Kvarner WinesWhen in Kvarner, make a toast with Žlahtina, an indi-genous wine variety from this region. As this white wine is produced on the island Krk, it is a unique experience to taste it in Vrbnik- the home of Žlahti-na. Žlahtina is also produced in Pavlomir vineyards in Vinodol municipality. Only in Kvarner, can you try Valomet - the sea champagne. This champagne matures underwater, where the constant sea tem-perature provides for the best conditions for the ripening of this premium wine.

Secret recipe kept for centuriesIt was first served back in 1177, but its recipe has been a well kept secret for centuries. It is the Rab Cake, a sweet with a home almond heart. The historical documents that reveal how to make this symbol of the island of Rab- the emerald isle, still exist. Namely, in the 12th century Pope Alexander II visited Rab - Felix Arba. The white city decided to welcome the Pope with the highest honours and to host him in the best possible way, with the finest dishes and drinks. In his honour, the Benedictine nuns prepared this cake made up of almonds with a hint of liqueur and a thin veil of dough whose thickness reminded of the host from which it was originally made. The filigree work that lasts for two days and its distinctive snail form also speak of its uniqueness. The taste of this sweet delicacy probably reminded Pope Alexander of his childhood and the Mediterranean of his native Sicily.

Place of good energy Back in 1888, the first public wooden flooring beach was built in Crikvenica that marked the beginning of the development of tourism. The tradition of health tourism in Crikvenica-Vinodol has been developing since then. In Novi Vinodolski there is the largest wellness centre in this part of Europe. At about 30 kilometres connected series of beaches and natural, green hinterland, traditions that gave rise to the first Croatian Code – Law Codex of Vinodol dated from the 13th century are interrelated with the variety of modern tourist attractions and some of the most fa-mous Croatian beaches. Excellent geographic loca-tion and good transport links are just a few of the prerequisites of centennial tourism development. The Little Rose of Vinodol, Novi Vinodolski, Vinodol (August 17 - 24)During the time of the Frankopans, at the end of the grape harvest, the Little Rose used to be chosen among the female pickers in the vineyard– the most beau-tiful and the most diligent girl. Crowned with a wreath made from the grapevine, with the music of some old folk instru-ments, she would lead the parade of pickers to the town. Nowadays, the Little Rose of Vinodol Contest is a great celebra-tion of wine of the Vinodol region. Conte-stants compete in the games in Pavlomir Vineyards and in the Town of New Vinodo-lski. Rab Fair, Rab (July 25 – 27)The return to distant mediaeval past is possible by taking part in a memorable event Rab Fair. History, culture, tradi-tion, old skills and knowledge are intertwined in the staging of life of the famous Felix Arba in the 14th century and the festival which was then conceived. Rab Fair begins with a spectacular opening parade of Rab Crossbowmen, city gents and folk, and the second day of artisans spread out along the stone streets of the town to show the an-cient crafts and workshops. All culminates the last day with the Knights’ tournament in honour of St. Christopher’s Day. In this mediaeval contest of Rab Knights, Rab Crossbowmen measure their firm hand and a sharp eye by han-dling a genuine crossbow.
