According to the Oxford dictionary, 'pastiche' originated in the late 19th century: from French, from Italian 'pasticcio', and is based on late Latin pasta 'paste'. It also means an artistic work consisting of a medley of pieces imitating various sources. Here at Le Pastiche we aim at ensuring that products we sell have a distinctive identity, whether made from new materials or recycled. The idea stemmed out of the team's academic background and their awareness about appreciating beauti-ful objects whilst being considerate of artistic and socio-environmental values. Porcelain items are carefully hand painted in Europe whilst the recycled aluminium and wooden goods are made in India and Vietnam. The latter are made from post-consumer recycled goods, mostly food and drinks cans, foil, etc. The porcelain items are dishwasher-friendly, however washing them by hands would preserve better the intricate hand-painting. On the other hand, and in order not to remove the protective coating from the aluminium which may lead to oxi-disation, recycled aluminium goods should always be hand-washed. Mango wood items are made by a small family business in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Supporting a traditional local and highly skilled craft that uses only sustainable wood. The supplier pays an advance to allow the carvers to buy the raw materials. Once the goods are ready, they are collected and paid for.

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and is very environmentally friendly. Items are made in Vietnam by skilled crafts-people. The raw bamboo is cut down into very small strips, softened and then moulded with glue into the shape required. It is then dried in natural sunlight and sanded and polished many times. Finishing involves deli-cate and highly skilled workmanship involv-ing the application by hand of many layers of coloured lacquer to achieve a perfect iri-descent finish.
