Issue 49 KOINONIA Your monthly source of informaon and inspiraon MARCH 2017 KOINONIA “A Journey of Stones” Dear Church Family, Come join us as we begin a solemn journey….”A Journey of Stones.” The season of Lent begins Ash Wednesday and connues unl Easter Sunday, a total of 40 days, excluding Sundays (as every Sunday is considered a “lile Easter”). Lent is a me of intenonal introspecon, engaging the disciplines of self-examinaon and repentance. But these disciplines—significant as they are—are not ends in and of themselves. They are a means by which we would return to God with all our hearts. Unfortunately, the pracce of engaging Lent had oſten been reduced to the singular queson: “What are you giving up for Lent?” But the real queson of Lent is this: “How will I repent and return to God with all my heart?” This begs an even deeper queson: “Where in my life have I goen away from God and what are the disciplines that will enable me to find my way back home?” How subtle are the ways we “leave” God in favor of other pursuits—even those that seem noble and necessary. The cares and concerns of life, even the dreams and visions that God has given us, can become distracons from the relaonship itself. We wake up one day and realize that we have compromised what is most important. Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasng and weeping and mourning. (Joel 2:12) Lenten disciplines help us to abstain from the daily distracons that prevent us from seeing and naming reality correctly. As we allow some of the external trappings of our lives to be stripped away, we can return to a truer sense of ourselves and a deeper pursuit of God. On Ash Wednesday we receive ashes on our foreheads as a way of acknowledging our human condion. No maer who we think we are, the tradion of Ash Wednesday reminds us that “you are dust and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) This is not meant to be morbid, but rather to limit the inflated image of self—to remind us that life is fleeng and how we spend it eternally significant. The ashes marking our foreheads carry the same meaning contained in the Old Testament pracce of covering oneself with ashes. Ashes are an outward sign of an inward repentance and sorrow. “I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and supplicaons with fasng and sackcloth and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). When Israel had deserted God, Jeremiah summoned the naon to “gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes” (Jeremiah 6:26). Ashes are the result of fire, evidence of what was, but is now lost—a symbol for our brokenness, with no hope except God. Facing our sin in the shadow of the cross is the healthiest way to deal with the reality of our sin. And as sobering as the Lenten season is, it is also strangely hopeful. There is a path for returning to God no maer how distracted I have been. And when we accept the challenge to make this solemn journey, the promise of Isaiah 61:3 becomes real for us on Easter morning….because God’s specialty is bringing “beauty from ashes!” Our sermons throughout Lent will deal with the “stones” of life—our hearts of stone, the stones of our sin, the stones that cry out, the stone that sealed the tomb and the one that was ulmately rolled away….by Jesus! Come join the journey— “A Journey of Stones” that will lead us to new life in Christ! Joyfully HIS and Yours, Pastor Gayle

KOINONIA “A Journey of Stones”

Dear Church Family, Come join us as we begin a solemn journey….”A Journey of Stones.” The season of Lent begins Ash Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday, a total of 40 days, excluding Sundays (as every Sunday is considered a “little Easter”). Lent is a time of intentional introspection, engaging the disciplines of self-examination and repentance. But these disciplines—significant as they are—are not ends in and of themselves. They are a means by which we would return to God with all our hearts. Unfortunately, the practice of engaging Lent had often been reduced to the singular question: “What are you giving up for Lent?” But the real question of Lent is this: “How will I repent and return to God with all my heart?” This begs an even deeper question: “Where in my life have I gotten away from God and what are the disciplines that will enable me to find my way back home?” How subtle are the ways we “leave” God in favor of other pursuits—even those that seem noble and necessary. The cares and concerns of life, even the dreams and visions that God has given us, can become distractions from the relationship itself. We wake up one day and realize that we have compromised what is most important. Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. (Joel 2:12) Lenten disciplines help us to abstain from the daily distractions that prevent us from seeing and naming reality correctly. As we allow some of the external trappings of our lives to be stripped away, we can return to a truer sense of ourselves and a deeper pursuit of God. On Ash Wednesday we receive ashes on our foreheads as a way of acknowledging our human condition. No matter who we think we are, the tradition of Ash Wednesday reminds us that “you are dust and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) This is not meant to be morbid, but rather to limit the inflated image of self—to remind us that life is fleeting and how we spend it eternally significant. The ashes marking our foreheads carry the same meaning contained in the Old Testament practice of covering oneself with ashes. Ashes are an outward sign of an inward repentance and sorrow. “I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). When Israel had deserted God, Jeremiah summoned the nation to “gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes” (Jeremiah 6:26). There is a path for returning to God no matter how distracted I have been. And when we accept the challenge to make this solemn journey, the promise of Isaiah 61:3 becomes real for us on Easter morning….because God’s specialty is bringing “beauty from ashes!” Our sermons throughout Lent will deal with the “stones” of life—our hearts of stone, the stones of our sin, the stones that cry out, the stone that sealed the tomb and the one that was ultimately rolled away….by Jesus! cookie is permitted as long as it doesn’t have powdered sugar on the outside of the cookie. It is preferable that the cookies be made no bigger than 2” in diameter so that they won’t break. Please bring the cookies to the Sanctuary kitchen no later than Tuesday, March 21. A prayer signup sheet will be available in the Gathering Space and Experience

Worship beginning Sunday, March 5. Pastor Jason Bryant and Fred Wetherell will be serving on the team. In the past, church members Kent Jones and Kent Van Slambrook have served on many Kairos teams. If you have any questions, please call Fred Wetherell at 704-968-1413.
