We are thrilled to be celebrating the one year anniversary of Ligné Magazine this Fall. Looking back at the first issue it is amazing to see how much we have evolved, and I am excited to introduce several new features in our largest issue to date.

“Little Black Book” is our new industry insider guide that brings tips and tricks from top editors, bloggers and writers on how to get your work noticed. Our “What Are You Wearing?” feature is a new personal favorite where we have asked top design professionals what looks they are most excited about for Fall. This issue also brings innovative new trends from home to fashion, and a walk down the Kyle Bunting Red Carpet at this year’s Fashion’s Night Out in Los Angeles.

MX: Your focus is on helping interior designers and manufacturers position their branding - what is the most imperative thing to keep in mind when brand-ing the identity of your company?

AB: It is crucial to remember that effective design takes time, and that the client is the boss. There have been times I catch myself thinking my idea is best- if it is not what the client wants, then it in fact is wrong. My job is to truly understand the underlying visual aesthetic for each brand across the board- which, when working with various designers with contrasting products and personalities, can be very difficult. I keep a working file with design notes per client to keep myself in check.

MX: If you could give one tip when it comes to ef-fective marketing, what would it be?

AB: Excuse me for being forward, but “Keep it simple, stupid”. Pretty cliché but very much true. Solidify the message you are trying to portray, and communicate that information within a simple design that is concise and easily understandable- and pretty, of course!

MX: What is it about the interior design industry that drew you in?

AB: Originally I began studying a double major of In-terior Design and Fine Arts at Kansas State University- at the time, the interior classes were my least favorite. When it came to coordinating an overall theme with fabrics and key pieces for a room- my ideas were subpar. However, I aced my classes in AutoCAD and spacial planning- and I can organize a pretty solid composition board. With my obsessive attention to detail, I decided to give graphic design a shot instead.

Post KSU, I made the move to Los Angeles to con-tinue my studies in Visual Communications within a

private design institute. After the summer quarter, I found a job listing for a design firm that was in need of a graphic designer to rebrand the company identity. My thoughts- sure, I can handle that. Many thanks to Craigslist, I began working for luxury interior design firm Adam Hunter, Inc. where I also became heavily involved with custom furniture design. After develop-ing a few projects, it was a quick realization that I had growing strengths in technical design- and I excelled most when those talents were applied within an inte-rior setting.

The creativity, design development and pure drive for innovation within this industry are key concepts that I personally thrive from. Working with multiple clients that produce such an array of products gives a work-ing environment that is constantly evolving and mov-ing forward- and shows no signs of slowing down.

MX: How would you best describe the day to day behind the scenes at Ligné Agency?

AB: A day at Ligné, oh my. From a company stand-point, this place is rockin! We are in constant com-munication with every one of our clients at all times of the day- it’s truly amazing to see how close the relationships are with the many designers we work with. Behind the scenes from my desk, be ready for a day filled with everlasting energy, French house music compliments of iTunes radio, and an eager motivation to get things done!

Reigning

Windfall Contemporary Crystal Lighting celebrated the Grand Opening of their new flagship showroom in Munich on

September 1, 2012 with guests from over 20 countries. The full day event included

a press preview, special gathering for their international agents, followed by an

evening of food and dancing. The new showroom will serve as the global

headquarters for Windfall, and showcases some of their most spectacular designs

that can be found in luxury hotels, boutiques, palaces and residences around

the world.

Now standing as the prominent gateway into the city, the Absolute Towers have become an international landmark within the skyline of Mississauga, Canada, the fastest-growing suburb of Toronto.

he buildings were designed by Beijing based architectural firm MAD Architects in collaboration with Canada’s own Burka Architects, with a conjoined design approach to add something of delicate human contrast to the skyline of Mississauga. The doubled organic towers are cohesively wrapped with open balconies, creating a distinct exterior appearance. Continuously shifting shadows across the facade create a sense of gracious movement within the structure, an abstract aesthetic that heavily contrasts the city’s backdrop of boxy office buildings within the surrounding community. Soaring skylines offer most apartments uninterrupted views of the developing urban areas.

Known within the city as the Marilyn Monroe tower, Building E stands at 50 stories tall while the complementing Building D reaches to 56 stories. Part of the Absolute City Centre development, a multi-structural condominium complex, the curvaceous buildings are the last two of five to be constructed.

Venturing out as a young firm, MAD Architects had come to terms with their rough stages of unsuccessful business development. Facing their final efforts in 2006, the firm submitted the design proposal for Absolute Towers into a slough of international architecture design competitions- which by chance became their first competition win. Built with such stature and beauty, the renowned acknowledgement from the towers has gracefully paved the way for ongoing success in their home country of China.

MAD Architects and environmental designers are in working stages of developing the ultimate structure of green design, known as the

Urban Forest, set to be constructed in the heart of Chongquing, China. Interpreting the natural mountainous landscape of the area, the

commercial high-rise building will be composed of abstracted floors that are built off-center from one another as the building ascends. Each level

will be fully encompassed by a wrap around glass balcony, providing innovative transparency throughout the building- as if each floor is floating.

It’s safe to say that a man’s favorite part of his house would be his man cave. It’s where you can invite your buddies, watch sports, drink, let yourself go and do whatever men do. However,

should you be proud of your mancave?

irst of all, let’s get rid of the nameman cave, bat cave or whatever name you and your roommates thought was cool back in college. Now that you are a suc-cessful man, do yourself a favor and do better than that. I personally like sanctu-ary because it is a place where you can relax and enjoy good company.

Here are a few things you can do to up-grade that man cave to a gentleman’s sanctuary:

Get rid of the oversized recliner and your old college furniture. You deserve a king’s room, therefore go out and buy some new furniture. Jiun Ho and Reagan Hayes have a variety of upholstery pieces that are both modern and classic that will help to elevate the space. To help lighten up the mood, the Nancy High Lamp from Hutton Home or any Jonathan Browning pieces are essential to your new and improved look. Sophisticated and well designed, and definitely not a thrown together after-thought.

Do not leave the walls empty, neither junk them with team Jerseys or sport posters. Again, high school was a long time ago. If sports are your thing, it is time to buy some sports related art to hang on your walls. I would recommend to pick a black and white photograph of a moment in sports history that you consider special or culturally related to your background and heritage.

One of the most important functions of your sanctuary is to entertain. For that, a Toulet blacklight pool table is a must have. It brings a unique edge to a normally very traditional piece. In case you are hosting a U.S Open gathering, the Bang-Olufsen home theater system brings clarity in their

audio that will change your life forever, and add a very modern touch to your sanctuary.

Lastly, but definitely not least is the bar. There are two basic rules when it comes to a gentleman’s bar. Rule number one: Do not serve drinks in a red solo cup or your regular kitchen glasses, that is just embarrassing! Go and buy appropriate glassware. David Red-man has a very masculine collection that is worth checking out. Rule number two: Do not only have beer in the fridge. I know it might be shocking but there are people that

don’t drink beer, or perhaps would prefer a nice cocktail instead, so please do your guests a favor and have a full bar: liquor, wine, champagne, mixers and a good 18 years old single malt bourbon or scotch. No excuses!

Sometimes it can be hard to let go of things, but as the cave men did thousands of years ago, it is about time to do the same and be-come a 21st Century gentleman.

Ligné Agency takes a step behind the scenes with interior and product designer, Erinn Va-lencich at California Home and Design’s pre-miere showhouse “Small Space Big Style”.

Erinn joined a select handful of her design star contemporaries from the Los Angeles area at the Hollywood Condos to turn an empty 1,400 square foot penthouse into a super functional space filled with design inspiration at every turn. Given the master bedroom and bath, Erinn tackled the challenge of keeping the rest haven feeling spacious yet “sexy and dramatic”.

album, Erinn relied on deep blues for drama and pops of cerise for light charming accents throughout the space. With plenty of natu-ral lighting during the day, the room comes equipped with floor to ceiling walls of win-dows. Hanging black sheers in the space also gives the dweller the opportunity to knock out the intense light and become “enveloped in the deep hues”, says Valencich.

The room has it all - the custom bed and headboard (designed by Erinn) is covered in silver leafing with a mirrored inset, while a murano inspired chandelier hangs from above - every little detail down to rug pattern on the floor give the space a diverse character from the rest of the penthouse. In the bath-room, Erinn chose a bright red faucet that seamlessly blends with the wood grained illu-sion in the tile, - giving it a pristine contem-porary appearance.

The “Small Space Big Style” showhouse will be open until November 18th. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles. Visit the California Home and Design website for more information.

hen Erinn Valencich’s clients wed, it was up to her to transform the husband’s once bachelor pad into a chicly livable space for them to start their married lives in. The newlyweds wanted something soft and neutral with delicate pops of color, and a lot of texture to compliment their easy going Southern California lifestyle.

While Erinn designed most of the furniture for the condo, the sage sofa in the family room was an existing piece owned by the couple, and served as the starting point for the design of the space. She livened up the bookcases by giving them a fresh coat of paint and changing out the doors - which compliment the chinoiserie flair of the sofa’s side tables.

The color palette for the family room was positioned around the embroidered floral fabric Erinn used on the back of the chairs at the game table. The fuschia flowers were just the pop of color the space needed, further accented by the bold print on the pillows. To give a little sparkle, she added a bronze mirror cocktail table from her Erinn V Maison collection.

The bedroom space was kept very neutral and serene, focusing more on layers and texture than color. The subtle leather used to upholster the master bed was done in deep tufting, with the frame finished in a metallic silver leaf. “I chose very subtle traditional rugs to compliment the rooms, without overpowering them with color,” Erinn notes.

The nursery was one of the most fun rooms to design in the space. Erinn started with a wallpaper from Emma & Milton and built the design palette for the room from there. The upholstered daybed with nailhead detailing was custom designed for the space and later made a part of the Erinn V Maison collection. A drum side table with green detailing and mother of pearl accents on the pendant light give unique character to this charming nursery full of light.

The entire condo radiates the youthful elegance for which Erinn is so often sought after, creating the perfect interior for two newlyweds to start their lives together in!

ones) love passion in design when it isn’t diluted by platitudes, disco balls and glitzy packaging. Having a real sense of your

“When submitting projects, please label all images with the room name, and limit the

photos to three per room. If all the images can’t fit in one email, then a link to a yousendit or dropbox is ideal, preferably to a zip file so

we have to only download one link, lessening the chances of missing anything. Include the

location and description of the project, and any interesting details that we may miss from the

picture. Like, is the ceiling lacquered? Are there any collections hiding behind cabinet doors? This betters the chance to make it into a story pitch or scouting meeting right away versus

down the line.”

“My advice to those pitching home-design stories begins with the same comments I make to anybody

pitching anything. Know the publication well before you reach out to the editor. If its design

projects tilt modern and high-end, as ours do, don’t pitch mid-market traditional or dentists’ offices. It also really helps to have some existing images of your project, even if just scouting shots that aren’t

candidates for publication--although, having beautiful unpublished images, shot by a pro who understands the publication’s aesthetic, is a huge

advantage. It not only saves us money, it saves us bother, and so you almost certainly get extra-

serious consideration. Finally, I’d say that all good stories are ultimately stories about people. Even if

the images tout design and art and color and form, the reader will want to know where it all came

from, how it was selected, why it was put together as it was, how it’s used, etc. The answers to those

question are all about human beings. In most cases, photogenic, open homeowners with interesting

stories to tell trump unattractive, reserved homeowners who won’t talk to writers.”

to identify who is best for your client. Take a look at the site(s) you’re sending your press release to ahead of time in order to make sure it’s a good

fit. If in doubt, reach out first to ask the editor what they think about specific types of pitches or ideas, or request more information about their editorial calendar. Often times, they’ll respond and let you

know what they’re looking for.”

“Hold the BS - send us photos and facts! Design editors tend to know what

they like when they see it or, perhaps, when they understand what something

does. You don’t need to put the hard sell on us or tell us that your product is ‘beautiful, awe-inspiring, fabulous or (heaven forbid) innovative’ – we can decide for ourselves – that’s our

job! An objective description with good imagery is refreshing and honest. And if we can actually see or visit the thing,

all the better - I don’t like to write about something based entirely on a press release, I want to experience it -

otherwise, it’s not journalism.”
