OurlangauagesupportisofferedthroughourEnglishasanAdditionalLanguage(EAL)program.LCSacceptsstudentswithvariousEnglishlanguageabilitiesthough“beginning”EALstudentsareacceptedupthroughGrade6.Ittakesupto6yearstodevelophighfunctioningaca-demiclanguagecapacityforbeginningELLs(EnglishLanguageLearn-ers).Therefore,itisnotinthechild’sbestinteresttobeginstudyinginEnglishstartingfromGrade7andbeyond.Accessingthecurriculumcanbecomeanexcessiveanddetrimentalchallenge.

TheSecondarySchoolemploystwoschoolcounselors.OurcollegecounselorworksprimarilywithstudentsinGrade11and12.Individualandgroupsupportanddirectionisprovidedfortheimportantcollegesearchprocess.OurothercounselorworksprimarilywithGrades6-10.Thiscounselorprovidessupportforstudentsdealingwitharangeofissuesfromsocialandfriendshiptoacademictochallengingbehavioralissues.Inaddition,thecounselorprovidesin-classsupportforvariousgradelevelswhereneeded.
Studentsandparentsshouldutilizeourcounselingserviceswhenneeded.
DISCIPLINECODEThechiefaimoftheDisciplinaryCodeistoclearlyarticulateacceptablestandardsofbehavior in theSecondarySchoolofLCSso thatparentsandstudentsalikeknow,and thereforecanaccept, the responsibilitiesofbeingamemberoftheschoolcommunity.Thecodealsodefinesthedisciplinaryconsequencesofastudent’sfailuretoadheretotheschool’scodeofconduct.Itishopedthatthecodewillencouragepositivebehav-iorandnotbeviewedsimplyasalistofprohibitedacts.
IfthereisanallegedviolationoftheDisciplinaryCode,teachersandad-ministratorswillmakereasonableeffortstotreatthematterconfidentially.Staff members will only disclose information to those directly involvedand/or thosewhoneed tobeadvised toenforcedisciplinarymeasuresand/or to prevent future violations. Confidentiality will ensure that thestudentisencouragedtoimprovehis/herbehaviorandisnotsubjecttopublicridicule.
Schoolauthoritieshavetherighttointervenewithconsequencesforanybehaviorthatintheirjudgmentimpairsapositiveschoolclimateandanoptimumlearningenvironment.Consequencesnormallyfall intothefol-lowingcategories:
a. Teacherapplieddisciplineb. Writtenessaysreflectingontheeventc. Verbalorwrittenapologiesd. ‘LunchDetention’orotherrestrictionse. Assignedafterschooldetentionforoneormultipledaysf. requiredtobecompleted-nolossofcrediti. Outofschoolsuspension—removalfromschoolforasetperiodof
timewithlossofgrades(i.e.,‘zeros’)duringthattimej. RecommendationforExpulsion—removalfromschoolpermanently
Studentsnormallyreceivealettertotakehometoparentswhenasignifi-cantdisciplinaryconsequenceisassigned. It isthestudent’srespon-sibilitytogivetheparenttheletterandexplaintheconsequence.Lackofparental receiptof the letterdoesnot removeresponsibility fromthestudent to complywith the consequence. CATEGORYI:Disrespect/InsubordinationRESPECT:Toshowacceptance,regard,andcourtesytowardothersir-respectiveofbackground,includingrace,religion,nationality,gender,ageandpersonalcircumstance.
DISRESPECT/INSUBORDINATION: To engage in behavior that doesnotconstituterespectfulconduct.Disrespectful behavior includes cursing, swearing or the use of vulgarlanguageorgestures;failuretoobeydirectionofstaff;actsorwordscal-culated to exhibit disdain, engender hatred, or a lack of regard of therightsorfeelingsofothersortheauthorityofstaff;lackofsportsmanship;and/orinappropriatehandlingortreatmentofthepropertyofanotherorthatoftheSchool.Upontheoccurrenceofanyactofdisrespectorinsubordination,thestu-dentshallgiveasincereapologyandthefollowingactionshouldbetaken.
1stOccurrence:1. Teacher and student discuss, in private, the student’s behavior,
emphasizingthedifferencebetweenacceptablebehaviorandunac-ceptablebehaviororlanguage.Parent(s)notified.
2. Studentshallwriteashortessay,accordingtoteacher’sinstructions,andsubmittheessaytotheteacher;and
3. Studentwarnedoftheconsequencesofrepeatedbehavior.
SubsequentOccurrences:Dependingonthenumberandseverityoftheoffense(s),oneorallofthefollowingmeasurescanbetaken:
1. If the student’s offending behavior stems fromsocial and/or emo-tional issues, the studentwill be referred to theSchoolGuidanceCounselorconcerningtheoffendingbehavior.Parent(s)notified.
2. Theprivilege(s)ofparticipatinginextracurricularactivities,classorgroup trips,specialevents (suchasdances, talentshows,etc.) isdeniedforaspecificperiodoftime.
3. Parent/Student/Teacher/PrincipalConference.4. In-schooland/oroutofschoolSuspensionand/orExpulsion.
CATEGORYII:InappropriateShowofAffectionWhilestudentsmayexpressaffectionbyhuggingorkissingfriendsupongreeting,studentsmust recognize thatcertainexpressionsofaffection,particularly of a romantic or sexual nature, are inappropriate while atSchoolorduringSchoolactivities.Studentsarerequiredtorefrainfromromantickissing,fondling,petting,and/orsexual/sexualizedcontact.
1stOccurrence:1. Staff member and students discuss the behavior, noting why the
seenbehaviorwasunacceptable.Thismeetingtobedocumented.Parent(s)notified.

Principal.Theeventwillbeinvestigated.Parentcontactmadefol-lowedbyameetingwiththePrincipal.
2. Studentwillformallyapologizetothepersonwhowasabused.3. Iffirstoffenseisofaseriousnature,afterschooldetentionsorsus-
pensionmaybeappliedatthediscretionofthePrincipal.
2ndOccurrence:ArepeatofthisbehaviormayresultinanextendedSuspensionorExpulsionatthediscretionofthePrincipal.
CATEGORYIV:DishonestyPleaserefertotheLCSHonorCode.Dishonestyincludesacademicdis-honesty,cheating,copying,permittingotherstocopyyourwork,andpla-giarismto includecomputer-basedplagiarism(i.e., ‘cuttingandpasting’otherswork intoastudent’sacademicproductwithoutfullcitation), fail-ingtocitereferencesinacademicwork,andlyinginresponsetoastaffmemberinquiry.Dishonestyduringthecourseofaninvestigationofanydisciplinaryoffenseisitselfanoffense.

cipalandSecurityCoordinator. Principal investigatesthe incident,andfollowsLCStheftprotocol.Parent(s)notified.
2. Student warned of consequences of repeated behavior. Studentwritesanessay,tobesignedbyparent,ontheinappropriatenessofsuchbehaviorandwhathe/sheintendstodotorectifyit.
3. Restitutionmustbemadetotheschoolortheindividual.4. Suspensionfromschool-dependinguponseverity.

ACTIVITIESandELIGIBILITYStudentsinvolvedinactivitiesofferedatLincolnarerecognizedasofficialrepresentativesoftheschool.Theirconduct,behavior,andsportsman-shiponandofftheschoolpremisesshouldexemplifythehighestpossiblestandards.Studentsmustattendschoolforthefulldaytobeeligibletoattendorparticipateinanyextracurricularevent(ofanysort)onthatday.

Ifastudentisabsentforanyreason,heorshemustbringawrittenex-cusetothePrincipal’sOfficethenextday.ThatexcusewillbereviewedinthePrincipal’sOfficetodetermineiftheabsenceisanexcusedorun-excusedabsence.Studentswillbeprovidedare-admittanceformtoshow

In the event of a planned absence during the academic year, parentsareasked torequestpermission inadvance fromthePrincipal. APre-ArrangedAbsence form is available in the Principal’s Office. While astudent’s teacherswillmake every effort to indicatewhat workwill becoveredduringtheperiodofabsence,itisthestudent’sresponsibility(nottheteacher’s)tomakeupthisworkina‘reasonableperiodoftime.’
AbsencesandSemesterIandFinalEXAMINATIONS-LCSdoesnotofferearlyormakeupexaminationsforstudentsleavingschoolearlyfortravelorothernon-emergencyreasons.EarlyexamsmaybeadministeredifafamilyisleavingLCSpermanently.Intheeventofanearlydeparturestudentswillreceiveamarkof“incom-plete”forthatmarkingperiod.Examsmustbemadeupduringthefirstweekuponreturn in the followingmarkingperiod. TARDIES(arrivinglatetoclassorschool)
TardypolicyfordailyarrivaltoschoolStudentsareexpectedtoarrivetoschoolontime.Therecommendedarrivaltimeisnolaterthan7:45am.Ifastudentislatetoschoolforalegitimatereason,theyneedtopresentanotetothesecondaryschoolofficewithin24hours.Aphonecallfromaparentindicatingthereasonforthetardyissufficient.Ifstudentsarelatetoschool,theyareassignedalunchstudyhall.Ittheschoolreceivesnoinformation,thetardywillbeconsideredunexcused.Beyond5tardiespersemesterwillresultinaparentconferenceandadditionalconsequences.
Balanced Communicators & Knowledgeable, Informed Students
ATTENDANCETheschool’sinstructionalprogramisbasedontheassumptionthatstu-dentswillattendschoolregularly.DailyclassattendanceisaconditionforfulfillinghighschoolcreditandIBrequirements,completingcoursework,andgeneralacademicprogressattheschool.Anyabsence,whetherex-cusedorunexcused,detractsfromastudent’sdepthofunderstandingofthemissedsubjectandisrecorded.
ByBoardpolicy,inordertomeetLincolnCommunitySchool’sattendancerequirements,studentsmaynotbeabsentfromclassmorethansixteen(16)daysduringtheschoolyear.AcademiccreditwillnotbegrantedtoGrade9-12studentswithabsencesexceedingmorethaneight(8)dayspersemester.Grade6-8studentswhoexceedthesetotalswillriskpro-motiontothenextgrade.Studentsmissing8sessionsofasingleclass,eventhoughtheymaybepresentforotherclassesthosedays,alsorisklosingcreditforthatpar-ticularclass.Schoolsponsoredorapprovedactivitieswillbeexemptfromthe16-day/8dayrule.
Only in exceptional circumstancesmay thePrincipal grant awaiver tothisattendancerequirement. Extendedsummervacationsorvoluntaryvacationsduringtheschoolyeararenotconsideredexceptionalcircum-stances.Parentalrequestsforwaiversmustbesubmittedinwriting.
Ifastudentisdeniedpromotionorcreditforacourse/sduetoexcessiveabsences,theonlyrecourseistoappealinwritingdirectlytotheHeadofSchoolwhoshalldetermineifextenuatingcircumstancesofanunavoid-ablenatureareinvolved,he/shemaythendecideifawaiverofthispolicyisappropriate.
COMMUNICATIONWITHTHESCHOOLHome-to-schoolcommunicationsareimportant,andvaluedatLCS.Ad-ministratorsoperateonan“opendoor”policyandencourageparentswithquestionsorconcerns tomeetwith thePrincipal. FIREANDEMERGENCYDRILLSStudentsafetyisanoverridingconcernatLCS.Studentsandstaffpe-riodically practice how to quickly evacuate the buildings on campus incaseofanemergency.Studentsmayalsopracticeevacuatingthecam-pusandmovingtonearby‘safehavens.’Allteacherswillpostamapforemergencydrilldescriptionsandroutestoassemblyareasintheirclass-rooms. Emergencyevacuationof theclassroomwillbedesignatedbythecontinuousringof thesirens/bellsorbyanannouncementovertheschool’sPAsystem. LocksforphysicaleducationwillbeprovidedbyLCS,andareexpectedtobeusedany timea student hasPEor is using the changing room.Lostlockswillbetreatedlikealosttextbook,andmustbepaidforbythestudent.
LOST&FOUNDTofacilitatethereturnofmisplacedand‘lost’items,studentsshould:1. Placetheirnamesinall textbooks,billfolds,wearingapparel,elec-

LUNCHHotlunchescanbepurchasedinschoolatlunchtime.Theschoolprovidessafedrinkingwaterforstudents. LCSStaffmonitor lunchareas. Stu-dentsarenotallowedtoleavetheschoolcampusduringlunchperiods,norshouldfoodfromhomebedeliveredduringtheschoolday.Deliveriesfrom take out restaurants areNOT allowed. Students are expected toleavetheirareacleanandplacetrashinthetrashcontainersandreturndishestothecanteen.
MAKE-UPWORKParentsmayrequestmakeupworkwhenstudentsareabsent formorethanoneday. It is thestudent’s responsibility toobtainmakeupwork.Requestsforassignmentsmaybemadebycallingthesecondaryschoolofficebefore9:00a.m.Assignmentsmaybepickedupbetween3:15pmand4:00p.m.atthePrincipal’sOffice.
Followinganexcusedabsence,astudentisentitledtofullacademicmakeupprivilegeswithnopenalties.For short absences thestudentwill begiventwomakeupdaysforeachdayabsent.Makeuptimeforlongerabsenceswillbedeterminedinareasonablemannersothestudentwillnotbeunnecessarilypenalized.

MEDICALCAREANDEMERGENCIESWhenmedicationisnecessaryforastudenttoremaininschool,awrittenorderfromthefamilyphysicianmustaccompanyallmedication, includ-ingaspirin.Directionsfortreatmentmustbeincludedontheprescriptionbottles or written by a doctor. All (even non-prescription)medicationsbroughttoschoolmustbedepositedwiththeschoolnursewhowillad-ministerthem.Parentswillbenotifiedimmediatelyinthecaseofseriousinjuryorillness.Parentsareexpectedtocometoschooltopickuptheirillchildrenasrequestedbytheschoolnurse.

SECURITYStudentsare responsible to safeguard their personal itemsandschoolbooks.Studentsshouldnotleavetheirvaluablesorschoolbooks/materi-alsunattended. Studentsareencouraged to lock-up theirvaluables intheir assigned lockers or keep themon their person. Bookbags/back-packsthatareleftunattendedtemptthieves.Unattendedbagsandbookswill be seizedand secured in thePrincipal’sOffice. Studentswho re-peatedly leave their property unattendedmay be assigned disciplinaryconsequence.

SOCIALEVENTSPeriodically,studentorganizationsmaysponsorsocialeventsoncampusafterschoolhours.TheseeventsmustbeapprovedbythePrincipalbe-forehand,sponsoredbystaffmembers,andchaperonedbyteachers/staffandparents.EventsarenormallyconductedonFridayeveningsandarescheduledtoendnotlaterthan11:00p.m.Schoolrulesapplyfortheseevents,andareineffectforthedurationoftheevent.TheseeventsareforLCSstudentsonly,unlessoutsideguestsareapprovedbythePrinci-palaheadoftheevent.
Studentsattendingsocialeventsmaynotdeparttheeventvenue(leav-ingcampus)andreturn.Studentsmustarriveateventsnolaterthan90minutesafterthe‘entrygate’hasbeenopened.Laterarrivalswillnotbeadmitted.
STUDENTREPRESENTATIVECOUNCILThepurposeoftheStudentRepresentativeCouncil(SRC)istopromoteleadershipandtoprovidefirsthandexperienceforstudentsinthemeth-odsandproceduresofdemocraticgovernment.TheSRCiscomposedofelectedrepresentativesofeachgradeintheSeniorSchoolandofficerselectedfromtheuppergrades.Theymaintainliaisonwithschooladmin-istratorsandensure that student concernsanddesiresare known. Inaddition,theSRCsponsorsspecialactivitiesfortheentireschool.
VISITORSParents and relatives are welcome to visit Lincoln Community Schoolatanytime.Otherfamilymembersmayvisitifarrangementsaremadeaheadof time. Pleasecheck in theschooloffice to receiveaVisitor’sBadgebeforegoingtotheclassroom,onthedayofthevisit.
Studentsareallowedtohavevisitors.Thismustbediscussedandap-provedaheadof timeby theSecondarySchoolPrincipalor theMiddleSchoolCoordinator.Inmostinstancesonedayof“visiting”willbegrant-ed.Visiting friendswhohavenotbeenpre-approvedmaybeasked toleave.
