Jesus. And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him. "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? `Father, save me from this hour'? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify thy name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." He said this to show by what death he was to die.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings

As Holy Week and Easter draws closer, let us keep our gaze on the Great Vigil of Easter, easily considered to be the most important service of the Christian year - if we were ever to rank the church’s liturgy.

It is an awesome liturgical rite that takes us as it were from Good Friday to the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection at Easter.

We enter the Easter/PaschalTriduum on the evening of Maundy Thursday as we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday is part of the one observance of Jesus’ glorification which leads into the Great Easter Vigil and the celebration of the resurrection.

There was a time when one can recall this service being held late on Holy Saturday so that midnight marked as it were the moment of resurrection with the singing of the Easter Anthem.

Professor Patrick Regan explains that current liturgical texts have in some sense moved away from “a moment of resurrection” and see the service with its four parts woven together as a dual thematic, namely, Jesus life-giving passion, as well as his passage through death to new life.

The four parts of the liturgy are (a) The Paschal Candle is lit, (b) we hear the readings, (c) renew our baptismal vows and (d) make out communion at the vigil mass as we celebrate the return of the Bridegroom. (Matthew 9:15 Mark 2:19, Luke 5:35).

It is mostly now done in the evening, just after sundown. Of course it is a Mass of Vigil, so it demands, as Professor Kevin Irwin always states that we attend Holy Mass on the following day.

In the vigil, as part of our christian spirituality, we seek to ritualize those amazing events in which our Lord brought us eternal salvation.

Within the context of our Lenten discipline which started on Ash Wednesday, we ought to have been planning for the Easter weekend. Let it be part of our commitment to participate in the various rites.

Such participation helps us not only to live to our christian obligation; but assists our understanding as we call to mind the acts that brought the Christian Church into being

It is one thing to read about it the rites in a brief article like this one; but quite another to participate in the sacred mysteries leading to the fifty days of Easter.

Wednesday 25th March is referred to as Lady Day in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Morning Prayer will be said at 6:00 The Mothers’ Union will be in special attendance. Holy Mass from 7:00pm - 7:30pm as usual in the evening.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS The final Stations of the Cross for this Lenten season will be held this Friday evening at 6:00pm. Please all make a special effort to attend.

PALM SUNDAY In preparation for next Sunday (Palm Sunday) we are asking persons to come to the church hall on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm to assist with the making of palm crosses. Bring out your family and friends next Sunday.

ANNUAL BARBECUE Tickets are on sale for the St. David’s Barbecue which will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Car Park. Contribution: Adults $45:00; Children: $25:00. It is important that we all assist with the sale of tickets.

HEALTH GUILD WALK On Saturday, 28th March, at 5:30 a.m. leave the Church Hall and walk in the direction of Cox Road, Edey Village, turn left at Frere Pilgrim and head to the Boarded Hall roundabout. Turn left and go towards South District, turn left at Egerton and return to St. David.
