LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY 2

STEP 1 | Come Together (10 min)

Supplies: Paper cups (one per child), scooper, soil, bean, corn and sun-flower seeds (enough for each child to have several of one kind of seed), Bean template, Corn template, Sunflower template, water, marker, Bible

Teacher Prep: Before class, cover a work area with newspaper. Also gather a variety of seeds such as corn, beans, and sunflowers. Print the Bean tem-plate, Corn template, and Sunflower template.

SEEDS• GATHER the children.• SAY, Our lesson today is about studying the Bible. Studying the Bible is

different from just reading the Bible, and it helps us to know God bet-ter. In fact, Jesus told a story comparing people who understand God’s Word to seeds that grow in good soil!

• SHOW the children the seeds and ask if they know what type of plants these seeds will become when they grow bigger. (Take responses)

• SAY, We know that these seeds will become these kinds of plants. (Hold up corresponding template pictures)

• ASK, How can we be sure these seeds will produce these kinds of plants? (Answers will vary)

• SAY, We know which seeds grow into these plants because people have been growing seeds and studying plants for a long, long time. We can learn what each seed will grow into by studying what people before us have done and by watching seeds grow after we plant them.

BIBLE• HOLD up a Bible.• SAY, Planting seeds and watching them grow can happen in our lives,

just as it happens in a garden. As we study God’s Word, the Bible, we grow in our faith, just like these seeds grow into plants.

PLANTING• SAY, Today we are going to learn more about studying God’s Word,

and we are going to learn more about seeds.• ASK, Do you know what seeds need in order to grow? (Soil, water,

sunlight)• SAY, Right, good soil, water, and sunlight are important to grow a

plant from a seed. I will let each of you come up and take a turn plant-ing several seeds of one kind in a paper cup.

LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY 3

• DEMONSTRATE how to scoop soil into the cup, scatter the seeds and cover them with a bit more soil. Also show the children how much water to add.

• ALLOW the children to take turns planting their seeds and carefully watering them.

• NOTE: If your group is comprised of more than ten children, consider splitting into small groups for the planting and watering of seeds.

• MAKE sure to label each cup with the type of seed planted and the child’s name.

• SAY, We will keep these here in a sunny spot, and each week we can watch how they grow.

• NOTE: If you do not have a location to keep the seeds over the next few weeks, you may choose to send the seeds home with the children. Have them report their seeds’ progress each week. You could even have them bring in pictures after their seeds begin to sprout!

REVIEW• SAY, So far we have learned that studying can help us to better under-

stand things in nature as well as in the Word of God.• SAY, Just as seeds need good soil, water, and sunlight to grow, we need

to study the Word of God in order to grow and become more like God.

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse

slowly a few times until the children are able to say the verse from memory.

• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

Hebrews 4:12The word of God (open hands like a book)is alive and active. (hold up hands and wiggle fingers)

STEP 2 | Hear the Story (15 min)

Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations

INTRODUCTION• TELL the children that they will be learning more about seeds and the

importance of studying God’s Word.

Page 4: LESSON 13 | Bible Studystorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch... · LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY . Bible Study. Bible Basis: Joshua 1:1 – 11; Matthew 13:1

LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY 4

• SAY, We already learned that God uses seeds to grow things, and that when people study something, they learn more about it.

• CONTINUE, We’ll also learn more about how Jesus taught his follow-ers about how things grow and why it is important to spend time each day studying God’s Word.

READ CHAPTER 13• READ aloud chapter 13, “Bible Study,” from the Believe Storybook Bible.• SHOW illustrations included in this curriculum on PowerPoint slides or

printable posters.

REVIEW JOSHUA• ASK, What do we use on a trip to help us know where to go? (A map or

GPS)• ASK, What do we use to help us know where to go in life? (The Word

of God)• ASK, What did Joshua use to help him know where to lead the Israel-

ites? (He used God’s directions; he listened to God)

REVIEW THE SOWER• ASK, To what did Jesus compare people in his story? (Seeds)• ASK, What types of soil did the seeds in the story fall into? (Shallow

soil, rocky soil, thorny soil, and good soil)• ASK, If you hear God’s Word, study God’s Word, and obey God’s Word,

what kind of seed will you be? (Like the seeds that grew in good soil)• PRAY, Thank you, God, for giving us your Word and helping us to

understand it. Please continue to grow us like seeds grow into plants as we study the Bible and share your story with others. Amen.

STEP 3 | Explore MoreChoose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help the children explore the lesson further.

Option 1: Sunny the Sunflower (15 min)

Supplies: Yellow and green tissue paper, sunflower seeds, card stock (one sheet per child), Sunny the Sunflower template, glue

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Sunny the Sunflower template onto card stock (one per child). Cut tissue paper into strips. Prepare an example ahead of time for the children to use as a model.

Page 5: LESSON 13 | Bible Studystorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch... · LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY . Bible Study. Bible Basis: Joshua 1:1 – 11; Matthew 13:1

LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY 5

• GIVE each child a copy of the Sunny the Sunflower template and sev-eral strips of yellow and green tissue paper.

• INSTRUCT the children to crumple the tissue paper into small balls and glue the green pieces on the stem of their sunflower.

• INSTRUCT the children to crumple the yellow strips in the same man-ner and to glue them on the petals of their sunflower, leaving a circular open space in the middle of the flower.

• GIVE each child a handful of sunflower seeds and instruct them to glue the seeds into the center of their sunflower.

• SAY, These sunflower seeds grow into a huge sunflower plant when they have the right growing conditions. Each plant contains many, many seeds in its center, just like your picture. These seeds fall to the ground, or are carried by birds, and more plants begin to grow.

• CONTINUE, In the same way, by studying the Bible and spreading the good news of Jesus, you can help more and more people come to know God!

Option 2: Dirt Game (15 min)

Supplies: One container with a very small amount of dry dirt, one con-tainer with a small amount of dry dirt with rocks mixed in, one container with dry dirt and small twigs or vines mixed in to simulate the thorny soil, one container with good potting soil, baby wipes

Teacher Prep: Prepare soil samples in four containers.

• SAY, In the story today we learned that the seeds fell on different types of soil.

• CONTINUE, We are going to play a game to see if we can identify the different types of soil.

• REVIEW the types of soil with children: shallow soil, rocky soil, thorny soil, and good soil.

• ALLOW each child, with their eyes closed, to reach into a container and feel the contents to see if they can guess which type of soil they are feeling.

• CONTINUE until each child has had a turn feeling inside the contain-ers and guessing the different soil types.

• ALLOW the children to clean their hands with baby wipes.• ASK, Which one would you want to plant a seed in? (Take responses)• SAY, That’s right, the good soil! Remember, we want our hearts to be

like this good soil so God’s Word can get planted in it and grow into something amazing!

Option 3: Disappearing Memory Verse Game (15 min)

Supplies: Whiteboard or flipchart with easel, dry-erase or regular markers

Teacher Prep: Write the memory verse on the whiteboard or flipchart.

Hebrews 4:12: “The word of God is alive and active.”

• SAY, We are going to play a simple game to help review our memory verse.

• REVIEW the entire verse several times with the children.• ERASE one word from the verse on the board (or mark out one word

on the flipchart), and then ask the children to continue to recite the whole verse.

• CONTINUE the game by erasing an additional word during each round of the game; continue to ask the children to recite the verse with fewer and fewer words being supplied.

• PLAY until all the words are erased. Help the children by prompting them when they get stuck.

Option 4: Let’s Color! (10 min)

Supplies: Crayons or markers, Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

• GIVE each child a coloring page.• PROVIDE a selection of crayons and/or markers for the children to

share.• DISCUSS this week’s Key Idea as the children color.

Option 5: Praise and Worship (15 min)

Option 6: Act It Out (10 min)

Study to Know

Use two puppets to act out the following short skit.

Setting: Outdoors

Characters

LilahJack

Props: Two puppets

Lilah: Hey, buddy! What do you want to do today?

Jack: I want to go climb the big oak tree.

Lilah: That sounds fun. Let’s do it!

(LILAH and JACK run over to the big tree nearby)

Jack: Hey, how do you think this big tree got here in the first place?

Lilah: Oh, don’t you know? It came out of a little seed called an acorn.

Jack: What? No way! How could something so big come out of something so small?

Lilah: It’s a miracle. God did it.

Jack: How do you know it came out of a seed?

Lilah: Well, we know because when we plant a seed, we can watch it grow. People have been growing seeds and studying plants for a long, long time. We can learn by studying what people before us have done.

Jack: So when you study something, you learn more about it?

Lilah: Exactly! It even works with the Bible.

Jack: What do you mean?

Lilah: If you study God’s Word, you will learn all kinds of amazing things about God. We can learn how to grow and become more like him, just like the seeds become plants!

Jack: Wow! So if I read God’s Word, the Bible, I will become more like God? I can’t wait to start reading!

Lilah: Yeah, it is exciting to study God’s Word and to think about his love for us.

Jack: When we climb down from this tree, will you help me study and read my Bible?

Lilah: Sure! That sounds fun.

STEP 4 | Going Home (5 min)

Supplies: Family Page (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Family Page (one per child).

• GIVE each child a copy of this week’s Family Page.• SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will

remind you to tell your family what you learned today about studying God’s Word and the story of the sower and the seeds.

• HAVE the children practice telling you about the sower and the seeds.• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse as well as today’s story and Key Idea

from the Believe Storybook Bible as you wait for the children to get picked up.

• MAKE sure each child remembers to take home any activity sheets or craft projects and the Family Page.

Key Verse: Hebrews 4:12: “The word of God is alive and active.”

Key Question: How do I study God’s Word?

Key Idea: I study the Bible to know God and his truth and to find direction for my daily life.

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible, Chapter 13, “Bible Study”

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passage from your Bible to help your child remem-ber the lesson. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile idea provides interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

Table Talk 1. Where should we keep our Bible? How often do you take time to read

it? 2. Do you prefer to read your Bible by yourself or with other people? 3. How do you think studying the Bible together could help our family

grow closer together and closer to God? 4. What do we need to do in order to really know God’s Word? (We

need to study the Bible and pray for God to help us understand it)

Living Faith

Option 1The parable of the sower is a great hands-on Bible study. Take your child to a community garden or local farm — or, even better, plant a garden as a family! Study the types of soil that you encounter, talking about how they would be good or bad for growing plants. If you are able to plant a garden together, keep track of the progress of your plants. Discuss with your child how plants thrive

9780310826385_believe_curr_early_elem_11_30_4thpgs.indd 9 3/25/15 10:05 AM

Page 20: LESSON 13 | Bible Studystorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch... · LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY . Bible Study. Bible Basis: Joshua 1:1 – 11; Matthew 13:1

LESSON 13: Bible Study | EARLY ELEMENTARY

in good soil with the proper nutrients, just like the Bible gives us the spiritual nutrients we need to grow in our faith in God.

Option 2As another option, read the story of the sower and the seeds to your child, then help your child find an online time-lapse video of seeds sprouting and growing. Explain to your child how, when we study God’s Word, we are like the fast-growing seeds. We grow in our understanding of God by learning God’s Word.

Extra Mile• Practice this simple action poem called “I’m a Little Seed” together,

doing the actions as you read the poem aloud.

I’m a little seed hiding deep in the ground,(Squat down and cover head with hands and arms)And the sun shines, and the rain falls, and I pop up my head,(Quickly uncover head and look up on “pop”)I reach up my leaves,(Begin to stand and stretch arms up)And I stretch up to the sky,(Stand tall and reach up)Now I’m a beautiful flower,(Bring hands to sides of face)Blowing in the breeze!(Gently sway from side to side)

• Help your child practice the memory verse by playing “Bible Memory Freeze.” After reviewing the memory verse with your child several times, throughout the day tap your child on the shoulder and say, “Freeze.” Your child stays frozen until they recite the verse. Allow your child to freeze you throughout the day and require you to recite the verse. This will help your child understand that memorizing the Word of God is important to you as well.

• Explain to your child that sowing seeds of the gospel — the good news about Jesus — means sharing with others what we have learned when we study the Bible. Encourage your child to tell others this week what he or she has learned from the Word of God.

• This would be a great week to really focus on your family Bible study time. Use the Believe Storybook Bible or another children’s Bible to discover some of the many great Bible stories. Help your child become excited about exploring Scripture by making it a special one-on-one reading time during the day, after a meal, or before bedtime.
