Lackland ISD’s Child Nutrition Department Receives Perfect Score from Texas Department of Agriculture Under the leadership of Mr. Alfredo Concha, Director of Student Support Services, the Lackland ISD Child Nutrition Department achieved a perfect score during the district’s recent Child Nutrition Administrative Review completed on December 17, 2015. The review was conducted over a 12 week period and included both an off-site and on-site portion. The review covered both critical performance standards and general review areas. In all, 154 areas were reviewed with zero deficiencies or errors being noted. TDA auditors also conducted an exhaustive review of the district’s free and reduced meal program, including an analysis of 216 free and reduced applications which resulted in zero administrative or financial errors being discovered. Other areas included a review of USDA dietary requirements and the financial administration of the Child Nutrition Program. The review concluded with a debriefing with Dr. Roper, Superintendent of Schools and Mr. Will McDowell, Executive Director of Operations and Technology. During the debriefing TDA lead reviewer, Melba Romo, praised our Child Nutrition staff by commenting that the staff is well-trained and highly knowledgeable. She also stated that achieving a flawless review is rare, and in all the years she has been conducting reviews, this is her first time awarding a perfect score. The perfect score can be attributed to the dedication of our Child Nutrition professionals and the support of our school administrators and district leadership. Congratulations to our Child Nutrition Team for a job well done. TRAFFIC PATTERN/FLOW CHANGE—We have had some significant changes to the traffic flow into the school parking lot. During the Holiday Break, Pucket Ave was changed from a two-way street to a one-way street, Eastbound only. Additionally, entry into the school parking lot from Selfridge Ave is no longer permitted. The former entry into the parking lot from Selfridge Ave is now out-bound only traffic from Pucket Ave. To access the school parking lot; traffic must

enter Pucket Ave at the intersection of Kenly Ave and Pucket Ave, adjacent to the Child Development Center.

Stacey Students Visit Lackland Commissary

by: Sydni Dukes, Freshman

Mrs.Duron’s "Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness" A1 class went on a mini field trip to Lackland’s Commissary on Wednesday, Jan. 6th. The purpose of the trip was to research food nutrition and to look for examples of deception in food marketing in a real life situation. The class of eager students walked up and down aisles, looking through food labels and comparing to see which brands were

actually the healthiest.

Students looked at the nutrition labels of various children snacks. They found that snacks that were low in sugar tended to be high in fats and sodium. Low fat snacks had a much higher sugar content than expected. The students also found in foods that seemed healthy according to their food labels

were not after taking the unrealistic serving sizes into consideration. Items that you would think to be one serving were in fact labeled as two servings. This allows companies to put a lower number of

calories (per serving) on the package.

This field trip gave young adults the chance to practice smart and healthy shopping. I believe if more Americans learned this skill our country’s nutrition would improve greatly.

The 2nd grade team collected donations for a local animal shelter in Lytle, Tx. Students brought in towels, dog and cat food, hand sanitizer, wet wipes and other materials that are needed at animal shelters for dogs and cats that have been rescued. The collection was taken up from November to December from 2nd grade students. We learned about the importance of volunteering and giving to

others less fortunate.

The Principle of Human services continued the tradition of making

wreaths for the Fisher house on base. With a coat hanger, newspaper, spray paint, and ribbon the students created some great Christmas

Decorations for families away from their home this holiday season. The Child Development class volunteered their time with the Salvation Army Angel Tree project. Stacey students helped distribute gifts to families in need. It was a great experience in which one of our students even

made the local news.

Ms. Dominguez visits Ms. Perez's Fifth grade class with Ms. Larkins to discuss cyber

bullying during our unit on Digital Citizenship.

First graders in Mrs. Allen’s class made a hypothesis on what would happen when heat was put onto

crayons. The students then conducted the experiment in

class. Neat!
