FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

14th March 2021

Laetare Sunday: Be joyful!

This Sunday has a joy-filled tone.

We enter into the second part of Lent with a spirit of eagerness.

Our celebration of the mercy and life given to us in Jesus is near.

All the readings are profound.

The letter to the Ephesians can be a meditation for the week.

We have been saved by our Lord, Jesus, the Christ.

That is consoling at this part of Lent. It is not the work we do that saves us.

It is God's love - in the midst of our darkness.

We can ask to be "lifted up" with Jesus in his surrender with the Father:

lifted up on the cross and therefore, lifted up in Glory.

And, we can express our desire to be an instrument of his healing love,

in the hearts of those to whom he sends us.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

CAFOD Family Fast Day. We have raised £497.90 for CAFOD. The collec-tion closes today. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Fr Philip Cross. Colette had the opportunity to see Fr Cross recently. Fr Cross has deteriorated in recent times. He is mostly in the wheelchair now and just walks around his bed in his room. So mobility-wise he is frailer. His mind is not as good as it used to be but he is not confused. Fr Cross is also sleeping a lot. Please remember him in your prayers. Thanks, Colette, for the update.

Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes 2021. We are hoping to organise a parish

pilgrimage to Lourdes from 11th to 15th October 2021. The basic cost per

person is £589. Copies of the itinerary can be requested via email. No deposit

will be due until after 17th May when international travel is set to resume.

Then we can confirm whether or not the pilgrimage will go ahead.

New Stewards. Thank-you to Peter and Maura, who attended the training session and have become the stewards at the Sunday 11:00am Mass.

Deep cleaning of the church for Easter. Saturday 27th March at 8:30am. All welcome! Please remember that we must be compliant with the present Covid-19 restrictions during the cleaning of the church.

Please bear in mind that if you request a Mass for a specific date by dropping an envelope through the presbytery let-terbox or putting it in the collection, and the Mass you request has been al-ready been booked, we can pray for the person at the Mass but it will not be offered for them. We keep to the rule of one intention per Mass. Fr Hector.

Ticketing system. If you have reserved seats for a Mass and then you can’t attend, please let the parish office know as soon as possible so that the seats be released. You may have noticed that our numbers for the Sunday Masses have increased.

Stations of the Cross during Lent. Friday at 7:30pm. There will be no moving from one station to another due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

From the Encyclical Letter Fratelli Tutti A UNIVERSAL LOVE THAT PROMOTES PERSONS 106. Social friendship and universal fraternity necessarily call for an acknowl-edgement of the worth of every human person, always and everywhere. If each individual is of such great worth, it must be stated clearly and firmly that “the mere fact that some people are born in places with fewer resources or less development does not justify the fact that they are living with less digni-ty”. This is a basic principle of social life that tends to be ignored in a variety of ways by those who sense that it does not fit into their worldview or serve their purposes. 107. Every human being has the right to live with dignity and to develop inte-grally; this fundamental right cannot be denied by any country. People have this right even if they are unproductive, or were born with or developed limita-tions. This does not detract from their great dignity as human persons, a dig-nity based not on circumstances but on the intrinsic worth of their being. Un-less this basic principle is upheld, there will be no future either for fraternity or for the survival of humanity. 108. Some societies accept this principle in part. They agree that opportuni-ties should be available to everyone, but then go on to say that everything depends on the individual. From this skewed perspective, it would be point-less “to favour an investment in efforts to help the slow, the weak or the less talented to find opportunities in life”. Investments in assistance to the vulner-able could prove unprofitable; they might make things less efficient. No. What we need in fact are states and civil institutions that are present and ac-tive, that look beyond the free and efficient working of certain economic, po-litical or ideological systems, and are primarily concerned with individuals and the common good. 109. Some people are born into economically stable families, receive a fine edu-cation, grow up well nourished, or naturally possess great talent. They will certainly not need a proactive state; they need only claim their freedom. Yet the same rule clearly does not apply to a disabled person, to someone born in dire poverty, to those lacking a good education and with little access to adequate health care. If a society is governed primarily by the criteria of mar-ket freedom and efficiency, there is no place for such persons, and fraternity will remain just another vague ideal.
