We hope and pray you find these tips useful in your quest to introduce your church to the online surfers. Designs Ideas to consider when planning to design or redesign a church web site May 15-21 is set aside in the SBC for a Week of Prayer for Associational Missions. On occasion we have churches who want to participate in the TEBA or a church planter will who ask important questions such as “Why does denominational affiliation matter?” or “How does being part of a denomination positively impact the local church?”. One of the best answers to these questions comes from George Bullard, of the Columbia Partnership (www.BullardJournal.org ) in an article Bullard wrote in 2006 he addresses these questions as follows: Why Does Your Congregation Want a Denominational Affiliation? Does your congregation need a denomination? The short answer is “No.” The long answer is that a denominational relationship is not essential to the vitality of your congregation. It is optional. The fastest growing denomination in North America is said to be non-denominational. If that is the case, then why are so many congregations affiliated with a denomination? Why are so many new congregations affiliated with denominations? Why are so many congregations who are disenchanted with their denomination choosing to affiliate with another denomination, including newly emerging denominations? Perhaps a better question is, does your congregation want a denominational affiliation? The short answer is probably “Yes.” The long answer is that a denominational relationship is perceived as essential by many congregations if they are to reach their full kingdom potential. It is indispensable. Probably the best question is, what is it about a denominational relationship that looks so attractive to your congregation? What real benefits are you looking for in a relationship with a denomination? Try these answers on for size. First, congregations value a relationship with other congregations. Christianity is all about relationships. Relationships with God, one another, and the context in which the congregation serves are important. Congregational leaders like having a community of other leaders with whom they can regularly relate. It is helpful if these are leaders with whom they are not in competition, but collaboration. These relationships are particularly important to clergy who desire security in ministry. Second, congregations value affiliation with a denomination where the denomination is on a GlobaLocal mission. They want to be part of a movement to fulfill their unique understanding of the Great Commission and Great Commandment. They see movement vs. institution as a clear distinction between denominations about which congregations are excited, and those about which they are passive. Institutionalized denominations are losing congregations and members. Movements are gaining. Third, congregations want the sense of identity, heritage, and security they receive from being related to a denomination. This is no small factor for congregational leaders and members. Particularly for members 55 or more years old, these are critical issues for spirituality and identity. For younger members the specific denomination does not matter as much as the need for belonging to something about which they feel passionate. A sense of community is a high priority for them. Fourth, congregations want resources offered by or interpreted by denominations. Certain resources may be directly offered or sold by denominations. Some may be brokered from various denominational and non- denominational sources. In other cases denominations may offer evaluations of or coaching for the use of resources available from various sources. The relevance of these resources to congregations in a diversity of settings is a critical issue for denominations to address. Fifth, congregations want help in dealing with the challenges of ministry. Denominations offer assistance to congregations in trouble, or who are experiencing various challenges. Congregations want the voluntary or authoritative assistance their denominations can provide them. Clergy particularly desire help in the midst of tough ministry situations. Congregations also want the urging of their denomination to be involved in vital ministry. They want their denomination to model this by its own effectiveness. Why does your congregation want a denominational affiliation? The key answer is that your congregational leaders must be clear on its answer to this question. It will increasingly be asked to answer this question by its younger members and potential members. Is your answer ready? (This article may be copied for use by congregational, denominational, and parachurch leaders for non-commercial purposes.) In Kingdom Service, One of the greatest strengths of TEBA is the commitment on the part of all of our member churches to be part of missions through the Cooperative Program. Many of you also participate in mission endeavors in your community and in focused efforts both in the US and around the world. To help us support those mission efforts we are asking you to help us get the word out to other churches that may be able to join you in this mission ministry. You can go to www.teba.org to download the form “Mission Project/Trip Information for 2011” and return it to the TEBA office. (It’s on the main page on the bottom left side-click “On Mission”.) We will compile all of the information together in a summary form and send it out to all of the TEBA churches.
