Dear Parents and Friends,
It has been a busy past week with tree planting and construction of our Early Childhood building. This past week the delivery of a crane of great height and the framing of the Early Childhood building has been put in place. Also, throughout this past week, Buddy classes from Primary and High School went out in the community to plant trees. Organisers comment how grateful they are to have the children help in this worthy activity. All families are invited to attend the professional performance by Third Wheel Collective of “The Passing of Arthur” By Lord Tennyson this Wednesday, 8 August at 7pm in the LAC. Appropriate for children 10 years old and up. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to see Shakespeare come alive. Please see Note from MBWS Board Member, Richard Symonds later in this newsletter seeking nominations for an Interim Chair for PSPG by 10 August to help us facilitate the review of the mandate and reinvigorate this very important working group.

We need your help!2019 is an exciting year on the MBWS calendar - not only will Waldorf education mark its centenary globally with Waldorf100, we open our brand new Kindergarten and Innovation Resource Centre and also celebrate our own 40th anniversary year! A MBWS40/100 committee will plan a timetable of events to facilitate community connection, build pride in our achievements and most importantly celebrate all we have accomplished at MBWS - and all that we strive for into the future. We are seeking community members - staff, parents, alumni, grandparents - with skills or interest in event planning, fundraising and/or marketing, to nominate to join the committee and devise, plan and implement a series of celebratory events. If you would like to receive a copy of the Committee’s Terms of Reference and/ or nominate to join me in making 2019 a year we will all remember, please email [email protected]

Name the KindergartensIn 2018, we will open two new Kindergartens. This will bring to fruition a long held vision to welcome children younger than previously possible, and allow more time at kindergarten for others. As we will have 2 new kindergartens in our garden we are considering what to name them, and would like your ideas. If you have an idea for the name of our 2 new buildings could you please send them to me, with a brief picture of why you would choose that name? [email protected] We have also been receiving some donations for the kindergartens. If you have any beautiful and robust Waldorf toys, furniture or materials that are surplus to requirement we would be very happy to give them a new lease of life in the kindergartens. Please bring your donations to the School Office.Thank you for your consideration and participation. We joyfully anticipate the richness this will bring to our school.

Health & Wellbeing
Whooping CoughThere has been several cases of Pertussis (whooping cough) with some students and a staff member. This illness often begins with cold-like symptoms of runny nose, sore watery red eyes, low-grade fever and general unwellness, although these symptoms are not present in all people. After three to seven days, a dry cough develops. The cough is usually present for many weeks and may last for months. Classically a prolonged fit of coughing occurs. The coughing is immediately followed by a deep breath in, resulting in the typical whoop - hence the name ‘whooping cough’. Some people do not whoop, but coughing may be followed by vomiting.Pertussis is highly infectious when the ‘cold-like’ symptoms occur in the early stages. Without treatment a person is infectious for the first three weeks of coughing. If treated with antibiotics the person is no longer infectious to others five days after starting antibiotics. If you suspect you may have Whooping Cough seek advice and confirmation from a medical professional.

Dear Nightingale Parents,It is lovely to be back in the rhythms of kindergarten life after our winter break. During our first Wednesday spent in our garden we found a little possum high up in one of the trees snug and warm in a nesting box. On our morning walks we have been keeping an eye on what the workmen have been up to and what pleasure sweeps over the children as they observe what machinery is being used for what task. There has been glimpses of Spring around us and the yellow wattle is out in all its glory but the cold is still with us. Please ensure your child still has their rain gear and warm hats at kindergarten. Dates for this term to be aware of areGardening Morning 8.50 -12.30pm Wednesday the 15th of August in our kindergarten garden.Kindergarten Spring Festival Thursday the 20th of September, half day for all children.Dolls week beginning Monday the 24th of September.

As part of their farming study, Class 3 has decided to become worm farmers.Class 3 return half of the worms back into the school garden and then replace with soil to breed more worms.
SAPOL Road Safety AwarenessOn Wednesday Helen and Rob from SAPOL visited the school to address the Class 10 students on Crash Scene Investigations and Road Safety. The emphasis was on the importance of driver focus and concentration behind the wheel of a car, the type of car you drive and how easily distractions (e.g. mobile phones, peers) can have devastating results. The students were shown many images of car crash scenes and animated re-enactments of the crashes. In some cases the cars were in pieces and unrecognisable, and some crashes ended up with fatalities. Rob spoke about the differences the type of car you drive can have an effect on your chances of survival in a car crash. As many of the Class 10 students are now learning to drive and are saving up for their own cars, Rob highly recommended they check the ANCAP safety star rating (ancap.com.au) to compare cars. ANCAP recommend a minimum 4 or 5 star rating to increase your survival in a car crash.
Some of the students who are on their learners’ permits were able to use the car simulator to experience the distraction a mobile phone can cause when driving. Current statistics in Australia show that car accidents caused by mobile phone distraction are rising substantially, especially in the younger age bracket, and they are all totally avoidable.

The climbing / bouldering wall is now completed and it will be integrated into future PE lessons.Thank you to Nick Board for his tireless efforts on this project
In Class 11/12 PE students are currently participating in GAIT’s (Group Adventure Initiative Tasks) as part of their Group Dynamics and Sports Psychology topic. The idea of the GAIT’s is to promote team work and develop confidence in a team environment, this task was the Multi Stage Crossing which is 1 of 6 different GAITs for the term.

Every year around 1.5 million bikes are sold across Australia – around half of these will end up unused or abandoned.Bicycles for Humanity is a non-profit charity that gives bikes to people who need them. They are transported to some the poorest regions in the world. Each of the forty-foot shipping containers that Bicycles for Humanity sends becomes a bike workshop providing employment, skills, training and business opportunities.Daryl and I have started working to repair a bike and we would like to donate the bike to Bicycles for Humanity.
Yet again we had our Class 6/7 orchestra combined concert with Trinity Gardens Steiner Stream. This day always stands out as a big Waldorf family get together celebrated by making music. The most popular comment about the day was ‘Awesome’. Yes it was! We look forward to visiting their school next year for our next concert.

Community Sing!
The involvement of parents in the life of the School is critical to building a strong school community. The Parent School Partnership Group (PSPG) has been central to parent involvement having conducted projects and activities to benefit the School. While the PSPG has achieved much, with a clear role and structure it can achieve much more. Last year the Board identified several risks with the current operation of the PSPG and gave notice that to mitigate these risks, the PSPG will need to become a formal committee of the School. By having its own mandate, the PSPG will have a clear role and purpose with the authority to conduct activities and projects in partnership with the School. Having a structure for meetings and office bearers to share the workload will mean that the PSPG can continue to flourish and assist the School achieve its goals within the new Strategic Plan. The people best placed to come up with a structure for the PSPG and to agree to its role and purpose are you, the parents and supporters of the School. To this end the Board is seeking an interim Facilitator to guide the process for developing the new PSPG mandate. The interim Facilitator will have responsibility for calling and running a meeting of interested parents and supporters with the School Executive to work through
the many issues involved in writing a formal operating mandate for the PSPG. The Board Secretary, Don Frakes and I have agreed to assist the interim Facilitator in preparing and circulating an issues paper to help guide discussion. This paper will also outline the risks identified by the Board. The only responsibility for the interim Facilitator will be to develop a draft PSPG mandate for consideration by the Board. There will be no expectation that this person will continue in the Facilitator role once the reformed PSPG is in place. We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from anyone in the School community to undertake the interim Facilitator role. If you have a passion for parent involvement, are a good organiser and a clear thinker with committee experience, then please consider putting your name forward. To apply, please send an expression of interest of no more than a page, stating your relevant skills and experience to the Business Manager, Mark Lucas in the office by close of business, Friday, 10 August. If you would like to discuss this role before putting in your application, I would be happy to talk to you. Please call or text me on 0401 123 014.

OPENING THE EYE OF THE IMAGINATION
A Goethean artistic/scientific study of the forms of nature becomes an apprenticeship for understanding social phenomena, in particular the threefold social order as conceived by Rudolf Steiner. The focus is on polarity, intensification and metamorphosis understood through the faculty of exact imagination.
This course is comprised of three units: Nature, Society and Self (the evolution of consciousness). It is designed to take a minimum of30 weeks to complete and is self-assessed. Group study is encouraged.

Workshops
SOCIAL UNDERSTANDING, GENDER AND SEXUALITY These lectures help to recognise the relevant depth and progression anthroposophy brings to this important aspect of life and the responsibility of community in raising children and working together to promote individual wellbeing.
We look at how and when we work with children and adolescents to bring the understanding of sexuality and gender in relation to where they are in their consciousness. This brings harmony between the evolving body and inner experiences that sets the ground for healthy adult experience.
The talk will cover the themes of the content brought to the students and some of the main issues confronting child health and wellbeing in current times, with examples of how we can counter the unbalancing effects. We also address how to understand gender differences and similarities that both limit or free us and the contribution and struggles of the changing social structures around gender and sexuality affecting us all.
