Woolworths Earn and Learn
Earlier this year, Lane Cove West Public School asked our community to help us collect Woolworths Earn
and Learn stickers on behalf of Broken Hill Public School. The initiative allows educational institutions from
across the country trade stickers in exchange for much needed school resources. LCWPS collected
approximately 56 000 stickers for Broken Hill, who were able to use these to receive the resources seen
below.
A huge thank you goes to LCW families and our local community for helping us support schools in remote
areas. Well done!

Book Contacting Volunteers
The school has recently purchased some lovely new readers for our
infant students to use in the classroom. We would love to hear
from parents who may be able to assist us with the task of covering
the books in clear contact. We have several boxes of books so any
help would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to help please
contact Mrs Jangoshian at [email protected]
who can arrange a pack of books and contact for you to take
home .

WriteOn Competition: LCWPS Entries
WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary students in Years 1 to 6. The
competition provides students with the opportunity to become published authors with winning entries from
the competition being published in a Best of WriteOn anthology. Below are some outstanding pieces of work
submitted by our students. They should be congratulated for crafting such interesting and creative
responses to the stimulus.
The Night Shuffle
In the night, every night in Townsville you could hear a shuffle in the bushes. Nobody knew what it was, no
one knew where it came from. All the town knew was that it came at 12.00am sharp. After the noise
started, a mysterious hat store opened as well as a sale in the clothes and mat store. The Townsville
people knew the exact person to solve the mystery: Suspicious Tom.
A few days later Suspicious Tom arrived. He went around the whole town searching the clothes store, the
mat store and all the other stores around the town until there was only one store left; the mysterious hat
store. When Suspicious Tom walked into the hat store an eerie ring welcomed him and lots of shuffling
started to happen. Tom became even more suspicious than ever. Then out of behind the counter came an
old man, “How can I help you?” he said cheerfully.
“I would like to know if you know anything about the shuffling?” said Tom.
“Oh you mean the hats,” said the man.
“Hats, what hats?” said Tom starting to get excited.
“Don’t you know there was a commercial about them the other day?” said the man.
“Yes!! Another case closed!”
Now everybody buys the hats and they are known as good companions. They do all the chores so the kids
don’t whinge, they play with the kids, they read great bedtime stories and each one has a thing they’re
best at; like some are sailors some are good at geography and lots more! Which one would you choose?

The Cheeky Risk
“No!” I shouted as I slammed the door behind me. “I am not joining your silly gang. I don’t want to get into
any trouble on Mum’s birthday. I would be mopping the floor and the toilet for the rest of my life! ...It is too
risky,” I say as well, but obviously she does not listen and is already out of sight. I try to look everywhere but
she is nowhere to be seen. I thought to myself for a minute I think….. I think…and I think. It finally made
sense I know where she might be! She was there! She was in her room writing in her “secret diary” about
what she was going to do on mum’s birthday that will make mum loose it!
The day finally came, Mum’s birthday. As soon as I woke up Amy was out of bed and writing in her diary. I
don’t think she even said happy birthday to mum. As soon as I got up I went into mum and dads room to see
if they were still asleep. “….ZzzZzzZ,” I heard as I slowly opened the door. They were fast asleep. At the time
it was 7:00am and they were normally already awake. I guess she knew it was her birthday but dad was not
there he was either at the gym. Finally she got up it was 10am. I was walking back to my room when I
heard……
SLAP, BANG, CRASH!!!!!!!
I was so scared. It was Mum’s birthday nothing else bad can happen it is already not going to be a good day.
The time came 5pm and Amy was thinking of excuses to go out without mum. I saw Amy having a brain
wave. “Mum?” Amy said with a suspicious voice.
“Yes?” mum said weirdly.
“Can I go out with Olivia?”
“Sure!” she said.
“Thanks” she said.
“Hey!” Olivia whispered angrily, “This was not part of the plan.” “Well you’re coming anyway.”
They got to the hat shop and they snuck in. The shop was empty with no one in there which was not a good
sign so they couldn’t blend in but this was for mum. Olivia was too scared to go in so she just hid outside
behind a tree. “Well, whatever,” Amy said, “I will do it by myself. And so she did. “Um excuse me where are
the top hats?”
“Over here,” the man said. Amy didn’t really follow the man, she was stealing the hat. As soon as Amy got
the hat she ran out in a flash and hid behind the building. “I have it!!!!” Amy said excitedly.
“Yay, we can go home!” said Olivia with a smile, “Let’s go.”
When they got home they surprised mum with the hat and the first thing mum said was……”Did you pay for
this?”

Lane Cove West is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and
develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School

Scented Stackable Highlighters
Snowy Origami Set
Icicle Slapband Ruler
Yeti Fluffy Notepad
Arctic Owl Fluffy Keyring

number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account.
You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence
and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away.
They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit
wallet.
School Banking day is Thursday. Each week you need to bring your deposit wallet to canteen window.

Free home-based assessment and treatment for 7 to 12 year old children with fear and anxiety disorders.
GU Ref No: 2019/146
Does your child become very afraid of certain situations or objects, worry about a lot of things, get very distressed, or try to avoid things they fear?
About the studyOur team at Griffith University may be able to assist you. We are conducting a nationwide study that includes the following services at no cost to families:
• A thorough assessment of your child’s anxiety with a trained psychologist via the telephone;
• Your child receiving one of two kinds of home-based treatments delivered on a PC, laptop or tablet; and
• Two follow-up telephone assessments with a trained psychologist 6- and 12-months after treatment to track your child’s progress.
The study aims to find out if these two treatments are as effective as each other, and which children have the best response to each kind of treatment. This will mean that there are more evidence-based treatments available for helping anxious children.
About the treatmentsEach treatment involves your child completing treatment sessions at home on a PC, laptop or tablet.
Each treatment involves your child learning practical strategies to better manage anxiety.
• One treatment helps children learn to control the focus of their attention on helpful things around them.
• The other treatment helps children learn to think differently and approach things they fear.
Each treatment includes information, telephone or email support for parents in assisting their child to better manage anxiety.
Prior studies have shown that children who complete each treatment experience significant reductions in anxiety.
Contact usThis study is being funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is led by Professor Allison Waters and a team of experts in childhood anxiety disorders.
