stress?
John: Our need to control everything creates the duality of
illusion that we are in control, or another perception, that
we can’t control anything. The conflict within our ego parts
creates many levels of stress at the conscious, subconscious,
and unconscious levels.
An interview with John McMullin, CHT, HC
by Kimberly A. Dorniden, H.C.
11
Kim: Are you saying we always have stress at some level?
John: Yes. What is important for me is to realize that some
stress is necessary to keep us vigilant and sensitive in order to
feel safe and valued. Our conscious stress is polarized around
controlling the behavior of our self and others, and our well
being. Subconscious stress is created from the conflict of our
parent’s values as we knew them compared to how we think
we, and other people measure up to those perceived values.
Unconscious stress is stratified energy that won’t move in our
body and creates irritation and disease.
Kim: How do we control stress?
John: The question is a bit of an oxymoron in that the more
we attempt to control stress the more we create stress by not
being able to control it. However, there are some techniques
we can use to reduce our stress level from day to day.
First; learn not to judge our judgment, shame our shame,
or fear our fear. All human egos compare how we think
we are living our life and how others live their lives, as
to what is expected based on the values we created
about our parents.
Second; we can reduce stress by forgiving our judgment
of our parent’s values and stop projecting what
makes our self or other people, right or wrong, good or
bad. Learning to give our parents ownership of their
behavior, values and choices allows us to create our own
life and experience freedom from their judgment.
A third concept that helps many people, is to accept the flow of
life and realize we can never be in the wrong place at any time.
A fourth method is to create a sensitivity and compassion for
the judgment of others and to realize that no human will
ever know you beyond their own filter system.
A fifth technique is to invite ourselves into stillness and
meditation where we can experience the chatter of our own
ego parts and invite our ego beliefs to become part of us,
rather than part of our ego.
A sixth technique is to create sessions with a counselor or
coach to discuss aspects of our life so we can hear and forgive
our own judgment that otherwise might remain hidden.
Kim: Whew! I think I’m beginning to feel less stressed
about this interview and my expectations.
John: Me too!

didn’t set out to be a psychic, but then I never thought
at age 60 I’d start to ride my own motorcycle. Both
have taken me down winding, unknown, labyrinthian
roads—roads that perhaps should require a sign that
states: “Beware, only the brave should enter here.”
Courage is required for the taking the road less traveled.
The journey is fraught with perils that, had we known before
we began, we might not have taken. I am not one to stay safe-
ly behind. I am a wayfarer, a traveler of the mind’s depths
and the earth’s terrain, and for those like me who chose the
journey, the rewards are greater than imagined. A passage in
my book 23 Days A Celtic Journey reads in reference to a hike
up Mt. Snowdon in Wales:
“Although the climb is not easy still,
I’ll see the majesty of this land,
Beauty I could not have seen
Lest this climb I did make.”
It is only in the taking of the road less traveled that we find
the truth of ourselves and the beauty of the life of which we
are a part.
In my younger years when I made the decision to live my
life as a prayer, I hadn’t quite envisioned how that would play
out in my everyday life. I certainly never imagined that riding
a motorcycle would become my prayer, yet for my first
season of riding, every time I got onto that bike I chanted
“God and my angels are keeping me safe and calm today,
God and my angels are keeping me safe and calm today.”
The chanting has gone by the wayside, but living my life as
a prayer hasn’t. Every thought, deed, word spoken or action
can be committed in prayer, in love. Certainly riding is.
Motorcycle riding is a dangerous sport. There’s no doubt
about it. Riding requires every ounce of my concentration.
My life depends on my attentiveness and intuition. Being in
the moment is not an option. It is a necessity. Being open to
Phillip, my spirit guide, and using my intuition is life saving.
Aside from the mechanical operation of a bike, you also must
be aware of your surroundings—deer, dogs, merging vehicles,
drivers on cell phones, traffic lights, wind draft from
trucks—a thousand signals coming at you every moment
must be taken in, assimilated, processed and acted upon.
IMusings of a Motorcycle Mystic
By Diana Rankin, M.A.
13
I trust my intuition, listening attentively, knowing whether
that driver is going to cross the yellow line, forcing me to the
edge of the lane; knowing whether that driver is going to pull
out in front of me, forcing me to brake hard; whether that
driver is going to pass on a two-lane highway into my lane;
whether the light is going to change; and which of all those
tempting winding, twisting, unknown labyrinthian roads I
should take to find the gifts awaiting me.
I took the road to be a psychic reader, accepted the calling,
received the training, and dedicated my life to the service of
others. The road taken has indeed not been what I expected of
my life, and although different it has by no means been less,
but instead richly rewarding. Every time I witness the heart of
another open to healing because of words that come through
me, I know I have taken the right road for me, the one my soul
chose at a level deeper than I, in my human self, would have
ever dreamed—or dared—to chose.
It is this deeper self that pulls me to Kali, my motorcycle,
as often as possible: Kali, the Mother Goddess, symbol of
dissolution and destruction, she who destroys ignorance and
frees those who strive for union with God by igniting us with
the gift of pure consciousness. I feel her power every time I
turn left or right at the end of the lane. It matters less which
way I turn than that I make the turn.
Perhaps it is the roads not taken we wonder the most
about, the ones we passed for the quicker, seemingly easier
route. It does our hearts no good to spend time wondering of
those roads. There is another road waiting for us. It is up to
us to take it and leave behind the safety of the familiar to
traverse the ever-changing landscape of the unfamiliar and
roads that meander through the highways and byways of life.
Kicking the bike into high gear, I crest a ridge, and I can
see forever. I open to amazement and wonder of the vista
presented to me. A doe and her two fawn graze in the meadow
near the edge of the woods; shadows of tall white pine fall
over golden fields of summer wheat; a green-roofed red barn
stands beside an old wooden farm house in a stand of oak
and ash trees; and the sky is brilliant with the pinks and
yellows of today’s sun’s last hurrah. Something shifts within
me and the air itself shimmers with anticipation of life’s
promise. No longer am I separate from the bike, the road, or
life itself. We are Oneness, and the gratitude I feel is astounding.
I am the symphony of the heartbeat of life and the
pulsating vibration of the pipes that quiver as I back off the
engine. I am the rider; I am the bike; I am the deer on the
other side of the field and I am the field. I am all that ever
was and all that is and all the will be. I am life in all her glory
and all her disparagement. I am the psychic reader, I am the
teacher, who stands on the vista of the your life to look
beyond that which you can only glimpse in this moment in
time, and I hold your heart while together we move away the
mountains that you may open to the panorama of your own
life and begin to see anew.
Perhaps we shall pass on the road, your journey different
from mine, each right for us individually, converging into
one another’s lives at junctures like riders who wave as we
pass one another, one rider going one way, another going the
other way, yet sharing for a brief moment in time, a love of
the open road and a roaring engine beneath us.
The road less traveled may seem to take us away from
the dreams we once had for our lives, when circumstances
divert us from the paved highways onto graveled paths.
Perhaps it is only after traveling the graveled lane for awhile
that we can come to understand the road we chose brought
us to a higher calling.
Eventually I’ll return home. We all do. Whether we are
coming back from the energy of the reading or the bike ride
down country roads, we’ll come again to that road that winds
back on ourselves. The road always winds back, taking us
where we need to go at the moment we need to be there.
All we need do is take the journey.

here’s a lovely Scottish ballad that goes something like “Oh, I’ll take the high road and you take the low road,
and I’ll get to Scotland before ye…” Many’s the poet or author whose words have sought to capture life’s
meanings via the metaphor of “the road.” It seems that we’re all trying to get “home”—whatever that means to
us, and the road between here and there appears to be where we literally and figuratively can “find our selves.”
Many would argue that it’s not quite as simple as choosing between the high road and the low road. What about the
side roads, the back roads, the detours…? What about the path of least resistance? As fascinating as these complexities
may be, let’s start with the assumption that there are basically only three roads open to us, and—since we know that
“to be alive” implies motion—we’re going to choose to place ourselves on one of them at any given time. Let’s say that
the three are The High Road, The Low Road, and the Path of Least Resistance. Life itself, appears to conspire to give
us multiple opportunities to choose our road, our direction. It also gives to us, the opportunity to “choose again.”
And again. And again. Life is gracious that way.
Beyond The Road Most TraveledBy L. Lexie Tyus, L.I.S.W.
T
17
THE LOW ROAD is defined largely by previous passages and
experiences. It is frequently chosen out of fear or guilt.
Imagine trying to go forward by looking into a rearview
mirror attached by a heavy apparatus to your shoulders.
You can’t see ahead at all, as your only visual cues come from
the past. Frequent stumbles and constant uncertainty make it
impossible to see the present, or where you are. Cynicism,
bitterness and frustration mark this road. Vision obscured,
there is little hope for joy or inspiration here.
THE MIDDLE ROAD, or The Path of Least Resistance,
is chosen when we get worn down by perceived failures and
come not to care much. It’s a colorless bland place, this
middle road—negotiated rather like slogging through mud
wearing ankle weights. Everything looks pretty much the
same here. It’s marked by boredom and depression.
Admittedly, there are few defeats, but fewer yet, are any
challenges and victories. This is a dismal, plodding place.
THE HIGH ROAD? Ah, here’s a different place altogether.
This road resembles a highway. It is well paved and maintained,
and provides frequent clear signs to give guidance to the
journeyer. Marked by interesting twists and turns, this road
goes steadily up. More interesting yet, this road is one-way.
Previous passages become obscured almost immediately,
leaving those who travel here to carry with them only the
benefits and wisdom gleaned from where they’ve been.
Those on this road assist one another without hesitation.
Compassion and joy, dignity and integrity characterize this
road and it travelers.
So, to revisit the ballad: High road or Low road, we’ll all
likely get to our Scotland, our destination. The question is,
on which road and what will we learn along the way. The
uncomfortable likelihood is that we’ll all occasionally choose
the low road and go backwards, and we’ll all spend some
time mucking along in the mud of the middle road. Which
is the road most traveled? The answer is up to each of us.
Perhaps life’s greatest gift is that we always have the option
of recalling who we really are and who we belong to. It’s
easiest to get up onto, and then stay on, the high road when
we have been willing to go inward (some would call this
“God-ward”). When we go inward, we can nourish the
all-important relationship with our self and our Creator.
When we allow these deeper relationships to unfold, the
tumults and dramas (i.e., the “twists and turns”) of life on
the lower road will trouble us less, and we will be free to
choose where we find our selves. May we all come to find
our selves and meet each other on the High Road.

The road most traveled teaches us to live through our job,
partner, children, physical beauty,
money, and other tangible assets. We create
behavior to control self and others through
the dramas of defending, proving, hiding,
shaming, martyrdom, rescuing, punishing, and
self sabotage. Thus, we become the hidden messages
of our ego needs for self preservation and survival, and
we feel anxious and trapped by our own inner war.
Finding new realms beyond our own internal conflict is a process
of forgiving the judgment of self and realizing that each of us has
a unique road to travel for our wisdom in this incarnation. There
is always a light and shadow side of every life experience that helps us to
discover who we are by experiencing who we are not.
If each of us is to fulfill the journey of our Higher Self Destiny, then what
remains is the choice of perception experienced by the Lower Self. Another realm of
our consciousness is to realize the perfect synchronous and serendipitous aspects of
life in which we connect with the mind of One and realize we are a part of the total
expression. The co-creator self becomes aware that our experiences, outside of
ourselves are merely the ego’s version of life; and what is left is the realization that only the inner
wisdom from our heart center connects us with the mind of One.

he theme for this month “Living Beyond the Road
Most Traveled” has given me the most fun dancing
with the thought of it. I waltzed with it, jitterbugged
with it and then finally did an Argentina tango with it. To
come to what my friend Frank suggests and that is to “skinny
dip in the pool of thought”.
The word “beyond” challenges me to wonder how am I
living with the beliefs that I have? That thought alone has
always caused me to constantly houseclean my mind and
organize my beliefs. Some beliefs work and some don’t.
When I identify where my beliefs came from or come from:
parents, school, neighbors, peers, books, movies and experience,
it was easy to change and expand on the ones that work and
let go of the ones that don’t work. The era we were born into
imprints us for life, as do all of the people, places and things.
We probably can never be totally rid of a belief, we can only
modify it. New thoughts that take us beyond what we know
can nullify or surround an old belief so that it can give us
an opportunity to live more joyfully, abundantly and with
purpose. That purpose will serve us well and will influence,
in a good way, the world we create and live in. Who we are,
what we talk about, and when we walk that talk, attracts
more of what we are thinking and asking for into our lives.
More often than not, when we begin to expand the
concepts that make up what we believe and live, we find it
is not about going out beyond, but going within where our

truth lives. This self search is always ongoing but the longer
we live, love, and experience life, the more exciting a
challenge it is but in a good way. Being nervous about being
different lessens and eventually, being nervous and fearful has
no sting because it is only with our self that we compare our
achievements. With every lesson learned and every step
forward, self confidence is bolstered and attracts to
us more events which allow stepping outside the
bounds of conformity and draw people
to us who are supportive.
I also believe there is a Universal
Source I call God that is as close to us as
the air we breathe. We were created from it,
we return to it and we live in it and that gives
us the free will to make choices which is the life
we now lead. Every day becomes a new day to learn
and not to look back if it holds us with chains of negativity
and crimps our style. We daily find a focus that makes us feel
good. Feeling good lets us know that we are in alignment with
our purpose and our God, the Source of Life. It will enhance
our life and then, by its nature, bring joy to our world. If
enough people are living with that kind of concept, it will
eventually encompass the entire world in peace. Peace has to
begin somewhere. We cannot expect the war zones to express
it, or those under siege to live it, but even in a troubled zone,
the heart of any individual can have a focus of wanting to be
kind. Maybe this earth place is just a school for each of us to
learn the next lesson in our evolution, so that when we pass
on we go to another level of enlightenment. Isn’t that what
the word eternity means, no beginning, no ending just a
constant evolving into higher realms and each realm is more
blissful then the one we are in?
Who travels this road on this journey? Many do. Read the
books written by those who know the principles of success,
carefully choose the movies you watch, who your friends are,
and what kind of work you are doing. That is where you will
find the clues about what you need, want, and are asking for.
Even if at present, you are not satisfied with how your life is,
celebrate that because discontent is your power tool to
finding what you do want. Be clear about what you want,
discover that fear can be replaced with love. Remember that
every life change or thought or belief change becomes a
journey and the first step is always the hardest to make.
Always take constant small steps forward until you get where
you are supposed to be. It takes no more effort to dream big
dreams than it does to dream little dreams. Eventually
dreams do come true when we go beyond and live within
everyday creating a belief system that works. As Mike Dooley
says, “thoughts become things, choose the good ones.”
Begin with “skinny dipping in the pool of thought”, dare
to get naked, refreshed and clothed again in new experiences.
Try it, you’ll like it, my friend Frank does and so do I.
Peace has to beg in

erhaps, as a child, you
remember being told that
you were selfish, self centered,
conceited, needy, and a host of other words
suggesting you were child-ish. Thus, we learned to
attach shame and fear to the idea of being needy and
helpless. We didn’t know that all humans are needy.
Physically we need air, food, Planet Earth, and equally
important, we are also emotionally, mentally, and
spiritually needy. Given that we are needy, the question is:
Do we know how to get our emotional
needs met from our own nurturing or do
we depend upon others?
Becoming self-less is realizing that we must
teach ourselves to nurture and value our own
needy ego parts. This process of dialoging with our
needy ego parts allows us to become “inner-dependent”
rather than co-dependent, in which we depend on
others to feel valued and safe. Self realization is an
understanding that we were all incarnated with needy

and deceptive ego parts which we must discover and
re-parent. As we embrace our needy ego parts, the power
to experience ourselves from a compassionate perspective
allows us to grow into a state of being called self-less.
The self we developed through the definition of our parents
created the necessary pain and desire to motivate us to
grow into self and then, to ultimately becoming self-less.
Our self-less consciousness was made possible
through our neediness and the acting out of defended
and proving behavior we used to validate selfishness.
From the self-less consciousness, we become more aware
that we are less attached to the opinions of others and
understand the difference between apathy and compassion.
We notice that we can embrace both sides of any conflict
and we tend to flow with life rather than trying to control
it. We also receive the gift of clear intuition and the
messages of Higher Self. In this state of being, we become
clear mirrors for others to reflect in the process of finding
their own self-less state of being.

Natural Solutions for B e t t e r HealthBy Larry Pahl, L.M.T.
ouldn’t it be great if we had a built-in
mechanism to tell us if we were making
good or bad decisions in our life? When
your head and your heart disagree, you
will know it by the feeling in your gut
that something just isn’t right. Why is this true?
Exciting new research has determined that we not only
have a brain in our head, but also, one in our heart and one in
our gut. The “brain” in our heart, with over 40,000 neurons,
drives us to excel and helps us to reason, contemplate and
problem solve. The “brain” in our gut has more neurons than
in our entire spinal cord. It is the seat of intuition, the center
of our feelings. When we are using all three brains, we are
thinking with our heart and using our intuitive intelligence
to make good choices and good decisions.
So, how do we tap into and trust the power and
intelligence of our intuition? The first step is to believe that
intuition, the ability to feel with our gut, to trust our gut
feeling is within all of us. It has simply been dormant in most
of us, as we have been unaware of the gift and power that we
possess in our stomach.
What an amazing advantage to feel whether we are
making a right or wrong move by synchronizing our head
and heart brain with the intuitive brain in our gut! So, once
we believe that we actually possess this thing called intuition,
it is now up to us to think more with our heart and feel more
with our gut. We have to tune in and actually listen to what our
stomach is telling us. Some things are easy to make sense of.
When we are nervous, we get “butterflies.” When we are really
nervous, we can become nauseated or get a “nervous stomach.”
The bottom line on our intuitive intelligence is this:
if your stomach is quiet, calm and feeling fine, you have
probably chosen wisely. And if, on the other hand, your
stomach feels like the beginning of a serious confrontation,
you had better rethink your decision, because when your
tummy starts talking, it is time to listen and trust your gut!

sometimes think there are two kinds of people:
those who pursue self-knowledge and those who focus
their lives in other directions. I would guess that the
road less traveled is the path of self-awareness.
A few years ago, in a body work training I was con-
ducting, we had reached the stage where my students were
working with the public under my supervision. Two women
were receiving lessons, and at the end of the lessons, we all
gathered together to discuss how the lessons had gone. Both
the women started off their comments the same way: “In the
lesson, I found out that everything I thought I knew about
walking was wrong.” One continued by saying, “That was so
exciting!” But the other said: “That was so depressing.” This
vignette illustrates the difference between the two kinds of
people. To a person seeking knowledge, being shown they are
in error is a wonderful gift. It enables them to become better.
But to a person whose primary drive is not self-understand-
ing, being shown an error may be burdensome or threatening.
Another vignette would be interesting. About thirty
years ago, when I was a new Aikido teacher, the leader of a
therapy group asked me to do a presentation on self-defense.
At one point, as I was talking about psychological prepara-
tion, I made the comment that if you lose a fight you did
something wrong. The people listening became enraged.
30
IFollowing the Road Less Traveled
By Paul Linden, Ph.D.
Luckily, the leader of the group understood what I meant and
what the participants had heard, instead. She explained to me
that they had heard me blaming the victim instead of blaming
the attacker. Once she clued me in, I was able to explain that
there are two reasons why I might be hit: one is that an
attacker throws a punch at me, and the other is that I fail to
block the punch. If the world were fair, I would not have to
expend any energy to keep
myself safe. It would be
the attacker who should
change so that he or she
wouldn't punch me.
However, the only things
under my control are my
actions. If I failed to block
this time, by focusing on
what I did wrong, I can
learn from that and do
better next time. Instead
of blaming the victim, I
was actually trying to
convey an attitude which
would promote ongoing
learning and growth, but that was so foreign to the group
members that they attacked me. Of course, it wasn't their fault
that they interpreted my remarks as they did: our cultural
mindset doesn't encourage a sense of response-ability.
Once I was doing body awareness lessons with a young
man who was referred to me by his psychologist for anger
management. The young man would, for example, get
obsessed with examining some object, and if he asked a ques-
tion about the object and didn't receive a satisfactory answer
immediately, he would get become enraged. My strategy from
day one was to help him notice that anger (and other feel-
ings) took place in his body and could be controlled through
making changes in his breathing and posture. He had great
difficulty taking in this insight, and part of that was a result
of the structure of the English language. He kept making
statements such as, “My mother made me so angry when she
wouldn't give me time to look at the bird.” Notice that his
statement amounted to saying: “It, outside of me, MADE me
do anger in my body.” It took a long time for him to under-
stand that anger was a voluntary behavior which came from
internal decisions he made. It would have been less of a
struggle if the ordinary English expression were something
like, “I did anger when my mother wouldn't give me time to
look at the bird.” My impression is that most people lean
toward the philosophical position that they really aren't
responsible for their feelings and actions, which amounts to
saying that the self cannot be studied and improved.
A key to studying the self is learning to direct attention
or awareness. An interesting exercise in self-awareness and
self-study involves paying attention to the shape of your field
of awareness. I like to think of awareness as being similar to
light radiating from a light bulb. Awareness originates in you
and shines outward onto
your world. As you read
this article, notice the
shape of your awareness
field. I would guess that
you have a narrow beam
of attention shining on
the page in front of you.
Does the page draw your
attention toward it,
or do you have a choice
about the shape of your
attentional field? Could
you, for example, shine
attention on the page
and on the rest of your
surroundings at the same time? That would make your
awareness into a broad field instead of a narrow beam. What
does that feel like? Would you need more practice to do it well?
Does it affect your comprehension of what you are reading?
Once you can feel the shape of your attention, you can
play with noticing the shapes you adopt for various activities
in your life. What about
driving or cooking or mowing the lawn? Does changing the
shape of your attentional field have an effect on how well
you do an activity? Is there a different optimal shape for
different activities, or is there one shape which is generally
the best for any and all activities?
Making this kind of exercise part of your daily life
will certainly take you beyond the road most traveled.

eadlines lately have been promoting the results of
a study suggesting that red wine may have very
important health benefits. If you are looking for
good news about bad habits, or a reason to start
drinking red wine, this has to be magical information for you!
The online version of Nature reported the results of a
study that showed when resveratrol, an ingredient from red
wine, was fed to obese mice, their lifespan was extended.
The researchers studied 165 mice beginning at the age of
1 year, which is equivalent to human middle age. 1/3 of them
were given a healthy diet, 1/3 were given a diet high in calories
and fat, and 1/3 were fed a high-fat diet with the addition of
resveratrol. Both groups of mice on the high-fat diet gained
weight, but those getting the reseveratrol had better health
outcomes. Their livers remained normal size, while the control
group’s doubled in size, and heart tissue was healthier in the
resveratrol group.
At 114 weeks of age, 58% of the animals consuming the
high-fat diet had died, while 42% of those on a normal diet
or taking the supplement had died. A spokesperson for Sirtris
Pharmaceuticals, a company founded by the lead research
that is conducting human trials on resveratrol and diabetes
said, “the molecule prevented most, if not all, of the side
effects of being obese.”
Before you uncork the wine bottle, let’s insert some
reality. First, resveratrol is found in the skins of grapes,
peanuts and some berries. You do not have to consume wine
or supplements to get a healthy dose of it in your diet daily.
Second, the amount of resveratrol fed to the mice daily
was the equivalent of that found in 20 bottles of red wine –
an amount you are unlikely to consume. And, there has been
no research conducted to determine potential adverse effects
of consuming mega-doses of resveratrol over time. “We have
much to learn about resveratrol’s safety and effectiveness in
humans,” stated Dr. Richard Hodes, director of the National
Institute on Aging, which funded the study. There is, however,
considerable research documenting the negative effects of
carrying extra weight and consuming alcohol.
Researchers continue to pursue what I believe is
misguided research – looking for a magic bullet found in
isolated nutrients that can have a positive effect on health,
while ignoring the bigger picture of the benefits of dietary
excellence, which have been proven in massive studies like
The China Project.
In the meantime, my advice about red wine is to enjoy
it as an occasional treat, if you like it. Remember, that there
should be a clear difference between the daily fare and treats,
and that the blurring of this distinction is one of the major
reasons people develop degenerative conditions.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

ANDY STUCK, PH.D., L.I.S.W. ORDERS OF LOVE / MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL:A Family Systems Approach to Freedom
While traditional therapy often centers on the individual, Orders of Love concentrates on the family system, offering unique insight into the ties that bind us to others. Orders of Love is not about pathology or diagnosis, rather, it is about the honor, respect and love that promote freedom from suffering.
Love flows among relationships: from parent to child, between partners and among family members.Ignoring those orders brings about consequences that inhibit our ability to be successful in other realms ofour lives, like relationships and careers.
Orders of Love works for people who feel burdened by personal issues that prevent their happiness andimpede their growth and success. It can address various aspects of life, including interpersonal relationships, death, divorce, adoption, incest, rape, murder, illness and addiction, as well as organizational dilemmas.

BENEVOLENCE CAFEA QUIET RETREAT in the city offering: food that nourishes the body, company that nurtures the heart, conversation that stimulates the mind and an intangible essence that feeds the soul.
COOKING WITH A CONSCIENCE.Ethics in life is everything. It is a great understatement to say that trying to run an ethically green cafe in the middle of a city in the twenty-first century is a challenge. It is expensive and labor intensive, but we do it. We shun anything that is ready made.We buy our vegetables as fresh as we can, use organic when available, and prepare dishes from scratch. It's our way of putting love into our food.
