LESSON 8: Compassion | EARLY ELEMENTARY 2

STEP 1 | Come Together (15 min)

Supplies: Large Cookie template, tape, two student-size chairs, one adult-size chair

Teacher Prep: Print the Large Cookie and Small Cookies templates and cut out the cookie shapes. Determine the height that your tallest student can reach while standing on a student chair. Mark that height lightly on the wall.

• GATHER the children.

LARGE COOKIE• SHOW the children the paper cookie.• SAY, Look what I have here. I want you to pretend that this is a delicious

cookie. I can’t wait to eat it, but because I’m so nice, I’m going to share it.• CHOOSE three children to stand by you. Tear the paper into four very

unequal parts so you can “share” the cookie with them. Have them hold their piece of cookie for the class to see, while you hold yours.

• ASK, Don’t you think I’m nice for sharing the cookie? What do you think about this? (Students will likely tell you that your sharing was unfair)

• ASK, What can I do to make it fair? (Take responses)• RIP the paper pieces again so each person has a relatively equal-size

amount.• SAY, Okay, so if I treat everyone exactly the same, that will be fair?

Let’s try that idea.

SMALL COOKIES• SHOW the children the two small cookies. Tape them to an open area

on the wall where you have previously marked the height. They should be out of reach for any child standing on the floor.

• CHOOSE the tallest and the shortest children in the class to stand below the cookies.

• SAY, Now if you were trying to get these cookies, this would not be fair at all because I’ve put them too high for you to reach. But I just learned that I can be fair by treating you exactly the same, so let me help you out.

• PULL two student-size chairs against the wall, below the cookies.• SAY, You two are allowed to stand on the chairs to reach the cookies.

The chairs are exactly the same, so it is fair. Go ahead and enjoy your

LESSON 8: Compassion | EARLY ELEMENTARY 3

cookies. (The taller student should be able to just reach the cookie, but the shorter won’t.)

• ASK, What went wrong here? You told me that if I treated people exactly the same that it would be fair, but this is definitely not fair. (Take responses)

• PULL an adult-size chair (without wheels) against the wall and allow the shorter student to retrieve the cookie.

REVIEW• SAY, It isn’t always easy to decide what is fair. God wants us to do what is

right and to always treat others with kindness. This doesn’t mean that we treat everyone exactly the same, but we are to give each person what they need. If we treat others with kindness, we will make God happy.

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse slowly

a few times until the children are able to say the verse from memory• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

Psalm 82:4Save those (lift arms in an umbrella-like shape)who are weak and needy. (cup your hands like a beggar)

STEP 2 | Hear the Story (10 min)

Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, whiteboard or flipchart, dry-erase or regular markers, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations

INTRODUCTION• TELL children that they will be hearing about how God wants us to

treat people in need.• DRAW a T-chart on the whiteboard or flipchart. Label the left side “In

Need” and the right side “Helper.”• SAY, As we read today, listen for examples of people in need and how

others helped them. I’ll record your ideas on the chart.

READ CHAPTER 8• READ aloud chapter 8, “Compassion,” from the Believe Storybook Bible.• SHOW the illustrations included with this curriculum on PowerPoint

slides or printable posters.

LESSON 8: Compassion | EARLY ELEMENTARY 4

• CREATE the following chart, pausing after key points in the story to record them:

In Need HelperNaomi (friendship, food) Ruth (followed her, collected grain)Ruth (grain, husband) Boaz (gave grain, married her)Traveler (clothing, care) Good Samaritan (took him to an inn)

REVIEW• ASK, What were some needs people had in these stories? (Food, friend-

ship, medical care, clothing, water, shelter)• ASK, What are some needs that all people have? (Food, friendship,

medical care, clothing, water, shelter, Jesus)• ASK, Who do you think was most compassionate in today’s stories?

Why? (Take responses)• ASK, Why do you think Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan?

(He was showing us what God is like toward us; he was showing us how to treat one another, even people we don’t feel like being nice to)

• ASK, How can we show compassion the way God wants us to? (Take responses)

• PRAY, God, please help us to show everyone kindness and to help those in need. Amen.

STEP 3 | Explore MoreChoose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help children explore the lesson further.

Option 1: Can of Compassion (15 min)

Supplies: Clean, empty can (one per child); Can of Compassion template; glue sticks; stickers or stamps; crayons; markers; craft sticks (several per child)

Teacher Prep: Collect clean, empty cans or ask families ahead of time to send one in. Check for any sharp edges (bend them down with pliers). Print, photocopy, and cut apart the Can of Compassion template (one slip needed per child). Note that the paper size is based on a vegetable can, approximately 15 oz. If you have cans of different sizes, cut the paper accordingly, leaving about an inch for overlap. Prepare a sample to use as a model. Test your markers to find ones that won’t bleed when writing on the wooden craft sticks.

Page 5: LESSON 8 | Compassionstorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch/documents/08...Traveler (clothing, ... Test your markers to find ones that won’t bleed when writing on ... LESSON

LESSON 8: Compassion | EARLY ELEMENTARY 5

• SHOW children the sample can.• SAY, Today we are going to make compassion cans. This will help

remind you to be loving and kind toward others. My compassion can is filled with the names of people in my life — relatives, friends, coworkers. Even my mail carrier and my hairstylist are in here. Each day I choose a name and try to do something to show kindness to that person. If I don’t see them that day, I say a special prayer or write a little card to bring to them another time.

• GIVE each child a strip of paper with the verse printed on it. Show them how to fold back about one inch on a short side so they do not decorate it. (This will be the overlapping section to glue.)

• ALLOW students to decorate their paper using crayons, stickers, stamps, or other fun craft supplies.

• INSTRUCT children to glue their label around their can.• GIVE students a few craft sticks on which to write names of family,

friends, or others. Write one name on each stick.• INSTRUCT the children to add more names at home with help from

their family.• ENCOURAGE the children to use their compassion can often to

remind them to show love and kindness toward others.

Option 2: Charades (10 min)

Supplies: Feelings Cards template

Teacher Prep: Print, photocopy, and cut apart the Feelings Cards template

• SAY, Compassion is not only a feeling, it is also an action. In today’s stories, Ruth, Boaz, and the Good Samaritan didn’t just feel compassion, they also acted on their feelings. People don’t always tell us their feel-ings, but they can show us through their actions.

• CONTINUE, We are going to play a guessing game to see how well you can figure out a person’s feelings based on their actions.

• CHOOSE one child to stand and draw a card.• TELL the child to act out the emotion for their classmates to guess,

using facial expressions and actions.• GIVE each child a turn.• SAY, Remember that our feelings and our actions are connected. The

next time you find yourself feeling compassion, act on that feeling!

Option 3: How Can I Help? (10 min)

Supplies: How Can I Help? sheet (one per child), crayons, pencils

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the How Can I Help? sheet (one per child).

NOTE: Consider photocopying the How Can I Help? sheet doublesided.

• GIVE a copy of the How Can I Help? sheet to each child.• READ the directions.• HELP with any questions or problems as they respond to each situation.• ALLOW children to share their favorite response with the class.• NOTE: You may also choose to complete this activity in pairs or as a

group to allow for interaction and discussion. You may also choose to have children simply draw a picture for each section and label it.

Option 4: Let’s Color! (10 min)

Supplies: Crayons or markers; Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let’s Color! sheet (one per child).

• GIVE each child a coloring page.• PROVIDE a selection of crayons and/or markers for the children to share.• DISCUSS this week’s Key Idea as the children color.

Who Is a Good Neighbor?

Use four puppets or class helpers to act out the following short skit. Introduce the four characters to the children before starting.

Setting: At school

Characters

Ted injured boyBen a bad neighborMarie a bad neighborSammy the Good Samaritan, the Good Neighbor

Optional Props: Four puppets, bandage, play money

Ted: Oooh! Ouch! I’ve scraped my knee. Will someone help me?

Ben: (in passing) Sorry, I’m kind of busy.

Marie: (also in passing) I don’t even know you.

Sammy: Hey, friend. Here’s a bandage. Let me help you carry your skate-board home.

Ted: Oh, thanks! (to the children) Who was being a good neighbor?

Children: Sammy!

Ted: (nods head yes; brief pause) Oh, no. It’s time for lunch, and I forgot my money at home. I’m so hungry. Will someone let me borrow money so I will not be hungry?

Ben: (in passing) I can’t, buddy. I’m saving my money to buy a new game.

Marie: (also in passing) No, I’m not sure you’ll ever pay me back.

Sammy: Let me help! I have only enough money for an extra fruit cup, but I can share my sandwich with you too.

Ted: (to the children) Who was being a good neighbor?

Children: Sammy!

Ted: (nods head yes; brief pause) Oh, boy! I just had some friends come to my house to play, and now my bedroom looks like it was hit by a tornado! Who will help me clean up this mess?

Ben: (in passing) Well, I wasn’t really playing with those things, so it’s not my job.

Marie: (also in passing) It’s your bedroom. Why should I clean it up?

Ted: (to the children) Who was being a good neighbor?

Children: Sammy!

Ted: (nods head yes) Sammy, you’ve been such a great friend to me. Others were not being kind or helpful, but you were. Why are you so good to me?

Sammy: I know that God loves me and has done so much to help me. When he says, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” I am happy to show his love to others.

Ted: Now that’s being a good neighbor! Let’s give a round of applause to Sammy the Good Samaritan!

(CHILDREN clap)

STEP 4 | Going Home (5 min)

Supplies: Family Page (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Family Page supplied with this lesson (one per child).

• GIVE each child a copy of this week’s Family Page.• SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will

remind you to tell your family about how God wants us to be kind and helpful to one another.

• HAVE children practice telling you about how they can be kind and helpful to others.

• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse as well as today’s story and Key Idea from the Believe Storybook Bible as you wait for the children to get picked up.

• MAKE sure each child remembers to take home any activity sheets or craft projects and the Family Page.

FAMILY PAGE | Lesson 8: Compassion

Bible Basis: Ruth 1 – 4; Luke 10:25 – 37

Key Verse: Psalm 82:4: “Save those who are weak and needy.”

Key Question: What should we do about people in need?

Key Idea: I believe God calls all Chris tians to show compassion to people in need.

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible , Chapter 8, “Compassion”

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passages from your Bible to help your child remember it. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the din-ner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile ideas provide interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

Table Talk 1. Tell me about a time when someone was kind or helpful to you. How

did it make you feel? 2. Tell me about a time when you were kind or helpful to someone else.

How did it make you feel? How do you think it made the other person feel?

3. Have you ever been in a situation where you could help, but you didn’t? What stopped you?

4. Have you ever been in a situation where you needed help, and someone ignored you? How did you feel?

Living Faith

Option 1The story of the Good Samaritan makes for a fun role-play. You may even need to act out the scene twice so your child can play the Good Samaritan and also the injured man. Prepare your child to play the injured man by wearing a

9780310826385_believe_curr_early_elem_1_10_4thpgs.indd 9 3/25/15 10:27 AM

Page 22: LESSON 8 | Compassionstorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch/documents/08...Traveler (clothing, ... Test your markers to find ones that won’t bleed when writing on ... LESSON

LESSON 8: Compassion | EARLY ELEMENTARY

bathing suit or similar garment under some loose clothing. Use stuffed animals for robbers so your child can wrestle around with them during the “attack.” The Good Samaritan will need a container of water, a blanket, a bag of coins, and a donkey (use an ottoman or large pillow for this). You may even enlist siblings to play the parts of the priest and Levite who walked by without stop-ping. Talk to your child after the role-play about how important it is to be a good neighbor to the people around us who may be hurting.

Option 2Your child can act out this scene with dolls or other toys. Provide your child with adhesive and rolls of bandages so they can attend to the injured doll or toy.

Extra Mile• Children this age can be very fixated on the idea of what is “fair.” Create

a small poster to help settle this issue when it comes up in your house-hold. On a piece of construction paper, copy the following:

“It’s not fair!” 1. What happened? 2. Was it equal? 3. Was it fair? 4. Was it good?

When faced with an “It’s not fair!” situation, talk through these four points with your child. Remind your child that some things can be unequal but still fair (such as older children doing more chores than younger children). Some things can be unfair but still good (such as letting your brother play with a toy even though he took it without asking). Remind your child that, above all, God wants us to treat one another with love.

• Find a way for your family to help those in need in your community. Depending on your resources and the needs, this may involve visiting a nursing home to spread cheer, donating old towels to an animal shelter, or sponsoring a child from another nation. Keep in mind the idea that you are giving of yourselves simply because there is a need.

• Catch your child being caring. Keep some paper clips handy in your purse, car, or drawer at home. Explain to your child that you will add a link to a chain of paper clips anytime you catch him or her showing kindness or compassion. When the chain reaches a certain length (use your judgment), share it with your child. Explain that you have been noticing their kindness and have added onto the chain with each example. Celebrate with a special treat, such as a trip to the park, a movie night, or some other reward your child will appreciate.
