PrograM goals

The British Music Experience is the UK’s Museum of Popular Music. Boasting an unrivalled collection of stage outfits, objects and instruments, the museum charts the beginnings, rise and influence of British pop from 1945 to the present day.

Education trips to the British Music Experience include full access to the galleries, learning zones, instrument studio and dance area as well as a tour of the gallery led by our Education Officer. Education groups can also book onto one of our innovative and exciting workshops, catering from key stage 1 right up to sixth form level.

Our programme of workshops cater for a range of ages and abilities and cover a variety of curriculum areas.

Go back in time and discover how Shakespeare has more in common with current hip-hop artists then you might first think. In this surprising show, students explore the language conventions present in classic literature, modern day prose and lyrics. It encourages pupils to challenge their expectations and compare and contrast their findings.

From Harry Potter to Star Wars, music is used to set pace and tone. In this highly interactive, lively and energetic workshop students will explore how music is used in films to convey mood and emotion. Students will get the chance to explore technologies where they can compose their own scores set to a variety of genres.

Music is more than just a soundtrack to our lives, it has an enormous impact on the way we live them too. From the clothes we wear to the stories in the news, discover how popular music has shaped our society. This fun and engaging workshop takes you back in time to the end of the Second World War using stories, music and objects from the museum’s collection.

History, Music, Art & Design, Creative & Media Studies

Explore the youth movements that have emerged in the UK as a result of social change. Through an interactive pop quiz highlighting the music and fashions that have emerged from these movements, students explore the social and political reasons for the rise of famous styles from Mods and Rockers to Hippies and Punks.

Bring music to life in our interactive, fully functional state of the art music studio. Whether its drums, keyboard or guitar you’re interested in we want every student to get involved in and have a go. You never know, you might discover you have a Beethoven, Clapton or Hendrix in your midst!

We also have a voice recording studio and a dance booth for those aspiring little singers and dancers.
