It was 4 February 1893 and burly, bearded Lord Salisbury (1830-1903) was in the city to launch the world’s first overhead electric railway. The Tory leader and political titan had already served two terms as Prime Minister between 1885 and 1892. He was now briefly in opposition – with Liverpudlian Liberal William Gladstone in power. Following the ceremony, fin- ishing touches were carried out on the line and the Overhead opened to the public on 6 March. It was an instant hit and was dubbed the Dockers’ Umbrella because of the shelter it provided along the full length of the docks. The Overhead was inspired by the elevated steam railway in New York. An Act of OVERHEAD OPENING Parliament in 1882 gave the green light to the Liverpool line and work began in 1889. The initial £466,000 system was cheaper than one with steam trains, as originally planned. The Overhead was built from wrought- iron girders mostly in 50 ft spans standing 16 ft above the road- way. It connected Seaforth to Dingle – the southern section was completed in 1896, including an 800 yard tunnel. Eventually the sys- tem was extended to Aintree The Overhead was powered by six steam engines (pic- tured) in a generating station near the cen- tre of the line. They were powered by 30 ft long Lancashire boilers providing steam at a pressure of 120 pounds per square inch. The Musgrave horizontal compound condensing engines ran at 100 rpm gener- ating 500 amperes at 500 volts. A boiler, super- heater and condens- ing plant and other additions were added as services increased. New trains were introduced in 1902 which reduced travel times. Originally the entire length of the Overhead was cov- ered in 32 minutes, including 16 stops - an average speed of just over 12 mph. The improved equipment upped this to nearly 19 mph largely due to the new faster trains weighing 55 tons when loaded with 154 passengers. The Overhead pro- vided a grandstand view of Liverpool’s bustling docks and warehouses - and lifelong memories for those who trav- elled on it. • See the only sur- viving Overhead Railway carriage at the new Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free. by Stephen Guy

WEST DERBYFARMERS MARKET

CELEBRATINGANCIENT MIDSUMMER

WITH A MODERNSPIRIT

by Teresa Gestwa

According to a Polish Midsummer cel-ebration ritual, if the floating wreath isfound in the river by a fitting mate thewreath maker will marry very soon, otherwise she shall wait for the next 12months.

Even though this practice may not be anaccurate marriage prediction in the modernworld, it did not stop over 300 people fromenjoying traditional Polish wreath makingrecently in the World Museum Liverpool, ini-tiated by Merseyside Polonia.

As soon as the door of the WestonDiscovery Centre was open to the public theroom was full of people interested in thisunique Polish custom. The Midsummer Nightis a magic time of the year rejoiced by theancient Slavs as a celebration of fire andwater. One of the rituals that accompanied itwas making and floating flower garlandsdown the river. Rather than believing in thispagan tradition Merseyside Polonia preferredto enjoy this Polish ritual by turning it into acommunity gathering and a great opportunityto try out visitors’ artistic skills.

This successful event saw many happyfaces in the World Museum who were eager tocelebrate Polish culture. Wreath making was abit of a challenge for some but one to evoke agreat sense of achievement. Take a look at theimpressive cress paper flower crowns docu-mented on many photos available on the char-ity’s Facebook page.

As an organisation fostering good relation-ships between the local community and Polishpeople, Merseyside Polonia offers an array ofcultural events throughout the year. If youwish to find out more visit MerseysidePolonia on Facebook or sign up for an eventalert by sending an email [email protected].

How Did your Ancestors Live aHundred Years Ago?

Local author Kenny O’Connell becameinterested in researching family history andafter then reading “The Gangs of Liverpool”(a history of Liverpool’s Victorian streetgangs written by Michael Macilwee) hedecided to a write a novel based on the sub-ject.

By using the comparisons between the 2011and the 1911 census years he came up with astory that is told through the eyes of a hoodiewho is sent back in time to 1911. The Hoodiegoes on a life-changing journey into the past;he witnesses poverty, injustice and the brutal-ity of the 1911 riots. The hunter then becomesthe hunted as he becomes a victim of the noto-rious High Rip Gang, who terrorisedLiverpool.

What they said about “The Hoodie and theHigh Rip Gang”:

• Doctor Michael Macilwee (author)…

“A stirring tale of gang warfare, love andredemption in the Liverpool slums”

• Andrew Schofield (actor)...

“Every now and then another great storyabout Liverpool comes along and I believethis to be one of them”

THE HOODIE ANDTHE HIGH RIP GANG

• Dave Kirby (playwright)...“This is a great book that incorporates a lot offactual events, blending them in with fiction. Ilove the idea of a hoodie being sent back intime and learning some hardlessons from the past”

The book is on sale at Waterstones (BoldStreet and Liverpool One),

Bruno is a handsome and friendlyeight year old Black and Grey CockerSpaniel at Dogs Trust Merseyside.

before market day. Mary told us “I think themarket is great, bringing both locals and peo-ple from outside West Derby to the village. Ithelps to bring the community together andmake a difference. I was delighted with thesupport for the market, it all went very welland it can only get better. It was great to havethe animals there and maybe there’ll be a fewmore next time”.

“Future Market dates are first Saturday ofeach month, next one 4th August” continuedMary “With all the lows in the current mediait does show a brighter side of West Derby andalso shows that the surrounding areas have alot to offer with the likes of Croxteth ParkHeritage Society promoting Croxteth Park

Hall which we are very luckyto have on our doorstep.

Everyone in the area gotinvolved, including the churchwho had a car boot sale withfree coffee, and we at TheSefton offered up a mega-breakfast for just £4, tea and

coffee included - great value. We’ve had nothing but posi-tive reactions from allinvolved and I was reallypleased to see The LINKthere”.

JOSEPH HUMPREY from

West Derby pictured enjoyinghis ice cream, mum Heathertook her two boys along to themarket and she told us howmuch she liked the market andthought it was really good forthe community.

PREPARATIONS FOR THEPREM BEGIN FOR THE CROFT

by Mick TitheringtonStoneycroft players reported back

for training at the beginning of July asthey prepare for the forthcoming 2012-13 campaign in the LCPL Premierdivision.

The good news is that all of the squad thatwon promotion have indicated they will bestaying at the club and either have or will besigning forms in the near future. ManagerJohn Leary oversaw a testing first sessionwhich the players not so much enjoyed butendured with good humour and high spirits.John was delighted to see Steve Dowd back infull training and heartened by the news thatCarl Donohue is set to return and Eddie Bakerhas been given the OK to start running withthe hope he will be back in action aroundOctober. All the other players have reportedback with fit to play clearance.

Pre-season friendlies, which because ofground availability will all have to be playedaway, include the annual fixture with Airbus,in the Bryan Jones Memorial Cup, SouthLiverpool and Waterloo GSOB leading up tothe first Premier League game on 18thAugust.

A number of players received awards whichwere presented at a social evening arranged tocelebrate the season’s success. Recipientsincluded Liam Currie, Player of the Year; PaulFinnegan, Players’ Player of the Year; JonBowers, Supporters’ Player of the Year andSam Kershaw, Young Player of the Year (allpictured at the event). Congratulations go toall of them.

The club will be running a Veterans sidethis year and they will compete in the IZingari Combination Veterans Division.Chairman Kenny Morrison welcomed thismove and said “We are pleased with thisdevelopment as we are anxious to extend ourinvolvement with the community and widenour support. The expense of running a side inthe Premier League is considerably increasedand we are hopeful that we can gather supportfrom local businesses or individuals to adver-tise in our programme and/or sponsor games”.
