BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival

This Week’s Feature Story

In just over a week hundreds of sailors and their

crews will gather at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina for the

2012 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. The antici-

pation is building for this, the biggest yacht race in the

BVI. Running from 26th March to 1st April, the regatta is

now in its 41st year, so head to Nanny Cay to experience

world-class racing action as well as the great post-race

debates amongst the crews at the bar afterwards as tac-

tics are examined and teams prepare themselves for the

next day.

The BVI Spring Regatta truly has something for

everyone, and for all levels of racing know how. The

Sailing Festival kicks off the action with races up the Sir

Francis Drake Channel to the

renowned Bitter End Yacht Club.

After this warm up, the BVI Spring

Regatta Village opens on Thursday

night for three days of world class

racing action.

The Regatta Village also

becomes party central and the heart-

beat of the event. It will be in full

swing with bars open from 2:00pm

to midnight daily, international and local food stalls, a

fashion show and live entertainment each night includ-

ing Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats, 3rd Dimension, Eric

Stone, Quito and The Edge and Gazebo.

And last but not least, although the sailing teams

are all going for gold, the BVI Spring Regatta organizers

are going for green and gold! Already holders of the

Silver Certificate awarded by the Sailors of the Sea Clean

Regatta Program, this year the team is going for the Gold

certificate. One major environmental initiative that has

been introduced are the winners’ awards which have

been made from re-cycled glass by the BVI’s Glass Studio

Project. Other initiatives include spill kits for race com-

mittee boats, environmentally

friendly cleaning products in skip-

pers’ bags, food vendors using

biodegradable containers and

Mount Gay’s re-usable cups. So get

along to Nanny Cay for some serious

racing action, party with the crews

and enjoy the camaraderie at what is

undoubtedly one of the year’s most

exciting events.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on thetown.”Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands EnglishCreole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news aboutwhen and where to “lime” in the British VirginIslands.

Crying FowlThere are chickens all over Tortola: at restaurants

(and not just on the menu), in formerly quiet neighbor-

hoods where residents awaken to the clucking of hens

and the crowing of roosters; at the beach, and even

behind my office window. Who do these chickens belong

too? Are people keeping them for their eggs, to make

stew, are they pets, or are they just wild?

I ask these questions because I had been the surro-

gate mother of two chicks. We started with just one

chick, which we rescued from our cat. Roger had come

up the hill with the poor little creature in his mouth,

pleased as punch with his miniscule prey. Miraculously, it

had come to no harm. It was adorable and fluffy, with a

delightful little cheep, cheep, so we named it chirpy, and

decided to raise it until it was big enough to fend for

itself.

That was chicken number one. I found the second

while going for a walk in my neighborhood just a few

days later – a tiny piece of black fluff running along the

road, lost and motherless. I looked around, but there

wasn’t another chicken in sight. “I do not need another

chicken,” I thought to myself as I bent down to scoop it

up – but on the other hand, I couldn’t bear for it to

become road kill. So I carried it back to my house and

placed it in a large plastic storage box with water and

some cooked rice. I tapped at the bottom of the box in

my best mother hen imitation to show it the food.

When my husband came home, I could hear his

unspoken words: “Why would you bring another chicken

home? Isn’t one enough?” But he too began tapping on

the bottom of the box in his own mother chicken imper-

sonation.

Chirpy 2 thrived for a while, happy to follow around

in Chirpy 1’s footsteps. Sadly though, he didn’t make it.

Amazingly, another bird came into our lives just a day or

two later, thanks once again to Roger. It was a tiny

ground dove, which we hope to raise until it’s fit enough

return to the wild. As for Chirpy 1, he’s growing by the

day; we’re hoping to find him a good home before he

gets much bigger.

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Would I Lie To Him If I Loved Him

Send your questions to [email protected] and aresponse will be provided

Dear Koren,

I have a boyfriend that I am really in love with and I

want us to have a happy life together. However, some-

times I find myself being dishonest and deliberately

withholding information from him about things that I

have done. Would I lie to him if I genuinely love him?

What does this mean for our relationship?

–Confused

Dear Confused,

Lying to someone you love is not an ideal ingredient

for a good relationship, even though sometimes it seems

like an easy way out. When you lie to someone, you feel

guilty and sometimes trapped in your lie and you keep

telling others to cover up the first one. Before you know

it, you have made a mountain out of a molehill and the

truth gets lost somewhere under that mountain.

When your boyfriend finds out, he would feel

betrayed and the trust would be diminished in the rela-

tionship. Going forward, he might question everything

you say and you would feel that he is being unfair when

you are genuinely telling the truth.

Tell me though, why do you feel the need to lie? Are

you afraid that he will get angry? Leave you? Telling the

truth is a risk you must take if this relationship will grow

and flourish. I believe that your partner will appreciate

your efforts to be honest and if he gets upset, then you

must give him some time to come to terms with your

actions. If he leaves you for telling the truth, then maybe

that relationship is not for you anyway.

It is possible to be in love with someone and lie to

him if you feel that your story will preserve the relation-

ship or protect what you have. However, when you real-

ize how the lies are affecting the relationship, true love

will propel you to speak the truth to change the circum-

stances.

So my dear, start confessing. Sit with your partner

and explain to him what is bothering you. Give him some

insight as to why you said what you did and your reasons

for doing so. Don’t try to excuse your behaviors or justi-

fy any lies, just try to be as honest and open as possible.

Think of the golden rule of doing unto others as you

would like done to you and speak the truth in love.

Cast & CreditsTyler Perry ---------------------------Wesley DeedsGabrielle Union------------------------------NatalieBrian White----------------------------------WalterThandie Newton-----------------------------Lindsey

In his first leading role without his trademark

Madea persona, Tyler Perry tackles the romantic drama

genre. Set in San Francisco, Perry plays Wesley Deeds,

CEO of Deeds Inc., a computer software firm who’s

engaged to the beautiful Natalie (Gabrielle Union) a suc-

cessful realtor.

While he has a wedding to plan, he’s also dealing

with his wayward brother Walter (Brian White), who has

a knack of getting into trouble very often, much to the

chagrin of their authoritarian mother Wilimena (Phylicia

Rashad). It was because of Walter’s problems that

Wesley had to alter his life to take over the family busi-

ness that was left by their deceased father. Having to

drive Walter to work because his driver’s license was

suspended, they run into a woman Lindsey (Thandie

Newton) who’s parked in Wesley’s spot at their building.

While Walter rudely yells at her to move, Lindsey equal-

ly responds back at both brothers and Walter calls a tow

truck to remove her vehicle when they realize her six-

year old daughter Ariel ( Jordenn Thompson) is inside.

It turns out Lindsey works at the building as a late

shift janitor and is coming in early to get an advance on

her pay because she’s late on her rent. Adding more

stress to the day, child services is on her back because

she’s also been late in dropping off and picking up Ariel

from school.

After being evicted from her home and spending

nights in her car, Lindsey starts working more hours with

Ariel sleeping in the supply room when Wesley spots her.

She initially mistakes him for one of the employees and

wonders if he will report her to “the man” until he tells

her his last name. Softening her attitude a bit, the two

share a meal and tell each other background stories. Her

plight was the result of her husband dying in Iraq, which

left her alone to care for her child and abandon her plans

to be a nurse.

Meanwhile, Natalie starts to wonder about Wesley

when she can no longer predict his every move. He even

starts changing his daily routine like listening to rap

music before going to work and dressing differently. A

change Lindsey has inspired. After child services takes

Ariel away Wesley steps in and helps by setting up

Lindsey with some living arrangements and making her

life comfortable. Throughout the film as Wesley and

Lindsey grow closer we start to see Wesley question

whose life is he living, this isn’t the life he planned for

himself.

In the end, love is a complicated emotion and ulti-

mately fate determines what’s best for everyone.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

School sports foster untold experiences, offer chal-

lenges, there’s camaraderie among players, teamwork,

discipline, lifelong lessons among a host of other intan-

gibles for participants.

The BVI is one of the few countries that doesn’t

have inter-secondary school competition programs in a

myriad of sports and as such, most team sports in partic-

ular, have not had the infusion of new players to foster its

continued growth and development, thus ensuring the

longevity of the sport.

There isn’t competition for sports on National

Teams to represent the Territory in regional and interna-

tional competitions.

The BVI Amateur Volleyball Association has this

year, introduced a Girls High School exhibition league,

with participants from Elmore Stoutt, Seventh Day

Adventist, St. Georges and Cedar School.

Elmore Stoutt High School Captain Sheronda

Pickering is in her second year of playing. “Previously, we

played in the women’s league so it was a bit more diffi-

cult,” she noted. “Playing now (with our peers) is a bit

calmer, relaxing and easier.”

Rea Sprauve also agreed its easier. “It’s less intimi-

dating because you were playing against women who

were playing for umpteen years,” she noted. “It’s defi-

nitely easier and I think it’s good. I’ve been looking for a

sport for a long time. I’ve found volleyball and I’m

happy.”

Armoy James, also of Elmore Stoutt and a two year

player sided with her mates on the ease of the games.

“Today for example, I was expecting more work,” she

said. “I was a little disappointed, but I find playing in this

league is easier on us, because we get to learn the game

better. I think the league is a good idea.”

Cedar School’s captain Kirsten Malone, a volleyball

newbie, said it’s fun playing “but, it sucks loosing the

games,” she said. “It’s good for us because our school

only has a basketball team – and all schools have other

sports they play – so it was good to have another sport

in our school.”

Teammate Argyro Olympitis said her only volleyball

experience comes from pick up games at school – not as

part of a team – but as a lesson. “I enjoy playing the

game even if I do miss the ball or don’t get it over the

net,” she explained. “I enjoy playing and trying my hard-

est. Playing in the league, sometimes it has been difficult

and as Kirsten said, losing sucks, but when we win, it’s

one of those things you can’t really explain anyway.”

Samora Lewis, a rookie, admits it’s fun playing in

the league. “But I wish we could practice more,” she

said. “I do enjoy playing in the league with your friends

and getting to hang out with them. I think the league is

good because we get to interact with other people.”

CSI: Miami Stars Contemplate Chances of Romance and RenewalIn the episode airing Sunday, March 25, called Law

& Disorder, Calleigh makes a life-changing decision thatmay give her a second chance with Delko (or at leastthat’s the tease from CBS).

As to what’s happening with the relationship —nicknamed Delquesne, a mash-up of the characters’ lastnames — Rodriguez says, “Not enough, in my opinion,as usual. I think we’re always sort of hinting at it and nottaking a big bite. Maybe there’s a sense of urgency nowthat the season’s winding down.

“I think there’s some longing to be together onboth parts, but there’s been quite a bit of space. Themain problem is that we just haven’t made the decisionto go there and explore it. I don’t want to speculate onwhat’s going on off camera. Maybe that’ll end up beingwhat we end up seeing.”

Both Rodriguez and Procter express concern aboutwhether the show will get an 11th season, which wouldmean either Delquesne gets resolved this season or notat all.

“I find it hard to believe there is any doubt,” saysRodriguez, “but everything I hear leads me to believethere is an element of doubt. This is the first time I’veever not been 100 percent confident. I feel pretty good, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.”

“I would want a real senior year,” Procter says. “Iwould want us to know this is our last year. I would wantthere to be parties. I would want us to do things togeth-er, Bonnie-and-Clyde it up. It might be a negotiatingpoint for CBS and David (series star David Caruso). Let’shope it’s an artistic choice and not that.”

Of course, this raises the question, could CSI:Miami continue without Caruso’s Lt. Horatio Caine?

“I don’t know,” Procter says. “That’s a goodquestion.”

Emily Procter and Adam Rodriguez take a break fromfilming to contemplate the on-again-but-mostly-off-again romance between their respective characters,CSI’s Calleigh Duquesne and Eric Delko.

Procter, back in fighting trim after having her firstchild last season, relates the long will-they-or-won’t-they wait to a similar situation between two of the char-acters — Lady Mary and Matthew — on her belovedBritish period drama Downton Abbey, which airs onPBS’ Masterpiece.

“It really bothered me,” she says, “until I sawDownton Abbey, and I realized, as a viewer, I loved thecarrot on the stick of Mary and Matthew. You’re watch-ing people who are right for each other and have beenthrough enough, that you know are eventually going toget together, with just a little ‘Eek!’ that they might not.

And for those viewers who wonder when it wasexactly that Calleigh and Eric broke up — which appar-ently took place sometime in the fall of 2010 — Proctersays it happened, “when Emily Procter got pregnant, and she couldn’t go out in the field, when I didn’t reallywork for a year. I didn’t know they’d broken up either.

“I actually was in the writers’ office a couple ofepisodes ago, and I’m like, ‘Are we broke up?’ But it’sCSI: Miami time, and you don’t know how long it’s been. It’s probably just been a week.”
