“Without light, there is no architecture.”

We were challenged to amplify the experience of our studio by manifesting our own particular interests in groups. Our group intervention introduced a third projector (perpendicular to the class project) which projected live feed footage that also needed tobereflectedbackontostudiowalls. This intervention placed the project in site and real time.

Light is a fundamental medium of architecture, that tastefully carves out spaces as well as memory. Memory and space only exist if they are discovered by light, which is then penetrated by it’s inhabitants.

The Air-Cylinder house is a formal exploration of the cylinder. While maintaining it’s simplicity on the facade, our group was compelled by the element of air to create a swift, yet curvaciously complex interior. We were chal-lenged to build a large model to understand the impor-

tance of construction explorations.

Theunhouseexploresanunlikelydefinitionofgravity. Here, two inhabitants live in the same house; though, they are compelled towards, yet against each other by the force

of gravity in between the house. The unhouse questions the idea of living with another inhabitant; with the ability to

inhabit each other’s presence solely by sight.

Page 24: Kyra Cuevas' Architecture Portfolio

Not only does this unhouse play with the psychology of the human mind, but it also tampers

with the understanding of the 9 square grid. Instead of using the 9 square grid as a structural basis for

load bearing units to create volumes and spaces, the unhouse utilizes the limitations of the 9 square grid

to create a new kind of inhabitation.

The nature of the curved pivot door is also found evident within the interior. The squeezing sensation upon entry, as well as a minimal line of sight allows for the inhabitant to “embrace theactionandproductofentry.”Afterfullyopeningthecurvedpivotdoor,(whichwouldfit

comfortably on the east wall) the inhabitant would then be exposed to an open vessel of space. Then, the body is able to explore freely, feeling the contrast against the constraint through the body as well as sight. The interior continues the concept of squeezed to free entry throughout

to ensure privacy for the inhabitant, as well as comfort upon residence.

IThe curved pivot door questions the body through it’s

strength and ability to move through space. It also is a play of

sight.

The interior houses the two primary body positions: vertical and horizontal, as well as the experimentation of the in between (sit-

ting or lounging.) The concept of extremely tight spaces gradually progressing towards open spaces helped modify these body posi-tions, as the volume of the interior not only speaks in plan but in

section as well.
