CHAPTER 34: JOSEPH LOGAN - -4

Emeline Haggard was born in Perry County, Illinois. Lemuel Logan was a laborer. Source: Marriage Certificate, Perry County, Illinois; Illinois Statewide Marriage Index Note: The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index has her name “Emaline.”

Emeline Haggard Logan dies, Perry County, Illinois, 1895 Lem Logan and Emeline Haggard Logan’s marriage ended tragically less than a year after their wedding. Emeline Haggard Logan died of complications from childbirth after giving birth to twin boys. She died at her parents’ (Samuel and Martha Haggard) home. Emeline Haggard Logan’s tombstone in Haggard-Pick Cemetery, just off Highway 154 east of Pinckneyville, reads: Emeline Logan Dau. of S & M Haggard Died January 15, 1895 Aged 27 yr. 1 m. 1 d. Also her two infant sons On the tombstone is this inscription: Dear Emeline, you are gone but not forgotten.

According to Emeline Haggard Logan’s probate records (Probate Box #316), Lem Logan, Samuel H. Gass and Ben A. Gass -- Lem Logan’s brothers-in-law -- affixed their signatures to an Administrator’s Bond in the presence of a notary public 30 January 1895. Lem Logan was the administrator of his wife’s estate. On the Administrator’s Bond are four signatures: Lem Logan, Samuel H. Gass, Ben A. Gass, and E.F. Logan (Enoch F. Logan).

The inventory of Emeline’s estate (spelled “Emaline”) -- “the personal property, goods and chattels” -- contains: •1 gray mare •One bay horse 3 years old •1 organ •One sewing machine •One hutch •1 bureau •1 bed bedstead and bedding •1 Trunk •3 chairs •1 Rocking chair •One center Table •1 Carpet •1 (????) •3 chairs (•?) •“and other articles as per appraisment bill”

The document notes, “That your Petitioner is of the opinion that he can sell them at Private Sale to better advantage and realize more for said articles than if Put up at Public sale.” Lem Logan signed this document 29 April 1895.

The Appraisement Bill for the estate lists the following articles and their appraised value. 1 Horse $20.00 1 Colt $20.00 1 Organ $25.00 1 Bed “Sted” and “beading” $15.00

CHAPTER 34: JOSEPH LOGAN - -6

Another interesting document is one which delineates Lem Logan’s “Report of his acts and doings” -- his Administrator’s Report -- from “the 5th day of February 1895 to the April Term A.D. 1896.” This documents who purchased the items Lem Logan put up for sale from his wife’s estate. Among the names and purchases are:

•Robert Logan, Lem’s brother, for the bay horse •A.J. Logan (Andrew Jackson Logan), Lem’s father, for the gray mare •L.J. Guthrie for the organ, center table, carpet, chair “tidys,” napkins, “and etc.” •Catherine Logan, his mother, for 2 bed quilts •S.H. (Sam) Gass, the valise •Lottie (Logan) Gass, the bureau •Joseph Elliott purchased the watch. (Joseph Elliott would later become Lem’s brother-in-law after Lem’s second marriage to Margaret Elliott.) •Maggie Logan bought the sewing machine, bedstead and bedding, 4 chairs, a table cloth, 4 towels, several quilts, and the pen holder. Note: As Sharon Purcell Wright commented (Maggie Logan was her grandmother): Maggie was “getting her ‘hope chest’ together ... (since) she was married late that year (31 Dec. 1896).”

In another document, Lem Logan states that the value of the personal estate was about two hundred dollars and “That said deceased left surviving her Lem Logan her husband and one child.” This document is dated 23 January 1895. So one of the boys died at or near childbirth while the other lived for several months.

A part of the probate record consists of bills filed against the estate. One is from Lem Logan’s father, Andrew Jackson Logan (“AJ Logan” in the document). The bill is “For nursing and Taking care of Infant child of deceased from the 17 day of January 1895 to the 17th day of July 1895” One hundred Dollars

Another bill is a claim by Martha A. Haggard, Emaline’s mother, for “waiting on deceased, boarding her, and for general services furnished her and for wear and injury to household goods, during her last illness from Dec. 26, 1894 to Jany. 15/95, 20 days @$5 per day. To boarding hired help 5 weeks. (To boarding) deceased’s sister-in-law during the sickness of deceased, 3 weeks.” The total bill was $112. So the Haggard family and Logan family split the nursing and caregiving duties.

Other bills included this compilation signed by Lem Logan 4 November 1895: •$30 for the coffin and “Preparing body of deceased for burial” •$17 to the druggist for medicine for Emeline •$7 for dry goods and groceries -- “last Illness of deceased” •$2.50 “for spirits used as medicine for deceased” •$3.00 for “burial of deceased” •$6.00 for ?

In the midst of grieving, a legal matter arose. Martha A. Haggard, Emeline's mother, sued the “Estate of Emaline Logan deceased” -- Lem Logan being the Administrator. In the Probate records are subpoenas for witnesses for both the plaintiff and defendant. Martha’s husband, Samuel Haggard, Emeline’s father, “respectfully submits his exceptions to the report filed ... “ by Lem Logan as administrator. There are four items of contention.

The judgment of the court was that “the only claims allowed by this court” are “one In favor of M L McCandless for Fifty-Two Dollars [the doctor] and one to Martha A Haggard for fifty Dollars.” The “Claim against Emaline Logan dec’d by Lem Logan” was dismissed. This document was filed 4 November 1895.

CHAPTER 34: JOSEPH LOGAN - -7

At some time, the other Logan baby died as well, as noted on the tombstone for “Emeline Logan and her two infant sons,” but there is no record of it in the probate records (the children’s deaths having no bearing on the probate proceedings). From the Andrew Jackson Logan claim (above), it appears the baby died 17 July 1895, six months to the day from when Catherine Charlotte Guthrie Logan and Andrew Jackson Logan began to care for their grandchild.

Looking in on this sad situation a century later, we see the effects of the hard feelings engendered between the grieving parents and son-in-law. One example is that no Haggards are involved in the sale and purchase of household items from the estate. Another is that the parents felt compelled to sue the estate, concerned about the time it was taking to settle. Reflection on the year 1910 Daughter, Roberta “Flossie” Logan, died and son, Robert Logan, was born days later. In May, Lem Logan’s’s father, Andrew Jackson Logan, died. Lem had now lost 4 children, his mother and father, and his first wife. Two of Margaret Elliott Logan’s children had died.

Reflection on the year 1911 The year 1911 was another challenging one. Daughter, Mary Margaret Logan, was born and died. Margaret’s mother, Jane Elliott, also died. These deaths perhaps were one of the catalysts for the family’s subsequent move to Iowa (speculation). “We were in Tilden from 1907-1911.” Source: Quote from L.A. Logan, son of Lem and Margaret Elliott Logan, 10 July 1980

Move to Washington County, Iowa, 1912 The Lem and Margaret Elliott Logan family moved to Crawfordsville, Washington County, Iowa, in 1912. Soon after they moved, son Lawrence was going to school when a blizzard hit -- unexpectedly in those days before radar and scientific weather tracking. He said he didn’t have gloves and the blizzard was a shock after moving from southern Illinois. He still vividly recalled the experience in 1979 or 1980 when he related the story.
