PRESENTATION ABSTRACT The industry is changing for SMT we are seeing finer pitch com-ponents being used with higher den-sity designs to fit more functionality into smaller packages. Brandon Prior from Prismark, a company that specializes in market-ing trends for electronics, will take us through some of the expected chal-lenges in manufacturing with these market changes. One of the specific areas that Prismark will review with us is the developing trends of the dif-ferent types of components that are being used in the industry and how this will likely change over the next 3-5 years. For many board assembly houses this market trend may give them the justification to update their equipment set or even give them heads up on what types of materials they should be evaluating now so they can be ready for the next genera-tion circuit board designs.
SPEAKER PROFILE Prismark is an electronics industry consulting firm that is privileged to work with more than 150 of the world’s foremost electronics companies, including many of the leading systems and semiconductor com-panies, manufacturing services providers, their suppli-ers of materials, components, and manufacturing tools, and the leading financial institutions that enable indus-try growth and investment. David graduated with an Engineering Degree from the University of Wash-
ington in 1988. He joined I-Source in 2008. David has known Mik, the co-
founder of I-Source, since he was 18 and began working for Mik and Irene at
Synetix in Redmond, WA while still attending college. Synetix eventually be-
came Redmond Circuits and David continued working nights in charge of me-
chanical operations until graduating. After graduating David worked in Electronic
Control Designs and was in charge of all mechanical manufacturing program-
ming. In 1991 he started working for Tripoint and was in charge of the CAM/CAD
and mechanical departments. In 1996 David worked as the Operations Manager
and in 1999 he started Northwest Circuits Services Consulting. In 2005 David
moved over to Sprig Circuits and in 2008 he went on to become the General
Manager for I-Source Technical Services, Inc. While at I-Source David has taken
over the daily operations for both the US and Mexico facilities.
David plans on expanding I-Source beyond its current market segments by
manufacturing features at tolerances that most traditional manufacturing facilities
will not attempt. Combining this with materials & thicknesses that traditional
shops have difficulty working with he feels I-Source will be very successful at be-
coming their new niche.
David has been involved with the SMTA off and on his entire career and
became a member 4 years ago. He has found the technical forums and net-
working with the SMTA to be the most beneficial for him. David loves spending
time with family and friends and cooks a mean BBQ. He also finds baking very
enjoyable and a great stress relief. Not to mention the added benefit of home
baked goods.

Please share this information with your colleagues!
The SMTA & MentorNet One-on-One E-Mentoring Program is a chance to make a big difference in the life of a student in as little as 15 minutes a week.
SMTA seeks members to be mentors who are: Science and engineering professionals
In our related industries Active, on leave, or retired
To match with protégés who are: Pursuing a professional future in the fields of engineering and science
At the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, or early career faculty (untenured) levels
Although mentors volunteer their time to benefit the protégé, they can also find a rewarding experience for themselves. “I hope [my student] is getting as much out of it as I am,” is how one MentorNet mentor de-
scribes the experience. More than 70% of mentors have recommended MentorNet's e-mentoring program to a friend or colleague!
Mentoring relationships last 8 months. Because mentors and students communicate entirely by email, they can choose a schedule that is convenient for both. In fact, 90% of our mentors feel that

Specifying PCB Array Panelization By, Kathy Palumbo, PA&LS, LLC
PCB designers are always faced with the dilemma of whether they should panelize their designs or not and if so how big should we make the panel. Panels should be designed to optimize PCB raw material usage and SMT machine capabilities. To achieve this PCB Designer, CCA Manufacturing, and PCB Fabri-cation Engineers should all work together to develop a standardized approach. Standardizing on overall board size minimizes required set-up time, tooling, and reduces the number of oven profiles that may be required. Some basic standardizations that can be used for a 20” X 20” stencil and most of the conveyo-rized equipment used in an SMT process are as follows:
1. Minimum array length = 3“ (76.2mm) (length of array in X direction)
2. Minimum array width = 2.5“ (63.5mm) (width of array in Y direction)
3. For PCB Thickness = .042“ (1.0668mm) or >, max length (X) = 14“ (355.6mm) & max width (Y) = 12“ (304.8mm)
4. PCB Thickness = .04199“ (1.066546mm) to .014” (.3556mm), max length (X) = 14“ (355.6mm) & max width (Y) = 6“ (152.4mm)
5. PCB thickness < .014” (.3556mm) typically requires a carrier for the entire SMT process
6. Array Width (Y) should never exceed Length (X) (Unstable for automated process or over weight)
7. Standard Global Fiducials should be .05“ (1.27mm) round, plated, and placed on all 4 corners of the array rail with 2X Solder Mask clearance.
8. The Primary side global fiducials should always mirror the secondary side global fiducials
9. When scoring is used the depth of the score between the top and bottom should be within 0.005” (.127mm) +/- 0.001” (.0254mm) of each other.
10. When Rat Bites are used soldermask should be cleared from the rat bite area.
Solder Mask not Properly Relieved from “Rat Bite” areas always results in…
Maintaining a Board Edge Clearance of .020” (.508mm) will also eliminate the issue of tearing mask and traces during depanelization.
Below is a basic panelization example
Optimizing your panel design is as critical as the design itself and can make or break the manufacturing process. Remember a designer does it once. A manufacturer does it 10’s of 1000’s of times. Work with your manufacturer on your panel designs and make their job easier. You’ll be happy you did. 13
