2005 Baseball Team Honored

The 2005 PIAA AAA Champion varsity baseball team was inducted into the Lampeter-Strasburg Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, September 16, 2016. The team brought home the second state baseball title in the District’s history when they defeated Peters Township 8 to 7 in Altoona on June 17, 2005. The Pioneers won their first PIAA baseball crown in 1994.

The induction banquet featured a video tribute to the winning season as well as remarks from Coach Todd Garber and team captains Chris Shehan and Jeff Bianchi. Each speaker said that winning the championship game was the highlight of his career and credited team characteristics, such as accountability, ability to overcome obstacles, and faith in one another, as reasons for their success.

The 2005 varsity baseball team had an overall season record of 26-4, winning the LL League Section III Championship and runner-up in District III. They were ranked 7th in the USA East Region and 30th in the country by USA Today. The team broke seven school records that season: most wins (26), most home runs (50), most runs scored (288), most hits (337), most RBIs (258), least errors (30), and best team batting average (.374A).

Three players – Jeff Bianchi, Chris Shehan, and Tyler Gansner – were selected for the 2005 All-State Team. That year, Bianchi went on to be drafted as the 50th pick overall and 2nd by the Kansas City Royals. He was 2nd team All-American and Pennsylvania Player of the Year, breaking eight single season and career records at L-S.

The search is on for the 2017 Lampeter-Strasburg Distinguished Alumni. Graduates from the class of 2002 or earlier are eligible to receive this year's award, which recognizes the former student's contribution to mankind through excellence in his or her profession or through community service.

The 2016 Distinguished Alumni recipient was David Petrick (Class of 1998), a NASA engineer. Mr. Petrick is the 15th person to receive the award, which is bestowed by a committee of former L-S teachers and administrators.

Distinguished Alumni candidates can be nominated by a friend, family member, or colleague. Nomination forms are available in the Community section of our website or by contacting community relations coordinator Anne Harnish at 717-464-3311, ext. 1010. The deadline for nominations is March 25, 2017. This year's Distinguished Alumni will be honored at the annual Board Recognition Banquet on Friday, May 12, 2017.
