Our Sunday Growth Groups offer a variety of oppor-tunities for you to deepen your understanding of the Scriptures and how to live life with God 24/7/365. All of our groups meet from 10:00-10:45, and are open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Unlocking The Bible Story–Library—This study will take us through the whole of the Bi-ble, and show us how it all fits together. It will also introduce us to the major themes of the Bible, and help us understand the Bible's vocabulary. We will also see how the entire Bible points to Jesus Christ and how He is the focal point of the whole story.

Faith Lessons From The Promised Land–Room 109—Travel to Israel and radically change your understanding of the Scriptures. Wet your feet in the Jordan River and impact the cul-ture with life-giving water. Cleanse the land by confronting evil and using the tools of socie-ty to redeem your world for God. In this study series, historian and teacher Ray Vander Laan will show us (via DVD) how God guided His people to a specific place - the Promised Land - to impact the world both in ancient times and today.

Genesis: Let’s Explore The Basics of Our Faith–Room 102—Where do I begin? Ask most Christians what book of the Bible they would recommend reading first, and 99% will tell you to begin with the Gospel of John. This book was written, “… that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31).

The Book Of 1 Peter–Room 104—Many are preaching a gospel that lacks clarity and sub-stance. People are told to "invite Jesus into their heart" or simply to "follow Christ" without understanding the meaning of his death and resurrection. We need to immerse ourselves in Scripture through diligent study and thoughtful reflection. Only when the Gospel grips us will we realize why "it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes" (Rom 1:16).

The Wired Word–Room 115—Explore a topic drawn from the week’s headlines, and dis-cuss Scriptural applications.

Parkway Presbyterian Preschool & Kindergarten

About Our School . . .

Our school is a “School of Excellence”. We are certi-

fied through the North Georgia Preschool/Kindergarten

Association. This is our schools 15th year serving God’s

children. We have programs for children 2 years old by

September 1st –Kindergarten. We currently have open-

ings in our five day four year old program and 3 openings

in our half day kindergarten.

The staff are CPR and First Aid trained. Every staff

member receives at least ten training hours in Early

Childhood classes every school year. Many of our staff

hold teaching degrees and have several years of teach-

ing experience. All of our classrooms have 2 teachers

per room. We offer Chapel, Spanish, Music and Move-

ment, and Lunch Bunch.

Our preschool also collects Campbell

Soup labels. You can find these labels on any Campbell food

item. Just remove it from the can and drop it in the collection

container by the back lower door of the church.

To the men of Parkway, before we were even born, our Father planted the seed in good soil so as to produce good men. He is the Vinedresser, and we are the branches of his vine. John 15:4 says “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” So we invite the men of Parkway whether a new branch or a mature branch to a healthy discussion about our walk in the light as we continue to grow and produce good fruit, to gods glory as mentioned in Galatians 5:22 - 24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self- control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Our call for this is from Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens an-

other.

A Stephen Ministry Story: Barnabas and Mark

Barnabas boldly proclaimed God's Word throughout the Roman Empire at the same time that Paul did. Though he appears in the New Testament a number of times, we know much less about Barnabas than we do Paul, perhaps because he wasn't the prolific writer Paul was.

What we do know is that he was an encourager. In fact, his name means "the son of encouragement." And while we might call Stephen the first Stephen Minister (Acts 6), Barnabas could appropriately be con-sidered the second. He had all the characteristics of a Stephen Minister: full of faith, mercy, patience, en-couragement, and compassion. He was probably the ideal companion to travel with on a long missionary journey in a potentially hostile land.

Barnabas' biggest contribution to the Christian church, however, isn't a sermon he preached or an epis-tle he wrote. It may simply have been his role as an encourager and as a "Stephen Minister" to his young cousin Mark.

Acts 15:36-41 recounts the planning of Paul's second missionary journey. It begins with a sharp disa-greement between Paul and Barnabas over whether to take Mark on the journey. Paul is strongly against it, citing an earlier journey to Pamphylia in which Mark for some reason had abandoned them (Acts 13:13). The details are sketchy, but it apparently was enough for Paul to lose trust in Mark as a faithful dependable missionary companion.

But Barnabas assertively stood up for Mark, which may not have been easy to do against Paul. He looked past Mark's flaws and had confidence that Mark was a man he could trust on such an important mission. Paul and Barnabas resolved the incident by going on separate missionary journeys: Paul and Silas to Syria and Cilicia, and Barnabas and Mark to Cyprus. Barnabas' encouragement for and patience with Mark likely had a significant positive impact on Mark's self-image and future as an apostle. We later learn that Barnabas' confidence in Mark was justified, because Mark even earns his way back into Paul's favor (2 Timothy 4:11).

What would have happened to Mark had Barnabas not stood by his side despite an earlier failing? Would Mark have had the opportunity later to redeem himself and reestablish his reputation? Or would he simply have drifted away, a failed disciple? We can only guess. What we do know is that because Barna-bas had faith that a young man could overcome an earlier mistake or misjudgment, the young church was blessed with two missionary journeys instead of one—and we have the Gospel of Mark.

Have you had a Barnabas in your life? Did someone encourage and show faith in you when all others doubted? How can you be a Barnabas to someone this week, believing in him or her despite earlier mis-judgments or mistakes?

Stephen Ministry is a ministry of encouragement. A Stephen Minister, like Barnabas, maintains faith and confidence that someone can overcome adversity and reach their God-given potential. The payoff for such confidence can be astounding. Just ask Barnabas or Mark.

The Role of a Deacon

How Can Your Deacon be of Help to You?

Effective deacons lead by encouraging, motivating, and serving others. Acts 6:5

The office of deacon as set for the in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example

of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love,

sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office. It is the duty of deacons, first of all,

to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within

and beyond the community of faith. G-6.401-G-6.402

Visiting with you to “get acquainted”. You should always feel comfortable in calling on your Deacon

during any illness or at a time of sorrow. Get to know each other before any need arises.

Rejoicing with you and your family. Sharing your special moments can increase your joy. Let your

Deacon know what is going on in your life.

Being your friend. You can count on your Deacon to listen to your troubles and concerns in confidence.

It is comforting to know that someone is willing to be there to share your burdens or listen to interesting plans

you might have.

Giving support in a time of crisis. Allow your Deacon to know the difficulties you are facing whether this

is financial, marital, loneliness, health or an imminent death. Listening is a special privilege in a Deacon’s min-

istry to you.

Helping to find answers to questions about faith or our church with its theme of Connect, Grow and

Serve. You have a personal resource you can turn to – your Deacon. It is better to voice your questions re-

garding your spiritual life or your concerns about the activities of the church so your Deacon can help clarify and

encourage you as a part of the body of Christ at Parkway.

Guiding you to have a closer relationship with members of the church through fellowship. As you

connect with God in the worship services, you also grow spiritually through being a part of smaller groups. Fel-

lowship is offered through Wednesday night meals, Bible Studies mid-week and Sundays, and any number of

special interests groups. Find a place that suits you and soon you will put names to faces and share more easi-

ly.

Finding ways to serve within the church. Your Deacon, as a leader in various ministries, is familiar with
