LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS Attractions: Kadmat: Kadmat Island is one of the most popular to urist destinati ons. There is a huge lagoon one the west side of the island, around 10km from the Amini. Kavaratti Island: Kavaratti Island is the most developed Island in Lakshadweep. Kavaratti is the administrative capital of Lakshdweep and t he population is dominated by non-islanders. There are many Mosques o n this island (around 52) and the most beautiful one is Ujra mosque. Kalpeni: Kalpeni is l ocated at the distance of around 76k m south of Androth. This place lies in an extensive and shallow lagoo n. The lagoon is world famous for its rich coral and marine life. Bangaram: This Island is one of the best tourist destinations in the world due to its smooth sands and amazing palm grove backdrop. Here smooth sand is caressed by the waves of the multi coloured sea. This beaut if ul Island lies at a distance of around 8km from the no rth side of Agatti Island. Agatti Island: Agatti Island the gateway for the Lakshadweep, it is located at a distance of around 459 km from the Cochin. Agatti Island is around 6 km long. Surplus fishes are easily found on Agatti island. Fishing is the main occupation for the peop le living here. This island has some of the best beaches for swimming in the world. Here tourists can enjoy t he adventure of swimming, snorkelling and scuba d iving. Tourists can also find huge lagoons o ver here, which increases the beaut y of this island. KAVARATTI

Ujra Mosque

Muslim is the most populous religious community here. Ujra mosque is a beautiful mosque with

ornate ceilings and without minarets. The water from a well near the mosque is said to cureailments. There are around 50 mosques in Kavaratti. Ujra Mosque is believed to have been built

 by Sheikh Mohammed Kasim in the 17th century.

Things you can do

The beautiful and calm lagoon offers an ideal spot for water sports, swimming and snorkeling.Sunbathing or just lazing around on the beach can be a heady experience. If you love marine life,

then you can visit the Aquarium, which has an excellent collection of aquatic specimens.

See underwater life

The multi-colored underwater life in the lagoons can be viewed through glass-bottomed boats.Kayaks, wind surfers and sailing boats are available on hire.

Go Diving

The Dolphin Dive Centre is an attraction for those who love to scuba dive. 'Coral reef 'and'Taratashi' tourist packages (packages promoted by Lakshadweep Tourism) can be availed to

visit this coral paradise.

How to reach

Kavaratti

You can reach Kavaratti from either Agatti Island or Bangaram Island. There is a helicopter service from Agatti Island to all other islands in Lakshadweep. Indian Airlines operates flights

from Kochi to Agatti. Kingfisher Airlines also has flights from Kochi and Bangalore to Agatti.

Bangaram islands

Blue Magic at Night

The resort on these two small islands of Thinnakara and Parali also lie close to Bangaramenclosed by the same lagoon. During the night, phosphorescent plankton (a type of microscopic

underwater species that glow) gets washed ashore on the coral sands which give the beach a bluish glow.

Activities at Bangaram Island

Professional Scuba Diving is organized by the Lakshadweep Tourism department. Snorkeling is

also a popular activity here as you go on a underwater tour and see colorful creatures that live below the sea amidst the abundant coral reef.

Other activities include Kayaking, rafting, catamaran sailing, wind-surfing or just starting at thesea dance to the tunes of the wind as you laze in the white beaches here.

Minicoy Island 

The Lighthouse is a must-visit

Light House at Minicoy Island Minicoy has one of the largest lagoons with a small uninhabitedislet Viringili on its southern side. A large lighthouse, built by the British in the 1800s stands on

the island. If you go on top of the lighthouse you can get a panoramic view of the beach and thesurrounding islands.

Lava Dance, Race Boats and Tuna Fishing

Minicoy is renowned for its traditional dance - the Lava performed on festive occasions. The

inhabitants of Minicoy are skilled Seaman and you can find many fishing boats around here.

Tourist can enjoy colourful race boats called "Jahadhoni". It is said that a large number of men

from this island are employed as seamen in ships all over the world.

Mahl is the spoken language. Minicoy is an important center for tuna fishing. You can also visitthe Tuna canning factory on the Island.
