►Statement by Government SpokesmanThe Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou, invited to comment yesterday on the statement of the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser Mr Alexander Downer, who is reported to have said that it will become clear by Friday whether the Cyprus problem can be resolved, said: “I think we must wait; the Cyprus problem is not an easy issue to solve; this has been proven over the years. What we need to do as the Greek Cypriot side, which is part of our share, is to assist in the solution of the Cyprus problem. The President of the Republic began very decisively the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, and will continue in the same way. It does not depend only on the President of the Republic; it depends first and foremost on Turkey, which holds the key to the solution”. Asked on the statement of Mr

Downer, Mr Stefanou said that he did not think that Mr Downer had set a timeframe, “I believe it has to do with the fact that the second all-day meeting on the property issue will take place on Friday. We are waiting to see whether, at the negotiating table, there are prospects for progress on the property issue and whether there are prospects for the process to solve the Cyprus problem to move forward”. Replying to a question on whether the Government considers Mr Downer’s statement a pressure on the Greek Cypriot side, Mr Stefanou said that the President of the Republic said many times that he does not accept any pressure. “The President of the Republic does not simply say what we accept and what we do not accept, but submits proposals, which are balanced and provide a way out both in the efforts to solve the Cyprus issue as well as in speeding up the dialogue. We work on these proposals so that they can be implemented and help in the procedure to solve the Cyprus issue”, Mr Stefanou added.

►Foreign Minister Meets With His Israeli CounterpartThe Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Markos Kyprianou had a meeting on Friday, at the Foreign Ministry, with his Israeli counterpart Mr Αvigdor Liberman. After the meeting, the two

Ministers held talks with the participation of delegations from the two countries’ Foreign Ministries. At the joint press conference which followed, Mr Kyprianou welcomed his Israeli counterpart to Cyprus and said that during their meeting they had the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest, both bilateral issues and regional issues. He noted that they had a significant number of meetings over the last year. “These meetings” he added, “give us the opportunity to update each other about recent developments, but also to discuss how we can take further the relations between the two countries”. He also noted that there is a very broad spectrum of cooperation between Cyprus and Israel in all fields. “The visit of the Israeli Foreign Minister coincides with the launching of direct talks between the two sides in the Middle East peace process and that’s something that the Cyprus Government will very strongly support”, Mr Kyprianou noted. “We believe that it is a very good opportunity to find a solution to the Middle East problem and through these direct talks there is a very good possibility of achieving that”, he said and added: “We

also have a problem that we are trying to resolve through direct talks, we appreciate the fact the negotiations aiming at solving the Middle East are taking place in the context that the solution has to be found between the two sides, by the two sides that are going to live with the solution”. Mr Kyprianou reiterated that the Republic of Cyprus condemns the terrorist attack near the town of Hebron that took the lives of four Israeli civilians and underlined the responsibility of the international community to ensure that these acts do not derail and undermine the peace process.Mr Kyprianou also said that during the meeting he briefed Mr Liberman on the current phase of the talks on the Cyprus problem and on the initiative of President Christofias regarding his proposals that will help boost the negotiation process. He said that the relations between Israel and the EU were discussed as well as the initiative of the Governments of Cyprus and Greece on delivering aid to Gaza. “The EU is supporting this initiative. That is something that is always on the table and it is an issue we continue to discuss” he added. For his part, the Israeli Foreign Minister referred to the various contacts held between the two countries, noting that “this is a sign that Cyprus and Israel have very stable and good relations”. He added that the close cooperation between the two counties can bring benefits to both people, “it’s a win-win situation”, and expressed his readiness to improve and strengthen bilateral relations further. Finally, Mr Liberman underlined that his country appreciates the very clear message and stance of the Republic of Cyprus on the issue of the terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens.

►Excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia 2010The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announced the completion of the latest season of excavations at the Early-Middle Bronze Age (c. 2300–1650 BC) settlement of Kissonerga-Skalia,

which was carried out in July by a University of Manchester team under the direction of Dr Lindy Crewe. The team focused their efforts on revealing further Bronze Age architectural remains, partially exposed during the previous three seasons, in order to address questions of how people lived during the Bronze Age in Kissonerga; how long the site was occupied for; and how local populations interacted with other communities on the island. Kissonerga-Skalia is the first site of this period to be excavated in the southwest of the island and the only known site located by the coast, in contrast to the more usual inland Early-Middle Bronze Age settlement patterns. One of the most striking features of the settlement is the diverse range of architectural styles used by the Bronze Age people of Kissonerga-Skalia. The earliest phase exposed consists of typical multi-roomed rectilinear structures with walls around 80 cm wide, their foundations built from two rows of stones. The houses would have had mud brick upper walls but these collapsed long ago. One full room has now been revealed, with a sequence of at least three

floors, each with features such as plastered pot stands and post supports. Floor deposits are rich in animal bones, edible sea shells, storage jars and cooking pots and the room seems to have had a domestic function. According to the pottery styles in use, the houses seem to have

been abandoned

from the beginning of the Early Cypriot Bronze Age and also attest to contacts with other parts of the island. The University of Manchester team are hopeful that future seasons will reveal these earlier phases preserved beneath later occupation.

before the end of the Middle Cypriot Bronze Age period. To the north of this area the site continued to be occupied right until the threshold of the Late Cypriot Bronze Age (c. 1650 BC). Excavation has revealed a large outdoor space. In the earliest phase exposed thus far the area seems to have been used for cooking. A large ashy mound has several phases of digging of small pits, some with partial pottery vessels placed in the base as lining. The scale is beyond that of the usual household cooking facilities of the period and may have been for communal use. During the latest phase a large, free-standing, furnace-like structure was constructed of mud plaster, perhaps similar in appearance to a traditional village oven. In the ashy deposits of the base was found a partially collapsed large storage jar embedded upright in a pit with a cooking pot at the bottom. The furnace structure is unique in Early-Middle Bronze Age Cyprus.

When the feature was built the space was formalised into a courtyard, with the building of two parallel walls with foundations built of large blocks of limestone and the construction of a plaster floor. On the floor were found whole smashed pottery vessels and a spindle whorl. The unusually wide (1.2 m) rubble wall that was partially uncovered at the northern end of the site in previous seasons was further excavated and the wall now extends for over 22m in length. This season the team established that an unusual method of construction was used to build the wall. A large ditch was dug into a Bronze Age surface and rubble was dumped into the ditch to make the wall’s foundations. On the interior of the wall there is a floor surface with plastered pits, pottery and ground stone tools. Copper slag indicates that metal-working was carried out nearby.Although the excavation has only exposed the latest phases thus far, pottery styles found in the debris indicate a long occupation

adult lives. The Belgian Presidency of the European Union has chosen the fight against child poverty as one of its key priorities. This conference also marks a significant milestone in the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. It will address three main concerns:►How to ensure that children can grow up in families with adequate resources to meet their essential

needs.►How to ensure that children, while growing up, have access to services and opportuni-ties that will enhance their present and future well-being.►How to pro-mote the active participation of children and young people in the decisions that affect them.

Adequate resourcesThe Member States have several methods at their disposal to ensure that families are provided with ad-equate resources. Measures such as setting up minimum income schemes or providing universal child benefits address the financial aspects. Ensuring a better work-life balance for working parents can protect children from “time pov-erty”, which can harm the develop-ment of a child as much as “income poverty”.Access to servicesEarly childhood care and quality inclusive education for all children are essential in reducing inequali-ties. Ensuring affordable quality housing

for families with children, universal health insurance, as well as child-friendly urban and territorial planning are key in the promotion of a child’s well-being. Early intervention and prevention services can support the families most at risk, and help them by providing child care resources to avoid the escalation of problems.Active participationIn line with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child* (1989), which highlights the role of the child as an active participant in the promotion, protection and monitoring of his or her rights, the Member States should be invited to recognise children’s right to be heard and par-ticipate in all decisions that affect them. Giving children the opportu-nity to participate in cultural events, youth work and sports activities can build self-esteem, reduce frustra-tion and support overall learning and well-being. Critical policy reality checkAn interdisciplinary group consisting of 300 experts, practitioners and decision-makers from all Member States will gather to provide a criti-cal reality check on the policies for tackling child poverty. Discussions will be based on a background paper prepared by Eurochild and Unicef (“Call for an EU Recommen-dation on Child Poverty and Child Well-being”). The background paper and the out-come of the conference discussions will feed into the European Com-mission's work towards a Recom-mendation for tackling child poverty and promoting the well-being of children.

LARNACANEWSNEWS

A European Conference on Child Poverty and Child Well-Being will take place in Marche-en-Famenne, Belgium, on September 2nd and 3rd. Organised jointly by the Belgian Presidency of the European Union and the European Commission, it will bring together approximately 300 participants from national ad-ministrations, European institutions, academia, business, as well as European and Belgian stakeholders. The aim of the event is to acceler-ate the political process towards launching a European Commission initiative (Recommendation) to tackle child poverty and promote the well-being of children. In the European Union there are more than 100 million children and young

people in the 0-18 age group. At least 20 million of them risk living in poverty. In the current economic crisis, even more are at risk of falling into poverty. Cuts in income support and child benefits as well as cutbacks hitting schools, healthcare, child protection and regional development are seri-ously affecting the well-being of this vulnerable population group. For almost a decade now, the European Union has declared its commitment to breaking the down-ward spiral of persistent poverty for children who grow up facing poverty or social exclusion, as they are less likely to reach their full potential and are at a greater risk of continu-ing living in poverty throughout their

► International Observe the Moon NightInternational Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) was inspired by people, just like you, who are curious about the Moon and would like to find out more about Earth's nearest neighbor. On August 1, 2009, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team celebrated LRO's successful journey to, and orbital insertion around, the Moon. They hosted a public outreach event called "We're at the Moon!" at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. That same night, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) and NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) EPO teams hosted a similar event at Ames Research Center (ARC) in Moffett Field, CA. Part of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) it was called "National Observe the Moon Night". The goal of both of these events was similar: engage the local

appointed as the National Coordinator for Cyprus for the organisation of Astronomers Without Borders (AWB). The InOMN (International Observe the Moon Night) will take place on Saturday 18th September 2010 at the Larnaca Municipal Gardens. The event will commence at 18:00 and end at 23:00. Listen to the lectures, take part in the workshops, and observe the moon through professional telescopes. LARNACANEWSWHAT'SONproduction of Palouze and Pastelli.Anoyira at this time of the year becomes the focus for a colourful festival – the Pastelli Festival - which celebrates the successful harvest of the carobs that were once one of the main exports in Cyprus and nicknamed ‘the black gold of Cyprus’. Like Zygi, Anoyira was a regional centre for carobs and trained donkeys. A line of six-ten donkeys with panniers laden with carobs would walk down to the wooden jetty that used to stand at Evdhimou. The carobs would be sorted and their precious, evenly-sized seeds would be removed to be sold separately for a higher price whilst the carob pods would be sold by the sackful for animal fodder or ground into powder. The carobs were then stored in the large stone storehouse (charopomilos) until they were needed. This year the festival will be on Saturday 18th September and it takes its name from pastelli - the chewy carob toffee that many of the housewives make from carob syrup -Charoupomelo (teratsemelo in Cypriot dialect). The syrup is also delicious spread on thickly sliced bread or drizzled over Greek Yoghurt. At the festival, everyone is given a bowl of moustokouloura to enjoy. These are small rings of dough served in warm charoupomelo. If you are interested to know more about the carobs, there is a small Pastelli Museum in the heart of the village, which opened a few years ago.

►The Pastelli Festival starts at 6.00 p.m. on Saturday 18th September and everyone is given a traditional meal and a glass of wine. Tickets for the festival can be bought on the night.

►The Pastelli Museum in Anoyira is open 1.00 – 6.00 p.m. daily.

Lofou – celebrating PalouzeNestling in the southern foothills of the Troodos, on a series of hilltops, is the pretty village of Lofou – its name comes from the Greek word meaning ridges.During the 19th century, because the hilly land around the village was not easy to cultivate, many villagers moved down to the flatter land in the Ypsonas area and split their time between the two places,

tending their grapes and almonds in Lofou and cultivating fields of cereals in Ypsonas. Even today there are very close ties between the two villages with many of the younger family members living in Ypsonas because of its close proximity to Limassol – and work.If you take a wander at this time of year you will see the housewives hard at work preparing different food from thickened grape juice. The best known of these is soujouko which is made from strings of almonds or walnuts that have been dipped in thickened grape juice and allowed to dry before the process is repeated. The speciality of Lofou is palouze, and on Saturday 18th/Sunday 19th September the village will hold its annual Palouze Festival where bowls of warm fresh Palouze sprinkled with chopped almonds will be served to everyone. Both villages are within comfortable driving distance from Larnaca and their festivals give extra reason to spend time exploring a little further afield. ►The Palouze Festival in Lofou will take place in the village school where stalls will sell local handicrafts, produce and of course bowls of warm Palouze! The festival gets into ‘full swing’ during the afternoon and continues with music long into the evening.

George Panayiotou always wanted to make a difference – when he left school in the late 1990s he considered how to make his fortune using his strengths in Mathematics and Computers. However, while he dreamed, bills had to be paid, so he painted houses. Growing up in Kiti was a time of long hot summers and happy days, but the pull of doing something really worthwhile for people was overwhelming.

In 2000 George left Cyprus for the USA where he studied hard and obtained his Degree in Communication Disorders. George returned to Cyprus in 2003 - his roots and the long hot summer were too appealing. But after painting even more houses and preparing to travel back to the States to begin his Doctorate in Audiology, the phone rang. The generous scholarship he had won with his dedicated hard work was being withdrawn due to budget cuts!

George is not someone who gives up easily, and a year later he finally secured another scholarship and returned to the States. After four years he achieved his dream and became a Doctor of Audiology. He then spent one year training with a pioneering surgeon who was so impressed by this young Cypriot man that he offered him the opportunity to head up his Department of Audiology. Was this how he could make his fortune? What about Cyprus? After a lot of thought he declined the generous offer and returned to his homeland. Pursuing his passion to make a difference and improve the quality of life of everyone suffering from hearing impairment here in Cyprus, he established the LARNACA AUDIOLOGY CENTRE. Dr George is committed to providing professional and competent advice, providing the best quality hearing aids, and providing a high level of customer service to ensure everyone has a good experience when they make the important decision to improve their hearing. With all the current advancements in computer-related technology it is an exciting time for consumers, providing much more choice to meet everyone’s budget and personal requirements. You are also welcome to use your chosen hearing aid for a trial period to ensure you are totally satisfied.

Dr George is happy to be home again, knows he made the right decision, and is excited

and optimistic about building and expanding his Audiology business to meet the growing demand in Cyprus - his Cyprus.

LARNACANEWSFEATUREYou, The Law And Your FinanceYour Questions Answered By Our Resident English Cypriot Lawyer, Stelios StylianouDear SteliosThis may seem a strange question to ask you as I am sure you could give a very biased opinion, but I am in need of a good solicitor. My question is how do I choose a solicitor to work with from the vast array of solicitors available in Cyprus? There seems to be one on every street corner. In the UK, you would approach a Law firm specialising in your particular need. I am looking for a solicitor to represent my business so ordinarily I would be looking for a solicitor or solicitor's firm that specialises and deals with corporate and business law. Where do I start? What should I be looking for? And are things the same in Cyprus as in England, or totally different?- Maria Antoniou

Dear MariaHow do you choose a solicitor? How would you choose one in England? More often than not you would get the opinion of a friend, colleague, or family member and if they don't know one you would turn to the directories in England like Chambers and Partners where expertise, language ability, experience, team size and records of achievements may be noted. Here, it’s hit and miss for a non-Cypriot and, for that matter,

a Cypriot too. Being a lawyer here doesn't necessarily mean competence in any sphere of the law. In fact lawyers are prevented by a code of conduct from touting or claiming expertise in any field. You will find that most law firms in the tourist villages or towns are small general practices, which can handle specific types of work up to a certain level of complexity. If you want to be represented by a law firm specialising in company law, contract law, business law, etc. then you will have to seek out lawyers in either Limassol or Nicosia where the practices deal on a daily basis with complex legal, and novel points. Go and see them, get a feel for their practice and professionalism and then decide. Many of the lawyers in the top firms in Limassol or Nicosia, and a few from Larnaca, are in fact competent enough to work for top City of London law firms. They have the background, the books and the knowledge to assist in this sphere of the law. Contract law is based largely on English law but Cyprus contract law has developed its own case law, which in some areas may differ slightly. Cyprus company law and the Company Registry in Nicosia were established during the days of British rule. Our Company Act has been translated into

Greek and most of the provisions are actual translations of English company law from between 1957 and 1960. If you wish to retain a lawyer in Cyprus, you can do your research on the internet by "googling" recommended lawyers or seeking out expatriate forums where comments are left on all matters of life in Cyprus including comments on lawyers! The internet has opened the way for people to comment on their experiences and from there you may discover a law firm or lawyer who is suitable for your needs. At the same time it may help you to discover who to avoid…I hope my response to your letter was unbiased. I wish you good luck. Kind Regards Stelios A. LARNACANEWSFOOD&DRINKDelicious Ways With Figs by Chrissie Flint

At this time of the year, one of the most abundant fruits is figs and many housewives prepare jam from them. There are several different variet-ies to choose from -both green and black figs and the latter tend to be slightly stronger tasting and juicier. Whilst figs taste good served chilled straight from the fridge, it is fun to experiment in the kitchen too!

Figs With FilfarWhat better than an easy recipe that combines figs with the popular local liqueur.

Ingredients2-3 Figs per servingHandful of AlmondsTwo Wine Glasses of Filfar Orange LiqueurVanilla Ice Cream to Serve or Greek Style Yogurt

1. Wash the figs and cut off their stalks. 2. In the base of each fig push in a whole skinned almond. 3. Place all the figs into an ovenproof dish and pour over two wine glasses of Filfar orange.4. Sprinkle with two teaspoons of brown sugar and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180C/Gas 4. 5. Serve the figs with their syrup and a spoonful of vanilla ice cream or Greek style yoghurt.

Figgy Ice CreamIngredients4 eggs100g caster sugar300ml whipping cream12 black figs (skin on!)2 glasses of Muscat100g Demerara sugar

1. Wash the figs and pat dry with kitchen paper. Poach gently in the Muscat with the brown sugar for ten minutes until soft. Cool.2. Separate the eggs. Beat the egg yolks until light and fluffy. In a second bowl using a clean, dry whisk, whisk the egg whites until stiff and then whisk in the caster sugar a teaspoon at a time until the meringue is stiff and shiny.3. In a third bowl, whisk the cream until stiff. Using a metal spoon, gently add the egg yolks, the meringue mixture and the cooled figs and gently blend together. Pour the mixture into a plastic container and freeze overnight. Remove the ice cream from the freezer 15 minutes before serving.

LARNACANEWSFOOD&DRINKPork Tenderloin With Olive-Mustard Tapenade

SERVES: 4PREPARATION TIME: 15minsCOOKING TIME: 10-15 mins

INGREDIENTS

½ kilo of Pork Tenderloin, trimmed and sliced crosswise into 8 piecesCooking Spray½ tsp of Salt½ tsp of bottled minced Garlic¼ tsp of black Pepper¼ tsp of ground Fennel1 tbsp of freshly chopped Parsley¼ cup of pitted Kalamata Olives¼ cup of pitted green Olives2 tsp of Balsamic Vinegar1 tsp of Dijon Mustard

This olive Tapenade adds a lovely flavour to the pork tenderloin, un-surprisingly very popular amongst Mediterranean people.

How

1. Flatten the pork slices into ½ inch thick medallions to ensure even cooking. Heat a large non-stick skillet over a medium-high heat.

2. Heat a large non-stick skillet over a medium-high heat.

3. Combine the salt, pepper and ground fennel together in a small cup. Then rub the mixture onto the pork medallions.

4. Lightly coat the medallions with cooking spray and then add the pork to the now hot skillet, cook-ing for around 4 minutes on each side.

5. Whilst waiting for the pork to finish cooking, prepare the olive Tapenade. Add to a bowl the

Kalamata olives along with the green olives, as well as the mustard, balsamic vinegar and fresh parsley. Add the minced garlic and mix together to create your lovely Tapenade.

6. Once the pork is ready, place the medallions piping hot onto a dinner plate. Finally spoon over your Tapenade and it’s ready to serve.

This pork tenderloin goes perfectly with some Couscous and a tossed Greek salad topped with a gener-ous slice of Feta cheese; a gor-geous Mediterranean meal. And if you have any of your Tapenade left then you can use it in sandwiches, or to accompany your next meal. I usually make extra just so that I can have some the next day for

lunch. Spoon a share of spinach over each serving of stew.

Just a three hour flight from Larnaca on Austrian Airlines takes you to the beautiful city of Vienna; the land of Mozart, exquisite cakes and the Viennese Waltz. After the blistering heat of Cyprus, the cooler climate and beautiful scenery make Austria a perfect place to escape to in the hot sum-mer months. There are some good deals to be had in Vienna, especially with internet bookings. Our stay at The Imperial Riding School Vienna, a hotel in Rennweg, came with a very good breakfast included in the price of the room as a special offer. It was an imposing, busy ho-tel, three stops on the tram from the city centre.Vienna itself is a magical place, full of beautiful architecture and famous coffee houses. The main attractions are the cathedral, which is called Stephansdom, the Hofburg Palace and the kunsthis-torisches Museum. The cathedral was dark, gothic and atmospheric, but due to the renovations taking place on the outside it was dif-ficult to see it in its original state.

The Hofburg Palace,

summer home to Emperor Franz Joseph and Em-press Elizabeth or “Sisi”, as she was known, was breathtaking in its luxury and opulence. It takes a full morning to view the Imperial Apartments and see the amazing wealth and treasures contained within them. The most notable art gallery is the kunsthistorisches Museum, which con-tains an impressive selection of famous paintings. There are works from Raf-fael and Francesco Guardi, Bruegel, Caravag-gio and Peter Paul Rubens. My favourite painting is The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Probably the most well known painting is the “Madonna of the Cherries”, by Titian. The museum building is a unique design. It is adorned with gold and marble and contains a wonderful café, which serves some of the most delicious Viennese cakes

ine! After an inspiring weekend in Vienna we moved on to Salzburg by train. The travelling time varies depending upon which route you take, but the fastest arrives in just under three hours. Salzburg is a very different city from Vienna. It has a more cosmopolitan feel and is extremely busy. The main attrac-tions for visitors are the impos-ing Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mozart’s house (before he left for Vienna), and of course, shopping in the scenic cobbled streets.A short trip from Salzburg (forty minutes by bus) and you are sur-rounded by glorious lakes and mountains. We stayed in a lovely hotel in St. Gilgen, a village on the edge of Lake Wolfgangsee. From there it is possible to take a boat trip around the lake and visit St. Wolfgang, where you can catch a stream funicular to the top of the mountain and observe the stun-ning views. Many people choose Austria as a hiking destination, but there are many less demanding walks, along pathways through the wild flowers, scattered across the hills.Austria is especially beautiful in the summer and is very accessible for travellers from Cyprus. It is a peaceful, restful holiday; definitely give it a try.

LARNACANEWSWELLBEINGAre Insulin Resistance And Diabetes Really Reversible? by Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak-Vakos, MD

symptoms can precede diabetes by decades before anyone ever actually gets diabetes. Most people know about the common complications of diabetes such as heart attacks, strokes, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. However, most people don`t realise that insulin resistance or pre-diabetes can be just as bad.We are told that nutrient-dense, low sugar, high fibre diets rich in omega-3 fats are good for us, to avoid insulin resistance and other chronic diseases. This is the classic “One Diet Fits All” mistake. We are genetically unique and have unique nutrient needs for our metabolic type. Each of us needs different percentages of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) to produce efficient energy for trillions of our body cells to perform optimally in their designated functions. When we eat out of sync with our genes, we turn on “wrong genes” that promote diabetes. There are many examples when native people (Indians from America, Africans, Inuits from Alaska, etc.) change their traditional diet and embrace western diets, and start developing diabetes2, high blood pressure, arthritis and other chronic diseases not known to them in previous generations. Today with just one generation (100 years) eating a western diet, more than 70% are obese, have diabetes 2, heart disease and other chronic complications; simply because they eat the food wrong for their genetic makeup.Diabetes 2 and Pre-diabetes are Reversible - New sciences (Metabolic Typing, Functional

Diagnostic Medicine & Nutrition)

show that this is possible through discovering your unique genetic metabolic type, an aggressive lifestyle approach, nutritional support and occasional medications. It is important to diagnose Type 2 Diabetes and insulin resistance early. In fact, all doctors should aggressively diagnose pre-diabetes, before diabetes occurs, and before any damage is done to your body. Damage begins with even the slightest change in insulin or blood sugar levels. In a recent study, anyone with a fasting blood sugar level of over 87 was at an increased risk of diabetes. Most doctors are not concerned until the blood sugar is over 110 or worse, over 126, which is diabetes.Early testing should be carried out on anyone who has a family history of type 2 diabetes, central abdominal weight gain or abnormal cholesterol.

By Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak-Vakos MD, MT Advisor, Functional Diagnostic Medicine & Nutrition PractitionerAccording to main stream medical profession, Diabetes is irreversible and when you have it, you can only control it with drugs or insulin, to avoid organ damage and death. But what pharmaceutical companies and doctors don’t tell you is that those medications and insulin can actually increase your risk of heart attacks or even dying. Diabetes 2 and obesity epidemics have become widespread in our modern world, despite new diets recommended by dieticians and new medications recommended by doctors.Type 2 Diabetes, known as adult onset diabetes, now affects nearly 100 million people worldwide. But, today we are seeing an increasing rate of type 2 diabetes, especially in children. The rate has increased over 1000 percent in the last decade, and was unknown before this generation. One in three children born today will have diabetes in their lifetime. And yet, Diabetes 2 is an entirely preventable lifestyle disease. In a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, Walter Willet, MD, PhD, and his colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health, said that 91% of all Type 2 Diabetes cases could be prevented through improvements in lifestyle and diet. You might have undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetic status for some considerable time before it is diagnosed. Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are primary culprits in causing diabetes. When your diet is full of empty calories (junk foods, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.) the body slowly becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and needs more and more insulin to keep up your blood sugar level. Insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome is often accompanied with central obesity, fatigue after meals, sugar cravings, high triglycerides, problems with blood clotting, as well as increased inflammation. Dear Tess by Tracey Stratton

Dear Tess,

I have been in a relationship for the last 5 years. For roughly the last 18 months I have been ready to 'move things on', that is - I want more of a commitment. I am 35 years old, I want to be married and I would love to have children. I have discussed this with my partner who says he will get married when he is ready. However every time I bring up when he thinks he might be ready, it always ends in an argument. He did in fact buy me an engagement ring, but then changed his mind about proposing to me, and it is still sitting in its box! We have had a lovely relationship but his inability to commit is driving us apart. On top of all this, he says he is not sure that he wants to ever have children. I just don't know what to do. I have invested 5 years of my life into this relationship - waiting and hoping for the family I have always craved, but the dream seems to be getting further away. On top of all that my chances of having children will become more unlikely as I get older. Thanks,Anonymous

I can see from your letter how torn you must be. What comes across most in your letter is your

focus upon getting married and having children. You say very little about your feelings for the man you want as father to your children except to say you've 'had' a lovely relationship. It sounds as if this issue is clouding everything else. It could be that the focus upon getting married and having children is making your partner feel that is all you want him for…consequently making him feel of very little value as the person you love. Life can be extremely difficult for women - women can be forced into considering choices and making decisions of which men just don't have to contemplate. Your partner has all the time in the world to make those choices. First and foremost you need to get your relationship on track. Is this man going to be truly happy if he feels forced into marriage and children, which he doesn't feel ready for? If the issues of marriage and children are overwhelming every other aspect of your relationship, I would guess you have lost sight of just enjoying each other and having fun. It does sound as if the commitment of marriage and children are crucial to you and you shouldn't lose sight of your dream, particularly of having children. You are right in that at some point that choice may not be open to you anymore.

However maybe there is

a balance to be struck here. Have a frank and honest discussion with your partner (not demanding your terms). Tell your partner of your worries about not being able to have children should you leave it much longer. You might have to make some painful decisions between you. The crux of the issue here is an 'honest discussion'. He will need to be honest about whether he is likely to want to have children. If not, you need to truly consider whether facing a life without children, but with the man you have loved for the last 5 years, is something you can happily settle with.Regards,

Tess

LARNACANEWSMOTORSBlast From The PastGone In.... About 6 Seconds by Sean Dunne

TURN TO PAGE 29

This month I was trying to decide on the most famous car of all time in movie history and believe it or not, the car that seems to top most of the online polls is Nicolas Cages’ favourite car from the 2000 movie Gone In 60 Seconds. His car was Eleanor…a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback.

It does seem fitting that the most famous movie car from the American movie industry is also the American flagship car; the Ford Mustang.

Everyone who knows their cars will associate America with producing powerful muscle cars with huge V6, V8 and even V12 engines. It was Henry Ford who produced the car that would become the pinnacle of American muscle and gave rise to competitors producing the likes of GM’s Chevrolet Camaro, AMC’s Javelin and

Chrysler’s Plymouth Barracuda, while also inspiring coupés such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri.

The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang built by Ford first from 1965 through 1970 and then relaunched from 2006 until the present day. The 1965,

On a recent trip to the Kunthisto-risches Museum in Vienna I was surprised to see a marble statue I recognised from Cyprus. On closer inspection the statue was of the ancient Greek goddess Artemis, which had been originally found near the fort in Larnaca. The beautiful Artemis, according to ancient Greek history was the maiden goddess of the hunt. She is usually depicted with a bow and arrow or hunting spear, which may have been present on the statue before it was damaged. Homer described her as “Artemis of the wildland. Mistress of animals.” The deer and cypress were sacred to her and she is often depicted with a hunting dog or stag at her side.Artemis was the daughter of the Zeus and Leta and was the twin sister of Apollo. She was the first born, who helped to deliver her brother, as she was chosen by the

Sister of Fates to be a midwife. As was often the case, with the ancient goddesses, Artemis had a dark side; her golden arrows were known to bring death and illness upon young girls and women. She also played a significant part in the Trojan War. She was wor-shipped along with her mother and brother in Troy, where her brother Apollo was the patron god of the city. She is said to have calmed the sea as the Greeks sailed to battle; while an oracle was delivered saying that King Agamemnon should sacrifice his own daughter to please her. Just as he was about to sacrifice Iphigenia, Artemis snatched the girl and left a deer in her place!Artemis is also credited with the death of Adonis, the human lover of Aphrodite, who was killed after his boast of being a better hunter than she was. However, in some

accounts she killed him in revenge, during a feud with Aphrodite, who she blamed for her companion, warrior Queen Hyp-polytus’, death. It was nice to see a reminder of Larnaca in Vienna, although there is a beautiful statue of the goddess on Artemis Avenue in Larnaca, which was generously given to the the town.

1966 and 1967 Shelbys were a series of Ford Mustangs that were specially modified by Carroll Shelby's company and sold under the name Shelby GT.

The 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback has a 4.7 Litre, V8, 428 cubic-inch, 360-hp

engine. It came with a 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual transmission and was also available as a 2-door convertible. It does 0-60 in 6 seconds flat and has a ¼ mile time of 14.3 seconds.

Now Eleanor, as the Shelby Mustang was known in the movie, was in fact a replica; one of 15 made especially for the movie by a company called Cinema Vehicles in Hollywood, California. A few years after the movie was released, and when Eleanor had become a famous movie star, Halicki Films Company & Caroll Shelby licensed Classic Recreations to build another 400 Eleanor's for the worldwide market.

The 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback has been described by its creators as a ‘love it or hate it’ car. And love it or hate it, it’s a car that sticks in the mind for its incredible beauty and raw power, while possessing a special aura that only unique cars can. And if you love this car enough, there are plenty to go around and anyone can order themselves a custom made ‘Eleanor’ for as little as $149,000!

Welcome to Cyprus football! For those of you that are not familiar with them, here are all the 14 teams in the first division of the Cypriot football league. Three teams per season from this league take part in the Champions league and the Europa League Cup. We will keep you updated with all the results and league positions of the first division teams every month and let you know how well we are doing in Europe.Cyprus football has enjoyed a major resurgence in quality and professionalism and has a FIFA National team ranking, believe it or not, of 63rd out of 207 countries. To give you a comparision, England ranks 7th, Scotland 41st, Republic of Ireland 36th, Northern Ireland 59th and Wales 84th. Most of the top teams employ foreign recognised coaches and players and all first division teams play in up to date FIFA regulated and approved stadiums with all the safety features you would get at any UK stadium. The Larnaca News will be profiling all the Larnaca teams taking part in the Cypriot leagues first, second and third divisions. We will be introducing you to all the Larnaca teams one by one each month. As you can see this month I thought it would be a good idea to start our profiles with AEK. Our introduction to you will hopefully give you a better understanding of Cyprus football and hopefully encourage you to select a team for you to support here in Larnaca, Cyprus. Ticket prices are so cheap in relation to UK prices and we hope an enjoyable day's footie will be had by all who attend.

LARNACANEWSFEATURE

AEK Larnaca is one of the most well known clubs in Cyprus football and fans of the Larnaca club are eager to see how they can perform this season.AEK Larnaca was founded on 18th July 1994 after the joining of the two historical clubs of Larnaca, Pezoporikos and EPA, allowing the Larnaca people to proudly state that they had a sports club that would lead the way in all sports competitions. The green and yellow colours of the club and the emblem represent the Athenian General Kimon who died on the shores of Larnaca trying to free Cyprus from the Persians by laying siege to the Persian stronghold of Citium (Kition/Larnaca) around 450BC. Currently the club is gaining a lot of Dutch influence and has captured the knowledge of Jordi Cruyff as team manager and team coach Ton Caanen. Already his influence has brought in the likes of solid and well known centre back, Kevin Hofland so it will certainly be an interesting season. Support for the club is amongst the most loyal in Cyprus and the club tries to cater for all its supporters’ needs with a variety of season ticket packages. This allows as many supporters as possible to follow AEK Larnaca as it strives to establish itself as a modern, successful club.

Season ticket packages include Gold, Silver, Pink, Green and Yellow. If you want all

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is the sequel to Kane & Lynch: Dead Men and improves on its predecessor in graphics, sound and gameplay. Fortunately that wasn’t really too difficult an achievement. The strange visual concept of the game is definitely unusual to say the least. It’s almost as if there is a cameraman following Kane & Lynch’s every move around Shanghai with what seems to be an old reporter’s camcorder. You’ll see lines flashing across the screen, lens flare, and in times of extreme violence or nudity the cut scene becomes blurrily censored. It is admittedly a bit hard to take in at first but once you get used to it, it becomes a unique part of the game.Certainly the best part of the game is the satisfyingly crazy gun fights where you are usually completely outnumbered. Enemy AI is good and camping behind cover and firing until you run out of ammo is not a good idea when the computer controlled characters will flank you and take you out. Being shot seems an integral part of every scene; you just can’t get

through without being hit. If you do get hit, crawl back to cover and wait for your now blood red tinted screen to go back to normal. The story itself is rather short, a day or so of playing the main story will see you complete it on the default difficulty. Multiplayer offers some more options, but online mode is prone to lag and the levels last five minutes at the most. Offline co-op is cool to play if you have a friend at home who likes shooting down Shanghai with you and you’ll certainly have some fun when you throw a gas canister and your friend shoots it to blow up a mass of enemies. Dog Days is a solid game for some hardcore

shooting action with clever enemy AI. Other than that the story mode and multiplayer options are too short and uninvolved for this game to hit those top marks.

outside its walls. Once London finally got through the plague, September was just around the corner. Thinking, hoping and praying that 1666 would be a better year looking back at the sad events of 1665, the people of England could not have been more wrong. On September 1st/2nd 1666 the Great Fire of London billowed out its flaming wings and soared through the streets, collapsing over 300 hundred buildings in the first day. By the 4th September half of London was in flames, yet not many people were hurt. In actual fact, only nine people were killed by the Great Fire compared to the thousands killed by the plague, and the fire burned and killed the rats and fleas that carried the plague bacillus. So although it was

seen as the second tragedy in two years, it did serve a positive purpose as well. By the end, only 1/5th of London was left standing. St. Paul’s Cathedral had melted and collapsed, but the Tower of London remained unscathed.History also claims that on the 13th September 1902, a man named Harry Jackson became

the first man ever to be convicted on the basis of fingerprint evidence, something that today is used routinely in many criminal investigations.Jack the Ripper also became infamously known throughout England in September after the beginning of his terror on the 31st August 1888. His second victim, Annie Chapman, was found on the 8th September. On the 28th September this villain was given a name after a letter was received by the Central News Agency threatening more murders, signed Jack the Ripper. On the 30th September two more victims were found minutes apart from each other and yet Jack the Ripper still eluded the police’s grasp. Jack the Ripper’s total victims tallied up to five women, although many now believe it was actually eleven. Certainly not a joyous month in history for England...

September brings with it the promise of autumn for cooler, calmer weather than the oppressive summer heat. Parents rejoice with their families that they’ve had a lovely summer holiday, but most follow that with, “roll on first day of school”. That’s right, the children are back in the hands of those brave teachers that decided at some point in their lives that they wanted to look after and teach other people’s children for at least seven hours of the day. Well this month we have our own little history lesson for you.In 1665 the Great Plague hit London. The Bubonic Plague, also known as the Black Death killed off roughly 15% of the population of London and hit other parishes further afield, such as York, where the bodies were buried just

One of the first things that visitors to the village of Mosfiloti discover is that like so many place names in Cyprus, there are two ways to spell the village name. Traditionally, the village name was spelt with a ‘ph’, which has recently been replaced by an ‘f’, but importantly, the meaning of the village name remains unchanged. It comes from the Greek name for the white hawthorn bush - the mosphila - which has long been used by local fruit growers for grafting pears and apples.Mosfiloti lies in the eastern part of the Larnaca district, close to the Nicosia - Limassol highway. In recent years, the village has developed considerably as there have been a number of villas built by Nicosians seeking a weekend hideaway, within easy reach of the capital. There are a variety of traditional architectural styles to be seen in the village. Over the last century the number of residents has remained steady at about 100. Much of the land is rocky making cultivation of fruit and vegetables difficult, but the area is well known for its olives. The small abandoned monastery of Ayias Thekla stands on the outskirts of the village. Local legend tells that the monastery was built during the 4th century by Ayia Eleni at the same time she founded the monastery of Stavrovouni high on rocky crags overlooking Larnaca Bay. The monastery of Ayia Thekla was rebuilt in 1471 and restored during the 18th century and in itself is not spectacular, but underneath the apse in its church is a cave with a holy well, known as agiasma, which is credited with curing those with skin problems such as acne and eczema. In recent years, several nuns have started to live there once again. For those living in Mosfiloti, the village of Psevdas with its good restaurants is conveniently close by for an evening out when lethargy to cook sets in. If you would like to explore a little more of the area, the surrounding villages of Kalo Horio, Ayia Anna and Pyrga have interesting architecture and in Pyrga the Royal chapel of Ayia Ekaterina, which was built by the Lusignans, is one of the most interesting buildings from that period.

the auction of the law abiding couple’s home. Unsurprisingly the Hudsons feel betrayed by Cyprus, the country they had “fallen in love with”, and are currently not sure whether they want to stay in this “corrupt place” any longer. Thank you for highlighting this story Lesley, maybe you would like to aim a question at Stelios Stylianou, our Question the Solicitor writer, about Title Deeds and how someone can mortgage land yet sell the property on top of it…Regards,- The Editor

Dear Editor,Reading your AUG / SEPT 2010 Issue I could not but feel obliged to refer to Sonia Kilvington’s article – Larnaca’s Landmarks , Athena. She gives an excellent ″who is who″ for goddess Athena, but failed to correctly identify the statue at the GSZ stadium roundabout. The statue is not Athena but Artemis Goddess of Agriculture (and Hunting), hence Artemis Avenue. For the sake of Larnaca’s History could this please be corrected?Best Regards,- P.G.Parson

Dear Mr Parson,Sonia actually emailed me herself after surprisingly identifying the mistake after seeing a statue in Vienna a week or so after

HAVE YOUR SAY......

Have Your Say by The EditorDear Editor,Please can you research this story which is disgraceful? A couple, Ken and Mary Hudson, paid for their flat, they also paid for their Title Deeds I believe, and now the previous owner who didn't pay the mortgage on the land or give them their Title Deeds has not paid the mortgage on the land (WHY is the land their flat stands on mortgaged when they've bought it?).Now the bank is foreclosing, auctioning the flat and evicting them. This is the tip of the iceberg and I never realised Cyprus was SO corrupt. It needs highlighting doesn't it, or will you then be closed down and evicted?Best wishes,- Lesley Eve

Hi Lesley,Glad to hear from you again, though not so glad to hear about your topic. You are of course absolutely correct; title Deeds are a big problem in Cyprus and have been an ongoing problem for more years than I can remember. Ken and Mary Hudson are both 72 year old pensioners who came to Cyprus to work for a charity in 2002. The Hudsons bought a flat through an estate agent, registered it in their name and received paperwork from a notary that confirmed their ownership of the property. Shortly after they purchased the property, they found out however that the bank had retained the title deeds because the owner had not completed mortgage payments on the property. Unfortunately, as most people in Cyprus will now be aware, without the Title Deeds, they had no claim on the property. Despite feeling sorry for the couple, the courts decided the bank could go ahead with

The moon's interior may harbour 100 times more water than previously estimated, according to a new study that took a fresh look at samples of moon rocks collected by Apollo astronauts nearly 40 years ago. The researchers determined that the lunar water likely originated early in the moon's formation history, sug-gesting that it is, in fact, native to the moon. Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Geophysical Laboratory, and other colleagues, said it's likely that the water was preserved from the hot magma that was present when the moon began to form 4.5 billion years ago. They also think that the water, which is locked up in lunar rocks and material, is likely more widespread in the moon's interior than previous stud-ies estimated. These findings now suggest that the lower limit for total water on the moon could be 100 times greater.Tracking moon water: In 2008, research of volcanic glass beads brought attention to the fact that there might be more water in the moon's interior than scien-tists had previously thought. At the time, the scientist of Carnegie, Francis McCubbin and his colleagues, were searching for water in lunar minerals, but at that point they had only models and calculations that sug-gested higher water content. Since then, observations from unmanned probes from NASA and other space agencies have confirmed the presence of water in lunar material and water ice on

the moon's surface. For this new study, the researchers were able to compare their calculations to analyses of samples of Apollo moon rocks and a lunar meteor-ite from Africa. Moon water from magma: In the new study, researchers located grains of the mineral apatite in thin sections from the moon rocks and meteorite. They used a technique called secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), which allowed them to analyse the grains for a compound known as hydroxyl, which can be incorpo-rated into apatite's chemical structure if the mineral crystallises from magma that contains water. The SIMS technique bombards the lunar samples with a primary ion beam that al-lows the researchers to separate the ions with a magnet, depending on the charge. From these measurements, the scien-tists inferred the amount of water in the apatite's source magma, which allowed them to extrapolate the result to estimate the total amount of water that is present on the moon. The prevailing hypothesis is that the moon was formed from a giant im-pact event, when a Mars-sized object slammed into Earth. The ejected material from this collision then coalesced into what is presently the moon. The results of the new study found that the moon's water was likely present in the

hot magma from the impact as it started to cool and crystallise. Scientist Francis McCubbin explained: "If we were to take all the water that is locked up inside the moon, and put it in a homogenous layer on the lunar surface, it would cover the moon to about a meter depth."In comparison, if all the water that is locked up in Mars was put on the lunar surface, it would cover the moon to a depth of about 1.5 km. And, if the same is done for all of the water inside the Earth, it would cover the entire lunar surface to a depth of 250 km. Still, the findings have significant implications that could alter current theories about lunar magma, and how the moon formed and evolved.

JOKEAfter Maria brought home her fiancé to meet her parents, her father invited the young man into his study to find out more about him. "What are your plans?" he asked Joseph. "I'm a scholar of the Torah," John replied. "Well, that's admirable," Maria’s father replied. "But what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter?" "I will study, and God will surely provide for us," Joseph explained. "And how will you buy her a nice engagement ring?" "I will study hard, and God will provide for us." "And children?" asked the father. "How will you support children?" "Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replied the fiancé. The conversation continued in much the same fashion. After Joseph and Leslie had left, her mother asked her father what he found out. The father answered, "Well, he has no job and no plans, but the good news is that he thinks I'm God."
