Peru: Kuelap and the northern civilizations DAY 01 TRUJILLO . Upon arrival transfer to hotel Accommodation. DAY 02 TRUJILLO * Breakfastand and lunch. Morning city tour including colonial mansions and the Museum of the University. Then visit Moche and the pyramid of La Luna. Lunch at local restaurant in Huanchaco beach. Afternoon excursion to Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu Empire. Accommodation. DAY 03 TRUJILLO/CHICLAYO * Breakfast and lunch. Early departure to Chiclayo, visiting en route the archaeological site of El Brujo; to be seen extraordinary adobe-brick walls with colored bas-relief designs. Upon arrival in Chiclayo visit to the Tumbas Reales Museum (closed on Mondays) where all the pieces from the tomb of the Señor de Sipan are exposed. In the afternoon visit Tucume (closed on Mondays), vast complex of pyramids built between 1000/1300 a.D. Accommodation. DAY 04 CHICLAYO/CHACHAPOYAS * Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Head off to Chachapoyas on a long way through the Cordillera descending to the tropics, via Bagua. Late afternoon arrival. Accommodation. DAY 05 CHACHAPOYAS/CHILLO * Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Excursion to Kuelap, extraordinary fortress built by the Chachapoya culture as political and religious center. Climbing to the ruins takes about 30 minutes walking. Late afternoon arrival. Overnight in Chillo. DAY 06 CHACHAPOYAS/CHILLO * Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Day of adventure, visiting the Chachapoyas Mausoleums of Revash on horse back. Leave by car south and meet the horses and muleteers to start a one hour ascent to get closer enough to spot the incredible mausoleums, a row of Chachapoya burials built over narrow cliffhangings. After lunch head off to Leymebamba to visit its museum and admire the most remarkable collection of mummies found on the cliffs near the Lake of Condors. Accommodation at modest hotel. DAY 07 LEYMEBAMBA/CAJAMARCA * Breakfast and lunch. 12-hour journey by car to Cajamarca across the cordillera and the Marañon river. Lunch at Celendin. Late afternoon arrival Accommodation. DAY 08 CAJAMARCA * Breakfast and lunch. Morning visit Cumbemayo, group of geological formations and archeological remains including 3 large pre-inca complexes. The aqueduct carved into therock shows the knowledge of hydraulics the ancient Peruvians had. In the afternoon city tour and visit the necropolis of Otuzco consisting of a series of burial chambers or niches carved into the rock. Accommodation. DAY 09 CAJAMARCA * Breakfastand. Transfer to the airport. WHAT WE RECOMMEND TO BRING Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) orrain poncho. Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended. Camera, films and batteries (batteries consume more quickly under cold conditions) Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold. Sun block. After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body. Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported. Handkerchiefs. Non-disposable canteen (Nalgene type). Cash in soles and/or US$. Original passport. Optional: walking sticks or poles (rubber covers required).
