Volume 2 July 14, 2016 Letter from the Pastor There are many things to write about in this week’s newsletter concerning the life of our congregation and our world, however, realizing that space is limited I will highlight just a few. First, it is with sadness as well as deep gratitude for her years of faithful service that we will soon be saying goodbye to our church communications director, Melanie Barger . Melanie has accepted a new professional opportunity here on the island that she is very excited about. The good news is that although she won’t be in the church office on weekdays, we will continue to see Melanie regularly as an active member of the church! We wish Melanie all the best in her new position and are grateful that she has agreed to continue helping out on a temporary basis as we begin a search for her replacement. Next week (July 17-22) we will welcome about ten youth from the Savannah Presbytery as part of the BRIDGE Mission Program. This is a new program that we are piloting aimed at welcoming youth to visit and serve in our community. These young people will be staying in the youth suite, doing service work at local mission organizations, and learning about God’s beautiful creation here in Coastal Georgia. Please be sure to say hello and welcome them to SSPC and the Golden Isles if you see them around church or around town!

You will also notice a number of other activities coming up on the church calendar. We have been enjoying learning about past and present prophets as part of oursummer Sunday school series learning about “Modern Day Prophets” andpreaching in worship on the Biblical prophets. Additionally, our Family ArtsNights are off to a great start and will continue happening every Wednesday duringthe month of July. I hope you will come engage your creative side while enjoyingfood and fellowship with your church family!

Lastly along with all of you, I am mindful of the heartache, hate, and violence thatseem to be gripping so much of the world in these days. I do not know the “answer”to these problems, however, I do know the answer is not to ignore them and hopethey go away. My prayer is that in times like these we might all be reminded of ourcall as Christians to confess our own brokenness, ask for God’s grace to lead us,and recommit ourselves to the difficult but essential work of listening to others, showing compassion, and practicing peacemaking. Indeed, the words we will hearfrom the prophet Micah this Sunday in worship are more appropriate for us nowthan ever” “What does the Lord require of you?” Micah asks. “To act justly and tolove mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Peace,Alan

MUSICAL NOTESSometimes you can’t get enough of a good thing – following worship on Sunday, Itraveled back north, but with Harlan and to Knoxville, Tennessee to spend sometime with family. It was a semi-calm 4th of July, especially when we found out thatwe could watch the local symphony and fireworks live on television and avoidtraffic, etc. Later in the week, we traveled to Blowing Rock, North Carolina wherethe weather was a little stormy, but much cooler. It was the first time that we hadexperienced the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. From the gathering of theclans on Thursday evening, to the Kirkin’ of the Tartan and Parade of Tartans onSunday, it was a great event with competitions of all kinds, and demonstrations. The lesson that I took on a chanter may bear fruit in the future. Is anyone up tolearning to play the bagpipes? While you were in church on Sunday morning, wewere at church outside with numerous others dressed in their Scottish best. Afterwards, I was allowed to participate in the parade of tartans with the Lesliefamily – and, to my surprise, was elected to carry the banner for my clan! As eachclan left the track, one from each went to the inner field to line up with the otherrepresentatives. I was one of three women out of the 50 or so clans to parade with5 Pipe and Drum Bands around the track, in military formation. It was interesting tosee all the different families of all races and backgrounds get together to celebrateheritage and family. Some of the families I spoke with weren’t even of Scottishdescent, they just loved the colors and pageantry of it all. If you happen to travelthis summer and spend time with other church families, bring back a bulletin to poston the Worship and Music bulletin board.

This Sunday, I will sing The Greatest of These is Love by Roberta Bitgood. This ICorinthians 13 setting is usually sung at weddings, but I felt it was appropriate inthe wake of so much hatred and violence. Future Sundays this summer will bringmore soloists and instrumentalists as they are available. August 14 is BluegrassSunday - make note of it on your calendar.

CALL TO SERVICEDear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. I'm sending you this note because Iknow how much you care for our community.

FaithWorks owns a house that was occupied by a mother and her son foralmost 30 years. Both recently passed away, leaving it in need ofcleaning, painting and minor repair.

We would like to help another family who recently suffered great loss dueto a workplace accident. They are now homeless. We want to move thisfamily into the house while they recover from their crisis.

We are looking for individuals, families, or groups that can give an hour, amorning, or an afternoon; perhaps a full day this week, to help us get thehouse in order.

If you can help, please contact me, Wright Culpepperat [email protected]. Thank you for caring.

Blessings,Wright
