Parashat VayeshevThe unstable relationship of Yosef and his brothers

Rambunctious BeingsAnd missing valuablesYosef was Ya'acov's youngest, most beloved son, and therefore

was detested by his brothers. Yosef actions invoke jealousy and hatred by his brothers: Due to Yosef's meticulous observance of the halachot, he would often report his brothers' 'non kosher' behaviors to his father. Ya'acov also invokes jealousy towards Yosef with his special attention, such as in the case of the unique coat of many colors Ya'acov had sewn for Yosef. The tension in their home increased following two highly significant dreams dreamt by Yosef, which are subsequently told to his father and brothers. In the first dream, all of the brothers appear as sheaves of wheat in a field. In the dream, Yosef's sheaf stands over all the other sheaves, which are bowing down to him. Needless to say, the brothers became furious when they heard this and said to him: "Will you reign over us or govern us?!" This of course increased their hatred even more. Yosef's second dream invokes the wrath of his father, Ya'acov. In this dream, the sun, moon and eleven stars all bow to Yosef. In other words, even his parents- the 'sun and the moon'- are supposedly meant to bow down to young Yosef. But unlike the jealous ridden brothers, Ya'acov understand, despite his anger, that Yosef's dreams are not empty arrogant statements, and he withholds in his heart the stories of the dreams, as he waits for them to unfold. The following excerpt from the parashah will help us understand the relationship between Yosef and his brothers: "Ya'acov dwelt in the land of his father's sojourning, in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Ya'acov: when Yosef was seventeen years old, being a shepherd, he was with his brothers with the flocks, and he was a lad, [and was] with the sons of Bilha and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Yosef brought evil tales about them to their father. And Israel loved Yosef more than all his sons, because he was a son of his old age; and he made him a fine woolen coat. And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, so they hated him, and they could not speak with him peacefully."Rashi and Chazal attempted to expose, through clues found in the text, the personal relationship between the

brothers, which may help to explain their behavior towards Yosef. For the first time in the Torah, Bilha and Zilpah are described as Ya'acov's wives. Until this point, they were always mentioned as slaves. It can be assumed that Yosef claimed that the children of the slaves should be treated as the children of 'gvirot'- their fathers' wives- and this can be understood from the following verse: "and he was a lad (na'ar), [and was] with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives". The word 'na'ar' (lad) derived from the root of the word 'niur' (awakening). Yosef awakened them to demand for equal rights of the brothers. Of course the brothers, sons (all but Benjamin, who was still young) of the 'gvira' Leah did not agree with Yosef, because this damaged their unique rights. Yosef presented this claim of discrimination to his father, and asked Ya'acov to decide if the four sons of Bilha (Dan, Naftali) and Zilpa (Gad and Asher) were considered children of slaves or the children of his wives. Ya'acov agreed with Yosef, as can be seen in the following verse: "And Israel loved Yosef more than all his sons= "He agreed with what he said" "because he was the son of his old age and he made him a fine woolen coat", he saluted him and possibly even appointed him to continue supervising proper equal rights. The brothers hated Yosef, and most likely figured that selling him was some type of punishment. 'Because he who connects with slaves, and with the sons of slaves, is worthy of being one'. Later on, the brothers regretted their decision to sell Yosef. They knew that Yosef was right when he spoke, and therefore this is mentioned once again in parashat 'Miketz' and is alluded to in parashat 'Vayigash': "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man" (42:13). Parashat Vayeshev is usually read before Chanukah, and alludes to the victory of freedom and equality over the forces of darkness and oppression. Chanukah, too, symbolizes the victory of spirit over matter, the victory of the Israelites culture over Greek materialism. Therefore we celebrate Chanukah with oil and light, which symbolize the spirit and the Torah.

My 1 and a half year old son just broke my glasses Shab-bat morning. This was the first glimpse of my morning while still somewhat asleep; something alert-ed me to open my eyes only to see him snap an arm off the frame. So now I am walking around with glasses that too easily slip down my nose and with my high prescription I cannot afford to not wear them. Which makes me wonder, what is with the destructiveness of little boys? Why do they have to bang, shatter, and shake every item they set their eyes upon? My precocious and timid 4 old year old daughter would never have dared do such a thing. Even now, with her recent realization that she can defy her parents and do something to the contrary, her actions do not com-pare to this. She does not destroy. Its just not in her feminine nature.I dont feel badly anymore stereo-typing genders. Before I had a boy, I tried to make as if I believed in gender equality, that just because one may have been born a woman or man does not limit them and one should not judge an action based on anothers sex. But now I feel dif-ferently. Yes, I only have one boy and one girl, but I feel that now I have every right to stereotype. I truly feel that nurture aside, a boy and a girl have such drastically dif-ferent natures, that its the excep-tion when a boy or girl displays other gender attitudes or behaviours. I am not sexist, just basing my views on my cur-rent ex-perience. I had a d a u g h t e r who to this day is still timid, gentle, sweet and afraid to get out of her bed without asking us permission. She was like that from the day she was born. She certain-ly did not get that from her parents; me, who grew up with a male based family and my husband who was a pretty active kid. Then along came my son, who was pretty much born with his head raised high, looking

around the room for some action.I figured my daughters mildness came from us, that we were such calm and perfect parents for her to be so obedient and gentle. I thought when I had a boy he would also be gentle and mild, not to mention in-fluenced by his older sweet sister. Well, now my expectations have been shot, rather rapidly because as the months progressed I realized my son was no gentle giant but a rough and tough, break and smash little boy, who would let nothing get in his way for something his glance set upon. Having grown up myself with 6 brothers, who were pretty rowdy I know this behaviour all too well. My brothers took ev-ery opportunity to light a match to anything, rip my barbie doll heads off, put party snappers in my bed and create some sort of shock thing with a lighter so every time I walked into my room I would get zapped. You would think Id be used to this sort of thing and roll with it. But Im not, because like I said, I planned for my son to be different. Talking to other moms, I realize that this is an all too common phenomena. I guess it is almost a sort of ritual to break a certain amount of things as a little boy and throw away a c e r t a i n a m o u n t of your mothers

    valuables and pull

some hairs and scratch and bite and yell. May-be in some way, it makes them more of a boy and ul-

    timately, a man. Being a

woman myself, I am not privy to what goes on in

the male psyche and I try to glean as much as possible from my hus-band who just shrugs it off and says, hes a boy. I am slowly coming to terms with what that means and still searching for my favourite garlic crusher and gold necklace with stones that I have had forever.

Ilan Shtayer clearly recalls the day he came to the realization that even the most indifferent Katamonim residents would immediately volunteer to join community missions, whenever necessary. These have certainly been keeping them busy lately. "On chol ha'moed Sukkot of last year, students from 'Bezalel' arrived at Park HaMesila as part of the 'Art and Activism' course. Their idea: To build a seven story maze from mud and natural materials. When the local kids, who were on vacation at the time, noticed the local activity under their house, they also came out to help. At that moment, I knew that the dream of community involvement may actually come true", he says with a smile. Mr. Shtayer is currently fighting to revive the idea of the maze, after "Shefa" (municipal department for city beautification) nearly destroyed it, claiming that the activity was illegal. "The plan was to build a maze at the height of an average kid, where the kids would be able to play. This matter will go one way or the

other in the next few weeks, assuming that the damage done is reversible."Ilan Shtayer (42) reached the neighborhood two decades ago, and became active in the community almost four years ago. The first activity was meeting with residents who care about the negligence in the area, which now has no bank, post office or even supermarket. "A few of us, people with similar interests, decided that this topic must be on the top on our priority list". Two and a half years ago, upon quitting his job, Ilan got fully sucked into the whole thing. Since then, he's been active on site, recruiting people by email, and initiating meetings for discussions on topics he is passionate about. Even when excited by his successes, Shtayer tries not to show it. The only clues, giving it away, are a slight tremble in his voice. Ilan lives in a serene, vegetarian home, emitting whiffs of organic produce and healthy cooking. Alfalfa sprouts and lentil soup are a staple in this household. Shtyaer believes that his community action begins in the home. He, his wife Lilach and

children Amit and Ya'ara are completely devoted to the good of the community, possibly also under the influence of the bilingual school they attend. "We looked for a small school, close to home, with high values. An entire article should be written about this school - we are very satisfied", explains Lilach. "The neighborhood has turned into an educational industrial zone over the past few years, and everyone should look into the ways the residents will be able to benefit from this."

"I believe that urban renewal should first and foremost focus on community action. It always seems more attractive to discuss money issues, but everything begins with the activities at Gan Hakipod, and at Park Hamessila, and involves many locals. Eventually when we explain why this activity is so important, their door will always be open to change". Even Ilan Shtayer knows that in order to make the neighborhood attractive, the quality of living in the area needs to rise. Egged must find a solution for the 18 bus line, which "hops through" the neighborhood. Perhaps the change will come with the advent of the light rail, which will reduce the number of cars on the roads. The municipality must relocate the ugly pipes that make the neighborhood so unattractive, to an underground location, and the 'Ministry for the Protection of Nature' must find an alternate solution to the neighborhood

"frog". "I believe we are on the right path to achieve some of our goals. Today, we are no longer afraid to announce loud and clear, that our hope is that the Katamonim neitghborhood will turn into a model for other neighborhoods in the city", declares Shtayer. "I think we've created a very worthy infrastructure of community activity".
