Reader JulieKnowles (a goodfriend of LINK ownerMoira Hesketh) con-tacted us recentlywith a really interest-ing story after herhusband Tony hadbeen working on ahouse in CraigsRoad, Tuebrook.

Julie takes up the story:“Tony was working onthe house and needed togo up to the loft where hefound a dusty old bag fullof someone’s preciousmemories. Having inves-

tigated further, theyclearly belong to anAngela Dalton (neeWilliams) and we’d loveto return Angela’s memo-ries to her.

There are 21st cardsand keys (including fromher parents andGrandad), old church andswimming certificates, a1968-9 school report (StMary’s School,Wavertree), a small wed-ding album, photos andother memories whichwill be precious to her”.

West Derby Evangelical Church hasbeen affectionately called “the pinkbuilding” by children in West Derby inrecent years but perhaps the communi-ty of West Derby knows little about itspast history and what happens in ittoday.

The building dates back to the late 1800’s.“Olive Hall” as it was called, built by Mr JohnHoughton of Sandfield Park for the LiverpoolTown Mission, was opened for Christian workin March 1873. It was originally called the

Christian Instruction Society; the organisationchanged its name to Liverpool Town Missionin 1837 and to Liverpool City Mission in1898. Its object was to “... promote the reli-gious improvement of the poor”. By 1930, theLiverpool City Mission had 33 church hallsacross Liverpool and Wirral.

John Houghton was a partner in the firm ofCanon, Miller, Houghton & Co, shipownersand merchants. Houghton, the son of a timbermerchant resident in Rodney Street, wasLiberal in politics and a Baptist by religion, and his later years, spent in retirement, wereoccupied with charitable and philanthropicwork.

In the late 1860s Alexander Balfour andStephen Williamson, partners in the Liverpoolshipowning firm of Balfour, Williamson &Co., became concerned at the numbers of des-titute and orphaned children in Liverpool.Balfour, along with John Houghton, heardAnnie MacPherson lecturing in London onher work with child emigration. Her sister,Louisa Birt, who assisted in her work, came toLiverpool to lecture about their work at a pub-lic meeting held in November 1872.

It was agreed that a society should be estab-lished in Liverpool to further this work, withthe fundraising and management of the hometo be kept separate from the London organisa-tion: The Liverpool Sheltering Homes Societywas thus established. John Houghton offeredthe free use of premises adjoining the oldByrom Hall Baptist Chapel in Byrom Street, which was formally opened in May 1873. Thepurpose of the Liverpool Sheltering Homeswas to rescue destitute children, train them inthe home, and accompany them to Canada. From Marchmont House in Ontario they wereplaced with families although they were super-

The work of theLiverpool CityMission still contin-ues today (www.liv-ercm.org.uk). In1958, however,‘Olive Hall’ was soldby them to a group oflocal Christians andan independentchurch was estab-lished. The churchwas then known asWest Derby Chapeland retained thisname until the 1990’swhen the name waschanged to WestDerby EvangelicalChurch (WDEC).The church is stillrun today by commit-ted local Christianswho volunteer theirtime and money toteach and live out theteachings of JesusChrist in a way that isrelevant to the peopleof all ages and back-

grounds who live inand around the area.

WDEC is a “fami-ly church” and con-tinues to have a par-ticular heart for thework with childrenand young peopleand, through prayer, trusts that God stillpositively changeslives today - just as inthe days of JohnHoughton.

The building is inneed of some refur-bishment and renew-al so watch this spaceto see what happensto the “pink build-ing!” For furtherdetails about the lifeof the church see:www.wdec.org.uk(History of OliveHall obtained fromNational Archives)

He had beenaway too long –far too long – andit was time heconfronted thedemons of thepast.

Anthony Black gotoff the train at LimeStreet. The bustlingstation was familiaryet unfamiliar, recognisable but sub-tly changed.

When he was lastthere, blackenedsteam trains belched

noisy plumes ofsmoke into the hugeexpanse of glass roof.Cars and taxis wentdirectly alongside theplatform to meetLondon services.

The buses were dif-ferent from the greenones he rememberedwith open platformsat the back.

Tony slumped inthe single-deckerremembering thatnight in December1965. He and some

There had been ahuge row at home.“Who said you couldgo?” his puritanicalfather bellowed.“You’re too young togo down there withthat mob at this timeof night.”

Tony thought hewas more than oldenough at 17 andstormed out on hiscrestfallen parentswithout saying a word.It was the last time hesaw them alive.

He shook himselfout of his reverie andgot off, making hisway along AllertonRoad. It was growingdusk and the sur-roundings were eeri-ly little changed in40 years.

There was thegate, once so proudlytended by his dad,now a mass of rust.He pushed it openand made his way

along the overgrowndrive. A minute laterhe stood outside theivy-covered ruin.Blackened, fire-scorched timbersstood out from thecrumbling walls likerotten teeth.

He had returnedfrom the concert to findfire engines in the drivewith officers dampingdown the smoulderingwreckage.

Tony was led by asympathetic police-man to a tarpaulinlying on the dampearth. He identifiedthe pathetic charredremains of his moth-er and father.

These painfulmemories racedthrough his mind ashe made his way tohis old friend’s housein Hunts Cross.

Reg poured him abrandy and theyspoke of the longyears when Tonylived in Singapore.

They representedvanished worlds, long dead days. Whoknows what whis-pered secrets theyhad witnessed?

Reg went to makea simple meal andTony amused himselflooking at the oldphones.

There was onethat took him backover a lifetime ofregrets. The squatblack Bakelitetelephone with itssilver dial wasidentical to thoseused by everyonein those dim, dis-tant days.

Tony picked up thereceiver and idlydialled his old num-

ber ALL 6548. Thespinning dial made asoft comforting purr.

He was shakenrigid to hear a ring-

ing tone and evenmore astoundedwhen it wasanswered almostinstantly.

He recognised thevoice immediatelyand muttered a hesi-tant Hello. It was his

long-dead motherwho almost shouteddown the phone:“Anthony, where

have you been?Come home thisinstant!”

George does have a deteri-orating eye condition thatisn’t causing him any prob-lems at the moment but hedoes need a special home.Once he is rehomed, his med-ical condition will be coveredby our Part Shared Adoption

Scheme, which means thatany costs for treatment relat-ing to this condition will bypaid for by Dogs Trust.

He doesn’t get on verywell with other dogs so needsto be the only pet in the homeand although he can live withchildren of 10 years andabove, he can be left for afew hours on his own as hereally does prefer company. He is brilliant with people, and copes amazingly wellwith his eye condition and isgenerally a very happy, boun-cy boy.

Another disap-pointing home

defeat with Croftagain giving silly

goals away at cru-cial times but theoverall perform-ance warrantedmore than theygot and on anoth-er day they mighteven have takenall three points.

The players nevergave up and pressedfor a goal right up tothe final whistle butone just had thefeeling it was fated

for them not toscore. ChrisMcGann hit the postafter a previous nearmiss and in similarvein a hard hit crosscame off a retreat-ing defenderstraight into thehands of the goal-keeper with fortunefavouring the visi-tors.

Although therewas plenty of goal-mouth incident it

was a case of sonear and yet so farand the Croft arefinding it hard ekeout a victory. Nextweek they faceSouth SeftonBorough at homewith a chance ofcompleting the dou-ble over them. Theywill be hoping forbetter luck andmore clinical finish-ing than in thismatch.

STONEYCROFTFC NEWSby Mick Titherington

Ford Motors 4 Stoneycroft 4

If it is excitement, drama and goalsyou want from afootball matchthen this one hadit all. In a gamethat exploded intolife with threegoals in the firstfive minutes spec-tators were afraidto blink in casethey missed any-thing.

S t o n e y c r o f topened the scoring inthe first minute whenBeckett put a preci-sion pass through forEddie Baker to slothome and show hehas lost of none ofhis goalscoringinstinct after a longlay-off throughinjury. Straight fromthe kick-off, athrough ball split theStoneycroft defenceand saw Fords netthe equaliser. Justthree minutes laterStoneycroft foundthemselves back infront with the irre-pressible Baker againon target.

The scoreline thenremained the samefor all of 28 minuteswhen that man Bakerpopped up to com-plete his hat-trickand give his team atwo-goal half-timecushion. As expect-ed, Fords started thesecond half livelyand determined butthe Stoneycroftdefence continued tolook secure. Tenminutes into the halfKinney replacedBeckett and with hisfirst touch hit ascreamer into the topcorner of the Fordnet with Croft nowseemingly in anunassailable lead.

However, thosewho followStoneycroft knownever to take any-

thing for granted andwithin a minute ofKinney’s goal thedefence failed toclose down a Fordplayer and his specu-lative shot wasdeflected into thenet. Soon after ‘Crofthearts sank as Fordswere awarded apenalty after Curriehad mistimed histackle. But the roller-coaster ride contin-ued when SimonBaker brought off aspectacular save todeny the haplessFord penalty taker.

Moments later thereferee awardedFords a secondpenalty, showing thered card to midfield-er Mark Calland forwhat he laterexplained was fouland abusive lan-guage. Fords madeno mistake this timeand the scene was setfor a breathtakingfinale. Stoneycroft’sten men were res-olute in defendingtheir lead but withonly minutes to goBaker producedanother fine saveonly to see it reboundto a Ford attackerwho slotted home toearn his side a draw.

Even then with thelast kick of the gamea Stoneycroft freekick was blastedover. What a game!Although deflatedhaving lost such alead, manager JohnLeary was full ofpraise for his side:“There were lots ofgood performancestoday. We playedgood football andtook our chances andstill have things towork on but with thisspirit and level ofcommitment I knowwe can do it”.
