35th Sweethearts of the CaribbeanThis Week’s Feature Story
ered “classics,” while the 20 to 30 year¬¬-old models
are humorously called “wannabees.” One can expect
to see the traditional island sloops, of which the BVI
can now boast of three. Some authentic and refur-
bished, the sloops used to ply these waters filled with
cattle and dry goods from other islands. Other entries
include the classic 19 foot Squibs; Faith, Hope, Charityand Grace from the BVI Watersports Center.
Registration will be held on Friday night at 6 pm at
the Beach Bar by Peg Leg’s Restaurant and the racing
events begin on Saturday at 12pm.The schooner race
with the big boats is followed by the single-handed
event. On Sunday starting at 11am, the classics and
wannabees race is followed by the Sweetheart’s cou-
ples’ race. There will be wards
presentations after the races
each day. Stay around to enjoy
a Caribbean barbecue and
music on Saturday night by
the local group the Razor
Blades. Come on out and
enjoy seeing some elegant
boats in competition from a
stunning vantage point.
The classic wood boats that used to be the
“queens of the seas” in days gone by are sailing back
in this weekend for the 35th annual Sweethearts of
the Caribbean Regatta, held this year at Nanny Cay
Marina. Hosted by the “Loyal” West End Yacht Club,
this racing event held on Saturday 16th and Sunday
17th is really more about camaraderie then competi-
tion. “Some of the same faces come back year after
year and it’s definitely an older crowd that appreci-
ates these vessels,” Commodore of the WEYC and
event coordinator Martin Van Houten said with a
laugh. “It is hard to find these classic schooners, as
wood is a difficult product to maintain on the sea and
all the young folks want fiberglass boats built for
speed.”
There are several different
categories for the boats that
enter the competition, as the
event covers a wide spectrum of
yachts. The schooners are divid-
ed in two groups according to
the age of the hull design. Those
vessels that have a hull design
40 years older plus are consid-

Even with a midseason return and a shorter run
this time, Dana Delany is happy her latest series still
has life.
It actually can be considered a new life, since the
ABC medical mystery Body of Proof will reflect signifi-
cant changes as its third season starts Tuesday, Feb.
19. Delany’s Dr. Megan Hunt will be without several
colleagues who were present from the show’s start:
Peter Dunlop (Nicholas Bishop), her investigator, who
was stabbed by an enemy of Megan’s in the Season 2
finale; and homicide detectives Bud Morris and
Samantha Baker (John Carroll Lynch, Sonja Sohn).
Police work will remain a factor in Body of Proof, though ... a bigger factor, in fact, given the main cast
addition. Mark Valley (“Human Target,” “Boston
Legal”) worked previously with Delany on the short-
lived Fox serial “Pasadena,” and their reunion makes
him Tommy Sullivan, an investigator with whom
Megan has a personal past — a fact reinforced by
their playfully edgy exchanges. Jeri Ryan and Geoffrey
Arend are among the show’s original co-stars who
remain.
“It’s odd,” the lively, friendly Delany admits of
adjusting to the revamped “Body of Proof” approach.
“I feel it’s more of a ‘two-hander’ now, since a lot of it

is me and Mark (debating) the science versus the
police work. I’m working more than ever now. The
hours just seem to be longer.”
Body of Proof has loaded up on Season 3 guests
who aren’t strangers to television watchers. Among
those appearing — some for more than one episode
— are Annie Wersching (24), Sarah Jane Morris
(NCIS), Tim DeKay (White Collar), Henry Ian Cusick
(Lost), Richard Burgi (Desperate Housewives),
Michael Nouri (recently killed off on NCIS), Ivan Sergei
(The Mentalist) and Ray Wise (Reaper).“I just go to work early in the morning and come
home late at night, and I still love what I do,” Delany
says. “And, as we know, it doesn’t take just one per-
son to make a show.”

He’s Either In or Out
Send your questions confidentially [email protected] or via twitter at @korennorton
Dear Koren,My husband is very annoying. If I have a cold or
my monthlies, he sleeps in the guest room. I know acold is catching but that is the time I need the com-fort. He is very clean conscious and I need to knowhow to break him out of it because I have reached thepoint of telling him if he will leave the room for 4 daysevery month or when I am sick, then he should stayout forever. –Angry wife
Dear wife,
The way I see it, you have three choices:
One, you can force him to stay in the room with
you and have him flinch at every turn or be totally mis-
erable. Maybe he cannot help himself – that is just
how he is. What makes you think you have the right to
“break him out of it”? He is not a dog to be trained; he
is a person to be loved and understood. I’m sure his
behavior can be frustrating sometimes, but forcing
him to act the way you want him to can make him very
miserable. You will then be writing me saying “Dear
Koren, my husband complies with my every request,
but he never laughs or smiles anymore…”
Two, you can let him have his 4 days off every
month and use the time to sprawl over the whole bed
and watch your girly television shows that he does
not enjoy, knowing that he is right in the house if you
need him and in four days, he will be right back where
you want him to be. You could consider asking him

Ask Koren
kindly to hug or comfort you briefly or you could use
a pillow or hot water bottle where convenient.
Three, if he wants to, you can encourage to get
help to understand why he is the way he is. Maybe
there were incidents in his life that affected him caus-
ing him to have a phobia of certain things, or maybe
he just does not like certain bodily fluids. Talking to a
counselor about his fears might help him to realize
that some of his habits hurt rather than help him and
might be a bit unreasonable. Sometimes people listen
to things more easily when they are hearing it from an
objective third party.
Telling him to stay out of the room forever is not an
option because your email did not say that you want-
ed your marriage to end.
We must learn to love and accept people for who
they are. Ask him to tell you some of the faults or
shortcomings that you have that frustrate him and
you might be surprised at what he “grins and bears”.

The Joys of Boating
Since our new condo is right on the water and
sports a dock behind a protected reef, I absolutely
had to have a boat. Not a dinghy or a kayak or some-
thing small and sensible, but a fast boat I could go off-
shore fishing on. “You could just rent a boat,” said my
wife Betty, displaying that annoying common sense
again. “It’s not the same,” I said stubbornly. “It would-
n’t be MY boat.”
I looked around locally, but there didn’t seem to
be anything suitable within my price range. I surfed
the Internet and there she was. I called the broker in
North Carolina. “The one you’re looking at is a little
out of your range,” he said when I told him how much
I was prepared to spend. “But I have something else
that might be just the thing.”
I’m not usually one to spend large sums on the
Internet. In fact, I’ve never trusted myself to buy any-
thing on e-bay, though friends tell me it’s perfectly
safe. But after talking to my friendly broker for a
while and looking at some photos, I decided I’d
found my boat.
My son-in-law lived nearby, so he drove down and
took a look at it for me, bringing his experience with
inshore fishing boats to bear. “She looks good,” he
said, pointing out a few surface flaws rather to be
expected on a 15-year-old boat. I gave the broker my
credit card details, the deal was sealed and the fun
began. I ordered an anchor some fenders, chairs and
dock lines, sent them to the yard and had them put
aboard. She needed bottom paint and I had that done
and she was ready to ship on her trailer.
I filled out the paperwork for the shipper and got a
shipping date. Then the boat disappeared!
When the dock delivery date was reached, I called
the shipper and gave them the details. She had not
arrived. I called the broker. She had left three days
ago! I groaned. My boat had been stolen before I’d
even seen her. Then the broker called. The trucker had
a breakdown on the way to the docks. My boat was
safe and would be here around Christmas.
It was a proud day when I trailered my boat away
from Port Purcell docks. I stopped at a gas station on
my way to the nearest slipway. You could say reality
kicked in when my boat consumed $500 worth of gas
at the first fill. Hopefully the shock would start to fade
when the fun part began.

Downton AbbeyDownton Abbey, the addictive melodrama that
has captured the hearts of millions around the world,
has begun its third season on PBS. Relentlessly glam-
orous, it offers up yet another glimpse into the lives of
the family of Lord and Lady Grantham, and the diverse
and loyal coterie of domestics, who serve them in the
sprawling estate they all call home.
Spanning a period just prior to the First World War
to 1920, this sumptuous series is a look at how life in
England once was – when aristocrats ruled the coun-
try and tradition and family name were everything.
The Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) presides over
a family of three daughters at a time when only a male
can inherit property. The quest to find an heir leads to
Matthew Crawley, a distant cousin and a lawyer who
is initially uncomfortable at the thought of running
the massive estate. He is in love with the eldest
daughter, Mary, but his love is complicated by the fact
that he is engaged to another while Mary seems more
interested in marrying for a title rather than love.
When the First World War intervenes the mores
and traditions of Downton Abbey and much of
England are turned on upside. Servants who had
enlisted and returned home to a different world begin
to feel that they are entitled to more in life, and even
Lord Grantham’s daughter Sybil chafes under a sys-
tem that requires her to marry for money and rank
rather than love. Headstrong and rebellious, she
defies her father, forsakes her fortune and runs off
with the chauffeur, a radical Irishman dedicated to
freeing Ireland from the British and ending the stifling
British class system.
A lot can happen in two seasons and the third
begins with some momentous changes – the wedding
of Mary and Matthew and the news that Lord
Grantham has lost his fortune in a bad investment.
Cora’s mother (an artfully caustic Shirley McClaine)
arrives from the states for the wedding and shakes up
the family’s previously unshakable values. Her tongue
is as sharp and scathingly sarcastic as that of Lord
Grantham’s mother, the Dowager Countess (played by
the indomitable Maggie Smith). When Cora first mar-
ried Lord Grantham, her family fortune saved a finan-
cially floundering Downton Abbey. But alas, Cora’s
mother will not provide the funds to rescue the estate
and the family’s opulent lifestyle a second time and
the search to rescue it must continue. Meanwhile
downstairs, the trials, intrigues and petty plots of the
many servants, who keep the upstairs running as
smoothly as a well-tuned Rolls Royce, carry on with-
out abate.
With sumptuous settings and astoundingly beau-
tiful period dress, Downton Abbey is a feast for the
eyes. After three seasons, the plot has become a
shade melodramatic, but being transported to such a
beguiling era never ceases to amaze or to entertain.

Fans will get another chance to see splendid
Rugby action this weekend, when the BVI hosts
Curacao in a NACRA 15’s Caribbean Championships
match at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on
Friday night, starting at 6 p.m.
Saturday will see what is termed the ‘Clash of
Rugby’ when Curacao is joined by the U.S. Virgin
Islands and a team from Princeton, starting at 1 p.m.
“We had a first round match in St. Lucia some
weeks ago which we won, so now we have the second
match at home,” Sherlock Solomon said, noting that
they have learnt their lesson from their last NACRA
match against Barbados, when they lost on the last
play of the game held here.
“The Curacao team is a team in the building stage
like the BVI, therefore it’s going to be a clash of
emerging teams I would say. So, once bitten, twice
shy. We are expecting a victory against Curacao this
time, we can’t afford to lose this one and make it two
in a row – definitely not,” he stated.
While the team will not be the same one the
played against Barbados in its last NACRA match as
several players have left the territory, some young
players from the U19 side will be seeing action.
“We have a few youths coming through, mostly
from the U16s,” he noted. “In our last tour to St. Lucia,
we had two youngsters who are in the program that
have made the team. Melvin Knight from Seventh Day
Adventist and Austin Keil from Cedar School were on
the squad. There’s a third one we expect to play in this
home game, who will be identified on the U19 squad
going forward, so they are definitely going to be rep-
resenting the BVI this weekend.”
Capitalizing on the Curacao visitors, Saturday will
see about six matches including USVI vs Princeton,
BVI vs USVI and Princeton vs Curacao. There will also
be a Ladies Touch between the BVI vs USVI, BVI vs
Princeton and Curacao vs USVI.
St. Thomas who have been developing their
Rugby team have been invited for the Saturday
action. “It’s more or less a four-way festival with the
involvement of Curacao, who will be staying over,” he
said. “Since we have so many teams involved, we
might have to cut the time down to 25 minute halves
from the regular 80 minutes it might be 50 minutes
per game as we expect to play several games.
Saturday is going to be a long day of games.”
There is no admission to the matches on Friday or
Saturday, Solomon said. “We want the crowd to come
down and support the BVI both days,” he said.
“There’ll be a live bar and snacks on sale as well.”
BVI looking to avenge home loss vs Barbados
Solomon: “We have to win this game”
