actual work goes down and it is fun to have that time
with your colleagues to chat about everyone’s plans for
the Christmas break and waiting for the proverbial
clock hand to reach noon. At which point, almost the
entire town or city where you work will have people
leaving their places of employ, in crowds and full of
guilty pleasure heading for the local pub.
My absolute, most favorite part of Christmas Eve
is heading home and taking in all the mouthwatering
smells in preparation for the day ahead, baking minced
pies, glazing hams and most of all praying that the
turkey was not still frozen inside! As always, everything
would turn out fine and everyone would just enjoy eat-
ing Christmas lunch, relaxing, watching TV specials,
playing games and spending time with our nearest and
dearest, because that is really what it is all about.
We at the Limin’ Times wish you and your families
happy holidays and all the very best for the New Year.

Christmas at Home
I love Christmas and look forward to it every year,
the decorations, the presents under the tree, the con-
stant smell of something lovely cooking – and, of
course being around family and friends. I also enjoy
being in the BVI at this time of year, with its own
Christmas traditions such as the Christmas concerts,
events, parades and the seasonal food such as black
cake, coconut and guava tarts and the quintessential
guavaberry liquor.
However, when possible I like to be “home” with
my family for Christmas, which for me is the UK. Even
the weather, usually cold at this time of year, does
make for a cozy atmosphere. And there is the fact that
Christmas really begins in November, by the middle of
which, all of the stores and streets are decked out like
a winter wonderland and Christmas music is playing
everywhere you go. By December, the Christmas frenzy
is upon us in earnest. People are struggling into their
places of work despite the bitter weather, delayed or
cancelled trains and crowded buses – however, once
you are there, you are generally met by an oasis of
mince pies and hot chocolate, good-cheer and
Christmas carols. Diaries are booked ahead months in
advance for the a sheer avalanche of Christmas lunch-
es, parties, drinks and social functions that bring you
closer and closer and the big day itself.
My personal favorite has always been Christmas
Eve, I guess it is the fact that it is officially a “working
day,” however in the UK as in most places, not a lot of

The 10 Commandments of Self-Love
Send your questions to [email protected] or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided
Can one really give love to someone else and enjoy
a happy, mutual relationship if they do not even love
themselves? Without self-love persons are insecure,
jealous, abusers, accepting of abuse and miserable. So
since charity begins at home, let’s do some introspec-
tion into what it takes to really appreciate who you are.
1. Know your value and worth. You are unique and spe-
cial and your value is unmeasurable. Remind yourself of
that fact every day and know that you deserve the very
best of what life has to offer.
2. Do your part to meet your own emotional needs
instead of waiting for someone to do it for you; spend
time every day doing things that bring you a sense of
satisfaction and that put a smile on your face.
3. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. No one is perfect
so stop holding yourself up to impossible standards of
perfection. Just let go of the past and endeavour to do
better for now and the future.
4. Stay away from relationships that make you feel
less than who you know yourself to be. If someone con-
sistently puts you down, calls you names, physically or
emotionally abuses you, love yourself enough to move
on.
5. Nurture your soul with spiritual songs, readings and
uplifting thoughts. Having a spiritual connection helps
to heal our weary souls after stress or trauma and gives
us the hope we need to be survivors.
6. Take care of your body. Love your body and nurture
it by eating well, engaging in physical activity and wear-
ing clothes that flatter the
outer part of you.
7. Spend time alone every
day. Learn to enjoy your
own company. Listen to
your thoughts and your
dreams and ensure your
living environment reflects
you and enhances your positive mood.
8. Do things to improve yourself. Self-love is loving
who you are right now and it can still include recogniz-
ing that you have the potential for more. You will be
proud of yourself when you meet certain accomplish-
ments.
9. Look in the mirror every day. It is important to look at
who you are and do not be afraid to face yourself. Face
the mirror and thank God for who you are. Say, “I am
beautiful inside and out”. “I am a gift”.
10. Do not engage in self-harming behaviours. Loving
yourself means staying away from drugs and other
harmful substances and dealing with fear and pain with-
out inflicting further pain on yourself. Be gentle with
you.
If you are used to being battered and beaten down
by others or you have treated yourself unkindly, then it
is time for a turnaround. Time to focus on loving you and
then you will be able to give true love to others.

Caribbean Christmas at Myett’sIt’s that time of year again to get out the
Guavaberry. Guavaberry also known as the rumberry
should not be confused with the guava. A guavaberry is
about the size of a cherry and can be yellow-orange or
dark red in color. These exotic berries are common to
the Caribbean and at Christmas time it’s pretty much a
staple. Guavaberry is used to make everything from
jams and liqueur to my personal favorite guavaberry
tarts.
On Sunday, 21 December –Myett’s are holding their
Annual Guavaberry Liqueur & Dessert Competition. This
gives you the chance to experience and showcase the
best guavaberry recipes in two categories: Guavaberry
Liqueurs and Guavaberry Dessert Recipes. The liqueur
category could be rum, wine or whatever drink you like
the best and desserts are everything from tarts, cakes
and puddings. There will be live steel pan music and
judging begins at 4pm. If you’re a guavaberry lover you
don’t want to miss this fruity event.
Maybe you’re a wine and art lover, if so then you’re
in luck, as Myett’s will be having their Arts Festival on
December 28th at 1pm. This monthly beach side festival
event has become a signature event for the restaurant –
where the beat goes on! The festival features local
artists and allows visitors and locals to sample some of
the exemplary art, exotic fruits and local fayre the BVI
has to offer. There will be steel pan vibes, brunch with
bottomless mimosas and live jazz with the acclaimed
Glenroy Charles from 7pm.
So come on down to Myett’s for a Caribbean
Christmas where the beat goes on and there is some-
thing for everyone. For details on entering the
Guavaberry Competition call 495-9649.

The Hundred Foot Journey, starring the
redoubtable Helen Mirren, is a confection of a movie
that crosses cultures and cuisine in equal measure. The
movie starts off in India where the Kadam family owns a
restaurant in Mumbai. The successful restaurant is
destroyed during a political riot and the family’s mother
is killed. Overwhelmed with grief, the Kadams under the
stewardship of Papa Kadam (Om Puri) relocate to
England, where they find neither the climate or the food
to their liking, and move onto the south of France.
Here Papa Kadam discovers a boarded up restau-
rant for sale in a picturesque village and unilaterally
declares that he has found what he is searching for. His
two sons, are skeptical but agree to settle in this small
town which already contains a restaurant renowned in
the region across the street – one hundred feet away to
be exact.
The competing La Saule Pleurer is a Michelin
starred restaurant owned by the widow, Madame
Mallory (Mirren). In search of a second star Madame
Mallory, is appalled to discover that an Indian restau-
rant, complete with a flashy sign and Bollywood music,
has opened up across the street.
Under the skilful cooking of one of Papa Kadam’s
two sons, Hassan (Mannish Dayal), Maison Mumbai
turns out excellent food and gradually wins over the
local residents, including the town’s beleaguered
mayor. The snooty Madame Mallory continues to con-
sider the Indian upstarts enemies of sorts and tries to
do what she can to undermine them. When one of her
racist chefs attempts to burn down the Maison Mumbai,
her sense of justice wins out and she slowly begins to
befriend the family, especially Hassan who has dis-
played promising talent at cooking both Indian and
French food.
Romance also begins to blossom in this new culi-
nary world. Papa Kadam woos Madame Mallory and
Hassan tries to win over one of her sous chefs,
Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), through tenderness and
her palate. But when Hassan becomes the head chef at
La Saule Pleurer, this romance begins to be undermined
by professional rivalry. With Hassan’s artistry, the
restaurant not only does well, but wins another
Michelin star. Virtually elevated to culinary rock star sta-
tus, Hassan goes to Paris, where he wins fame – but not
necessarily happiness – as the chef at one of the city’s
trendiest restaurants.
As with many of life’s lessons, it takes a while for
Hassan to come to terms with his fame and learn where
his true values and heart lies. Melding romance and
cuisine, The Hundred Foot Journey is a charming cine-
matic feast.

Lime ...“to hang around idly” or “to go out onthe town.”Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands EnglishCreole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news aboutwhen and where to “lime” in the British VirginIslands.
As it has each season since the current seriesreboot premiered in 2005, Doctor Who delivers a specialholiday episode, premiering Stateside Thursday, Dec. 25,on BBC America.
And, as usual, the show’s home network, the BBC,is guarding plot details so closely that it’s starting to lookas if MI5, the British intelligence agency, is in charge ofpress and publicity at “the Beeb.”
Here’s what the BBC has confirmed: The title of thisyear’s yuletide special is Last Christmas, and accordingto a not-terribly-illuminating synopsis,we find the 12th Doctor (PeterCapaldi) and his companion, school-teacher Clara Oswald (JennaColeman), trapped on an arctic baseand menaced by sinister creatures ofsome kind. Luckily for them, they getsome much-needed assistance from acertain right jolly old elf, played byguest star Nick Frost (and let’s pausefor a second here to acknowledgethat, if you’re casting the role of Santa Claus, an actornamed “Nick Frost” is just about perfect).
Steven Moffat, the Doctor Who show runner, actual-ly set up the Christmas special in last month’s Season 8finale, entitled “Death in Heaven.” If you missed that,BBC America is airing it again immediately before the
Christmas special, but beware! Spoilers about that finalefollow in the very next paragraph.
That episode ended on a very downbeat note, asThe Doctor and Clara said their goodbyes at the end oftheir most recent adventure. The Doctor had set upevents to ensure that Clara and her lover, fellow teacherDanny Pink (Samuel Anderson), would have a happyending, but an unexpected plot twist seemed to indicateClara and Danny are permanently lost to each other. Before Clara can reveal this to the Doctor, he tells her he
has found Gallifrey, his long-losthome planet. It’s a well-meaning lie,but he thinks Clara wants him toleave so she and Danny can starttheir life together. Clara, meanwhile, pretends all is well so the Doctorwon’t feel compelled to stay with her.
After they part, The Doctor ispreparing to depart in his TARDISwhen Santa appears, insisting thatThe Doctor and Clara must heal their
relationship. Moffat teased fans that the Christmas spe-cial would resolve the future of these two characters, butthe London tabloid The Daily Mirror spoiled that sus-pense recently by reporting that Coleman has signed onfor at least part of Season 9. Fans will have to discoveradditional details on their own.
