Young Composers Practice Their Craft at Keene State College

Composing new music is a wonderful thing, but sometimes the journey from creative spark to final performance can be difficult. The seven student composers who participated in the Keene State College Young Composers Institute this past June 20-22, found the compositional road a bit smoother. For three days they came together with Keene State faculty and guest artists as part of a program to support their work as composers.

Keene State’s Dr. Heather Gilligan and Dr. Paul Salerni from Lehigh University served as the primary composers for the institute. Gilligan is an active composer, pianist, and educator. She oversees theory and composition at Keene State College and serves as accompanist and Composer in Residence for the Chamber Singers of Keene. She has written works for New England area musicians, including the KSC Concert Band, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Lorelai Ensemble, The Newton Symphony Orchestra, The Rivers School’s “Seminar On Contemporary Music For the Young,” and The New Trio of Brookline. In 2007, she won the Malloy Miller Prize in Composition and the Boston University Department Honor Award. More recently she was recognized as the New Hampshire Music Teachers Association Commissioned Composer for 2010.

Salerni is the NEH Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Lehigh University. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Monocacy Chamber Orchestra, a professional ensemble in the Lehigh Valley. Salerni's numerous commissioned orchestral and chamber music works have been performed throughout the US, Canada, Europe and China. Recent commissions include Cape Cod Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, and the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. His chamber music and songs are also widely performed. His one-act opera Tony Caruso's Final Broadcast, with a libretto Dana Gioia, won the National Opera Association's Chamber Opera competition. It premiered in Los Angeles in January 2008 and has since been recorded on Naxos . His second one-act opera, The Life and Love of Joe Coogan, is adapted from a Dick Van Dyke TV Show episode. The original screenplay was written by Carl Reiner and adapted by librettist Kate Light. Joe Coogan had its premiere in September 2010.

The young composers had the opportunity for private sessions with each of these successful artists. Their work was then performed by Boston based Margot Rood, soprano, veteran Apple Hill Chamber violinist Moby Pearson, and Keene State College faculty Craig Sylvern, saxophone, and Jim Chesebrough, trombone. The new

KSC young composers and faculty from L to R Dr. Heather Gilligan, Dave Pastore, Shaun Cayabyab, Owen Davis, Dr. Paul Salerni, Miriam Sharrock, Rob Skrocki, Travis Corcoran, and Kyle Quirion.

works were first heard in a workshop setting, giving the composers the opportunity to hear and revise their efforts.

The Symposium faculty performed a final recital of

the participant’s finished projects and also presented concerts of music by Dr. Gilligan, Dr. Salerni, and other contemporary composers. Lecture presentations were also presented by musicologist, Joseph Darby, and percussionist and composer Christopher Swist, both faculty at KSC.

The success of the three-day experience is because of the format that allowed the composers to hear their own music played in workshop and then in a formal concert. Plans for the next Keene State College Young Composer Symposium are underway. For more information contact: Dr. Heather Gilligan at [email protected] or Dr. James Chesebrough at [email protected].

KSC student chapter of American Choral Directors Association

In the academic 09-10 year Keene State College graduates Melissa White and Melinda Abodeely established the student chapter of American Choral Directors Association, in connection to NHACDA. Since then our academic group has grown in size to what now is fourteen members, with an executive board of five. After being recognized as a club by KSC, we still had to take steps to prove ourselves before being provided with a budget. It was up to the executive board of the current 10-11 academic year to proceed, and build on the foundations to continue the group.

The 2010-2011 executive board consisted of numerous music majors and grade levels. Pictured: (front) Ariel Cohen, Jenna Foley, Hannah Hall, Ellie Hahn; (back) Kerri McCormack, Brandon Carta, Tim Price, Amy St. Louis, Bailey Emerson

Pam Stevens and Diane performed Resphigi's Laud to the Nativity on December 11 and 12 with the Monadnock Chorus. She also conducted Vivaldi's Gloria with the Greater Gardner Community Chorus this November 19, and prepared The Nashua Symphony Chorus for a performance of Mahler's 8th Symphony, which is rarely performed, on November. 21.

Christopher Swist

Chris had some of his recent publications reviewed in Per-cussive Notes, the magazine of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS). The July and September issues

had positive reviews for several works published through Key-board Percussion Publications. In the September issue PAS said that Percussion Quartet No. 1 “takes great advantage of different per-cussion timbres... The melodies are intriguing and exotic, and the percussion part is unusually melodic.” Also, the Etudes 1-3 for marimba were deemed “won-derfully written and could be performed individually or as a set. Swist’s artistry as a composer is displayed through his lyrical and idiomatic writing for the marimba.” Percussion Quartet No 1 and Etudes 1-3 have been performed at KSC on various faculty recitals going back to 2003.

KSC’s new vocal chamber ensemble, Canticum Novum, receives funding for the Bach BWV 61 project

The Fall 2010 semester marked the beginning of Canticum Novum, an 11-member, vocal chamber ensemble comprised of KSC’s finest

singers. Director Dr. Sandra Howard was awarded funding from the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research for the Bach BWV 61 project. Bach’s cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland is a multi-movement choral work scored for colla parte strings, organ, and bassoon and features three vocal soloists. In conjunction with support from the Department of Music, these funds provided the necessary resources to hire professional players and purchase instrumental scores. In addition, Canticum Novum performed works by von Bingen, Asolo, and collaborated with the KSC Orchestra for Holst’s Christmas Day and Britten’s antiphonal work Hymn to the Virgin with community-based ensemble The Chamber Singers of Keene.

Brass Day 2010The fourth annual Keene State College Brass Day was hosted on Saturday November 6, 2010 in the Redfern Arts Center on the KSC campus. Over thirty students from Keene State College and public schools from across New Hampshire participated in this free workshop for brass players and musicians of all ability levels. The day featured guest clinicians The New England Brass and was hosted by KSC trumpet professor Jim Boccia and low brass professor Jim Chesebrough.

The New England Brass has been performing to enthusiastic audiences since 1980. The musical talent of the members is an extension of the artistically rich Boston area environment. These musicians make their living as top, 1st call players occupying principal positions in many of the orchestras and ensembles in and around town including the Boston Pops, Boston Ballet, New Hampshire Symphony, Portland Symphony, Albany Symphony, etc. The members are also active in the commercial work available including big bands, jazz ensembles, rock/blues bands and theatre.

The New England Brass has established a solid position among the finest performing brass chamber groups in the country.

The day began with a wonderful performance by the New England Brass. The performance and the following discussion created marked enthusiasm for brass ensemble and quintet playing in particular. The guest artists then led break out sessions and master classes for trombone, tuba, horn, and trumpet. A dozen solo performers, including Ariel and Sarah Sherman from Merrimack High School and Sam Friedman Cowan and Steven Kroh from Manchester Central High School were coached by the New England Brass. Each clinician challenged the players and in positive way led each of them to a higher level of performance. The coaching session with the KSC Brass Quintet was quite exciting. They worked on John Cheetham’s Scherzo, a standard in the brass quintet repertoire.

After lunch the KSC Brass Ensemble performed Michael Green’s arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner, Trumpeter’s Lullaby by Leroy Anderson, and Sousa’s Semper Fidelis in preparation for their up coming performances for Veteran’s Day observances in the city of Keene and with the Chamber Singers of Keene on Sunday Nov. 14th. Another highlight of the day was the massed brass choir reading session. This year the group read a number of arrangements by Dave Sporny, long time trombone professor at UMass Amherst.
