5th grade students at Colony Elementary helped dig out over-grown gardens and fill them with new soil as well as building the sides of the beds. The students planted pump-kins seeds and the gar-dens will be used for a life cycle project with Kindergarten students next year.

This spring 4-H classrooms at Hazel Green and Colony schools gained some new additions. Embryolo-gy projects allowed 4-H’ers to experience the develop-ment and hatching process of baby chicks. Youth learned to care for the eggs in their incubators, by checking humidity and temperature and making sure the eggs were being turned each day. Youth also got to candle the eggs to watch the embryos grow over the 21 day incubation period. On hatching day students got to witness the chicks pipping from their shells and learned how to care for them in brooders during their first days. This project is a 4-H favorite, and students have enjoyed learning from this hands-on experience.

4-H Cooking Academy Ten student enrolled in the 4-H Cooking Acad-emy which continued for 3 sessions lasting 2 hours each. Students learned about food basic safety, kitchen basic safety, measuring basics, and then Cooking “How To” Basics. Week One they learned how to make appetizers; individu-al pizzas and smoothies. Week Two they learned how to make side dishes such as scal-loped corn. This recipe required the use of cut-ting skills and measuring. Week Three they learned how to put it all together and make a meal consisting of pasta with homemade sauce, salad and breadsticks. The students then served their parents for a wonderful family meal.
