lost their homes to the forest fire. Our annual retreat is the evening of Friday Oct. 16, Saturday Oct. 18 and the morning of Sunday October 19, at Lemon Creek Lodge., 7680 Kennedy Road, Slocan, V0G 2C0 Phone 250-355-2403. For more information contact

QUILT SHOW 2015—THE ART OF QUILTING Planning for the 2015 Quilt Show, THE ART OF QUILTING, is well underway. We are thrilled to an-

nounce that Janet Jones and Dorothea Housworth will be our feature quilters.

REGISTRATION FORMS are now available and members are strongly urged to submit their entries

with a picture attached before the deadline of September 17, 2015.

If you submit an entry and then withdraw, it is essential that you inform Dianne Watts as pre-planning is done for the quilt displays. Please include a small photo of your quilt on each entry form this year. It will make the pre-planning of quilt hanging at the show so much easier. If you have submitted a Registration Form and discover that you won’t be able to show the quilt, it is imperative that you report this to Diane Watts by September 17. Elsie Gates and Bonnie Chalmers will again be overseeing the “Hanging of the

Quilts”.

Sandi St. Denis and night guild members will be co-ordinating the QUILTERS’ BOUTIQUE again this year, and will have a larger space at the show. Keep this in mind if you wish to sell any of your wonderful creations. Samdi has Registration Forms which will be distributed at the September Chat and Sew and must

be completed and submitted to her by September 17.

The PAINT CHIPS CHALLENGE is well underway. The challenge piece must include any tone of your paint chip plus two other colours. The maximum perimeter of the finished piece is no larger than 120 inches

around the edges.

SHOW POSTERS & ADVERTISING—Sheila Hart has a stock of the lovely posters made by Elsie Gates. She welcomes assistance with posting these throughout town. Posters have already been hung in New Denver, Kaslo, Fernie. She has placed an order for several colorful ads and circle ads in The Nelson Star and The Advertiser. The show is also advertised through electronic media and on the Guild’s Facebook

page.

STAFFING—Leah Gray is pleased to report that all of the positions for specific roles at the show are now

filled.

2015 GUILD RAFFLE QUILT REPORT Tickets for the 2015 Guild Raffle Quilt are selling well and we have received many positive comments about the “Garden Labryinth” quilt. If you are attending a meeting or gathering where you have the opportunity to show the quilt and sell tickets, please arrange with Sheila to borrow the quilt. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to donate to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. As Sheila says, “We are all winners in this raffle as our donation will help purchase a piece of equipment for our hospital.”

Quilt Canada Lethbridge Report by Bonnie Chalmers

Quilt Canada was held in Lethbridge, Alberta this past June. It was easily one of the best, well run shows that I have attended. Because it was so close, I was able to drive which was a real bonus for getting around the city. It was held on the beautiful campus of the Lethbridge University overlooking the gorge that separates West Lethbridge from the city, offering us stunning views both day and night. Accommodations were available in student housing and four of us took advantage of a quad share, very modern and lovely with just a five minute stroll to the show. After an exhaust-ing day of quilt classes, viewing shows and shopping, it was so nice to come home to friends with like interests to share our thoughts and ideas.

The judged show had some awesome quilts that represented quilters from across our great country. There was representation from almost all the forms of quilting so I'm sure that it would have been very difficult for the judges! One of the shows was the Trendtex challenge and the theme was Blowing in the Wind, very appropriate for Lethbridge. Our own, Elsie Gates had the lovely piece, shown on the right, in this show. These were auctioned off so she is not able to show us but it was thrilling to see it hanging amongst all the crea-tions nonetheless.

Of course, one of the biggest draws was the merchant mall. Vendors from across Canada were there, some fifty or more! Not hard to drop a little cash and you didn't need to worry about the exchange rate either! Some of our members that attended took this opportunity to re supply their quilt rooms with little trinkets like sewing machines and even a long arm! I stuck to the bits that fit in my suitcase but don't think I wasn't a shade of green with envy over these ladies purchases. The next two annual shows will be held in Toronto so if you have ever wanted to see the sights of Toronto and the Great Lakes, this could be your opportunity! Watch for the advertisements in the Canadian Quilter or ask at Guild. Some of us may be needing a roommate and go!

Quilt Canada 2016

Mark your calendars! Quilt Canada 2016 will be held June 15-18, 2016 at the International Cen-

tre, Toronto, Ontario. We are pleased to be able to offer eighteen teachers and 50 workshops and lec-

tures for you to choose from. For more information or to volunteer for this exciting event contact Linda

Schmidt at: [email protected]

Art Group continued to meet throughout the summer with a Rust Dying workshop in June, Flower Poun-ing in July and Sun Printing in August. Some members are very good at completing their monthly word chal-

lenges which will be displayed at the Quilt Show. The June 11 meeting word was ‘Ring of Fire’.

Sunblocking is done by painting fabric with Seta Colour, laying an article on the fabric, exposing it to sun for a few minutes, allowing the article to dry. Shown below is Gloria Reibin’s creative use of a rubber doormat and

Dorothea Houseworth’s use of laser cut balsa wood carvings.

We welcome and encourage you to come to our play sessions and/or take part in the monthly challenge word. The September 10th meeting will deal with Thread Play, which is bobbin work using thicker deco-rative thread in the bobbin and couching which involves zig zagging over the top of fabric. Contact Joanne

Niven if you are interested in attending and she will provide the supply list.

The Art Group is looking for a new name. Joanne Niven is accepting suggestions by e-mail, after which the

group will vote on a new name. Please contact Joanne at e-mail: [email protected] with your suggestions.
