INSTRUCTION FOR LIONEL LITTLE LINES THE POLAR EXPRESS SET

All Lionel Little Lines Engines have an Automatic Power Shut Off to conserve batteries. If the Controller is not used for five minutes the engine will go into the POWER OFF MODE. Press the Smoke Stack on the engine to restart. The POWER ON MODE in the Engine is indicated by the head lamp being illuminated.

Battery installation (Requires Adult Installation)• Requires six AAA ALKALINE (RL03) batteries (not included) and a small Phillips screwdriver (not

included).

• Three batteries are used for the Controller, and three are used for the Engine.

• Do not mix new and old batteries together.

• Lionel recommends using only Alkaline batteries for best performance .

• Never mix battery brand or types.

• Remove batteries if the toy is not to be used for an extended period.

Battery installation - Engine (Requires Adult Installation)

To open battery door, loosen the two screws in the back of the engine cab with a Phillips screw driver.

Note: the screws will remain attached to the door after loosened. Open the battery door as shown and insert three AAA (LR03) ALKALINE batteries.

The Positive (+) and Negative (-) signs beneath the holes for the batteries indicate the end of the battery you should see when in place. You should see the Positive end of the top battery and the Negative end of the lower two.

After inserting the batteries close the door and tighten the screws. Be sure the screws are tightened snuggly to insure the good contact with the battery terminals (take care not to overtighten).

Battery installation - Controller (Requires Adult Installation)

To open battery door loosen the screw on the bottom of the controller with a Phillips screw driver. Lift battery door by tab near screw. Note: the screw will remain attached to the battery door after

loosened. Insert three AAA (LRO3) ALKALINE batteries positioned as shown in the back of the com-partment. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw to secure (take care not to overtighten).

The switch at the bottom of the battery box allow the parent to turn off the sound features on this product. It is automatically preset to the Sounds On position. To turn the controller sounds off slide the switch to the alternate position). Sounds can be re-activated at any time by moving this switch back to the original Factory preset position.

One-time assembly of upper and lower ramp track sections

THIS IS A ONE-TIME ASSEMBLY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SEPARATE THESE PARTS IN THE FUTURE.

Align the Upper Ramp and Lower Ramp section together as shown. Press together firmly until they snap together. Ramp tracks are used to transition your train from the ground to a second level support by a Stone Arch.

Assembling track sections

Align the ends of the track and press firmly until they snap together.

Disassembling track sections

Hold track in both hands bending the joint downwards until the track snaps apart.

Stone arches

Stone Arches are used to support elevated sections of track. Place a Stone Arch under each joint section between the tracks and snap track into place as shown.

Stone Arches can also be stacked to create bridges or multiple levels of track. To stack the arches simply place the base of an arch over the top of another arch to snap into place

To separate arches simple bend them at the joint to snap apart

Suspension and girder bridge sections

To create bridges, snap the suspension or girder bridges section onto the top of the arches as shown.

You must use a ‘9 INCH TRACK’ between the Brick Arches when using bridge sections.Note!

Train operation

1. Push down.

2. Slide together.

Press down the Smoke Stack to turn power on in the engine. The light on the front of the train will turn on to indicate POWER ON MODE. The engine is now ready to use. If the engine is not

used for 5 min the engine will shut itself off to conserve batteries. The front light will turn off to indi-cate the POWER OFF MODE. To use the engine just press the smoke stack again turn POWER ON.

Installing the battery in your controller

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, loosen the screw on the bottom of the controller. Note: the screws will remain

attached to the door after loosened. The Positive (+) and Negative (-) signs beneath the holes for the batteries indicate the end of the battery you should see when in place. Insert three AAA (LR03) ALKALINE batteries and replace the screw to secure the door in place.

Check Polarity!

IR Controller operation

Holding the controller as shown aiming it directly at the engine. Be sure there are no physical obstructions between the controller and the engine such as a bridge or brick arch.

Push the control lever forward to start the train moving FORWARD and start the running sounds. Push the lever forward again to the FAST FORWARD position to run even faster.

Pull the control lever backwards slightly to the STOP position bring the train to a stop.

Pull the lever all the way to the back to move the train in REVERSE and start running sounds. From REVERSE, the lever will automatically return to the STOP position when the lever is released.

Sound button

Press the WHISTLE BUTTON while the train is not moving for an "All aboard!" announcement. Press the WHISTLE BUTTON while the train is in FORWARD or REVERSE to hear the train

whistle.

To turn all sound off

To disable all sounds, open the battery compartment on the Controller and slide the Sound Switch toward the front of the controller. The Sound Switch is set at the factory to the ON position.

Sliding this switch to the OFF position will disable all train sounds including those made when the sound button is pressed. To restore the sounds, just slide the switch back to the original ON position.

Troubleshooting:

Trainwillnotrun:

• If the train controller is not used for more than 5 minutes the train will power down to conserve batteries. Press the smoke stack to activate the POWER ON MODE. Check if headlamp on front of train lights ups after button is pressed. If headlamp does not light up change batteries in engine.

• Be sure there are no physical obstructions between the controller and the sensor on top of the engine.

• Direct sunlight can interfere with the operation of any IR controller. Move the train and controller out of direct sunlight.

• Check to be sure the batteries are orientated properly. In the engine this means you should see the + side of on the top battery and the - side of the bottom two batteries. In the controller check to see if they are oriented as shown in the diagrams molded into the bottom of the battery compartments.

• Be sure the screws on the engines battery door are closed snuggly. The battery door must be fully closed for the battery contacts to be properly engaged.

• Put NEW batteries in the engine

• Put NEW batteries in the controller.

Lionel Limited Warranty Policy & Service

This Lionel product, including all mechanical and electrical components, moving parts, motors and structural components, with the exception of LIGHT BULBS, LED’s & TRACTION TIRES are warranted to the original owner-purchaser for a period of

one year from the original date of purchase against original defects in materials or workmanship when purchased through a Lionel Authorized Retailer*.

This warranty does NOT cover the following:

• Normal wear and tear• Light bulbs or LED’s• Defects appearing in the course of commercial use• Damage resulting from abuse/misuse of the product

Transfer of this product by the original owner-purchaser to another person voids this warranty in its entirety. Modification of this product in any way; visually mechanically or electronically, voids the warranty in its entirety.

Any warranted product which is defective in original materials or workmanship and is delivered by the original owner-purchaser (this warranty is non-transferrable) to Lionel LLC or any Lionel Authorized Service Station MUST be accompanied by the original receipt for purchase (or copy) from an Authorized Lionel Retailer*, will at the discretion of Lionel LLC, be repaired or replaced, without charge for parts or labor. In the event the defective product cannot be repaired, and a suitable replacement is not available, Lionel will offer to replace the product with a comparable model (determined by Lionel LLC), if available. In the event a comparable model is not available the customer will be refunded the original purchase price (requires proof of purchase from the Authorized Lionel Retailer* it was originally purchased). Any products on which warranty service is sought must be sent freight or postage prepaid (Lionel will refuse any package when postage is due). Transportation and shipping charges are not covered as part of this warranty.

NOTE: Products that require service that do not have a receipt from an LIONEL AUTHORIZED RETAILER* will be required to pay for all parts required to repair the product (labor will not incur a charge) providing the product is not older than 3 years from date of manufacture and is within 1 year from date of purchase. A copy of the original sales receipt is required.

In no event shall Lionel LLC be held liable for incidental or consequential damages.Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not

apply to you.This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.

Instructions for Obtaining ServiceIf service for this Lionel LLC product is required; bring the item, along with your DATED sales receipt and completed warranty

information (at the bottom of this page) to the nearest Lionel Authorized Service Station. Your nearest Lionel Service Station can be found by calling 1-800-4-LIONEL or by accessing the website at www.lionel.com.

If you prefer to send your Lionel product directly to Lionel, for repair you must FIRST call 586-949-4100 extension 9105 or FAX Lionel at 586-949-5429 or write to Customer Service, 26750 Twenty Three Mile Road, Chesterfield, MI 48051-2493. Please have the 6-digit Lionel product number, the date of original purchase, the dealer where the item was purchased and what seems to be the problem. You will receive a return authorization (RA) number to ensure your merchandise will be properly tracked and handled upon receipt at Lionel LLC.

Once you have your Return Authorization (RA) number, make sure the item is packed in its original Styrofoam inner container which is placed inside the original outer display box (this will help prevent damage during shipping and handling). This shipment MUST be prepaid and we recommend that it be insured with the carrier of your choice.

Please make sure you have followed all of the above instructions carefully before returning any merchandise for service. You may choose to have your product repaired by one of Lionel LLC’s Authorized Service Stations after its warranty has expired. A reasonable service fee should be expected once the product warranty has expired.
