Performance NotesIn this song the image of the Lord, the shepherd feeding his flock, is combined with threetexts from different places in the Old and New Testaments. At the beginning of Verses 1 and 2(and in the middle of Verse 3) the sudden entrance of the C chord should be accompanied by

forceful (“I myself will shepherd them,” and “Take my yoke...”) The Refrain, each time it returns, exhibits again the calmness and gentleness of the Lord’s care. A soloist may sing the Verses, withthe assembly entering on the Refrain.

The guitar picking pattern should be steady with little change of tempo until the very end. TheC chord is very important to the structure of the song and can be played in any number of ways(see Guitar Chord Charts). The first chart shows the configuration which gives the most satisfac-tory sound. Some work on one of the versions of C will pay off in the effectiveness of the song.

Like a Shepherd works well at meditative moments in the Mass, such as at communion (especiallyappropriate because of the “feeding his flock” imagery). It is also very appropriate for use atfuneral Masses.
