Initialy when I started this table it was my intention to only list V engines but I have now decided to include U type engines, W type engines, X type engines and Y type enginesas these are often quoted in books on V engines.
29-6-2008 Denis Basson E & O E
A U engine is a piston engine made up of two separate straight engines (complete with separate crankshafts) joined by gears or chains. Viewed along the crankshaft axis it resembles the letter U. With the eye of faith! For this type of engine to be classed as a U it has to have the two crankshafts usually mounted on one crankcaseThe design is also sometimes desribed as a twin bank or double bank enginealthough these terms are sometimes used to describe a V engine
A V engine, or Vee engine is a common configuration for an internal combustion engine. The cylinders and pistons are aligned, in two separate planes or 'banks', so that they appear to be in a "V" when viewed along the axis of the crankshaft The Vee configuration generally reduces the overall engine length, height and weight compared to an equivalent inline configuration.
The W engine is an engine configuration in which the cylinder banks resemble the letter W in the same way a Vengine resembles the letter V. There have been three entirely different implementations of this concept: one with three banks of cylinders, one with four banks, and one with two banks of cylinders and two crankshafts.

An X engine is a piston engine comprising twinned V-block engines opposed to each other. Thus, the cylinders are arranged in four banks, driving a common crankshaft.Viewed along the axis of the crankshaft, this would appear as an X. X engines were often coupled engines derived from existing powerplants. This configuration is extremely uncommon, primarily due to its weight and complexity as compared to a radial engine. However, it was more compact (per number of cylinders) than a V-engine
A Y engine is like the letter Y sometimes inverted it is not very common and few have been made one that I knowof is a two stroke with the combustion space where the three pistons come together one leg is the inlet and theother two are exhaust

Initialy when I started this table it was my intention to only listV engines but I have now decided to include U type engines, W type engines, X type engines and Y type engines as these are often quoted in books on V engines. 29-6-2008 Denis Basson E & O E
A U engine is a piston engine made up of two separate straight engines (complete with separate crankshafts) joined by gears or chains. The design is also sometimes desribed as a twin bank or double bank enginealthough these terms are sometimes used to describe a V engine
A V engine, or Vee engine is a common configuration for an internal combustion engine. The cylinders and pistons are aligned, in two separate planes or 'banks', so that they appear to be in a "V" when viewed along the axis of the crankshaft. The Vee configuration generally reduces the overall engine length, height and weight compared to an equivalent inline configuration.
The W engine is an engine configuration in which the cylinder banks resemble the letter W in the same way a V engine resembles the letter V.
