Weekly Maths ideas Good morning, Thank you very much for all your lovely emails last week, it was a real pleasure opening up my inbox. It was great to see how hard you are all working and pleasing to see all the effort that is going into the work. I logged into Mathletics last night and was very delighted to see how many of you have been using it and thank you for completing the little assignments on there for me. It really helps me to plan ahead and see how I can help you all further. I am very proud of you all. Well done and keep up the hard work. Like last week on the following slides are some suggested maths activities, for a week of fun maths learning. These skills link to our year 2 maths curriculum and are areas that we would be looking at and consolidating in school. The children will have had experience already of these skills in class, so it is an opportunity to strengthen and continue to build on these. These activities could take up to 30 minutes to complete, but this may vary depending on engagement. Again many of this weeks skills could be verbal activities and games and can be done at different times of the day, in the garden, whilst your cooking tea or even at bath time. I have also included worksheets where I think it may help. I have tried where possible to include them in the Power point so you have to just print that slide, rather than adding lots of additional links on the website. Have fun and enjoy. Any problems please do contact me via email. I look forward to hearing about how it goes. Mrs Sealy [email protected]

As a warm up before each session the children could play ‘Hit the button’ game to practise their mental maths skills. I recommend the children playing on number bonds, doubles, halves and times tables. The children are familiar with this website

Maths- Lesson 1- 2D Shape hunt

Activity ideas: • Go a 2D shape hunt around the garden or house- and make a tally

chart to record what you found. Worksheet available on following slide. Can you add the properties e.g. how many corners and sides.

• On your daily walk you could look for 2D shapes out in the environment- you could take photographs and then print off and write the shape name and properties of shape e.g. On this front door I found a square. A square has 4 corners and 4 sides.

• Draw some 2D shapes and write about their properties e.g. a rectangle has 4 sides, 2 shorter sides and 2 longer sides. It has 4 corners.

• Create a fact page about some 2D shapes.

In todays maths session I would the children to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of 2D shapes. The children should be able to name a range of 2D shapes and discuss the properties. For example they should know that a rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners, but 2 long sides and 2 short sides. Below is a shape song for the children to watch. On The following slide I have attached a 2D shape mat for reference.

Lesson 2- 3D Shape and their properties.

In todays lesson I would like the children to name and explore the properties of 3D shapes. First of all ask your child if they know the difference between a 2D and 3D shape. What is the difference? Can you give any examples? A 2D shape is any shape that can be laid flat on a piece of paper A 3D shape is a solid object that have three dimensions. The link below is a video to explain and name some 3D and 2D shapes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxoLlSTu1jo After watching the video can they name any more 3D shapes?

Properties of 3D shapes Ask the children to go on a hunt around the house or garden to find any 3D shapes and make a collection.

What 3D shapes did you find?

Page 9: Leopard Class Week 2- 27.4.20 Weekly Maths ideas

Properties of 3D shapes Now that you have a collection of 3D shapes- have a look at them- what do you notice? How many edges? How many vertices? How many faces? Watch the video below to help you with shape properties : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nLpD6bE4fE Discuss the 3D shapes and their properties- count together how many edges, vertices and faces each shape has? When we talk about 3D shapes, we talk about faces, edges and vertices. The faces are the flat parts of the shape. The edges are the lines where two faces meet. The vertices are the points where two or more edges meet. For example, this 3D shape has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices:

On the following slides are some more examples and a possible worksheet activity.

Lesson 3- 2D and 3D shapes Now that the children are more familiar with 2D and 3D shapes, I would like them to go on a shape finding mission around the house/garden. You could start the session by playing I spy- e.g. I spy a shape that has 3 corners and 3 sides what is my shape? I spy a shape that 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices what is my shape? Activity ideas: - Adult gives the children the properties of either a 2D or 3D shape and

the child has to go and find that shape in the house/garden and bring it back to you. This helps to ensure they understand about shape properties and are to recognise 2D and 3D shapes. E.g. I want a shape that has 4 corners and 4 sides, 2 short sides and 2 long sides. Hopefully the child would bring back something rectangular.

- On the following slides there are some worksheets if you would prefer for your child to complete a worksheet

- Below are some shape games which they could play https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/24473.html https://mathszone.co.uk/category/shape/2d-3d-shapes/

Lesson 4- WANTED shape poster

In todays lesson I would like the children to use everything they have learnt about 2D and 3D shapes and write a WANTED poster for a chosen 2D or 3D shape. The shape they choose could have done something naughty and needs capturing. The children will need to describe what the shape looks like by describing its properties and feature. On the following slides I have put a template (which you could print out) and an example. First pick either a 2D or 3D shape Draw the shape and think of a name e.g. Percy Pentagon or Colin Cube Think about the properties of the shape- how many sides, corners, faces, edges or vertices does it have? Think about why your shape is wanted for e.g. Percy Pentagon is wanted for stealing children’s money from money boxes. Is there a reward? 3000 chocolate squares or 100 cones

Maths- Lesson 5 I have put a task on Mathletics for the children to complete- it will be available on Friday morning until Sunday evening. This is a good way for me to see how the children are developing in these skills and how and where I can further support their learning. The task incorporates all learning from the suggested 4 lessons. https://login.mathletics.com/ Have fun. Well done on your maths learning this week.
