Principal’s Report

National Sorry Day

Yesterday we acknowledged National Sorry Day which is observed annually on 26 May. The day

remembers the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed

from their families and communities.

National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on

how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great

significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also

commemorated by Australians right around the country.

National Reconciliation Week 2021 - 27 May - 3 June

Reconciliation Australia's theme for 2021 'More than a word, Reconciliation takes action.' This week

students and teachers will be talking about the meaning of Reconciliation Week and participating in

activities to further develop their understanding of the importance: Reconciliation is a journey for all

Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart

of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part

we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

Everyday Maths Hub

The Department of Education has launched a new 'Everyday Maths' Hub. It has been created for parents

and carers to help them support their child's mathematical skills and understanding with fun, practical and

creative activities.

Education Week

This year Education Week will run from Monday 26 July to Friday 30 July. The theme for 2021 is 'Lifelong

Learners' which recognises continuous learning as critical for success throughout life. We can all be lifelong

learners with so many different pathways to success.

More information regarding how Education Week will be celebrated at Lane Cove West PS will be

communicated in the next few weeks.

Kindergarten 2022

Please let you friends and neighbours know that enrolments are now open for Kindergarten next year. Visit

the school’s website to fill out the online enrolment form.

If you are a current LCWPS family which no longer lives in the school catchment and would like to enrol a

younger sibling for Kindergarten 2022, please wait until June 15 when an ‘out of area application form’ will

be available to complete.

Assemblies

As we start up assemblies again, we welcome our parents and carers to attend. With current COVID-19

restrictions, signing in is still an important part of contact tracing. From next week, we will have available at

the hall, sign in tables for parents which will alleviate the need to go to the office before an assembly.

Zone Cross Country 2021

Last Friday we had some very excited children who participated in the Zone Cross Country Carnival at

Blackman Park. Although it rained on and off throughout the day, everyone ran so well, and all the

children should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations go to Lachlan E who won his event and to

Hannah N who came 5th in her event. Both students will be attending Regionals. We wish them the very

best. Many thanks must go to all our lovely team manager, Sal Tremlett, who helped supervise our team.

She did a fantastic job making sure all our wonderful runners got to their race on time. I am told that our

school was one of the most well behaved schools on the day.

COIVD Guidelines

As a reminder, please keep students home from school if any family member is waiting on a COVID result. Once a negative result has been emailed through to the school email, students may return to school.

Below is the latest advice from NSW Health and the Department of Education relating to COVID-19 restrictions.

* Students over the age of 12 years are required to wear a face mask on public transport and school excursions involving public transport (hopefully only this week);

* Parents DO NOT need to wear a face mask when on school grounds. However, if you feel more comfortable wearing a face mask, please feel free to do so;

* Any parent entering school grounds must be free of flu-like symptoms;

* Singing will be avoided this week in classrooms and at assembly;

* Staff and students must continue to stay home if presenting with flu-like symptoms and be tested for COVID-19. The negative test result continues to be forwarded to the school email account;

* If students have recurrent symptoms for other medical reasons, a letter from your GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test result.

Sport Captain’s Update-Premier’s

Sporting Challenge and The Race

Around Australia

We are now four weeks into Race Around Australia and premier's

sporting challenge. Everyone is doing amazing! We have started off

this race with a bang. Some of us are already in Darwin! for Race

Around Australia. Also at lunch sport captains are handing out sport

equipment. These pieces of equipment belong to the school so take

good care of them. Lots of people are doing a great job taking care

of all of the equipment however some people still are not returning

them properly or losing them. Keep up the good work and return all

of the sport equipment.

For Race Around Australia, for stage three the leaders are :

• 6W with 2646 km

• 3M with 1065 km

• 2B with 1612 km

• KS with 1549.5 km

All of these classes are winning in their stages so a big congratulations to them.

Also don’t forget that the running club is still on and we are giving out equipment at lunch.

Calling the school

Please use the telephone in case of emergency only. The best way to communicate with a teacher or other

member of staff is via a note sent with your child or by sending an email to the school email. Your classroom

teacher is the initial point of contact if you have any questions or concerns, but as stated above any urgent

matters should be emailed directly to the school.

Keep in mind it is not always possible to get a phone message to your child’s class, particularly towards the

end of the day. Make sure they know each morning how they are getting home and what they should do if

they are feeling uncertain.

Reporting absences

The Skoolbag app is the preferred method for reporting

your child’s absence for the day.

If for some reason you decide to email the class teacher

directly, keep in mind that if your child’s teacher is away

from school that day, the message may not make it

through. If a teacher is off site due to training or sickness

they are not required to check their email.

For this reason all emails should be send to the school’s

address clearly stating your child’s name and class.

Borrowed Clothes

If your child has borrowed clothes from the school, please wash and return them as soon as possible. It is

also a good idea to have a spare pair of underpants and long pants or stockings packed in your child’s bag in

case they have an accident at school.

Merit Awards

When your child has received five merit awards, they can hand them in at the office to be issued with a Gold

award. Once your child has five Gold awards, they then hand them in to receive a Banner. All awards are

presented fortnightly. Please do not laminate the awards as they can not be stamped and will instead need

to have the corner cut. Please take good care of your awards as lost ones will not be reissued!

Ethics teachers wanted

Could you be a volunteer ethics teacher for Lane Cove West Public

School? Are you working from home more regularly and would like

to dedicate some of your time in the school community?

We are looking for three additional ethics teachers to join the team

from Term 3 and this is your chance to get involved.

Ethics teachers receive full training and support from Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation

approved to deliver the ethics program. Training consists of a two day face-to-face workshop and short

online modules. ALL lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers should have an interest in children's

education and the development of critical thinking skills.

Classes are held on Tuesday mornings each week (in two timeslots between 9:30 and 10:35am) and run for

30 minutes.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments

with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.

Children discuss topic such as:

• imagining how others feel

• how do we treat living things?

• what is laziness?

• how do we disagree in a respectful way?

• fairness

Primary Ethics seeks volunteers to deliver weekly ethics classes to children across NSW. While close to 40,000 children in government primary schools currently benefit from ethics education, with more volunteers it could be made available to many more.

Primary Ethics is the not-for-profit organisation that is authorised to develop and deliver special education in ethics to children in NSW.

We rely on parents, grandparents and community-minded people to become volunteer ethics teachers in their local primary school. It is a rewarding way to be involved in your local community, learn new things and help children develop skills for life.

Comprehensive training, access to lesson materials and classroom support are all provided. Previous teaching experience is not required.

Opportunities are also available for behind-the scenes roles including coordinators and regional managers.

Ethics in the infant years

Ethics classes in years K–2 focus on developing core skills such as listening to others, taking turns to speak and giving reasons.

Stories, poems and rhymes prompt children to discuss ethical issues such as hurting someone without meaning to, telling the truth, being kind, forgiving, ownership, fairness and empathy.

Our skills-based topics for this age group include asking and answering questions, disagreeing, changing your mind, working out what is true, giving and evaluating reasons as well as giving examples and counter examples. Logic is also introduced, with topics touching on inductive inference and deductive reasoning.

Ethics in the primary years

In years 3–6, ethics students develop their critical thinking and discussion-based skills.

Stories, contemporary issues and real life scenarios form the basis of discussions on ethical issues such as selfishness, how we should treat living things, promises, greed, friendship, cheating, voting, punishment, homelessness, teasing and fairness in society.

Skills-based topics for this age group include respectful disagreement, inferring or figuring things out, validity, generalising, proving claims, structuring arguments, identifying incorrect conclusions, identifying faulty reasoning, evaluating the strength of evidence and thinking about thinking. Primary aged students are encouraged to develop their community of inquiry skills by asking each other well thought out questions and challenging each other’s arguments.

Ethics classes run weekly during the school year within the Special Religious Education/Special Education in Ethics (SRE/SEE) timeslot.

Primary Ethics classes are free of charge

If you’d like your child to attend ethics classes, advise the school office via a note or email. Your child can start as soon as an ethics teacher is available and eight or more students have enrolled in a class.

Become a volunteer

Ethics classes are taught by specially trained volunteers who are often parents, grandparents or members of the broader community looking to give some of their time to a worthy cause. Becoming an ethics coordinator or ethics teacher can be a very rewarding way to be involved in your school community. Volunteer ethics teachers are always needed to ensure that there are adequate classes to meet demand. Experience is not required, as comprehensive training and access to lesson materials is provided.
