Dear delegates,

Well, we hope you are enjoying the session so far. With the first day of teambuilding now over, we hope that you are settled into your committees and are ready to get down to business in committee work.

At times committee work may seem stressful, it may seem like your going in circles and it may seem like one of the most difficult things you've ever done in your lives, but it will all resolve itself and through communication and co-operation you will manage to find a solution to the problem you are tackling.

If you have a show-stoppingly. jaw-droppingly good idea, don't hesitate to share it with your committee.

Remember, the most important thing is not who had the idea in the first place, but the way you worked with it and moulded it into something truly marvellous. That is the true art of an idea.

With this in mind, enjoy committee work - listen to what your fellow delegates have to say, make sure you have your voice heard and be excited about what you will achieve.

Be as bright as a lightbulb!

- Beth

The current economical situation in Italy reflects the fact that the northern part of

the country is much more developed and rich than the southern regions. This

can also be applied on a European level, and it is clear it causes many problems.

For 26 years Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has been stealing children in Uganda and forcing them to join his army. Over those years around 30000 children, both boys and girls, have fallen victims to the Kony’s masterplan on maintaining his political hold in the country. People tend to not notice the things that do not influence them directly. And somehow throughout all these years no one knew – or, maybe, simply didn’t care - about what exactly was happening to the kids. Until now…

Jason Russell, an American film and theater director, choreographer and artist, made a move and founded Invisible Children, Inc. A short 30 minute film was made about the horror of the LRA situation and fundraising for a huge media campaign started - Kony 2012.

The purpose of Kony 2012 was rtto raise awareness of Kony's crimes. And in May 2012 all the big cities in the world were supposed to be covered with placards and stickers, and logos. After it started and the film was presented to the public, people all over the world were horrified by the things they saw. So donations from all the kind hearts began flowing in like a river and hundreds of people went out on the streets demanding the government of USA to do something about Joseph Kony. But as it always happens, after the launching of the project a lot of criticism followed. Some of it was based on existing prejudice concerning African problems, but most was based on facts.

The burning topics around Kony 2012 claim that the funders of Invisible Children have “poor spending practices”. As it said in the blog of Invisible Children, the NGO spends less on “direct services” then it does on transportation and compensation costs. However The Globe and Mail note that despite admitting spending less than one-third of the budget on ‘on-the-ground programs’, they still argue that the mission includes advocacy and raising awareness.

Another issue is that the campaign calls for actual military action without an attempt to accomplish their goal by putting a diplomatic pressure on J. Kony. Some people have already accused the project of neo-colonialism.

All in all, in spite of everything, the one thing that cannot be denied is how strongly Kony 2012 influenced people. For one, thousands and thousands of people from all over the world want the very the same thing – they want the violence to be stopped. No one deserves to be to be treated the way those children are. And no one should have the power to things like Joseph Kony has been doing for over a quarter of century now.

A child has been stolen from his or her home and forced to join an army and do awful, unthinkable things. That sounds like a move scenario, but sadly it isn’t.
