After spending a day at the premises of the Master of the South Gauteng High Court last week I have come

to the conclusion that our there is little possibility of South Africa ever launching a mission into space.

There is equally little chance of our public transport ever running on time again and I can’t imagine that the police service, the post office and the Defence Force will ever again be capable of anything close to efficient, effective operational service while the status quo remains. As for effective judicial administration, well, if the Master of the South Gauteng High Court’s operational efficiency is anything to judge by, I would say that as a country we have to develop a sense of humour.

My late father’s estate was very small – too small for FNB to administer so they abdicated their interest in it and left me to wrap things up. How difficult could this be? Just gather the few supporting documents required to present to the Master along with the will already lodged there by the bank and that should be that. Best to do it in person though, the post being somewhat unreliable these days. Oh boy… if only I had known …

Luckily I know Joburg really well having lived there for much of my life so I found the Master’s offices at 66 Marshall Street easily enough. I even managed to find a parking bay close by which was convenient, but that was the last of the happy accidents. There was a sort of scrum just inside the entrance to this rather austere relic of a former,

more

functional time. The security booth / reception island was under siege by an army of the great unwashed that seemed hell-bent on overrunning the turnstiles and I couldn’t get near the counter to ask where I needed to go to present my case. I was simply swept along by the deluge of humanity, through the turnstiles and disgorged into the heart of darkness where my tribulations began in earnest.

Nothing really works here anymore – no one seems to know where to go or what to do and there are no information boards or officials to help you. So you muddle along with the other lost and bewildered souls…hundreds of them…all trying to find missing documents, or so it seemed. Some of the saddest sights were the widows of whom there appeared to be many – frail women in badly worn clothes looking dazed and dishevelled, trying to make sense of the madness. As if their loss isn’t enough to cope with, now they have a massive struggle to access what meagre resources might have been left to them. There were legal types in the crowd too and clerks, or what the fraternity refer to as “runners”. They seem to know their way around this chaos and in between hustling for their own case files, they offered the odd bit of information that led me to the fifth floor and another scrum.

This one was smaller and less odiferous because this is where you go if you actually have a valid will to work with. As it happens, I didn’t actually have the will because it had been lodged here by the bank several weeks earlier and it had subsequently disappeared. So, after following several dead ends, I was eventually directed down another corridor at the end of which I found an even smaller gathering waiting for the oracle called Grace…she who must smile upon you kindly if you are ever to find your

missing documents in the chaos of paperwork that lies in random piles on the floors of the many offices I had visited so far on this quest.

Grace eventually came up trumps – miraculously she found the file that I was looking for and sent me back along the corridor, this time to a row of chairs outside the office of a man named Silas. My interview with Silas, which came after a lengthy wait, was short and to the point. I was still missing some documents which I would now have to go and hunt down. He explained that if I was able to do this within the next week or so, he would keep my file in one of the piles on the floor instead of returning it to the “system” where it would possibly disappear. So, buoyed with hope that I might eventually get a result, I left the chaos behind me and returned to the relative Utopia of the Republic of Life & Style.

One thing that struck me through this entire exercise is how most of the people I came into contact with did their best to try to help and, despite the chaos, I almost enjoyed the experience. There are good people here doing their best to cope in a situation that is generally beyond them. What we need is better leadership and I have a feeling that it won’t be long before that happens. There’s too much at stake for the circus to continue. Here’s hoping!

ten Points

Crime Alert

There is an alarming increase in nocturnal criminal activity in the suburbs of the greater Ballito region and residents are urged to take extra precautions to protect themselves and their property.

While an official “no comment” position is to be expected from the security cluster, anecdotal evidence is mounting up significantly indicating that at least one, but probably more gangs are operating here at present. One modus operandi is to hit the suburbs late at night or in the early hours of the morning in motor vehicles and drop off youngsters small enough to negotiate physical barriers and beams. Once inside, they are quick to identify items of value – laptops and cell phones are high on the list – and away they go.

More sinister are the armed invasions – these too are on the increase. Be warned. Lock doors, gates and barrier protection. Arm your security system, alert your neighbours to suspicious activity and keep vigilant. We have found the SAPS extremely professional in their response to criminal activity locally but they are under resourced in the face of this current escalation. Support your local neighbourhood watch, Community Policing Forum and generally tighten up on your personal security arrangements. The harder you make it for criminals to operate here, the more likely they are to make mistakes…and then we can talk!

Trust. trust is the key to everything when

appointing someone to assist you in dealing with what is usually your single biggest asset. Deciding who to trust is becoming more difficult these days, where everyone seems to be jumping on the “quick money” band-wagon.

Many estate agents in South Africa see the real estate industry as simply a method to make quick money. These agents may even have had some success because when things go right – the industry is not complicated to understand and navigate.

It is when things do not go as expected that experience and knowledge (as well as qualification, etc) become so critical that they can save or cost you thousands.

Listed below are eleven questions you should get answers to before you hire a Real Estate Agent or Agency. Make sure that you question your prospective agency before signing any mandates with them! What makes this agent different?

Each agency will have a slightly different spin on what makes them different to the others in the area. For some it will be a greater advertising span or campaign or some a lower commission rate. Understand what things your agent will do differently from other agents. Find a response that makes sense to you directly. What is the agent’s track record and reputation in the marketplace?

Success in real estate can quite easily be measured by selling homes. How many homes your prospective estate agent has sold recently is a quick and easy way to measure how efficiently they will sell your home. The trick here is to gain a good understanding of how your agent will perform for you against the other estate agents in your area. What is the agent’s marketing plans for your home?

Comparing the marketing plans and strategies of real estate agencies is another way to set them apart from the competition. How visible your house will be to potential buyers is determined by how the agent you appoint will market it. Make sure that your agent includes (at least) the following marketing avenues:

*Newspaper advertising*Sign boards*Internet advertisingHaving an agent that is linked to a

larger group can be of great benefit as the buyer will gain the trust associated with the brand instead of just with the agent directly. What has the agency (not necessarily the agent) sold in your area?

Knowledge of a specific area is critical to an estate agent who is going to be able to sell your home fast and for the best possible price. With this in mind, ask how many homes have been sold by the Agency in your area. If the number is small, you may need to assess whether the agent can truly assist you with pricing your house correctly or has the insight needed to sell in your area.

What does the agent value my home at, and how did they arrive at that figure?

In South Africa, most real estate agents will do a free evaluation of your house. It is important to understand not only the value the agent gives to your house, but also what information they used to calculate its value. The agent who has done their homework correctly should be able to base your evaluation on the trends of similar properties sold in your area in the last few months.Ask for references.

All agents will try to display themselves in the best possible light. Ask the agent for a few clients who have sold in the last few months that you can contact directly as a reference. While talking to the new owners, be sure to ask them the following:1.How did the agent perform?2.Did they get the price they expected for their home?3.Did the marketing strategies used work quickly?4.How long was the house on the market and why?5.What promises were made and how did the agent deliver on them?6.Were there any difficulties in the process and how did the agent assist you to deal with them? When the agent sells a home, how close on average is the list price to the sale price?

This will assist you in determining your agent’s ability to negotiate on your behalf. Most agents will give you two figures when doing your assessment, a list price and a probable sale price. Make sure that the average sale price is greater or equal to the probable sale price. If it is lower, use another agency. How long does it take the agent to sell homes on average?

If an agent takes a long time to sell a home, it could be an indication that the evaluation was not done correctly and that the price was too high in the current market. You need an agent that can sell your home fast, at the highest possible price.Does the agent have a data base of buyers?

A number of estate agents try to match a buyer’s database with their seller’s database. This helps to sell the house quickly as the agent already has an understanding of the buyer’s requirements. Are all agents working for the agency qualified?

It is now a legal necessity for agents to be qualified and registered with The Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB). Make sure that the agent dealing with your property has the correct information and qualifications to do so, or you may find your sale at risk.If you are unhappy with the real estate agent appointed, what happens?

Make sure that the mandate is in your best interests. Be wary of agents who try to lock you into a lengthy mandate which they can get out of but you can’t. Make sure that the contract stipulates how they will market your home and how much time and money they will spend on the marketing for the duration of the contract.

NO JOB IS TOO SMALL OR TOO BIG!

THIS myth I think is probably the most contentious one out there.

I always use the doctor’s consultation story to explain : “when you go to the doctor, you pay him (or her) for their expertise, they use their knowledge to determine what the problem might be and prescribe medication to fix the problem, sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don’t, sometimes the medication works, sometimes it doesn’t. Do you get your money back? NO...

This is generally what I tell people who are reluctant to pay a design fee but thankfully most of my clients see the value, and don’t have a problem with it. A professional designer knows

that he or she needs to be guided by their clients. Obviously the client is not expected to do the entire design (otherwise you wouldn’t need our services). What I am saying is that we will need to determine how the space is going to be used, and what style preference the client has and from this, a design concept is born.

In an ongoing process the design evolves into what the client wants and needs, where the designer constantly applies their design knowledge and skill. At my company we include two revisions in the design fee; this allows the client to change the design twice without having to pay additional design fees. More times than not if the client

briefs the designer correctly, the initial concept will be correct with a few minor changes, which are generally personal preferences. There is amazing technology that allows us to prepare 3D pictures of the spaces for clients that are not able to envisage the final look from a plan and basic presentation, again the client should be asked if they require this additional service before the designer quotes the client for the design. At the end of the day communication is imperative, and both parties need to be actively involved in the design process - as mentioned in a previous article, “there should be NO

surprises”. So yes, you do still have to pay for the design, but you don’t have to implement it. Depending on certain circumstances each project and client is different, and working with a designer with integrity is a bonus, and generally they will continue the process until it is correct (within reason of course).

So working with a professional, or selecting a specific designer that has references or a portfolio, is the route to follow to ensure you do not end up with a design that you do not like.

Victory for the Bluefin tuna campaign

AtlAntic fish numbers Are on the rise for the first time in A DecADe

A celebrity-backed campaign to keep bluefin tuna off dinner plates and in the sea is reaping

environmental rewards.Scientists claim that the endangered

fish population is showing signs of recovery, but warn there is still much to do to preserve the species for future generations.

Populations of the tuna remain at historically low levels, but the numbers of Atlantic bluefin are rising for the first time in decades.

The gourmet fish fell victim to over fishing and, in a bid to save it, celebrities including Sienna Miller, Elle Macpherson and Stephen Fry, called for an end to the practice, with Emilia Fox and Terry Gilliam going so far as to pose naked with fish to grab attention for the sustainable fishing campaign.

Earlier this week, the scientific committee for the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) met in Madrid, Spain to assess the situation of the bluefin tuna in the East Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

In 2009, the commission reported that stocks had declined by 72 per cent in the Eastern Atlantic, and 82 per cent in the west over 40 years.

Now, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has said the fish is ‘no longer at risk of collapse’.

Dr Sergi Tudela, Head of Fisheries at WWF Mediterranean, said: ‘In spite of the high uncertainties surrounding the assessment, one thing appears clear today: the stock is no longer at risk of collapse, and this is a direct result of the current recovery plan.

‘However, strong concerns remain, particularly regarding the

traceability of the fish.’‘We might be very

close to what would be a resounding success in the history of fisheries, the dream of a

sustainable bluefin tuna fishery in the

Eastern Mediterranean and the Atlantic - let’s

hope the lessons of the past have been fully learned and that - at least this time - history doesn’t repeat itself.’

There are two main stocks of Bluefin tuna.

The larger of the two is in the Eastern Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea and the smaller lies in the western part of the ocean such as the Gulf of Mexico.

The most dramatic signs of a recovery have been seen in the eastern waters of the Atlantic.

CANTILEVER CARPORTS

8 PM. At that point there are 25,000 cars parked in the parking lot! How long would it take you to locate your car? It would be as quick as locating one of the teenage “cast members” who would take out a handheld terminal and after you told him/her of your arrival time that morning they would say something like “at 8:30 AM we were parking cars in Goofy Zone C, rows 6,7,8,9 and 10. You get on this cart, we’ll find your car!”

My point being… Disneyland solves problems quickly and effectively. If it is “Mickey Mouse” for Disneyland to get it right, how are you solving problems for your clients? One way is to have an impactful online presence that answers these questions: 1. Am i getting an ooohhh moment instead of an oh moment?2. Is there anything in this for me?3. can i trust this person? (beginning of a sale)4. Does this person have my best interests at heart? (beginning of a relationship)

Think of your website as being the “showroom” of your business that is the ultimate branding magnet in befriending, intriguing and attracting new business. It gives you the power to be credible in your market place. When you are credible, backed by a powerful brand, the sky is the limit. Position your business via your website to showcase how you solve your client’s most pressing problems, quicker, cheaper or more comprehensively than any of your competitors.

If your business offers an improvement of what your clients currently have you will more easily be able to create a need or demand for what you offer. To do this, your online branding should be broken down into these components:•Personal branding•company branding•brand association•brand innovation •brand credibility

Building a powerful online presence is vital in your business. It must have originality, relevance and must touch

the core of your clients. It must be cutting edge, diverse and ideally have a global aspect to it. These things combined make people sit up, pay attention and ultimately take action.

THe rains of the past two weeks have been an absolute Godsend.

One can almost hear the plants gulping down the moisture

as it falls from the skies. Folk rush into the Nursery with a determination to get that lawn green again and get some colour in the garden. May I remind you that there are only 11 weeks to Christmas and 12 weeks to New Year! Scary, isn’t it. May I also remind you that there is no point in trying to get your garden into shape a few days before the Festive season? The time to start is now! Right now! In fact, this week-end. Make notes of areas that need urgent attention. Decide where your focal points are. Are your containers in good shape? And remember the value of using your cell phone to take pictures and bring these along to the Nursery so that we are all on the same page and can assist you in turning your garden into a showpiece this summer.

Good gardening is all about the combination of contrasting textures, so we invite you to visit and have some fun, grouping plants and getting a good idea of what you can achieve. If your hanging baskets are looking tatty, don’t hesitate to bring them along and they can be re-planted with any number of suitable plants.

Daily, I deal with folk whose lawns are a disaster and when I ask when they last fed them, the answer is invariably the spring of 2013. We must understand that plants are living organisms in the same way as we are. They need light, water and food in balanced quantities and to neglect any one of these elements is to the detriment of your garden. Water is not food and an excess is damaging. Now I can just hear you say that you will plant Indigenous plants and all will be well. This has to be the biggest load of nonsense that was ever bandied about! You will possibly have many different climatic conditions in your garden. Extreme

shade; bright sun; very dry areas or very damp areas and it makes absolutely no difference whether the plants come from Ballito or Budapest, if they are suited to your garden then they are the right thing for that situation. Bird attracting plants attract birds; butterfly attracting plants attract butterflies; bees feed on nectar and they are not xenophobic. How should we

deal with the environment? By keeping your soil and plants in tip top condition with the addition of compost, mulches and nutrients and by resisting the use of chemicals. I am absolutely horrified when I see Chlorpirifos (Dursban) available on shelves. This chemical has been banned for garden use for years because of its toxicity and does not breakdown in the soil. We have to learn to live alongside Nature for the sake of the environment.

So, dear Friends, get out into your garden, soothe your soul; get close to your Creator and start preparing for the Festive season.

NATASHA bARNES GRANDE DIPLOME CORDON bLEu COOKERY SILWOOD KITCHENS

LoVe him or hate him Chairman Mao changed the face of China. This eccentric personality denied his committed comrade’s access to the finer things in life, especially food. Yet all the while he kicked back and enjoyed the trappings of capitalism. His fondness for hot and spicy food was well

known, so much so that this dish was eventually named after him. Tip: Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese all make a commercial chilli sauce that can

be substituted in this recipe, however, do not use sweet Thai chilli sauce. Invest in a wok if you are going to do a great deal of Asian cooking. Some Chairman Mao chicken recipes call for tomato sauce, using a chilli tomato sauce would suffice.

Rice wine is made from fermented rice and used for both cooking and drinking. A good medium dry sherry can be substituted.

Sichuan peppercorns are unique to the province of Szechuan, responsible for one of China's most fiery cuisines. The peppercorn is shaped like a flower and is not hot like black pepper but rather sweet spicy, releasing flavour when deep-fried. Sichuan peppercorns make up one of the spices in “Five Spice Powder” and can be purchased at any speciality food store or large supermarket.

ChAIRmAN mAO’S ChICKEN “you can't be a revolutionary if you don't eat chilies” (Chairman Mao)

mEThOD: Combine the marinade ingredients in a small bowl, mix

well. Add the chicken and leave to stand for 30 minutes. Heat a little peanut oil in a wok. Stir fry the spring onions, ginger, garlic, chillies and Sichuan peppercorns over moderate heat. Remove the onions from the wok and set aside. Turn up the heat slightly, add a splash of peanut oil and stir fry the chicken, returning the onions to the wok as this chicken starts to turn white. Add the water, chilli sauce or paste, rice wine or sherry, sugar and salt. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on high or until mixture starts to thicken slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning. Stir in the peanuts. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter and serve at once.

My mom and I travelled to China for her 60th birthday and found ourselves in a beautiful family run hotel on the banks of the

tranquil li river near Gullian. Nobody spoke any English and the menu had a few regular favourites hastily scribbled in shorthand. Amongst its worn pages was the promise of Li River sweet & sour pork, which turned out to be the single most memorable Chinese dish I've

ever eaten. The kitchen was hidden from view at the end of the hallway by red velvet curtain that doubled up as a bedspread. Inside was nothing more than a few utensils and an enormous wok large enough to Cook a pig!! A tiny girl sat behind the steaming mass of oil and steel

watching me precariously as I jotted down the recipe.

Tip: What is the difference between light and dark Soy Sauce? The light is used with chicken or fish or where the colour of the dish must be preserved. Soy sauce will keep indefinitely and does not need to be stored in the fridge.

INgREDIENTS25ml (11/2 tablespoons) corn flour (Maizena)15ml (1 tablespoon)) dark Soy sauce15ml (1 tablespoon) Rice wine or medium dry sherry440g Can pineapple rings, or pieces, juice reserved500g Pork, cut into bite size pieces sAuce:

25ml (11/2 tablespoons) corn flour (Maizena)30ml (2 tablespoons) Rice wine or medium dry sherry30ml (2 tablespoons) Brown sugar15ml (2 tablespoons) light soy sauce45ml (3 tablespoons) tomato sauce15ml -30ml (1 – 2 tablespoons) peanut or canola oil1 large red or yellow pepper, seeded and chopped125ml (½ cup) waterPinch of salt to taste1 egg, lightly beaten

mEThOD: Mix together the corn flour, dark soy sauce

and rice wine or sherry. Add 15ml (1 tablespoon) of the pineapple juice, stir to dissolved and add the pork. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes.

Chop the pineapple slices into equal bite-size pieces if you are using rings. Mix the corn flour to a smooth paste using a little of the pineapple juice, this is done to prevent lumps, then add the remaining juice, rice wine or sherry, sugar, Soy sauce and tomato sauce. Stir well to combine.

Heat a little of the oil in the wok and stir fry the red or yellow pepper until soft, pour in the corn flour mixture and water. Bring to the boil stirring continuously until thick and glossy. Reduce heat, add the pineapple pieces. Cook through. Transfer the sauce to a separate bowl.

Give the wok a good clean wipe and heat a little more oil until hot but not smoking.

Tip the marinated pork into the beaten egg, use a fork to drop a few pieces at a time into the hot oil and stir fry the pork in batches until golden brown, about two minutes. Return the Pineapple sauce to the wok with the pork and heat through until bubbling. Transfer to a serving platter. Serve with rice.

They are hated by many as an eyesore on the countryside.

But conventional wind farms may one day become a

thing of the past after scientists trialled turbines which can be flown in the sky like kites.

The turbines, which are being developed by Google, would be tethered 300 metres above ground and would have wings to help them stay air bound.

Floating at high altitudes, they would be powered by higher wind speeds and therefore could increase the amount of energy produced.

Peter Fitzgerald, Google’s UK sales director, said the turbines could also save on construction costs.

Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, he said the turbines could spell a solution to the world’s energy problems.

He said: ‘It can make a big difference when it comes to energy.

‘It is tethered, has wings and if you go to high altitude flying around bringing energy. ‘You have to spend a lot of money on steel and concrete to build these massive turbines and you can only do that in about 15 per cent of the world where the wind is fast enough.’

With the tethered turbines, he added, you could use them on ‘double the amount of land’.

He admitted: ‘It’s kind of out there.’The turbines are being developed

as part of the company’s Google X department.

It acquired Makani, the company originally trialling the technology, last year.

Engineers say the ‘energy kite’ has the potential to generate 50 per cent more energy while eliminating 90 per cent of the materials used and for half the cost

of conventional wind turbine.

Google X is also working on a number of other pioneering gadgets, including a contact lenses for people with diabetes which can measure the wearer’s glucose levels.

Mr Fitzgerald also spoke about Google’s Project Loon, in which it aims to deliver broadband to very rural areas.

The concept involves flying balloons equipped with its internet technology at high altitude.

He said the balloons would use ‘algorithms

to try to figure out how to ride wind currents.’

He added: ‘There are so many parts of the world where if you put broadband in it is so expensive and it will take it forever.

‘But if you use balloons it is low cost and you can get hundreds of millions of people on the internet.’

By the time the rings

are safely stashed away, the fairy-

tale venue booked and the dress of your dreams is hanging in your cupboard, you may well be excused for thinking that your wedding prep is done and dusted – and your dwindling budget will doubtless be broadcasting the same message! but, as Grandma used to say, ‘the devil is in the detail’ and it is the little things that transform your Big Day from merely memorable to completely unforgettable.

Just as the setting enhances the gemstone in a piece of fine jewellery, so should accessories add the finishing touch to a beautiful ensemble – and your hair is no exception. It is no coincidence that a woman’s hair is called her crowning glory; the right hair style will make you feel like a princess as you glide down the aisle, poised and prepared for this new season in your life.

But what IS the right style? Before you lose any beauty sleep over your choice of coiffure, here are a few basic guidelines to help you.

Unless you are going bohemian or planning to make a splash in a daring mini-dress, your wedding gown will be

floor-length, which calls for a certain elegance in your coiffure. This does not mean that you have to wear a classic up-style but the golden rule is to never allow your hair to hang down around your face. Softly-hanging hairstyles can look good but always lift the sides away from your face so that your hair, be it wavy, sleek or curled, forms an elegant frame for your face.

Your hair should complement your dress, so take the design of your wedding gown into consideration when choosing your hair-style. A classic gown will be beautifully offset by sleek, classic hair, while dramatic dresses call for a more creative coiffure. And if you are a natural or romantic style personality and have chosen a gown to reflect that, softly-flowing hair will perfect your look.

Your wedding day should be one that you will remember with fond memories and with a little fashion foresight, you will have no regrets when you look back at your wedding photos in years to come!

Happy styling!

JOHAN DORfLING - PERSONAL TRAINER

Functional training

WeigHt training

So what is the low down on functional

training and is it just another fad? Let me put it to you this way: Weight training has evolved!

functional training is a way of training that actually makes you do everyday activities better. It's a way of exercise that actually makes you more mobile and stronger! Imagine having to depend on other people to do the moving and lifting for you!

It always amazes me how often people shy away from simple activities "because they have a bad something or other". Poor excuse- inactivity is a killer, guys!

functional training has its origins in rehabilitation. What's the point of being able to bench press a 100 kg but you can't turn around to reach the toilet paper without putting your back out?

Way before fitness and weight loss, priority number one for all personal trainers should be to keep clients injury free.

Weight training is what most people consider training at a gym is all about and why some use it as a perfect excuse to avoid exercise.

news flash! You don't have to push heavy weights to enjoy the benefits of strength training!

I often use this method when training clients who tell me that they don't want to do weights because they build muscle very easily. I wish I built muscle that easily! So instead of using dumbbells and barbells, I use their own body's weight, ropes, medicine balls, steps etc. to give them all the benefits of weight training in a functional training workout. End result? Stronger, leaner bodies that can move freely without injury and no watermelons under the arms!

Sometimes functional training involves using dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells! This does not make it "weight training" and you will not wake up the next morning with huge muscles that you cannot get rid of or that will turn into fat.

In 2009 research was conducted and published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research which compared functional training to fixed variable training techniques ( plate loaded gym machines ) , this was considered the first research of its type comparing the two methods of strength

training. Results of the study showed very

substantial gains and benefits in the functional training group over fixed training equipment. Functional users had a 58% greater increase in strength over the fixed-form group. The improvement in balance were 196% higher over fixed and reported an overall decrease in joint pain by 30%.

How do I do functIonal traInIng?

Start learning how to do your basic primal movements with proper technique. These movements are. Push, pull, bend, twist, squat and lunge!

Just because an overhead barbell squat is a functional exercise does not make it necessarily right for Aunt Betty. Every person should have a functional movement screening test to measure their capabilities and start training accordingly. Just because the workout of the day that Aunt Betty downloaded of the functional training website includes 10 sets of hill sprints does not mean it’s right for her! Your functional training program should be 100% designed for you to enable you to move better and without injury. Sometimes this means avoiding the hill sprints and overhead squats and doing other functional exercises that will progress you to the workout of the day.

You will know that you are training functionally well when you can move like a 20 year old at 70!

live happily ever active!

Pet Cat That Is Now Influencing Her Much-Acclaimed Painting

• Iris Grace Halmshaw, five, created a buzz in the art world at three years old• A private collector bought two of her original works for £1,500 each • Autistic youngster struggled to speak as other children unnerved her• But her pet cat Thula has relieved her isolation and they are inseparable• Her parents noticed Iris adding brush strokes which resemble a cat's eyes

For iris Grace halmshaw, the world was a lonely place.

The autistic five-year-old struggles to speak, is unnerved by other children and is frequently thrown into panic by the world around her.

She fills her days with painting, and is so talented that her works sell for as much as £1,500.

But nothing could quite relieve her isolation. Until, that is, a cat called Thula came along.

The pair are now inseparable – and Iris's parents credit the gentle Maine Coon with helping their little girl become more tactile and affectionate, as well as influencing her already much-acclaimed works of art.

The home-educated youngster has been producing astonishing Monet-style landscapes since she was three, when mother Arabella Carter-Johnson devised art sessions to help her with her daughter's concentration and speech.

But since Thula arrived, Miss Carter-Johnson and her husband Peter-Jon Halmshaw say they have noticed Iris adding brush strokes which resemble a cat's eyes or nose.

Initially, they thought it was just a coincidence, but now believe Iris is expressing her love for Thula through her painting.

'When Iris is painting, Thula is told by her to 'sit cat' if she jumps up on to the table,' said Miss Carter-Johnson. 'She stays there watching Iris with great interest, occasionally wanting to

play with the brushes, but mostly just patiently watching.'

And the pair's bond doesn't end there. Thula is at Iris's side for every part of her life, right down to her bath times, when she will even share a shampoo and soak. When the family go out in the car, Thula will sit on Iris's lap, and she is more than happy to don her red harness and go for a walk on her lead.

The pair's closeness is having an effect on Iris's relationships with others, too, and her parents find it easier to encourage her to speak when Thula is around.

After researching the benefits of animal therapy for autistic children the couple had tried introducing Iris to horses, dogs and even other cats with no success – but everything fell into place when Thula came to live with the family in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, in February. Within weeks, the kitten was helping to soothe the little girl in times of stress.

Miss Carter-Johnson, 33, said: 'Ever since we came home with this precious, magical kitten, she has been casting a spell over Iris. It was as if they were old friends from the day they met.

'Thanks to Thula, new doorways to communication and emotions are opening and Iris is happier than ever before.

Inseparable: Iris's parents credit the gentle Maine Coon with helping their little girl become more tactile

and affectionate

South AfricAn driving conditions can vary considerably which possibly explains the popularity of

the cross-over suV options that many car manufacturers have introduced to their ranges. Peugeot has just entered the fray with the all-new 2008.

The 2008, urban crossover, based on the same platform as the 208 compact hatchback, was launched in Europe during 2013 and has found 100 000 satisfied customers in less than a year. It offers decent ground clearance, short overhangs, an aerodynamic shape, smooth surfaces and a practical, roomy interior.

In South Africa the 2008 Allure comes fully loaded with two-zone aircon, cruise control, height and reach steering-wheel adjustment, satnav and trip data computer, auto headlights and wipers, fog lights and multi-function steering wheel.

An 18cm, full-colour, touch screen is located centrally on the facia, directly above the aircon controls. The display gives access to the 2008’s intuitive infotainment system that includes satnav, Bluetooth phone connection and audio streaming, USB and auxiliary audio inputs, a trip computer and an FM/AM receiver with multiple loudspeakers.

There are also LED's, a decent set of 17” alloy rims, roof bars, drive-away locking (always a reassuring feature that

moms like), auto central locking, IsoFix child-seat anchors and rear parking sensors.

Rear accommodation is spacious enough and the wide-opening tail hatch provides convenient access to a 360-litre cargo volume. Even more impressive: the way the split rear seat folds away completely to create a flat-floored cargo area that easily accommodates large, unwieldy objects. From mountain bikes to hiking gear, the 2008 will meet its owner's lifestyle expectations.

Other safety features are anti-lock brakes with electronic fluid pressure distribution, driver, passenger and curtain airbags, hill-start assistance and lights that stay on while you reach your front door.

Performance from the 88kW/160Nm 1.6, quad-valve engine with “intelligent” variable valve timing is exciting, although it can be quite thirsty if you give it horns…

Drive is to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission on offer at launch. Peugeot’s Grip Control system optimises the 2008’s traction for various road conditions: normal, snow, all-terrain and sand, with normal being the default.

Peugeot knows a thing or two about suspension set-ups and in the 2008 combined superior torsional rigidity

with the refinement and response of an independent front suspension, and a fine-tuned, space-saving, torsion beam axle.

Its weight of 1080kg helps to contribute to, according to the automaker, a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9.5sec and top speed of 196km/h.

The 2008 Allure costs

R269 900 and comes with Peugeot's Premium Plan - a three-year or 100 000km warranty and five-year or 60 000km maintenance plan.

I really loved driving it and I am sure that you will too.

lexuS is one to Watch Says car Magazine

LexUS was selected as the “The Company to Watch” in CAR Magazine’s pres-tigious 2014 annual car

awards, a celebration of automotive excellence, which was held at the Campus in Fourways recently.

According to CAR’s Editor, Steve Smith, “there’s a revolution happening at Lexus. It started with the GS, gained momentum with the IS and continues with the gorgeous RC F Coupe. We’re excited to see the next step in the Lexus reinvention.”

Justin Ryan, General Manager of Lexus South Africa, is justifi-ably proud of this accolade: “To be acknowledged in this way is a great reward for Lexus. It reaffirms the qualities that have always been at the heart of our brand – luxury, refine-ment and technical innovation – but, more importantly, it shows just how successfully we’re evolving Lexus dynamically with each new model we introduce.”

While there’s an obvious buzz around forthcoming models like

the RC and RC F Coupe (due in SA towards the end of the year), Lexus has not been resting on its laurels. The stalwart of the Lexus range the sporty-yet-practical RX has come in for a spot 2014 rejuvenation.

Rx 350 ex In 2012, the popular RX range

received the new Lexus corporate identity and signature spindle grille. For 2014, the RX has been refreshed even further with a new Appearance Pack that is now standard on the RX 350 EX model. This pack comprises a re-designed bumper with larger air intakes to boost the muscularity of the front view.

Other changes include new 19-inch alloys (as opposed to the 18-inch units on the outgoing model), as well as LED-type front fog lamps. For the RX 450h SE, the latest upgrade includes the LED interior lighting package as well as the adoption of the Integrated Sport Driving system which enables the driver to tune the Drive Mode Select to Eco, Normal or Sport settings.
