Weekly Maths ideas

Weekly Maths ideas Good morning, Thank you very much for all your lovely emails last week. It was great to see how hard you are all working and pleasing to see all the effort that is going into the work. I also logged into Mathletics last night and was very delighted to see how many of you have been using it and thank you for completing the little assignments on there for me. It really helps me to plan ahead and see how I can help you all further. I am very proud of you all. Well done and keep up the hard work. Like last week on the following slides are some suggested maths activities, for a week of fun maths learning. These skills link to our year 2 maths curriculum and are areas that we would be looking at and consolidating in school. The children will have had experience already of these skills in class, so it is an opportunity to strengthen and continue to build on these. These activities could take up to 30 minutes to complete, but this may vary depending on engagement. I have included worksheets where I think it maybe helpful. I have tried where possible to include them in the Power point so you have to just print that slide, rather than adding lots of additional links on the website. Have fun and enjoy. Any problems please do contact me via email. I look forward to hearing about how it goes. Mrs Sealy, Mrs Smith and Mrs Wild [email protected]

Maths- Warm up ideas

As a warm up before each session the children could use the ‘Daily 10’ game to practise their mental maths skills. I recommend the children playing on level 1 or 2 or 3 for a challenge. You are able to select which skill they practise by changing this along the top tab. The children are familiar with this website. Watch out for some exciting and new maths warm up ideas next.

Lesson 1- Measuring in centimetres (CM)

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/measuring-in-cm

In todays lesson I would like the children to learn how to measure using a ruler and measuring objects and lines in centimetres. Mrs Smith has kindly made a video, which can be found on our You Tube channel of how to use a ruler to measure lines. Please see link https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmklshUg3Ov1BHTs7HuACS6cTCLTVzZUw Discuss the video and spend some time looking at and discussing how to use a ruler.

The aim of todays learning is for the children to be able to measure objects and lines to the nearest ‘cm’. I have included some worksheets on the following slides, but other activities you could try are find objects around the house and measure them using a ruler or below are some links to some measuring games.

When we start a new topic in maths, we always draw a mind map, with key vocabulary, thoughts and ideas. Mrs Smith has drawn one for measuring which you could refer to across the week. You could even add to it, it you find out something new.

Lesson 2- Measuring in meters (M) In todays lesson I would like the children to practise measuring larger objects using meters. First ask the children this question: If I wanted to find out how tall the door was what would I use to measure it? (discuss how you wouldn’t use a ruler like yesterday as it is to small and would not be accurate) Then discuss how we can measure using a tape measure. Discuss and look a tape measure and how it can be used to measure larger objects. Activity ideas: • Use a tape measure and practise measuring things in meters • There is a worksheet on the following slide, where the children need

to find objects that are less than a meter and more than a meter. Key point to talk through with the children- there are 100cm in 1 meter, so once you get past the 100cm mark discuss how it then 1 meter and so many centimetres. Below are some video clips about measuring in meters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFh5lO1SQlw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT_c0AQu1I8

Lesson 3- Comparing measurements using the <, > and = signs

In todays lesson I would like the children to practise using the < > and = signs to compare measurements. The children have had experience of using these signs earlier in the year. We refer to be them as the greater than and less than sign. We often say the trick to remember which is which is: the crocodile always eats the bigger number. See the next slide for a picture to demonstrate this. The video clip below explains further: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Efzu2slaI

We would say 4 is less than 10

Remember the crocodile always eat the larger amount.

Some questions to discuss before you start a worksheet

There are worksheets on the following slides for you put this into practise with measurements.

Lesson 4- Ordering lengths

In todays lesson I would like the children to practise putting different lengths in order of size using the measurements. This can be both from smallest to largest and from largest to smallest. Below is an example.

Answers- discuss how and why it is in this order. Then give them a few more to try.

Discuss whether this is true or false and why?

Activity ideas: • Practical activity- find objects around the house and put them in

order. To extend this measure them in cm and then put in order. • There are worksheets on the following slides for the children to try

out • On the links below are some games for the children to try out. https://www.splashlearn.com/measurement-gameshttps://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/measuring-in-cm

Re-write these lengths out in order from smallest to biggest e.g. The first row would be: 3cm, 15cm, 32cm, 126cm

Lesson 5- Mathletics I have put a task on Mathletics for the children to complete- it will be available on Thursday morning until Sunday evening. This is a good way for me to see how the children are developing in these skills and how and where I can further support their learning. The task incorporates all learning from the suggested 2 lessons. https://login.mathletics.com/ Have fun. Well done on your maths learning this week.
