Windsurfering

Windsurfing was born almost 40 years ago fromhumble beginnings, a triangular sail attached to along surfboard. The sport has evolved in manyways, and in many directions. Modern windsurf-ing retains the simple beauty of gliding acrossthe water, powered only by the breeze, but nowoffers once unimagined options including waveriding, freestyle, racing, jumping, and long distance cruising.

Windsurfing is an Olympic event, and hasspawned sister sports like kiteboarding and tow-in surfing. The latest incarnation of stand-up paddling combines traditionalHawaiian boarding with modern windsurfer technology. There are more ways than ever tohave fun on the water, and we'll help you enjoythem.

You don't need special conditions, or super-human strength to windsurf. Most any body ofwater with a bit of breeze is enough, and mostanyone who can swim and stand up can do it.We have equipment for all sizes, ages, and skilllevels.

Rigs: the force that powers your rideThe rig is the windsurfer's engine. Consisting of a sail, a mast that supports it vertically, a boom which is both horizontal support and handle, base extension to adjust the mast length, and the base which connects the rig to theboard and permits it to pivot on a universal joint. There are many brands and models of each part, with differentfeatures and quality. For beginners the most important issues are the size of the sail, which must be big enough toget you going, but not overpowering, and the mast, which should be two-piece for easy transportation, and have atleast some carbon to reduce weight and ensure proper bend. Lighter feels better, but costs more.

Which board is right for you? First, pick your sailing style.

Freeride boards are what most intermediate to advanced sailorsenjoy for all-around use. Fast enough, easy to turn, and comfort-able to ride even in choppy water. If you are working on gybes or footstraps, the boards on this page will help you get there. If youare already proficient, but don't want a specialized, single-useboard, you'll have fun on any of them.

Freestyle wave boards are for medium & higher wind use in a variety of conditions. Some are geared more for freestyle tricks,some for onshore wave riding, and others for bump & jump inchop or Gorge conditions, but all have some balance of speed,turning, and rough water control.

Freestyle boards are a must for new-school tricks, but also verymaneuverable and fun to ride. They plane and accelerate quicklyfor their volume, but they are not lightwind boards by mainlandstandards. Top speed and upwind performance are somewhat limited.

Wave SailsWave sails come in several sub-cate-gories, depending on the intended use.Many are fine all-around high wind sailsfor small waves or bump & jump use.Some are dedicated surf sails, ideal fordown-the-line, big wave riding, but limited for anything else. On-shore or"euro wave" sails have better speed andupwind ability. "Power wave" have moreacceleration, good for fluky winds, orbusting through shore-break. Consideryour prevalent conditions. Buying aMaui style sail to use in a duck pond isinefficient, but using a flimsy freeride sailin big surf is a recipe for disaster.

Fins - fine tune your ride!Next to the sail, the fin is perhaps the most dynamic and important componant in a windsurfing kit, yet seldomgiven much consideration by many windsurfers. Even the best board can't perform to full potential without a qualityfin. To get the full range from your favorite stick, try changing fins for different conditions. If there are weeds orgrass in the water, a weed fin is must-have. For upwind speed, a stiffer straighter blade is advantageous. For controlis rough water, or improved handling on a wave, try a slightly softer, more swept back fin. Special events like racingor freestyle call for special fin designs. Masts are the backbone of a windsurfing rig. Getting theright length and stiffness is critical to achieving the bestperformance from your sail. Masts with a higher percentageof carbon are lighter, which improves handling and reducesfatigue. High carbon masts also respond quicker to changing wind.

If you are going out in surf conditions, you'll need a wave-rated mast. Reduced diameter "skinny" masts are especially durable, but only work well with certain sails.Usually larger sails require standard diameter.

Harnesses and harness Lines: necessary equipment for powered sailing.We are often asked “when should I use a harness?” and “what is best, a seat or waist harness?” Seat or Waist?.. is

mostly a matter of preference, but generally better sailors on small manuever oriented boards prefer a waist harness and racingsailors and big board sailors with big sails prefer a seat harness. Whenn shoulld I use a HHarnness? A harness is an important partof getting your board planing and going fast enough to get into the footstraps. When you have mastered basic sail handling youare ready to start using a harness to put your weight into the rig and start using big enough sails to plane with. You’ll go faster,sail longer, and have more fun when you ride with with a harness.

A liittle wetsuiit common sense tokeep you warm and extend yourseason!

We do most of our sailing in Wisconsin wherethe best winds are usually in the cooler temper-atures of the spring and fall. Wherever you sailthere are probably times when you need the pro-tection of the right amount of neoprene to stay comfortable and warm while out on the water.

What is the right amount of Neoprene?It depends on the temperature of the air andwater you are going to sail in.

This may vary plus or minus 5 degrees depend-ing on your metabolism. If you want to sail incooler temperatures than 100 degrees you need adrysuit or you will want to add thermal layeringwith a thermo shirt or shorts. We like thedesign of Steamers because you can get in andout of these suits by yourself. A friend isrequired to help zip and unzip the horizontalzippers on drysuits.

Just like snow skiing, If your feet get cold puton a hat. When the air or water temperature gobelow 65 degrees, your body can no longer gen-erate enough heat to keep your core warm with-out insulation. Your body is wired to keep yourbrain warm even at the expense of your feet orhands going numb. So put on a hood or hat andyour body won't waste valuable energy keepingyour brain warm and there will be extra heat tocirculate warm blood to your hands and feet.

Windsurf suits are designed for above the wateras opposed to scuba suits that are designed forunderwater. Windsurfing suits minimize fore-arm fatigue with oversized forearm areas. Thetypical suits are designed with multiple thick-ness neoprene to give warmth and flexibilitywhere needed. Smooth skin sheds water quicklyto minimize the cooling effect of water evapo-rating off the suit. Most of the suit is black toabsorb the suns heat.

In Wisconsin it is cold 5/3 Steamer weatheruntil it is almost too warm for even a Shortywetsuit, so we think of 4/3 Steamers and 3/3Long legged convertible suits as luxury items.Where you sail it might be just right for thesesuits. It is always a good idea to check with theold salts to see what they use at your favoritesailing venue.

Start Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding, also called kite surfing, isan exciting sport. It is not hard tolearn, but requires good instruction and practice.

The best way to get started is to buy atrainer kite and instructional DVD.Watch the video to help visualize kitecontrol, then practice using the traineruntil you can "fly blind" by steering thekite wherever you want it without theneed to look at the kite or control bar.

Once you master the small kite, you areready for a lesson on a full sized kite.Be sure your instructor is a professionalwith IKO and / or PASA certification.

You will fly the big kite on land first,learning to control its considerablepower, then move to the water for bodydrags and water launch practice.

When you are comfortable with powermanagement, launching and landing,and can drag in both directions at-will,you can strap on a board and have someserious fun!

Most riders need about 5 to 10 hours ofland practice with a trainer, and 5 to 10hours of instruction to get the basics,but it is different for everyone. The better you are at flying the trainer, the quicker you'll make friends with thebig kites, so practice practice practice.
