LESSON 4: The Bible | EARLY ELEMENTARY 2

STEP 1 | Come Together (5 min)

Supplies: Instruction manual (for anything: an appliance, an electronic device, a bicycle, etc.)

• GATHER the children.• SHOW children your instruction manual.• ASK the children if they know what it is. (Take responses)• ASK the children if they know what it is for. (Take responses)• SAY, This instruction manual helps me to know how to use (name of

item). It also tells me how to use it safely, and how to get the most out of it, and how to put it together correctly. (You can adjust this to fit the item your manual is for)

• CONTINUE, Now this instruction manual is useful because it was written by someone who created this item or at least knows a lot about it. That person had the authority to give directions on using the item.

• HOLD UP the Bible.• SAY, Just like we have instructions so we know how to use differ-

ent things, God uses the Bible to explain the ways he wants us to act toward one another. The Bible is God’s grand story, and it has tons of great stories about his love for us.

• SAY, Today we are going to read about some of God’s special instruc-tions for loving each other and how Jesus used God’s Word to scare off the devil.

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse slowly

a few times until the children are able to say the verse from memory• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

2 Tim othy 3:16God has breathed life into all Scripture.

(blow gently into your cupped hands)

It is useful for teaching us what is true.

(give a “thumbs-up”)

LESSON 4: The Bible | EARLY ELEMENTARY 3

READ CHAPTER 4• READ aloud chapter 4, The Bible from the Believe Storybook Bible.• SHOW the illustrations included with this curriculum on PowerPoint

slides or printable posters.

REVIEW THE TEN COMMANDMENTS• ASK, Why did God give Moses the Ten Commandments? ( People had

no rules; people did whatever they liked; God’s laws were put into writ-ing which made sure they would be shared accurately with everyone)

• ASK, What are some of the Ten Commandments? (Take responses)• ASK, What rule does the Bible say is most important? (Love and wor-

ship God)

REVIEW JESUS• ASK, When Jesus was tempted by the devil, what powerful strategy did

he use to fight back? (He quoted Scripture)• ASK, What does that tell us about God’s Word? (It is powerful; it can

help us fight temptation; we should memorize it)• PRAY, God, thank you for your true and powerful Word, the Bible.

Please help us to always obey your words and to love you more. Amen.

STEP 3 | Explore MoreChoose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help children explore the lesson further.

Option 1: My Commandments (15 min)

Supplies: Brown construction paper (one per child), scissors, markers, pens, whiteboard, dry-erase marker

Teacher Prep: Cut out a sample tablet similar to that on which Moses received the Ten Commandments. Also, write the words “Ten Command-ments” on a whiteboard as well as the simplified version of each com-mandment as follows:

1. Love God. 2. No idols. 3. Keep God’s name holy. 4. Keep the Sabbath. 5. Respect your parents. 6. Don’t kill. 7. Don’t commit adultery.

LESSON 4: The Bible | EARLY ELEMENTARY 4

8. Don’t steal. 9. Don’t lie. 10. Don’t covet.

• SAY, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments because they were good instructions for everyone.

• CONTINUE, Sometimes we need help with certain things, and it is a good idea to set up rules for ourselves concerning these things. For example, one of my personal commandments might be: “Be patient with my siblings.”

• GIVE each student a piece of brown construction paper, and instruct them to cut it into a tablet shape similar to that on which Moses received the Ten Commandments.

• SAY, Today you will come up with some commandments for yourself. Make sure that they are rules or instructions that will help you in areas where you sometimes have trouble.

• INSTRUCT the students to first copy the simplified list of command-ments onto their construction paper tablets, then brainstorm some ideas for personal commandments and have them write out their own per-sonal commandments on their construction paper tablets.

• INSTRUCT the students to keep these commandments somewhere at home where they can see them often and be reminded of ways to make better choices.

Option 2: Double Dare (15 min)

Supplies: Double Dare Cards template, Ten Commandments template

NOTE: Some Double Dare Cards will describe an action that follows the Ten Commandments, such as “Listen to your parents.” Other cards will describe actions that do not follow the commandments, such as “Take your friend’s candy.” The number of the commandment that will help in the specific situation is written on the reverse side of the card.

Teacher Prep: Print and cut out one set of Double Dare Cards. Be sure to print the Double Dare Cards double-sided. Print and enlarge the Ten Com-mandments template. Have children refer to these Ten Commandments during the game.

• DIVIDE the children into two teams.• SAY, We are going to play a game that will help you understand how to

use the Ten Commandments to help you make good choices.

Page 5: LESSON 4 | The Biblestorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch... · • SHOW children your instruction manual. • ASK the children if they know what it is. (Take responses)

LESSON 4: The Bible | EARLY ELEMENTARY 5

• SAY, Each team will line up single file. The person in front will walk up to me, take a Double Dare card and read it out loud. A member of the other team in the front of the line must respond to the dare with the appropriate commandment that would help make a good choice in that situation. If you know the commandment, your team gets a point. If you cannot name the commandment, you must go to the back of the line. The number of the commandment that is correct is written on the back of the card. So don’t turn it over until I tell you to do so. We will switch back and forth between teams until everyone has had a turn.

• PLAY until every child has had a chance to read one Double Dare card.• NOTE: Playing this game will create many teachable moments or

opportunities to start a discussion with the children about their lives. Take time to allow children to share stories that come to mind as you read the Double Dare cards.

Option 3: Ten Commandments Song (10 min)• GATHER the children.• SAY, We are going to learn a song that will help us remember God’s

ten special commandments.• LEAD the children in several rounds of this song. Sing it to the tune of

“Jingle Bells.”

Do not have other gods;Or worship something fake;Keep the Lord’s name holy;Give God a special day. HEY!Love your mom and your dad;Don’t hurt or cheat or steal; No lies, no wanting what’s not yoursThis is God’s great way. HEY!

Option 4: Let’s Color! (10 min)

Supplies: Crayons or markers, Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let’s Color! sheet (one per child).

• GIVE each child a coloring page.• PROVIDE a selection of crayons and/or markers for the children to share.• DISCUSS this week’s Key Idea as the children color.

FAMILY PAGE | Lesson 4: The Bible

Bible Basis: Exodus 20:1 – 17; Matthew 4:1 – 11

Key Verse: 2 Tim othy 3:16: “God has breathed life into all Scrip-ture. It is useful for teaching us what is true.”

Key Question: How do I know God and his plan for my life?

Key Idea: I believe the Bible is God’s Word, and it guides my beliefs and actions.

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible , Chapter 4, The Bible

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passage from your Bible to help your child remem-ber the lesson. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile ideas provide interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

Table Talk 1. What would it be like if there were no rules at home? At school? On

the roads? 2. What would it be like if everyone followed God’s rules all the time? 3. How do you know the Bible is true and powerful? ( Jesus used Scripture

against the devil; God is truth; the Holy Spirit inspired the authors) 4. How can the Bible help you when you are tempted to do something

wrong? (God’s words remind you of what’s right and true so you won’t be deceived; the consequences of doing what’s wrong; how to ask God for his power to resist temptation)

Living Faith

Option 1The story of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments can be a fun story to reenact with your children. Help your child dress up in a bathrobe to get into character as Moses. Find a safe place where your child can pretend to climb up Mount Sinai. Another parent can pretend to give the Ten Commandments

9780310826385_believe_curr_early_elem_1_10_4thpgs.indd 8 3/25/15 10:27 AM

LESSON 4: The Bible | EARLY ELEMENTARY

to the child in the form of a large book. Lead your child in reciting the Ten Commandments to you or to other siblings as they stand up on the “mountain.”

Option 2Help your child memorize the Ten Commandments in a fun way. Quiz your child when he or she is least expecting it. For example, when you see the “10 Items or Less” sign at the grocery store, ask your child to tell you the tenth commandment. When you see a sign for a one-way street, ask your child to tell you the first commandment. Whenever you see a number between one and ten, use it as a great opportunity to make memorization fun.

Extra Mile

• Help your child begin memorizing the Ten Commandments by practic-ing this simple song to the tune of “Jingle Bells”:

Do not have other gods;Or worship something fake;Keep the Lord’s name holy;Give God a special day. HEY!Love your mom and your dad;Don’t hurt or want or take;No lies, no wanting what’s not yoursThis is God’s great way. HEY!

• Help your child to understand the importance of having and obeying rules by making a poster together for household rules. Have your child help you come up with your household rules, along with consequences for not following them or rewards for following them. Explain to your children how each of these rules helps us to stay safe and get along bet-ter with our family members. Decorate the poster together, and hang it somewhere in your house where you will all see it.

• Your child can to know God’s Word better by memorizing the books of the Bible. There are several different song versions available online to help in this useful task.
