Galvanic Corrosion Chart
GOOD - Copper Free Aluminum BETTER - 304 Stainless Steel BEST - 316 Stainless SteelPure aluminum is soft and ductile; strength is achieved by the addition of other elements to produce alloys. These elements include manganese, silicon, iron, zinc, copper and magnesium. Aluminum is most resistant to corrosion when the copper content is reduced to less than 0.4%. This alloy is commonly referred to as copper free aluminum. Additional corrosion resistance can be achieved with the addition of surface finishes, such as electrostatically applied oven-cured polyester powder coating. Aluminum is not recommended for areas exposed to most acids and alkilides.
Steels are referred to as stainless when they inherently resist corrosion. This is achieved by dissolving sufficient chromium in the iron to produce a protective film on the surface. However, even stainless steels can corrode in extremely harsh environments. Nickel significantly improves the general corrosion resistance of stainless steels by promoting passivation. Passivation is the removal of exogenous iron or iron compounds from the metal’s surface. Stainless steels containing at least 8% nickel are referred to as austenitic. Type 304 is the standard of stainless steel and is the most widely used; it is commonly referred to as 18/8 stainless as it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
Molybdenum gives Type 316 stainless steel better overall corrosion resistant properties than Type 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Type 316 stainless steel contains at least 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. It is the standard in the manufacture and handling of food and pharmaceutical products to minimize the potential for metallic contamination.

NOTE: Our alloy selection of Aluminum sheet and castings is based on the best resistance to industrial and marine corrosion. Where additional protection is needed, we can coat any of our materials. Stainless steel can be electro-polished to further enhance its natural corrosion resistance. Brass can be nickel plated. Call the factory for exotic environments.

Complimentary Lighting Design Services.
We can provide both general project estimates as well as detailed calculations, complete with a breakdown of relevant assumptions and a complete luminaire schedule. Layouts utilize IES and other industry standard practices, and take into consideration unique project requirements and client preferences to determine the most cost effective solution. Normal and emergency operation can be simulated, and allowances made for known obstructions. Designs can be performed directly on client’s digital drawings for maximum utility and visual impact.
Life Cycle Economic Analysis.
Can be facilitated by your Pauluhn representative. Included are allowances for initial luminaire install, lamp replacement, general maintenance regimes, power consumption, and other considerations. Contact Pauluhn for assistance.
Pauluhn LumenMax™ Software.
Available on CD for customers who would like to perform their own indoor and outdoor lighting designs. LumenMax includes a basic estimator for quick and easy budgeting and comparison. Pauluhn photometric files are available in standard format for importing into other lighting design packages. Consult Pauluhn for factory assistance with detailed lighting calculations for your specific project.
