HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Learning Power leaders sought additional funding opportunities to develop South Dakota’s capacity for meeting the needs of high-level learners.USED awarded Advanced Placement Incentive Program (APIP) grant to TIE for engaging eligible SD school districts in Pre-AP and AP program development.Today is the launch of the Pre-AP initiative involving 17 SD school districts in a three-year professional development activity.

GOAL OF LEARNING POWER PRE-AP INITIATIVE

To build the capacity of educators for providing rigorous, relevant curriculum and instruction in grades 7-12 mathematics, science, and English content so more students are prepared for participation in AP coursework.

PRE-AP INITIATIVE TIMELINESummer School Year Spring

Participants will

•study vertical alignment of curriculum •learn concrete strategies and models for teaching skills in order to prepare students for the rigor of Advanced Placement* courses and success in college.

Participants will

•engage in online studies facilitated by content specialist•continue the progress implemented in the Summer Institute•integrate concepts and lessons as appropriate into curriculum areas•develop as a professional learning community supporting colleagues

Participants will

•attend 3-day spring conference collaborating with Pre-AP colleagues•reflect on growth and success of strategies and models

SUMMER INSTITUTE – JULY 21 - 24, 2009Black Hills State University Campus

Teachers from content areas come together to work with TIE Content Specialists, Laying the Foundation and CAMSE

Focus starts with the middle school years

Science – Grades 6 through 9Math – Grade 6 through Algebra 1English – Grades 6 through 10

Need upper level content teachers as we align/design rigorous curriculum which prepares students for AP courses

TUITION AND USF CREDIT

Want college credit?

If you will be attending all three days (Sunday through Tuesday), you are eligible to take the TIE Conference for graduate credit. If you choose to do so, Learning Power will cover University of Sioux Falls tuition expenses BUT you will need to register with June following our session!

TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT

If you travelled in a school vehicle, you will need to complete a separate voucher with the school district info in the Name and Address sections (see back of voucher).
