DID YOU KNOW?Research has consistently shown that consuming alcoholic beverages increases a woman’s risk of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases with the amount of alcohol she consumes. When compared with nondrinkers, women who consume one alcoholic bev-erage per day have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer. But the risk of developing breast cancer is roughly one and a half times greater for those women who consume between two and five alcoholic beverages per day when compared to nondrinkers. Breastcancer.org notes that ex-perts estimate that a woman’s risk of developing breast can-cer increases by 10 percent for each additional drink she con-sumes each day. The risk is considerable for young girls who consume alcohol as well, as teen and tween girls between the ages of nine and 15 who drink three to five drinks per week have three times the risk of developing benign breast lumps, which have been linked to a higher risk of breast can-cer later in life.
