Welcome to our Course Directory

Last year 20,000 people from all backgrounds across the city used Birmingham Adult Education Service to improve their knowledge and job prospects. Our Adult Education Service is for everyone and we are proud that our learners enjoy their studies and use the skills they’ve gained to improve their lives.

Is this the year you choose to improve your English, maths, IT skills, learn a language or gain the qualifications and skills needed for employment, self-employment or higher level learning? Through learning many people also increase their confidence, health and well-being and enjoyment of life. With over 2,500 courses to choose from in over a hundred local venues across the city, we’re confident you’ll find a course that appeals to you.

Birmingham has an Adult Education Service to be proud of. It was rated as “Good” by Ofsted in April 2014. In 2013 success rates improved for the third year running. Learner satisfaction scores also improved for the third year running and are amongst the highest in the city. Centres are welcoming and safe, staff are friendly and helpful and there is good support available. If you’re worried about cost of courses and are on a low income, a job seeker or on other income based benefits, you’ll be pleased to know that many courses are free or discounted. Our friendly staff will be happy to give you more details. They will also give you information and advice on courses to make sure you join the right course at the right level.

Never used a computer before? These are the courses for you.Don’t worry, we all have to start somewhere! This course will start with the very basics - turning your PC on, using a mouse and navigating around your computer. At the end of the course you will be able to confidently type a piece of work on a computer and be ready to continue your IT or other studies.

I.T. and Business

A man with a plan!While searching on the internet to help his daughter with her homework Daneil realised he was really enjoying learning new things. He’d always thought that he would come back to education at some point and this seemed as good a time as any. Daneil got advice on what courses were available and enrolled on Maths and ECDL level 2 courses. Quickly back into the swing of learning he finished his computer qualification within 3 months. He joined a touch typing course and when that was finished he squeezed in a Computerised Accounts course. He is achieving great results and Maths and English GCSEs with more Accounts courses are lined up ready for next year.Through Daneil’s hard work and obvious enjoyment of learning his 2 year plan to get onto a Foundation Degree course combining Computer Science with Maths is still right on track.

Computers for Beginners

Keeping up with the family!Paul plucked up the courage to join the First Step computer course at Hart Centre when he realised his lack of IT skills was meaning he was getting left behind and had no understanding of the technology his children were effortlessly using. Furthermore, in his role as a school governor, he was starting to find it increasingly difficult to keep up to date with important communications that were often being sent only by email. He was finding himself out of touch at home and struggling with other important day-to-day activities.Two years on he is about to finish his ECDL Level 2 qualification, is now confident with computers and can help his daughter with her GCSE homework if she ever needs it.

When Paulette completed her Floristry qualification course she was unsure about what to do next. She had always liked getting rooms ready for parties and events and her friends and family had told her that she had a flair for doing it. She had been thinking for a while that it would be great to start her own business and make a career out of something she really enjoyed. She decided to join our Business Startup course where she worked through her ideas and plans. She came away convinced she had a viable business.With Annette her business partner she set up Epithany Designs who provide specialise in transforming venues for business or celebration events. The business has been up and running for over 12 months and they continue to grow and spread throughout the country their expertise at giving events the WOW factor.

Are your English or Maths skills stopping you from getting on?

We run many courses for adults who want to become more confident in reading, writing, maths and spoken English. Improving these skills can be the beginning of the road to achieving your long term goals.

Whether it’s getting a job, a promotion or enrolling on a further or higher education course, having the qualifications to show you have the right level of English and maths skills has never been more important.

If English is your second language and you need to build your confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, then an ESOL course is right for you.

Our courses will help you to:• Brush up your reading and writing skills.

• Develop good communication skills.

• Improve your employability skills eg. how to apply for a job, write a CV, perform well at interview.

• Improve your English grammar and punctuation skills.

• Improve your spelling.

• Build confidence in working with numbers and apply maths skills to real life situations.

How much will a course cost? English and Maths courses are FREE to UK and EU citizens.

ESOL courses are free for people on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or other eligible income based benefits who are doing the course to help gain employment in the future.

Other learners may be eligible for significantly discounted fees.

How do I join an English, Maths or ESOL course?1. Look at the table on Page 16 to find a centre that does the subject you want.2. Phone the centre or call in and tell them which course you are interested in.3. They will book you a time to come in for a Skills Check.Skills Checks will take place from Tuesday 2nd September to Friday 12th September 2014

Please try to phone or book ahead. There may not be room if you just turn up on the day during the enrolment weeks.If you miss these weeks, phone us anyway and we will let you know when the next Skills Checks are taking place.After your Skills Check, the centre staff will offer you a place on a course at the right level at a time that suits you. If there are no suitable courses at that centre, we will refer you to another nearby centre.Things to bring to your Skills Check

• Your passport

• Proof of any benefits you receive

• Certificates from any English, Maths or ESOL qualifications you already have.

Please note: Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to look after children while you do your Skills Check. Please arrange for someone to look after them while you are being assessed.

The desire to get on in a new countryNadine has only recently come over to England from Russia. Although she gained qualifications back in Russia she quickly found she needed to get new ones in the UK if she was going to be able to get suitable work. During her English studies she has worked tirelessly to improve her written and spoken skills and has constantly pushed herself. Nadine’s progress has been so rapid that her tutor made the rare decision of moving her up a level mid year. She has coped brilliantly with the higher level and her thirst for knowledge shows no signs of stopping. She has recently started to work as a volunteer helping other learners to succeed in classes. Being able to communicate will help Nadine to make a successful life for herself and family in the UK.

Determined to make her ambitions happen Nina has overcome many difficulties in her life to get to where she is today. A medical problem has always made writing very difficult and when she enrolled on her first course Nina needed additional support.However, she soon started to believe that the right support combined with her hard work meant it was possible to gain the skills and qualifications she needed to follow her career choice.The successes she has so far achieved on English, Maths and Childcare courses means she has already made a solid foundation for her further childcare studies. Next steps are to achieve her GCSEs and then a Level 3 Childcare Qualification.Her tutors are sure she will get the success her hard work and commitment to learning deserve.

A GCSE in English, Maths or a Science could help you to achieve your career goalsNot able to start higher education until you’ve got the right GCSEs? Can’t get the job you want without the right qualifications?

Nowadays to get many jobs, or if you are thinking about going onto a further education course, you will need to have at least five GCSEs or their equivalent, including Maths, English and increasingly Science.

How do I join a GCSE course?1. Identify the course that you are interested in joining. 2. Phone the centre or call in and tell them which course you are interested in joining. Or the Information Line

will support you.3. You will be given a time to come in for an assessment.Assessments will take place from Monday 1st September to Saturday 13th September 2014.Because of the demands of the course, assessments for GCSEs are very in depth and as such, you should allow 2 hours to complete the process. In order to give our team sufficient time to mark your work, your results will not be available until one week after completing the assessment. If the marking team decide that a GCSE course is not suitable for you, alternative courses will be discussed.

How much will it cost?English and Maths GCSE courses are FREE for learners 19 or over who do not already have an A*-C grade in that subject.

Could you make a difference to people’s lives?Working in Health & Social Care can provide you with a challenging but enjoyable and rewarding career. The courses in this section are a perfect way to gain the skills needed and find out more about the wide range of professions in this job sector.

Our childcare and classroom work qualifications can open the door to a variety of careers, ranging from playwork and childminding to nursing.

Or you may wish to follow the route which leads to getting work in a school environment supporting children and teachers.

If you think you would prefer to work with adults and work as a support worker or a care assistant our courses will allow you to explore your options and decide which is the best career path for you.

You will gain qualifications that are nationally recognised by employers and are designed to demonstrate your abilities and achievements.

Not sure which type of course would suit your skills best?If you think you need to brush up your English skills first we recommend that you join our entry level course. This will help you prepare for the level 1 course where you focus on finding out which career path suits you best. If you already have English at Level 1 or above you’re ready to jump straight in on the level 1 course.

Making sure you’ve got the right qualifications to get a jobThese types of jobs hold positions of responsibility and employers will expect you to have appropriate levels of Maths, English and computer skills as well as your work related qualifications.

If you aren’t sure how good yours currently are, or you think they may be a bit rusty, don’t be put off finding out more about the courses on offer. Our staff are available to guide and advise you on the skills requirement and anything you may need to do to fill any gaps.

Award or Certificate?The Certificate is a wider qualification which prepares learners more fully for the demands of the level 2 course. Both the Award and Certificate are delivered as part of a package to help you gain qualifications in IT, Workskills, English and Maths. level 3 qualification - it will be free. • If you are aged between 19 and 23 but you already have a level 3 qualification you’ll be

eligible for a discounted fee. • If you are 24 or above on the start date of your course you will have to pay the full fee. Over 24 and not sure how to pay for a Level 3 qualification course? If you can’t afford to pay it all when you enrol, you may be able to apply for a 24 plus advanced learning loan. This could be either for all or part of the course fee. You must meet eligibility rules but your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You don’t have to pay anything back until April 2016 and not until your income is over £21,000 a year. Determined to overcome all obstacles Hollie has shown outstanding commitment and immense dedication in overcoming the challenges and difficulties she faced when she first started her childcare course. As well as being pregnant, very early on in the course Hollie informed her tutor that she was dyslexic. Extra support was provided in class to help her to be successful in her studies. She made sure she attended all her classes while pregnant and returned to class only 2 weeks after having had her baby.Hollie has another young child too and the efforts she goes to in order to juggle her family life to make sure that she is able to attend classes is a great credit to her. Her tutor says, “Hollie has shown that no challenge should stop any committed learner from achieving their learning goals.”

Charlie is a very determined 18 year old who wants to succeed. She didn’t enjoy school and spent most of year 10 hiding from teachers. However in the last year at school she started to turn her life around and gained some qualifications. She left school and went to college to study Health & Social Care. It wasn’t for her though and she left after the first year.Last September she came along to enrolment at Kingstanding Centre and asked about a career in classroom work. She enrolled on a course but knew she also needed to improve her Maths skills to take her career further. She phoned her Learner Support Manager practically every week until a place was found for her. Charlie loves her placement at the YMCA and has already been offered work there. She now knows where she wants to get and you’d be wise not to bet against her achieving it.

Courses for Adults with Learning DisabilitiesWe run courses for adults with learning disabilities across the city.The courses aim to help learners become more confident, more independent and improve their communication and social skills. Certificates are awarded on successful completion. There’s lots to choose from. Most of our courses run for 2 hours per week.

Supported Learning

6 years ago Ann suffered a stroke that initially left her without speech. When she joined the floral craft class at Northfield Centre she was very quiet and shy when classmates tried to speak to her. To help her complete her portfolio extra support in class was organised. During their time together, Ann started to open up and talk to her helper. It turned out that Ann had an exciting past. Having trained as an opera singer, she had performed all around the world, been the lead singer in a jazz band and supported many famous bands.The confidence that Ann has gained has allowed her to let us in to see the real bright, bubbly woman who was always there. She has now started to learn British Sign Language to communicate with other learners and help them have their voice heard too.

Learning a language opens so many doors…Teaching languages is my passion. It is more than teaching grammar and learning vocabulary. I give people the opportunity to open the door to another culture. I enjoy helping my learners to discover the differences but also similarities between the German and the British culture.

There are so many reasons why learners choose to come to my class. They want to have a better chance in the job market, plan to move to a German speaking country, work for a German company, have German speaking friends or relatives, or are simply interested in the German language and culture.

Some of the learners who are joining my class have never had any language learning experience. It is my passion to help them to discover the joy of learning a new language. I feel privileged to be part of a very professional and passionate language team. Gabriella - German Tutor

A love of the Italian language Yvette has been a committed and avid learner with our service for many years. She is a determined, ambitious and driven character who does not let her blindness get in the way of where she wants to get to or to achieve. Yvette’s love of the Italian language brought her to Brasshouse Language Centre where she has worked her way through many courses and levels of the language. As the levels have got higher the studies have become more academic and Yvette has needed to access more staff support and specialist equipment to help her achieve. Yvette is now completing her A level and is determined to keep improving her Italian.

A lifetime of experiences and knowledge to share.After a long and successful work-life, last year Brian decided to return to education and completed his English GCSE course. What made Brian so successful on this course was that he would draw on seven decades of life experience and include it in his work. During the lessons Brian’s tutor was particularily impressed by his ability to invoke images, memories and express emotions in his writing. Some of the work he produced was of such a high standard that that his tutor was convinced that it should be published.With her encouragement Brian now intends to start a creative writing class and polish up his skills amongst his fellow writers. He is a fantastic example that learning can truly be a lifelong journey - we are sure he has many interesting stories still to tell.

The taste of successA creative man with an entrepreneurial spirit.During the last few years Michael has attended

courses to perfect his Sugarcraft & Cake Decorating

skills and has recently opened his own shop -

Cake Moda in Acocks Green.

While talking to the customers who were ordering their wedding cakes he realised there was a gap in the market - so he decided to broaden his skills further. He returned to classes to learn floristry so he could create a one-stop solution for all his customers’ wedding needs. So far he has successfully sold his floral designs for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day in his shop. He plans to make the floristry service permanent when he is qualified. Michael, through a combination of his creative talents and the long hours he works to establish his shop, deserves to make his blossoming business a success.

How to join a course You can enrol on most of our leisure courses (marked with Y) from Monday 7th July by calling our Information Line or going online.

This will give you and the tutor the opportunity to discuss the requirements of the course and make sure it is right for you.

During Enrolment Weeks: For qualification courses (marked N) go along to the centre where the course is running on the listed day and time.For leisure courses (marked Y) you can enrol at centres where places are still available. To avoid disappointment we advise learners wishing to do a leisure course to enrol by telephone or online before the end of August.

IMPORTANT: Information for Job Seekers If you are currently on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA/WRAG), you may be referred to BAES for a course by your Job Centre Plus adviser.If attending a course is part of your benefit agreement, Job Centre Plus will usually pay for your travel and child care costs. Exam FeesThere is an exam fee for all qualification courses, however for some learners the exam entry will be free depending on the course and your personal circumstances. Please ask staff for details. For Level 3 courses the exam fee is already included in the published course fee.

DiscountsProvided you meet residency requirements, there are also discounts on many of our standard course fees, including:

24+ Advanced Learning Loan

Important Information

24+ Loans for Level 3 coursesIf you are over 24 and studying a level 3 course, then you must either pay the full cost of the course or take out a loan for all or part of the course fee. The loans are administered by the Student Loans Company. Ask Centre staff for details or go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans.The Level 3 qualification will be free if you are under 24 and taking your first full level 3 qualification.

European Community/EEA learners You must provide proof of your status at enrolment. Provided you meet eligibility criteria, full fees, concessions and discounts apply.

International learners (non EC/EEA)The minimum course fee is £9.50 per hour. For details on the residency requirements needed to qualify for Skills Funding Agency funded courses, please ask at your local centre.

Payment of Fees Learners will only be allowed to attend the class when the agreed course fee has been paid or direct debit instalment plan arranged.

Can I pay by credit/debit card?We accept payment by cash, cheque, credit and debit card at our main centres. In our smaller centres we can accept cheques and make arrangements for you to pay your fees by other methods if needed.

Can I pay by instalment?If you are on a Leisure course (marked Y) that runs for more than 1 term, you may pay termly. If you are enrolled on a course leading to a qualification (marked N) which is longer than 12 weeks (1 term), you can pay in 3 monthly instalments at your Centre. This means if you enrol on a long course in September you must complete your payments by 30th November 2014.

We also have available a Direct Debit Scheme when paying fees for qualification courses (marked N) which are 20 weeks or longer and cost over £300. An initial first payment of 25% of the total fee is taken followed by 3 payments to cover the remaining balance.

What if my employer is paying my fees?If your employer is paying your fees, you must show this on your enrolment form. You must also provide a letter from your employer confirming their willingness to pay at the time of enrolment. Once your employer has confirmed they are willing to pay your fees, we will invoice them.

RefundsCourse fees are only refundable if we have to close the course, or you withdraw from your course before it starts. Please see our website for full terms and conditions or ask at your local centre.

Financial Support If you are on an eligible Qualification course (most courses marked N) and claiming JSA, ESA (Work Related Activity Group), on another Income Based Benefit, or on a low income and experiencing financial hardship, you may be eligible to apply for help with course fees, exam fees, childcare and other costs related to your study. Some of the key support funds are listed below:

Support FundThis fund is mostly used to help with the costs of course fees, exam fees and childcare. To apply you must be on an eligible Qualification course (most courses marked N). You will need to provide evidence that you are on a low income and/or experiencing financial hardship. You will normally be expected to make a contribution towards your course and exam fees. Support funds are also available for learners who are over the age of 24 and are on a Level 3 course.Under normal circumstances we do not provide childcare funding for children aged 3 years and over. This is because the Government provides free childcare places for this age group. Some learners will also be entitled to free Government childcare for 2 year olds.

16-19 Bursary FundThis is a Government scheme to help young people facing financial hardship to stay in education. The bursary will be dependent on your circumstances.

Travelling to our CentresUnfortunately there is only limited parking at most of our centres. We therefore encourage learners if possible to use public transport. To find out which buses or trains run near to the centre please look on our website or call the Information Line.NB. At Bournville there is no on-site parking, learners are advised that there is a Pay & Display car park on Bristol Road.
